The role of imitation for business model design and firm performance: a new venture perspective

Abstract
The study examines the role of imitation on innovative business model design. Thereby we differentiate between imitation breadth - imitating from the industry leader - and imitation scope - imitating from business model innovators outside the dominant industry logic. An analysis of 173 new ventures suggests that imitation breadth and imitation scope have an inverted u-shaped relationship on innovative business model design.
