A Small Step, a Big Jump: GoTriple and Linked Open Data

Abstract

Data today are everywhere. Despite this large amount of data, the use of good data publication practices, such as Linked Open Data, is only just beginning. This research has the goal of connecting GoTriple to the Web of Data through the use of Linked Data. Two macro steps are required: defining an ontology, based on GoTriple's existing data model and extending its APIs to expose serialized data in JSON-LD, a W3C recommended format. Achieving this goal would bring several benefits to GoTriple: matching the best practices of the leading European platforms for digital cultural heritage management; achieving the highest level in the scale of Tim Berners-Lee's 5-star scheme on Linked Open Data; reducing duplication of information by connecting with external resources; facilitating users and researchers in content discovery; connecting with authoritative metadata sources (e.g. Confederation of Open Access Repositories, Library of Congress); reuse of GoTriple's data in other external projects, resulting in an expansion of users; increased quality of content, resulting in improved user experience; more efficient use of resources, due to the ability of users to add or reuse GoTriple's metadata; and achievement of most FAIR principles, including interoperability, reusability, and findability. This research sets itself the fundamental task of adapting GoTriple to the standards, trusted and supported by the Linked Open Data community at the European level. It is not only a theoretical work: as part of the development team of Net7, I'll present the actual implementation of these ideas that I was able to apply on the GoTriple platform.
