Salmonid farming has grown considerably in the last fifty years, with Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) being the main farmed species, and with an increasing production of large size fish that has required the development of all‐female or sterile populations. Salmonids are gonochoristic fishes with a genotypic sex determination (GSD) system, classically described as male heterogametic (XX/XY). Some temperature effects (GSD + TE) have been reported in a limited number of cases. The master sex determining gene, sdY (sexually dimorphic on the Y chromosome), has been characterized in rainbow trout, and is conserved in many salmonid species. sdY is expressed very early (around hatching in rainbow trout) during gonadal differentiation, long before the initiation of histological sex differentiation. In addition, other genes exhibit a sex‐dimorphic expression, particularly those involved in steroid synthesis, leading to a hypothesis in favor of a key role of estrogens in inducing and maintaining ovarian differentiation in salmonids. Sex control in salmonids is mostly carried out by producing XX neomales that give rise to all‐female populations after crossing with wild‐type females. These XX neomales are usually produced by masculinization of females, using an androgen treatment (the most commonly used being 17α‐methyltestosterone) administered in the food from the first feeding of larvae. Limits and concerns of such methods are discussed, and other potential approaches are foreseen.

This scientific knowledge can then be used to inform the general public and policymakers. Scientific understanding starts with having available the right data, often in the form of observations. Research Infrastructures (RIs) exist to perform these observations in the required quality and to make the data available to first of all the researchers. In the current Big Data era, the increasing challenge is to provide the data in an interoperable and machine-readable and understandable form. The European RIs on environment formed a project cluster called ENVRI that tackles these issues. In this chapter, we introduce the societal relevance of the environmental data produced by the RIs and discuss the issues at hand in providing the relevant data according to the so-called FAIR principles.

Most fossil evidence on-land is Early Pleistocene in age, and occurs in peninsular Italy, Sicily and on some Greek islands, whilst submerged situations are by large late Pleistocene. According to circumstances, the mode of preservation of fossil cold-water coral varies sensibly (from loose corals to micritic limestones) what affects the level of confidence of the paleoecological reconstruction. All known situations point about a bathyal setting for such cold-water coral hosting deposits in the Mediterranean basin, but under many respects the geological record of cold-water coral paleoenvironments is yet largely underworked. Research developments are discussed, with special emphasis on the widespread submarine occurrences which prevail over the on-land cold-water coral legacy.

For performance test (in laboratory as well as in-situ), the measurement of the upstream flow velocity is required to calculate kinetic energy, especially when the turbulence intensity is high. These flow fluctuations affect significantly the performance and fatigue behaviour of tidal turbines. However, for a good accuracy the upstream flow measurement needs to be performed in a synchronous way with the turbine parameters. In this paper, we study the time and space correlation between velocity measurements and turbine parameters in order to evaluate and improve the specifications given in IEC TS 62600–200 to 202 for the current profiler placement relative to the turbine.

A statistical description of reanalysed pressure fields identifies these recurring patterns with clusters in state-space, also called “regimes”. Recently, these weather regimes have been described through instantaneous, local indicators of dimension and persistence, borrowed from dynamical systems theory and extreme value theory. Using similar indicators and going further, we focus here on weather regime transitions. We use 60 years of winter-time sea-level pressure reanalysis data centered on the North-Atlantic ocean and western Europe. These experiments reveal regime-dependent behaviours of dimension and persistence near transitions, although in average one observes an increase of dimension and a decrease of persistence near transitions. The effect of transition on persistence is stronger and lasts longer than on dimension. These findings confirm the relevance of such dynamical indicators for the study of large-scale weather regimes, and reveal their potential to be used for both the understanding and detection of weather regime transitions.

The MyCOAST project (http://mycoast-project.org/) is an INTERREG Atlantic Area project designed to demonstrate that marine services for tackling coastal risks can be jointly developed. The main innovation and originality of the project stems from the implementation of transferable tools able to improve the risk management systems operated in the Atlantic Area. A successful outcome was achieved by identifying mature existing tools and selecting those that could be further developed by partners during the project duration. Demonstration of the tools in pilot actions showed that they are effective in supporting end users and relocatable among different regions in the Atlantic Area.
