TIGF is one of the French operator which manages 5000 km of pipelines in the south-west quarter of France. This paper presents a decision-making tool which automatically ranks the pipeline sections regarding the risk of deterioration (damages and corrosion) and the gravity of the consequences, indicating which pipeline sections should be excavated. The tool relies on a fuzzy expert system which gathers 26 input variables, processes more than 300 rules, classifies the risk of deterioration into 7 classes and estimates the gravity. The rules are a formalization of human expertise: the fuzzy logic helps to tackle the vagueness of their knowledge and the measurement inaccuracy of some of the 26 input variables. The method has been tested on past excavations to assess its performances.

In order to detect atypical behavior, this paper explores the use of data generative models to learn real approach flight path probability distributions and identify flights that do not follow these distributions. Through the use of Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN), a GAN is first trained to learn real flight paths, generating new flights from learned distributions. Experiments show that the new generated flights follow realistic patterns. Unlike trajectories generated by physical models, the proposed technique, only based on past flight data, is able to account for external factors such as Air Traffic Control (ATC) orders, pilot behavior or meteorological phenomena. Next, the trained GAN is used to identify abnormal trajectories and compare the results with a clustering technique combined with a functional principal component analysis. The results show that reported non compliant trajectories are relevant.

Inland navigation networks are composed of several artificial canals, usually characterized by no slope. These canals are large-scale systems that can be accurately described by means of the nonlinear Saint-Venant partial differential equations. However, the lack of an analytical solution for these equations is one of the reasons why simplified models have been developed. In this work, the Integrator-Delay-Zero model is used as the input-output model to link the water depths to the discharges. A modeling extension for a canal with inflows and outflows along the water stream is proposed: an overlapping problem is discussed and a criterion choice is defined in order to obtain the general model. With regard to this criterion, a calibration step is needed, both to overcome the natural limitations of the simplified model and to ensure the correct computation of the general model. The application of this modeling approach to a part of the inland navigation network in the north of France serves as the case study for this work.

In this paper, the details of a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) database, collected over artificial disbonded areas during an accelerated pavement testing at IFSTTAR’s carrousel, are presented. The database will be made available to the scientific communities. It may serve as a reference benchmark for both developing and testing the performance of various processing techniques for either interface detection and characterization, or monitoring purposes. In practice, GPR data have been collected over three artificial defects (tack-free, geotextile and sand-based), which were embedded between the top and the base layers. The data collection was organized in a two-stage experiments and covers the full life-cycle of the pavement structure. During the first stage that took place in 2012–13, data were collected at each of 10k, 50k, 100k, 200k, 250k and 300k loading cycles. The second measurement campaign was performed in 2019 and lasted up to 720k loading cycles. The database merges two types of existing radar technologies and configurations. Two stepped-frequency radar with 1.5 and 4.5 GHz as center frequency and two impulse radar systems, working at 2.6 and 1.5 GHz, were tested during this experiment.

This chapter shows that there is no single solution but rather a whole range of urban logistics spaces (ULSs) between which local authorities must decide on the basis of the objectives assigned to these facilities. It proposes the criteria to be taken into account and the institutional and regulatory measures that appear best adapted. The chapter classifies the different types of ULS and, for each of the six categories identified, specifies their scope of application, the elements regarding implementation and/or operating costs, and details the appropriate accompanying measures needed to favor their success. The six categories are the Urban Logistics Zone (ULZ), the Urban Distribution Center (UDC), the Vehicle Reception Point (VRP), the Goods Reception Point (GRP), the Urban Logistics Box (ULB) and the "mobile" Urban Logistics Space (mULS). Container shipping provides a rare example of a global transport network that went through tremendous technological and geographic changes in the last decades or so. This chapter proposes for the first time an empirical analysis of no less than 40 years of inter-port vessel movement data (1977-2016) to describe the evolving properties of the global container shipping network. Main results confirm a number of stylized facts such as the growing size, connectivity, and centralization of this network due to several factors such as economies of scale in liner shipping and the rationalization of related maritime services, the emergence of hub ports, etc. We also provide a new cartography of how had the global container shipping network been geographically distributed over time, thereby highlighting major shifts in terms of port hierarchies and main corridors. We believe that this chapter will contribute to a better understanding of the complex linkages between network structure, technological change, and spatial change, opening the way for new research paths on maritime transport research and network science in general when focusing on evolutionary dynamics.

The IDS framework was designed for safety-sensitive networks that involve limited-access closed networks such as the networks for command and control systems or Air Traffic Control (ATC) systems. The constraint engine generated by the framework supports real-time performance while ensuring the intended, normal behaviour of its target networks. We present the IDS framework in terms of its internal DSL representation as well as its transformation mechanisms to generate the constraint engine code. Comparing the autogenerated version against a manually implemented, optimized version of the constraint engine indicates no significant difference in terms of their performance.

This technique consists essentially in introducing and providing targeted ``potential' users with one (or more) simple artefact(s) illustrative of the considered emerging technology so that the participants can put and use it at home, in their daily environment during a long time, i.e. several days or even weeks. The main assumption is that users' ideation is stimulated by handling the artefact and projecting possible uses from their individual's daily physical and social environment. This study examines to what extend the «probe» technique can support users in their elicitation of creative uses as possible precursors of «latent needs» related to an emerging technology. The technique was compared with a standard prototype exploration situation where subjects came to the laboratory to be introduced to, to manipulate and to test the artefact before eliciting creative uses. Additionally, two eliciting conditions (individual vs. group) were contrasted in order to investigate the effect of social construction on the generation of creative ideas. The results suggest that the ``probe' condition significantly exceeds the in-laboratory prototype-based production condition both in terms of quantity and quality of ideas. We also replicated the result that individuals working alone produced significantly more idea than those working interactively within a group. We finally discussed the factors that may explain these results and the perspectives.
