Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration is one of the key variables of the ‘Earth system’ — the web of interactions between the atmosphere, oceans, soils and living things that determines conditions at the Earth surface. Atmospheric CO2 plays several roles in this system. For example, it is the carbon source for nearly all terrestrial green plants, and the source of carbonic acid to weather rocks. It is also an important greenhouse gas, with a central role to play in modulating the climate of the planet. During the five thousand years prior to the industrial revolution, we know (from measurements of air trapped in firn ice and ice cores) that atmospheric CO2 varied globally by less than 10 ppm from a concentration of 280 ppm (Indermuhle et al. 1999). During the late Quaternary glaciations, the regular advance and retreat of the ice was accompanied by, and to some extent at least driven by (Li et al. 1998; Shackleton 2000), an oscillation in atmospheric CO2 of about 80 ppm. Evidence from the geologically recent past indicates, therefore, that quite small changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide have big effects on planetary climate. Conversely, a stable concentration of CO2 is necessary for a stable climate. By this reasoning, we can be fairly certain that human activities will have a major effect on the climate of the planet in the near future, given that we have raised CO2 by 90 ppm in the last 150 years and it is projected to double from the pre-industrial concentration during the coming century. This gives our investigations into sources and sinks of carbon dioxide a special urgency.

Glaciers and ice caps exert a strong influence on Earth’s environment and climate. They can grow and decay, change the sea level, control the albedo and shape the mountains and continents on which they reside. During the last glacial period the expanding glaciers surged frequently and brought an enormous number of icebergs into the North Atlantic which caused a whole suite of violent climatic oscillations (Heinrich events, Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles) (Bond et al., 1992; Broecker et al., 1985; Johnsen et al., 1972).

Ice retreat on volcanoes reduces pressure at the surface of the Earth and induces stress changes in magmatic systems. The consequences can include increased generation of magma at depth, increased magma capture in the crust, and modification of failure conditions of magma chambers. We review the methodology to evaluate each of these effects, and consider the influence of ongoing ice retreat on volcanoes at the Mid-Atlantic divergent plate boundary in Iceland. Evaluation of each of these effects requires a series of assumptions regarding the rheology of the crust and mantle, and the nature of magmatic systems, contributing to relatively large uncertainty in response of a magmatic system to climate warming and associated ice retreat. Pressure release melting due to ice cap retreat in Iceland may at present times generate a similar amount of magma as plate tectonic processes; larger than realized previously. However, new modelling shows that part of this magma may be captured in the crust, rather than being erupted. Gradual retreat of ice caps do steadily modify failure conditions at magma chambers, which is highly dependent on their geometry and depth, as well as the details of ice load variations. A model is presented where long-term ice retreat at Katla volcano decreases the likelihood of eruption, as more magma is needed in the magma chamber to cause failure than in the absence of the ice retreat.

International audience; In this paper the application of numerical and physical models for the simulation of airborne pollutants in urban areas are presented. The assessment of the impact of cruise ships during the hoteling phase in the port of Naples is considered as case study. A physical model of the urban area of Naples has been realized (scale 1:500) and tested in the wind tunnel facility of the Ecole Central de Lyon. Results of wind tunnel tests are compared with CALPUFF and CFD simulations with the aim to validate the performances of the models. The results obtained give useful information for an optimized use of dispersion models.

ABSTRACTThe most recent comprehensive database of Martian impact craters was the result of the work of impact crater scientists (S.J. Robbins and B.M. Hynek) who carefully examined the available high-resolution imagery of Mars. Building on this previous work, we present the result of an alternative approach involving 56 planetary scientists and trained students. A web platform was designed for this purpose. All impact craters larger than 1 km in diameter were classified according to a simplified classification scheme, recording the primary or secondary nature of the crater, and the morphology of the ejecta (single, double, or multiple layered ejecta rampart sinuous [LERS], or low-aspect-ratio layer ejecta [LARLE]). In total, 8445 LERS craters, 24,530 partially buried craters, 55,309 secondary craters, and 288,155 craters in the category “standard” were identified. Our assessment differs for 8145 entries in the original database compiled by Robbins and Hynek, which are not considered to be impact structures. In this work, ~39,000 secondary craters have been associated with 108 primary craters. Coupled to the existing database, the database we propose here offers a complementary way to investigate the geological history of Mars. More specifically, the completion of layered ejecta crater morphologies down to 1 km and the connection established between secondary and primary impact crater sources will allow the implementation of statistical studies to reveal the spatial and temporal evolution of the impacted material characteristics. Thanks to the simplified classification we performed here, this version of the database can be easily used as a training data set for crater identification algorithms based on machine-learning techniques with the aim to identify smaller impact craters and to automatically define their morphological characteristics. Since it is not possible to confirm an impact structure from remote-sensing data alone, any Martian impact database at this stage remains subjective, and its assessment must be facilitated. The interface we developed for this participative project can be directly used for this purpose and for continuous updates and improvements of this work, in particular, with the latest high-resolution imagery releases such as the CTX global mosaic by J.L. Dickson and others, but also as a platform for building specific databases of craters or any other structures located in a particular region of interest.

The complete and well-studied pelagic carbonate successions from the Umbria- Marche basin (Italy) permit the study of the event-rich stratigraphic interval around the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary (e.g., Deccan volcanism, boundary impact, Paleocene recovery, and climate). To test the robustness of various proxy records (bulk carbonate δ13C, δ18O, 87Sr/86Sr, and Ca, Fe, Sr, and Mn concentrations) inside the Umbria-Marche basin, several stratigraphically equivalent sections were investigated (Bottaccione Gorge, Contessa Highway, Fornaci East quarry, Frontale, Morello, and Petriccio core). Besides the classical Gubbio sections of Bottaccione and Contessa, the new Morello section is put forward as an alternative location for this stratigraphic interval because it is less altered by burial diagenesis. Elemental profiles (Ca, Fe, Sr, Mn) acquired by handheld X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) efficiently provide regional chemostratigraphic and paleoenvironmental information. The Deccan volcanism, the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary, the characteristic pattern of the Sr/Ca profile across the boundary driven by the extinction and recovery of coccolithophores, and the Dan- C2 hyperthermal event are examples of such recorded paleoenvironmental events. Moreover, cyclostratigraphic analyses of proxies of detrital input (magnetic susceptibility and Fe concentrations) show the imprint in the sedimentary record of a 2.4 m.y. eccentricity minimum around 66.45-66.25 Ma, and suggest that the occurrence of the Dan-C2 hyperthermal event was astronomically paced.

Submarine landslides have been identified in almost all ocean basins worldwide. The largest submarine landslides occur on very shallow slopes and can be far larger than any terrestrial landslide. Submarine landslides can produce tsunami whose far-reaching effects can rival those produced by earthquake-tsunamis and threaten increasingly populated coastlines. Even small landslides can damage very expensive and critically important offshore infrastructure, such as pipelines used for oil and gas recovery, and telecommunication cables that now carry over 95% of digital data traffic. A better understanding of submarine landslide processes, including triggering mechanisms, preconditioning factors, timing, and frequency as well as dynamics of submarine landslide, and their consequences are of clear societal and economic importance. Despite their importance, many fundamental submarine landslide processes are still poorly understood. We currently have many studies that have mapped and sampled submarine landslide deposits; however, in order to fill outstanding but key knowledge gaps, future studies may have to go beyond this in order to unravel processes governing submarine landslides with even more interdisciplinary approaches. This chapter provides a very short review about submarine landslide studies, with emphasis on the emerging needs in future landslide research. Peer Reviewed

International audience; Nowadays the interest of geotechnical engineers for green solutions is being developed and the use of vegetation as a reinforcement to improve slope stability is growing. The sliding surface of shallow landslides tends to not exceed 1.5–2 m depth, and as a consequence it can be crossed by roots that, in this case, work as a stabilizing measure. Therefore, the study of the soil-roots interaction is necessary to quantify the contribution of vegetation to the stability of shallow landslides. The goal of this paper is to provide an overview of the root failure mechanisms that can occur along the sliding surface and of the forces applied by roots, in order to evaluate the safety factor of a reinforced slope. Several prevailing stress states occur along a shallow landslide failure surface: tension stress at the slide crest, shear stresses along the base of the unstable soil layer and passive earth pressures at the slope toe. Some considerations are also made regarding acceptable simplifications, in terms of root geometry and soil-root friction strength, that are currently assumed in the literature.

International audience; A GWR superconducting gravimeter of the new generation (OSG-60) has been installed in July 2010 in sub-humid West Africa, at the Djougou station in Benin. This station is located in the AMMA-CATCH long term hydrological observing system. We present the first results in terms of instrumental drift as well as the calibration results using FG5 absolute gravity measurements. We show that geophysical contributions due to hydrological load can bias the initial drift estimate. The noise level is compared to the Strasbourg SG as well as to the reference New Low Noise Model (NLNM) used in seismology. We also investigate the gravity response to atmospheric pressure changes and show that, because of the presence of large thermal tides, the gravity response to mass changes in the atmosphere is more complex than in the simple case of a constant barometric admittance.
