    Abstract Digital Image Modelling is becoming a standard approach in epigraphic studies, mostly expressed in the diffusion practice of research groups which want their materials being publicly accessible. However, there is an important lack of works which seek for the use of 3D tools to improve the epigraphic analysis and text reading. Therefore, this paper attempts to show the application of Photogrammetry Structure from Motion and Digital Image Modelling to 3D record and analyse inscriptions that are in poor state of preservation, aiming to resolve some text-restitution problems and contribute towards the definition of new methodologies in Roman epigraphy.

    AbstractThe interdisciplinary field known as digital humanities (DH) is represented in various forms in the teaching and research practiced in iSchools. Building on the work of an iSchools organization committee charged with exploring digital humanities curricula, we present findings from a series of related studies exploring aspects of DH teaching, education, and research in iSchools, often in collaboration with other units and disciplines. Through a survey of iSchool programs and an online DH course registry, we investigate the various education models for DH training found in iSchools, followed by a detailed look at DH courses and curricula, explored through analysis of course syllabi and course descriptions. We take a brief look at collaborative disciplines with which iSchools cooperate on DH research projects or in offering DH education. Next, we explore DH careers through an analysis of relevant job advertisements. Finally, we offer some observations about the management and administrative challenges and opportunities related to offering a new iSchool DH program. Our results provide a snapshot of the current state of digital humanities in iSchools which may usefully inform the design and evolution of new DH programs, degrees, and related initiatives.

    In addition to providing pleasant and stimulating experiences, complex cultural collections can require significant amounts of cognitive work on the part of visitors. Whether collections are situated in physical spaces or presented via web-based interfaces, the sheer richness and diversity of artefacts and their associated information can frequently lead to cognitive overload and fatigue. In this article we explore visualization methods that can be used to fend off fatigue and to support cognitive tasks such as collection exploration and conceptual comprehension. We discuss a variety of options to generate collection representations with multiple views and focus on the rarely heeded challenge of how to integrate information from these views into a bigger picture. By utilizing multiple space-time cube representations (through the PolyCube framework), we discuss an effective approach to integrating and mediating multiple perspectives on cultural collection data. We illustrate its potential by the means of a case study on the work of Charles W. Cushman and outline first insights drawn from a heuristic evaluation. Finally, we situate our approach within the larger epistemic and methodological environment of humanities approaches to visualization design.

    Este será um estudo transversal, observacional e comparativo de jovens atletas femininas para ajudar a desenvolver duas capacidades físicas essenciais: a força e a flexibilidade. O objetivo será caracterizar descritiva e comparativamente a força e a flexibilidade de praticantes de Ginástica e de Patinagem Artística. Além disso pretendemos perceber em que medida se observavam influências mútuas entre as variáveis avaliadas. Os participantes são 35 atletas femininas de ginástica (9.8 ± 2.05 anos) e 35 atletas femininas de patinagem artística (10,57 ± 2,66 anos). Foram avaliados níveis de força e flexibilidade através da Bateria de Testes do FitEscola. O estudo comparativo paramétrico realizado sinalizou diferenças estatisticamente significativas (p=0,02) em apenas uma prova: no teste de abdominais, o seu valor (t=-2,30) sinaliza melhores resultados no grupo das patinadoras. O estudo correlacional paramétrico (r de Pearson) sinalizou correlações estatisticamente significativas entre as variáveis de desempenho, no entanto apenas encontrámos uma associação positiva (p=0,02) entre a variável grupo e a força abdominal. Os resultados obtidos mostram que não foram observáveis diferenças significativas entre ginastas e patinadoras na maioria das qualidades físicas avaliadas. A exceção foram os resultados obtidos na avaliação da força abdominal e da flexibilidade dos membros inferiores. No entanto, as pequenas diferenças que não chegam a ser significativas devem-se ao facto de nesta idade as atletas ainda não realizarem trabalhos específicos de força, sendo o enfase dado às habilidades motoras coordenativas para que a técnica seja melhorada This will be a cross-sectional, observational and comparative study of young female athletes to help develop two essential physical abilities: strength and flexibility. The objective will be to characterize descriptively and comparatively the strength and flexibility of gymnastics and figure skating practitioners. Furthermore, we intend to understand the extent to which mutual influences were observed between the evaluated variables. Participants are 35 female gymnastics athletes (9.8 ± 2.05 years) and 35 female figure skating athletes (10.57 ± 2.66 years). Levels of strength and flexibility were assessed using the FitEscola Test Battery. The comparative parametric study performed showed statistically significant differences (p=0.02) in only one test: in the sit-up test, its value (t=-2.30) indicates better results in the group of skaters. The parametric correlational study (Pearson's r) signaled statistically significant correlations between the performance variables, however we only found a positive association (p=0.02) between the group variable and abdominal strength. The results obtained show that no significant differences were observed between gymnasts and skaters in most of the physical qualities evaluated. The exception was the results obtained in the assessment of abdominal strength and lower limb flexibility. However, the small differences that are not significant are because, at this age, the athletes still do not perform more specific strength work, with the emphasis being given to coordinating motor skills so that the technique can be improved

    Abstract This progress article focuses on an overview of the potential and challenges of using contemporary Geographic Information System (GIS) applications for the visual rendering and analysis of textual spatial data. The case study is an ancient traveling narrative, Pausanias’s Description of Greece (Periegesis Hellados) which was written in the second century CE. First, we describe the process of converting the volumes to spatial data using a customized version of the open-source digital semantic annotation platform Recogito. Then the focus shifts to the implementation of collected and organized spatial data to a number of GIS applications: namely Google Maps, DARIAH Geo-Browser, Gephi, Palladio and ArcGIS. Through empirical experimentation with spatial data and their implementation in different platforms, our paper charts the ways in which contemporary GIS applications may be implemented to cast new light on ancient understandings of identity, space, and place.

    The Henri Poincaré correspondence is a corpus of letters sent and received by this mathematician. The edition of this correspondence is a long-term project begun during the 1990s. Since 1999, a website is devoted to publish online this correspondence with digitized letters. In 2017, it has been decided to reforge this website using Omeka S. This content management system offers useful services but some user needs have led to the development of an RDFS infrastructure associated to it. Approximate and explained searches are managed thanks to SPARQL query transformations. A prototype for efficient RDF annotation of this corpus (and similar corpora) has been designed and implemented. This article deals with these three research issues and how they are addressed. International audience

    Authors: TOSCANO, MAURIZIO; Rabadán, Aroa; Ros, Salvador; González-Blanco, Elena;

    The objective of this study was to provide the global community of interested scholars with an updated understanding of digital humanities in Spain, in terms of researchers and research centres, disciplines involved and research topics of interest, trends in digital resources development, main funding bodies and the evolution of their investment since the early nineties. One of the characteristics that differentiates this study from previous approaches is the information used to carry out the research. It combines large datasets of publicly available data from trusted sources with a handpicked selection of records grouping information scattered over the Web. Most of the evidence detected by other studies has been numerically confirmed. At the same time, the new metrics and values established constitute a reference base for monitoring the future evolution of the discipline, and thus favour comparisons. Half of the researchers were found to be affiliated to only nine institutions, whereas the other half of them were scattered across 84 locations. Department affiliation showed a varied pattern of the different degrees of specialization in each institution. Although the major historic role played by Philology was confirmed, the rising interest of other areas of the Humanities and Social Science produces a wider picture, which helped to identify five large clusters of research topics, centred on major disciplines. The quantitative analysis of funding, a dimension almost unexplored in the Humanities, proved to be a valuable way to assess the discipline and its historical evolution. In fact, it revealed interesting trends that led to our proposal of a three-phase periodization in the consolidation of digital humanities in Spain. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations regarding how to deal with issues that could harm the future development of this research area and the role that Spanish researchers can play in the international context. The Archaeology Data Service (ADS) is an archive working at a national level in the UK, ensuring that archaeologists have access to high quality and dependable digital resources, including openly licensed legacy data for reuse. The ADS acts as a metadata aggregator for archaeological data held by larger heritage agencies and smaller regional organizations and participates in international aggregation infrastructure projects such as ARIADNE, which allows users to access archaeological resources held in many countries from a single interface. Large-scale infrastructures can facilitate the building of long-term, complex relationships and active collaborations, not just technical solutions. This paper reflects on the roles of stewardship and equity within ARIADNE and the ADS, two large-scale online research infrastructures, and how these types of infrastructures may help to create a more collaborative archaeology, including lessons learned, challenges and opportunities, and thoughts for the future.

    Authors: TOSCANO, MAURIZIO; Rabadán, Aroa; Ros, Salvador; González-Blanco, Elena;

    The objective of this study was to provide the global community of interested scholars with an updated understanding of digital humanities in Spain, in terms of researchers and research centres, disciplines involved and research topics of interest, trends in digital resources development, main funding bodies and the evolution of their investment since the early nineties. One of the characteristics that differentiates this study from previous approaches is the information used to carry out the research. It combines large datasets of publicly available data from trusted sources with a handpicked selection of records grouping information scattered over the Web. Most of the evidence detected by other studies has been numerically confirmed. At the same time, the new metrics and values established constitute a reference base for monitoring the future evolution of the discipline, and thus favour comparisons. Half of the researchers were found to be affiliated to only nine institutions, whereas the other half of them were scattered across 84 locations. Department affiliation showed a varied pattern of the different degrees of specialization in each institution. Although the major historic role played by Philology was confirmed, the rising interest of other areas of the Humanities and Social Science produces a wider picture, which helped to identify five large clusters of research topics, centred on major disciplines. The quantitative analysis of funding, a dimension almost unexplored in the Humanities, proved to be a valuable way to assess the discipline and its historical evolution. In fact, it revealed interesting trends that led to our proposal of a three-phase periodization in the consolidation of digital humanities in Spain. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations regarding how to deal with issues that could harm the future development of this research area and the role that Spanish researchers can play in the international context.     Authors: Holly Wright; Julian D. Richards;
