description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Part of book or chapter of book 2010 EnglishPublisher:Dublin Institute of Technology Publicly fundedAuthors: Smith, Peter; Butcher, Jim;Smith, Peter; Butcher, Jim;This book contains an edited collection of papers presented at the Tourism and Hospitality Research in Ireland Conference 2009 (THRIC). This annual conference provides an invaluable opportunity for Irish and international tourism and hospitality academics and practitioners to debate the key contemporary challenges facing the sector. Based on this selection of conference papers a broad range of issues are addressed in the following chapters. These are issues, which are pertinent not only for Irish tourism and hospitality academics, policy makers and industry, but also resonate with international counterparts. Contributions to this book are made by an eclectic mix of highly established and published academics and those who are conducting their PhD research. The areas explored in this book span sociology, business and tourism and deal with issues as diverse as performance management, transport, sustainability, city breaks, sports, volunteer and dark tourism. Rather than thematically group chapters we have left them as stand alone contributions, however common threads and linkages are highlighted in the introductory chapter.

In the beginning, it was only very peripheral activities that were outsourced, i.e. blue-collar (lower skilled) work but this is now all changing with the outsourcing of white-collar jobs. The digital revolution, the falling costs of transport and telecom costs and the opening up of the global economy helped the outsourcing market. For companies going down or contemplating the road of outsourcing there are both potential benefits and challenges, for example, the type of outsourcing they want to get involved in, and the country they want to outsource to. Outsourcing can potentially happen anywhere in the world where the costs are lower and the quality higher. The main places that have been used for outsourcing have been India, China, Ireland, South-East Asia, Russia, Mexico and the Czech Republic. The research currently underway is initially focusing on a literature review of current outsourcing applications in the market place. From this literature review, a questionnaire is being developed to assess the impact Outsourcing has on businesses. This research focuses on the Irish Market place.

Based on the exploration of academic literature and a survey on e-Marketplaces / procurement service providers (PSPs) in the automotive and electronics industry sectors, an overall statement is proposed: Effective participation in electronic purchasing consortia can have the potential to enhance competitive advantage. Implementation therefore requires a clear and detailed understanding of the major process structures and drivers at the e-Marketplace / PSP level of analysis.

As part of its mission to promote the development of supply chain expertise in Irish business, it designs and delivers executive modular learning programmes. In 2004, as part of a drive to create more flexible learning opportunities for course participants, NITL designed and implemented an eLearning programme, which involved converting traditionally tutored modules to online modules. This paper describes the rationale behind this initiative and the significance of technology as an enabling tool for executive education, as well as detailing the design and implementation processes for the pilot module. The paper concludes with a critique of the expected and actual benefits realised, as well as future development considerations.

In the first experiment, we embedded the FBG into a 3D printed polymer structure, whereas in the second experiment, the coating was polymerized around the fibre. In both cases, the response of the grating was unchanged, without any loss or distortion of the FBG signal compared with the bare fibre response. The design of the polymer coating was optimised for the measurement of a single measurand. We highlighted two possible applications: surface bend deformation monitoring and improved-sensitivity temperature sensing.

We compare with performance characteristics of Type IA and Type I Bragg gratings exposed to the effects of Co60 gamma-irradiation. A Bragg peak shift of 190 pm was observed for Type IA gratings written in Fibercore PS-1250/1500 photosensitive fiber at a radiation dose of 116 kGy. This is the largest wavelength shift recorded to date under radiation exposure. The Type IA and Type I gratings show different kinetics under radiation and during post-radiation annealing; this can be exploited for the design of a grating based dosimetry system.

The non-uniform laser-induced perturbation results in light coupling from the core mode to a greater number of cladding modes than is the case with their UV laser inscribed counterparts, and this is made evident from the surrounding refractive index (SRI) grating response. Femtosecond inscribed long period gratings are shown to simultaneously couple to multiple sets of cladding modes. A 400μm LPG is shown to result in attenuation peaks that have both blue and red wavelength shifts over a 1250nm to 1700nm wavelength range. This gives rise to SRI sensitivities far greater than anything achievable by monitoring a single attenuation peak. The maximum sensitivity produced by monitoring a single attenuation peak was 1106nm/RIU, whereas monitoring opposing wavelength shifts resulted in a significantly improved sensitivity of 1680nm/RIU.

These devices showed high spectral sensitivity in the aqueous index regime ranging up to 4000 nm/RIU for wavelength and 800 dB/RIU for intensity. The devices were then coated with human thrombin binding aptamer. Several concentrations of thrombin in buffer solution were made, ranging from 1nM to 1µM. All the concentrations were detectable by the devices demonstrating that sub-nM concentrations may be monitored.
