description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Report 2023 EnglishZenodo EC | PALOMERA, EC | OPERAS-PLUS, EC | OPERAS-PBłaszczyńska, Marta; Melinščak Zlodi, Iva; Morka, Agata; Proudman, Vanessa; Stone, Graham;Given the dynamic rate of change in the OA books business models landscape, the OPERAS Open Access Business Models Special Interest Group launched a survey in 2021 to 1) improve our understanding of the scholarly publishing landscape and of the challenges that publishers face in the context of publishing OA monographs; and 2) to identify main trends (including opportunities and challenges) and the knowledge of collaborative funding and infrastructure models in OA publishing in Social Science and the Humanities. This white paper updates and expands an earlier version published in 2021, which presented the preliminary analysis of the findings. Despite a small sample of presses meaning that no strong trends ought to be discussed, several insights were drawn and should be considered important directions for the future. Key findings in the report have been grouped into three main areas: collaboration, funding, and support. The report found that, although not opposed to the idea, a majority of presses do not engage in collaboration, specifically collaborative models for shared infrastructure, mainly due to the lack of knowledge and information, or perceived lack of need. This indicates that, for OA books, we are still at the early stage of the adoption curve for collaborative shared infrastructure. In terms of funding, most publishers perceive themselves to be somewhat sustainable. For institutional publishers, parent organisations are crucial as providers of financial or non-monetary support of OA. In addition, most publishers stress the need to have more resources and rely on more than one funding source, including grants and subsidies. The report found that awareness-raising and targeted support and training could be used to engage the presses but further incentivisation may be required to encourage publishers to collaborate more widely. We believe that the insights from this white paper may be interesting to a number of projects, such as DIAMAS, OPERAS-PLUS, and Palomera and have presented areas for further research and more specific actionable points for these projects.

Research infrastructures (RIs) are organizations that enable scientists to use specific facilities, resources and services in order to accelerate scientific achievements, break boundaries and promote sustainable research. Fostering RI partnerships across borders has the potential to improve the efficiency and quality of research to tackle the many challenges faced by society today. RI-VIS is a Horizon 2020-funded project to increase the visibility and raise awareness of European RIs to new communities in Europe and beyond. This report, as part of RI-VIS, focuses on ways to increase collaboration between Latin American and European RIs. It collates the insights of experts from Latin American RIs, European RIs and policy makers into sections that cover examples of successful collaboration, lessons learned and possible challenges/bottlenecks.

One of the main goals of the project is to ensure that SSH will be present in EOSC and that their specifics are taken into account. In this regard, an important point is to be able to give high visibility to the research data used in Social Science and Humanities following FAIR data principles. This can be achieved by fostering "Data Citation" through providing a common mechanism to cite SSH data and build stronger links between data and publications. An expected side effect would be to enhance the reproducibility of SSH research, which is not very common nowadays. In line with these goals, this report delivers an overview of existing data-citing mechanisms intended for citing data, that are currently used in different communities with a focus on the SSH. It then provides some guidelines describing what is relevant in the SSHOC context with respect to the technology to be implemented and also about the structuring of the content.

It is the SSH component of the EOSC Marketplace. Previous initiatives have shown that curation of content is the key element to maintain the attractiveness and the utility of a discovery portal like the SSH Open Marketplace.1 Thus at each stage of the development of the Marketplace, from the first ingestion of existing catalogues to the curation sprint, curation has been at the heart of conception. This emphasis, based on previous examples and the work done throughout the SSHOC project, has led to profound changes in the data model, definition of quality criteria, standardization of the content as the team adapts the machinery of the Marketplace based on lessons learned. This continuous work has laid the foundation of the development of Editorial Guidelines which will be used by future curation actors as well as the definition of their different curation roles and the organisation of their relationship.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Report 2023 EnglishZenodo EC | PALOMERA, EC | OPERAS-PLUS, EC | OPERAS-PBłaszczyńska, Marta; Melinščak Zlodi, Iva; Morka, Agata; Proudman, Vanessa; Stone, Graham;Given the dynamic rate of change in the OA books business models landscape, the OPERAS Open Access Business Models Special Interest Group launched a survey in 2021 to 1) improve our understanding of the scholarly publishing landscape and of the challenges that publishers face in the context of publishing OA monographs; and 2) to identify main trends (including opportunities and challenges) and the knowledge of collaborative funding and infrastructure models in OA publishing in Social Science and the Humanities.

The outcomes collected here can be divided into two groups of innovations regarding 1) the operation of OPERAS, and 2) its activities. The “operational” issues include the ways in which an innovative research infrastructure should be governed (Chapter 1) as well as the business models for open access publications in Social Sciences and Humanities (Chapter 2). The other group of issues is dedicated to strategic areas where OPERAS and its services may play an instrumental role in providing, enabling, or unlocking innovation: FAIR data (Chapter 3), bibliodiversity and multilingualism in scholarly communication (Chapter 4), the future of scholarly writing (Chapter 5), and quality assessment (Chapter 6). Each chapter provides an overview of the main findings and challenges with emphasis on recommendations for OPERAS and other stakeholders like e-infrastructures, publishers, SSH researchers, research performing organisations, policy makers, and funders. Links to data and further publications stemming from work concerning particular tasks are located at the end of each chapter.
