This text elucidates how we make use of the FAIR data principles.

The subject “Science and Technology in the First World War” has so far been treated from the perspective on inventions and the development of new weapons, and often the focus has been on the topic of chemical warfare at the expense of other important dimensions. The approach of this Archival Research Guide, by contrast, comes from the social sciences and focuses on the establishment of relevant scientific, military and governmental bodies and on the personal networks established during the war. By examining these institutions and networks country by country, comparisons between them can be drawn, enabling further research with regard to the sociology of institutions. By pointing to the connections and channels of exchange between the nations and institutions under consideration, this approach opens up a transnational perspective and supports the paradoxal insight that transnational ties can dissolve national obstacles while simultaneously strengthening the nation-states themselves. On the individual level, the ARG takes the role of intellectuals into account, for whom scientific objectivity / neutrality and patriotic commitment seemed to have been no contradiction. It is remarkable that the First World War led to the establishment of several institutions aiming at funding science through the state, most notably in the case of France (CNRS), the U.S. (NACA/NASA) and Russia (KEPS). The core of the our programme exists of two half-day workshops on software packages that may help the researcher automate some aspects of the transcription process. The first will deal with ABBYY, still one of the best software packages around for OCRing digitised print materials. Focusing on the software’s possible advantages and pitfalls, this workshop will show the participants how to prepare their documents in order to achieve the best OCR (optical character recognition) results. The second workshop will introduce Transkribus, a software package that has recently made great advancements in optically recognising characters in handwritten materials.

Different aspects related to higher education programs in Digital Humanities (DH), whether, what and how they should be organized, are currently discussed at many higher education institutions in Nordic countries and beyond. The aim of this proposed workshop at DHN 2017 is to bring together scholars, educators and others interested in different aspects of Digital Humanities education to explore the current potential and challenges and opportunities related to the teaching and learning of Digital Humanities.

The DARIAH-EU Annual Event features a series of engaging keynote lectures and interactive sessions, which bring together researchers, technologists, data scientists and cultural heritage professionals. This year's event will focus on the subject of sustainability of research infrastructures.

On 21 and 22 March 2017, the 9th TextGrid. DARIAH User Meeting will take place at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften) in Munich. The conference focusses on digital editions and geographic data. As at the 8th User Meeting, the event will provide an opportunity for beginners to become acquainted with TextGrid by processing typical use cases. Am 21. und 22. März 2017 findet an der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (BAdW) in München das neunte TextGrid/DARIAH-Nutzertreffen mit den Schwerpunkten Digitale Editionen und Geodaten statt. Wie beim achten Nutzertreffen soll die Veranstaltung vor allem EinsteigerInnen die Möglichkeit geben, TextGrid anhand von typischen Nutzungsszenarien kennenzulernen.
