Research data keyboard_double_arrow_right Dataset 2019Embargo end date: 30 Jan 2019 EnglishPublisher:Dryad Orio, Alessandro; Bergström, Ulf; Florin, Ann-Britt; Lehmann, Andreas; Šics, Ivo; Casini, Michele;Aim: The interdependencies between trophic interactions, environmental factors and anthropogenic forcing determine how species distributions change over time. Large changes in species distributions have occurred as a result of climate change. The objective of this study was to analyse how the spatial distribution of cod and flounder have changed in the Baltic Sea during the past four decades characterized by large hydrological changes. Location: Baltic Sea Taxon: Cod (Gadus morhua) and flounder (Platichthys flesus) Methods: Catch per unit of effort (CPUE) data for adult and juvenile cod and for adult flounder were modelled using Delta-Generalized additive models including environmental and geographical variables between 1979 and 2016. From the annual CPUE predictions for each species, yearly distribution maps and depth distribution curves were obtained. Mean depth and the depth range were estimated to provide an indication on preferred depth and habitat occupancy. Results: Adult and juvenile cod showed a contraction in their distribution in the southern areas of the Baltic Sea. Flounder, instead, showed an expansion in its distribution with an increase in abundance in the northern areas. The depth distributions showed a progressive shift of the mean depth of occurrence towards shallower waters for adult cod and flounder and towards deeper waters for juvenile cod, as well as a contraction of the species depth ranges, evident mainly from the late 1980s. Main conclusions: Our study illustrates large changes in the spatial distribution of cod and flounder in the Baltic Sea. The changes in depth distribution occurred from the late 1980s are probably due to a combination of expanded areas of hypoxia in deep waters and an increase in predation risk in shallow waters. The net effect of these changes is an increased spatial overlap between life stages and species, which may amplify cod cannibalism and the interaction strength between cod and flounder. Data_cod_flounderAdult cod, juvenile cod and flounder CPUE data (in grams). The datasets contain also the associated bottom temperature, salinity and oxygen concentration of each haul as well as the latitude and longitude in decimal degrees.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.euResearch data keyboard_double_arrow_right Dataset 2019Publisher:Mendeley Funded by:EC | SEISMICEC| SEISMICAuthors: Boulton, Carolyn;Boulton, Carolyn; This text file contains the complete experimental dataset. Data for each experiment listed in Table 1 appear as columns of displacement (mm) and coefficient of friction (mu). Acquired raw torque and normal force data were processed to obtain shear stress and normal stress measurements respectively. The externally measured torque was corrected for fluid pressure and shear displacement-dependent friction of the Teflon-coated O-ring seals using calibration values obtained in runs with a dummy sample of carbon-coated PolyEtherEtherKeton with a known sliding friction; seal friction is typically around 0.03 kN (equivalent to ~1.5 MPa shear stress). The contribution of the Molykote-coated confining rings to the measured friction is negligible (see also den Hartog et al., 2012). The applied normal stress was corrected for the stress supported by the internal seals, the level of which is clearly visible during initial loading and was generally around 0.5 kN (equivalent to ~2 MPa normal stress acting on the sample). Repeat experiments (u644 and u713) on sample 181-1124C-44X-7, 4-6 cm (428.34 mbsf), yielded an analytical error of 0.03-0.05 mu. The analytical error is thought to reflect the fact that the second experiment was performed on the last remaining sample powder, which may have had more fine-grained clays (e.g., sample inter-variability), and/or because of variations in sample preparation. Knowledge of concentrations and elemental ratios of suspended particles are important for understanding many biogeochemical processes in the ocean. These include patterns of phytoplankton nutrient limitation as well as linkages between the cycles of carbon and nitrogen or phosphorus. To further enable studies of ocean biogeochemistry, we here present a global dataset compiled from published literature and consisting of 60811 measurements of particulate organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus analyzed as part of 70 cruises or time-series. The data are globally distributed and represent all major ocean regions as well as different depths in the water column. The global median C:P, N:P, and C:N ratios are 163, 22, and 6.6, respectively, but also includes a lot of variation between samples from different regions. Thus, this compilation will hopefully assist in a wide range of future studies of ocean elemental ratios. Marine particulate organic matterThe dataset includes information about latitude, longitude, depth and time of sampling of marine particulate organic phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbonCNP_data_DRYAD_edit_2.csv

In order to assess adolescents attitudes regarding the car of the future as presented by car manufacturers, we conducted a survey with over 200 participants. We made a 7.47 minute video collage from well-known car brands promotional material, which we showed to the survey participants in order to analyze their responses. The video features 10 different car manufacturers, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Google car, Rolls Royce, Amber mobility, Volkswagen, Byton, Nissan, and Honda. Our respondents appeared to be more concerned about other aspects of the car of the future than automation. Instead, their most commonly raised ethical concerns were the extensive use of AI, recommender systems, and related issues of autonomy and personal privacy. In line with Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) as well as Ethically Aligned Design (EAD) frameworks, we were able to identify the misalignment between what is currently imagined as the car of the future and the values held by prospective users, the challenges facing responsible governance, and suggest how to develop more desirable cars for the future
