SHAPE-ID has been funded by the European Commission to explore the challenge of how to better support the integration of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) perspectives into interdisciplinary research with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and other scientific disciplines, including Medicine, particularly in the context of addressing societal challenges. In this context, SHAPE-ID Work Package 3 (WP3) organised a series of workshops to learn directly from the experiences of researchers from across disciplines, as well as policy makers, funders and representatives from research performing organisations, industry and the cultural sector. This deliverable comprises two parts: Section A illustrates the matrix for integration of learning cases and the framework of analysis that was co-designed with the SHAPE-ID partners at the Co-Design Workshop, held at ISINNOVA, in Rome, on 13-14 June 2019. Section B illustrates a challenge-oriented research evaluation framework, criteria and tools proposed to evaluate research projects, as well as an evaluation methodology proposed for the learning workshops.

Digital data on tangible and intangible cultural assets is an essential part of daily life, communication and experience. It has a lasting influence on the perception of cultural identity as well as on the interactions between research, the cultural economy and society. Throughout the last three decades, many cultural heritage institutions have contributed a wealth of digital representations of cultural assets (2D digital reproductions of paintings, sheet music, 3D digital models of sculptures, monuments, rooms, buildings), audio-visual data (music, film, stage performances), and procedural research data such as encoding and annotation formats. The long-term preservation and FAIR availability of research data from the cultural heritage domain is fundamentally important, not only for future academic success in the humanities but also for the cultural identity of individuals and society as a whole. Up to now, no coordinated effort for professional research data management on a national level exists in Germany. NFDI4Culture aims to fill this gap and create a user-centered, research-driven infrastructure that will cover a broad range of research domains from musicology, art history and architecture to performance, theatre, film, and media studies. The research landscape addressed by the consortium is characterized by strong institutional differentiation. Research units in the consortium's community of interest comprise university institutes, art colleges, academies, galleries, libraries, archives and museums. This diverse landscape is also characterized by an abundance of research objects, methodologies and a great potential for data-driven research. In a unique effort carried out by the applicant and co-applicants of this proposal and ten academic societies, this community is interconnected for the first time through a federated approach that is ideally suited to the needs of the participating researchers. To promote collaboration within the NFDI, to share knowledge and technology and to provide extensive support for its users have been the guiding principles of the consortium from the beginning and will be at the heart of all workflows and decision-making processes. Thanks to these principles, NFDI4Culture has gathered strong support ranging from individual researchers to high-level cultural heritage organizations such as the UNESCO, the International Council of Museums, the Open Knowledge Foundation and Wikimedia. On this basis, NFDI4Culture will take innovative measures that promote a cultural change towards a more reflective and sustainable handling of research data and at the same time boost qualification and professionalization in data-driven research in the domain of cultural heritage. This will create a long-lasting impact on science, cultural economy and society as a whole.

International audience; Academic libraries in the Netherlands have the ambition to increase the knowledge level of their librarians on digital humanities (DH). Three libraries therefore set up a series of full-day training events aimed specifically at library professionals of academic and research libraries in the Netherlands, named DH Clinics. The aim of these clinics is to provide basic methodological competencies and technical skills in DH, for a diverse group of library employees, consisting of both subject and technical librarians with basic technical skills. The content of these sessions should 1) enable them to provide services to researchers and students, 2) identify remaining gaps in knowledge or skills that they could address by self-directed learning and 3) (possibly) to automate their daily library work. This paper describes final schedule of the DH Clinics, how we organised the design process by involving the user community and the lessons we learned.

To foster responsible research and innovation, research communities, institutions, and funders are shifting their practices and requirements towards Open Science. Open Science skills are becoming increasingly essential for researchers. Indeed general awareness of Open Science has grown among EU researchers, but the practical adoption can be further improved. Recognizing a gap between the needed and the provided training offer, the FOSTER project offers practical guidance and training to help researchers learn how to open up their research within a particular domain or research environment. Aiming for a sustainable approach, FOSTER focused on strengthening the Open Science training capacity by establishing and supporting a community of trainers. The creation of an Open Science training handbook was a first step towards bringing together trainers to share their experiences and to create an open and living knowledge resource. A subsequent series of train-the-trainer bootcamps helped trainers to find inspiration, improve their skills and to intensify exchange within a peer group. Four trainers, who attended one of the bootcamps, contributed a case study on their experiences and how they rolled out Open Science training within their own institutions. On its platform the project provides a range of online courses and resources to learn about key Open Science topics. FOSTER awards users gamification badges when completing courses in order to provide incentives and rewards, and to spur them on to even greater achievements in learning. The paper at hand describes FOSTER Plus’ training strategies, shares the lessons learnt and provides guidance on how to re-use the project’s materials and training approaches. Peer reviewed

In her capacity as guest editor, the author introduces a set of essays examining the trends, risks, needs, pressures, and prospects of the humanities after recent reforms to tertiary education throughout Europe. By focusing on the educational, cultural, and social value of research in the humanities, which also provide economic and democratic benefits, this special issue focuses on three key topics: “funding policies”, “evaluation”, and “cultural resources”. This article provides the background to the subject matter (Section 1) the context and a synopsis of the contributions, showing how and why these position papers by members of the humanities cluster of the Academia Europaea can provide this debate with new tools of analysis and diagnosis (Section 5). Finally, the concluding remarks highlight the Academia Europaea’s actions for the humanities (Section 6). a reflection on the controversial issues of quality control, measures of research productivity, and funding decisions as key drivers changing the humanities (Section 2) an overview of the current difficulties and prospects for “modernizing” the humanities (Section 3) the rationale for this special issue (Section 4)

Together with many other universities worldwide, the University of Göttingen has aimed to unlock the full potential of networked digital scientific communication by strengthening open access as early as the late 1990s. Open science policies at the institutional level consequently followed and have been with us for over a decade. However, for several reasons, their adoption often is still far from complete when it comes to the practices of researchers or research groups. To improve this situation at our university, there is dedicated support at the infrastructural level: the university library collaborates with several campus units in developing and running services, activities and projects in support of open access and open science. This article outlines our main activity areas and aligns them with the overall rationale to reach higher uptake and acceptance of open science practice at the university. The mentioned examples of our activities highlight how we seek to advance open science along the needs and perspectives of diverse audiences and by running it as a multi-stakeholder endeavor. Therefore, our activities involve library colleagues with diverse backgrounds, faculty and early career researchers, research managers, as well as project and infrastructure staff. We conclude with a summary of achievements and challenges to be faced.

Following D6.2 - SSHOC Community Engagement Strategy and building upon it, the SSHOC project has created this Building Expertise Strategy. It describes an initial plan for the project’s activities and tools to be used in order to build expertise among user communities. Moreover, it provides a framework for SSHOC training activities that aim to empower the SSHOC network to a greater level of expertise in Open Science for SSH, utilizing SSHOC services, tools and data throughout the research lifecycle and according to the FAIR Principles. In this sense, in collaboration and coordination, when possible and appropriate, with raising awareness activities, SSHOC is building its plan around three major tasks and certain types of activities: i) empowering users through existing and new training materials and online learning paths, ii) building expertise through the SSHOC Training Network and related tools (the SSHOC Train-the-trainer Toolkit, a recommended trainer directory, etc.) and activities (SSHOC train-the-trainer bootcamps, supporting training organizations in delivering national-level train-the-trainer workshops, identification of regional nodes, etc.) and iii) coordinating targeted training in the Social Sciences and Humanities, with the aim of developing a data-sharing culture following the FAIR principles. Through building expertise and empowering its network, SSHOC aims to provide its community with the necessary knowledge, skills, and expertise required to appropriately, effectively, and efficiently use and contribute to the SSHOC resources - both from disciplinary and cross-disciplinary perspectives. In this first phase of the project, we identified the major actors and audiences to be targeted, taking into account that (due to the nature of the project) the majority of the community is involved in SSHOC. At the same time, we identified, contextualized and (in many cases) established contact with training activities relevant for the project, especially in the cases where project partners either participate in these initiatives as partners or as experts/external actors, thus leveraging existing connections. Gaps and initiatives belonging to this category have been identified as well. In the course of the project, collaboration, coordination and/or co- location of activities will be established. As the activities under WP6 - Fostering Communities, Empowering Users and Building Expertise run horizontally in the project, a procedure has been set up to spread training activities across the project. This procedure accounts for geographic and disciplinary distribution, as well as expertise levels and training needs of the audience, available resources and activities of other WPs (WP3, WP4, WP5, WP8 and WP9 in particular), in order to set KPIs. The general format of activities has been agreed, with flexibility allowed in terms of formatting each training activity as this will allow WPs to adapt to specific training needs and current developments.

CO-OPERAS (https://www.go-fair.org/implementation-networks/overview/co-operas/) and SSHOC (https://sshopencloud.eu/) share a similar task: supporting researchers in the social sciences and humanities to integrate their work and results according to the FAIR principles. To this end, SSHOC and CO-OPERAS organised a joint workshop revolving around FAIR principles for research data in the SSH on the one hand and the development of the SSH Open Marketplace on the other. They asked participants to talk about their needs and experiences with the FAIR principles in their own research realities and then, not independently from this discussion, to give feedback about the conception of the SSHOC Open Marketplace. The idea of organizing a series of workshops in small local settings and in native languages - in this case in German - in order to anchor and align the FAIR principles with individual research practices was coming from the CO-OPERAS GO-FAIR Implementation Network. Already followed by a series of events in Italy (Turin), Portugal (Coimbra), and France (Marseilles), the concept has been proven in Göttingen as well: the uptake of the workshop was, with 28 participants from across the whole country, very good. The German language approach considerably lowered the threshold to give feedback and formulate own ideas. The first part of the workshop was dedicated to the FAIR principles following the concept and structure of the previous CO-OPERAS workshops. Like in the previous events, participants with different research background (history, art history, theology, political science, Romance studies, German studies, Japanese studies, archaeology, cultural anthropology, coptology, philosophy) discussed the following complexes of questions: What are the research data in your discipline and what role does research data management play for your academic work? How the FAIR principles are aligned with your data collection practices? How the FAIR principles are aligned with your data processing practices? How the FAIR principles are aligned with your data storage and publication practices?
