Most people like 3D visualizations. Whether it is in movies, holograms or games, 3D (literally) adds an extra dimension to conventional pictures. However, 3D data and their visualizations can also have scientic archaeological benets: they are crucial in removing relief distortions from photographs, facilitate the interpretation of an object or just support the aspiration to document archaeology as exhaustively as possible. Since archaeology is essentially a spatial discipline, the recording of the spatial data component is in most cases of the utmost importance to perform scientic archaeological research. For complex sites and precious artefacts, this can be a di€cult, time-consuming and very expensive operation. In this contribution, it is shown how a straightforward and cost-eective hard- and software combination is used to accurately document and inventory some of the cultural heritage of the Cres/Lošinj archipelago in three or four dimensions. First, standard photographs are acquired from the site or object under study. Secondly, the resulting image collection is processed with some recent advances in computer technology and so-called Structure from Motion (SfM) algorithms, which are known for their ability to reconstruct a sparse point cloud of scenes that were imaged by a series of overlapping photographs. When complemented by multi-view stereo matching algorithms, detailed 3D models can be built from such photo collections in a fully automated way. Moreover, the software packages implementing these tools are available for free or at very low-cost. Using a mixture of archaeological case studies, it will be shown that those computer vision applications produce excellent results from archaeological imagery with little eort needed. Besides serving the purpose of a pleasing 3D visualization for virtual display or publications, the 3D output additionally allows to extract accurate metric information about the archaeology under study (from single artefacts to entire landscapes).

This region is one of the few to have allowed human occupations during the dry Marine Isotope Stage 2 and is therefore key to understanding how human populations adapted to environmental changes at this time. This paper focuses on two sites located in Upper Egypt, excavated by the Combined Prehistoric Expedition: E71K18, attributed to the Afian industry and E71K20, attributed to the Silsilian industry. It aims to review the geomorphological and chronological evidence of the sites, present a technological analysis of the lithic assemblages in order to provide data that can be used in detailed comparative studies, which will allow discussion of technological variability in the Late Palaeolithic of the Nile Valley and its place within the regional context. The lithic analysis relies on the chaîne opératoire concept combined with an attribute analysis to allow quantification. This study (1) casts doubts on the chronology of E71K18 and related Afian industry, which could be older or younger than previously suggested, highlights (2) distinct technological characteristics for the Afian and the Silsilian, as well as (3) similar technological characteristics which allow to group them under a same broad techno-cultural complex, distinct from those north or south of the area. ispartof: PLOS ONE vol:12 issue:12 ispartof: location:United States status: published

The Database of the Southern Dutch Dialects (DSDD) aims to aggregate and standardise three existing comprehensive lexicographic dialect databases of the Flemish, Brabantic and Limburgian dialects into one integrated dataset (Van Keymeulen, et al., 2019; Van Hout, et al., 2018, De Vriend, et al., 2006). In 2016, the Research Foundation Flanders funded a medium-scale research infrastructure project, the Database of Southern Dutch Dialects (DSDD)[1], which ran from 2017 until 2020 and resulted in a harmonised dataset of concepts (Van den Heuvel, et al., 2016), a user-friendly search engine and a geo-visualisation tool. The application backend provides an Application Programming Interface (API) which will be further developed and made available to researchers to export subsets of the data for analysis using existing digital research tools. At the previous DH Benelux conferences the project team introduced the project (2017), explored the cartographic tools (2018) and demonstrated the prototype (2019). Following the launch of the DSDD platform in 2020, the team will now present the importance of the interdisciplinary approach, the final results of the project, as well as future directions beyond the project lifetime.

Heritage tourism represents a significant source of income for the European Union. Metals are vital to this, but corrode and degrade over time unless curative actions are taken. Conservators require non-destructive analysis techniques and specific instrumentations for the study and analysis of ancient objects that comprise our tangible cultural heritage. XEOM 1, a novel X-ray-excited optical microscopy system, is presented as a new addition to the conservator’s toolbox. XEOM 1 allows non-destructive chemical imaging of heritage metal surfaces (approximately top 200 nm) in air and controlled atmosphere. XEOM exploits the effect in which X-ray absorption results in the emission of electromagnetic radiation in the visible and near-visible bands, a phenomenon known as X-ray-excited optical luminescence (XEOL). The work presented in the thesis comprises ground work for imaging of copper and copper corrosion products on assessment samples of varying patination; a multimethod analysis of heritage artefacts retrieved from King Henry VIII's flagship: the 'Mary Rose' and the study for an alternative excitation source for use of XEOM 1 outside the synchrotron. The research and development of X-ray-excited optical microscopy was supplemented with the research regarding the copper corrosion of frameless coppr and copper- gold intrauterine devices (IUDs).

Ypres is considered a universal symbol of the destruction wrought by the First World War. By the time the Armistice was signed, little but rubble was left of this once wealthy Flemish trading city. Hundreds of thousands allied soldiers lost their lives in the battles of the Ypres Salient alone, provoking the allied leaders to claim the city as a monument for remembrance. Former residents, backed by the local government, rejected such claims and intended to rebuild the city. One of the leading institutions in the reconstruction programme were the tribunals and courts for war damages.

The paper will reflect on the collection and structure of this aggregated data set, that consists of titles of feature films screened for public viewing in cinemas in the cities Bari (Italy), Antwerp and Ghent (Belgium), Gothenburg (Sweden), Leicester (United Kingdom) and Rotterdam (Netherlands) for the year 1952. As comparisons of movie-going patterns between European countries are still rare, this paper offers a model for constructing a data set which can be replicated, scaled up and used to com-pare, contextualize, and eventually theorize practices of cinema-going across countries at a global level.
