Dark littoral submarine caves can act as enclaves of the deep aphotic zone in shallow coastal areas, and their survey has revealed the existence of a very particular fauna of specialized and poorly known organisms among which crustaceans are particularly well represented. In these particular habitats, the use of conventional sampling techniques, such as hand nets, is often not recommended since they disturb bottom sediments causing hazardous situations to scientific divers. The use of baited traps, while technically possible, is not. always practical is such remote habitats. The present work describes a simple and inexpensive manual device that can be operated by divers ill submarine caves and other cryptic habitats to recurrently catch small motile organisms such as mysid crustaceans, caridean shrimps, or even gobiid fishes. This small suction bottle derived and improved from the original "Sket bottle" design considerably reduces the risks of disturbing the cave's bottom sediment and can be easily operated using a single hand. The described sampling device can also be easily used outside caves, in a variety of particular habitats, e.g., rubble filled bottoms, branching coral reefs, cracks, and small holes on rocky surfaces, in which small motile organisms usually escape from traditional sampling gears, e.g., fishnets and traps, or simply go unnoticed by researchers during sampling. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

The principal capabilities of SPEAR will include the generation of artificial plasma irregularities, operation as an 'all-sky' HF radar, the excitation of ULF waves, and remote sounding of the magnetosphere. Operation of SPEAR in conjunction with the multitude of other instruments on Svalbard, including the EISCAT Svalbard radar, and the overlap of its extensive field-of-view with that of several of the HF radars in the SuperDARN network, will enable in-depth diagnosis of many geophysical and plasma phenomena associated with the cusp region and the substorm expansion phase. Moreover, its ability to produce artificial radar aurora will provide a means for the other instruments to undertake polar cap plasma physics experiments in a controlled manner. Another potential use of the facility is in 'field-line tagging' experiments, for coordinated ground-satellite experiments. Here the scientific objectives of SPEAR are detailed, along with the proposed technical specifications of the system.

Key words: Ionosphere (active experiments) – Radio science (instruments and techniques) – Space plasma physics (instruments and techniques)

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare entity adult patient with unfavourable outcome. This work describes the clinical and molecular specificities of adolescent and adult type of rhabdomyosarcoma and investigates the optimal integration of targetd therapy combinations on small cell sarcoma cell lines in vitro. We retrospectively analyzed 239 patients, 10 years of age and greater, diagonsed withrhabdomyosarcoma at MD Anderson Cancer Center from 1957 trough 2003 and their PAX-FOXO1 fusion gene status by fluorescence in situ hybridization on tissues microarray. Three samll cell sarcoma cell lines were exposed to targetd agent combinations. PAtient with metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma were found to have a 18 % survival rate at 5 years from diagnosis with an 12 %survival past 15 years. This outcome was even poorer for patients over 50 of age, even with localized disease. Younger patients were more likely to receive multidisciplinary therapy than their older counterparts. The presence of PAX-FOXO1 tranlocation was significantly associated with a higher frequency of metastatic disease. The four agents with the exception of abacavir synergized two by two with each other in vitro but the triple combinations did not perform beter than the bitherapies. The dual therapies vorinostat 5HDAC inhibitor) plus 17-DMAG (Hsp90 inhibitor) added with doxorubicin achvied better results than dual or triple therapies. Adult patient with rhabdomyosarcoma present similar molecular and clinical characteristics compared pediatric patients but outcome decrease with age partly du to a less multimodal management. Moreover targeted combinations should be integrated to chemotherapy backbone.

Many physical processes are involved in the Gulf of Lions hydrody- namics, Mediterranean Sea, exhibiting high spatial and temporal variability. Their generation is often linked to atmospheric conditions and in particular to wind forcing. This works aims at understanding this influence on small scale processes and investigates the relevance of high resolution atmospheric forcing for hydrodynamic modeling. Firstly, the impact of the local wind forcing on the generation of a mesoscale eddy, previously observed by HF radars, is evidenced. Several idealized configurations also allow to analyze the role of river discharge, background shelf circulation and bathymetric effects, through idealized numerical modeling. Then, different atmospheric models are assessed to drive hydrodynamic modeling in the Gulf of Lions, with distinctive resolutions. Iner- tial motions, internal oscillations and mesoscale variability are shown to be accentuated when using high-resolution forcing. The importance of wind spatial variability is also evidenced, in terms of upwelling system and shelf intrusions.

H. Gudmundsson; M. J. Raymond;G. H. Gudmundsson; M. J. Raymond; An optimal estimation method for simultaneously determining both basal slipperiness and basal topography from variations in surface flow velocity and topography along a flow line on ice streams and ice sheets is presented. We use Bayesian inference to update prior statistical estimates for basal topography and slipperiness using surface measurements along a flow line. Our main focus here is on how errors and spacing of surface data affect estimates of basal quantities and on possibly aliasing/mixing between basal slipperiness and basal topography. We find that the effects of spatial variations in basal topography and basal slipperiness on surface data can be accurately separated from each other, and mixing in retrieval does not pose a serious problem. For realistic surface data errors and density, small-amplitude perturbations in basal slipperiness can only be resolved for wavelengths larger than about 50 times the mean ice thickness. Bedrock topography is well resolved down to horizontal scale equal to about one ice thickness. Estimates of basal slipperiness are not significantly improved by accurate prior estimates of basal topography. However, retrieval of basal slipperiness is found to be highly sensitive to unmodelled errors in basal topography. The Cryosphere, 2 (2) ISSN:1994-0424 ISSN:1994-0416

Romantic fiction giving way to contemporary realities, international organizations attempt-because of the additional costs in global trade-to eradicate maritime piracy. While ocean is in principle a peaceful space, the proliferation of floating arsenals raises international law issues and concerns about regionalization of the sea and risk assessment. The privatization of sovereign missions to protect ships at sea becomes a lucrative trade to which France did not want or has not been able to resist. An Act of 1 July 2014 enshrines the «private enterprises for protecting vessels» as commercial companies whose object is to protect vessels flying the French flag against external threats, as well as the crew and goods on board. No international regulations regulate the activities of private security companies at sea. Of all the questions raised by the national system, such as the role of captain in hazardous areas, the agreement of the countries peacefully crossed or the risks related to the presence of a stock of weapons on board, only the internationalist approach will be adopted here. Indeed, the presence of armed private guards on vessels requires to analyse their activities in relation to two main issues: first, the control operated in risky areas in view of the threats incurred or the presence of weapons on board and secondly, the conditions of arrest and detention of pirates on board in light of fundamental rights or local law applicable close to the area of intervention.

Svergun; Birgitta Henriques-Normark; Adnane Achour;Streptococcus pneumoniaeis a major human pathogen, and a leading cause of disease and death worldwide. Pneumococcal invasive disease is triggered by initial asymptomatic colonization of the human upper respiratory tract. The pneumococcal serine-rich repeat protein (PsrP) is a lung-specific virulence factor whose functional binding region (BR) binds to keratin-10 (KRT10) and promotes pneumococcal biofilm formation through self-oligomerization. We present the crystal structure of the KRT10-binding domain of PsrP (BR187–385) determined to 2.0 Å resolution. BR187–385adopts a novel variant of the DEv-IgG fold, typical for microbial surface components recognizing adhesive matrix molecules adhesins, despite very low sequence identity. An extended β-sheet on one side of the compressed, two-sided barrel presents a basic groove that possibly binds to the acidic helical rod domain of KRT10. Our study also demonstrates the importance of the other side of the barrel, formed by extensive well-ordered loops and stabilized by short β-strands, for interaction with KRT10.

She covered in these papers different geographical areas, focusing mostly on plankton and on marine fisheries. During her stay at IEO she enjoyed scholarships in England and U.S.A. She later furthered in the latter country her professional career at such other prestigious research centres as Scripps Institution of Oceanography (1958-1969) and Southwest Research Center (1970-1987), both in California. Until her retirement in 1987 she directed her researches towards biological oceanography, becoming a worldwide expert in different groups of marine zooplankton, as regards both their taxonomic aspects and their application to fisheries. She described 22 new plankton species and had close to one hundred papers published in reputable Spanish, American and Latin American journals. She was also concerned with the history of Spanish scientific expeditions, on which she published a book in 2003. An analysis made on Thomson's-Wok platform shows the impact that this lady is having in international bibliography, with an average annual 8.8 citations in the analysed period (1964-2008). The overall recorded 387 citations (excluding self-citations) are distributed over different aspects regarding plankton predator species as they affect finfish eggs and larvae.

Ángeles Alvariño (1916–2005), who belonged to the second generation of Spanish female oceanographers, started out professionally as a researcher with the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO), Madrid, where she had her early papers published in the 1950s.
