description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Report 2023 Croatia EnglishPublisher:Zenodo Funded by:EC | PALOMERA, EC | OPERAS-PLUS, EC | OPERAS-PEC| PALOMERA ,EC| OPERAS-PLUS ,EC| OPERAS-PBłaszczyńska, Marta; Melinščak Zlodi, Iva; Morka, Agata; Proudman, Vanessa; Stone, Graham;Given the dynamic rate of change in the OA books business models landscape, the OPERAS Open Access Business Models Special Interest Group launched a survey in 2021 to 1) improve our understanding of the scholarly publishing landscape and of the challenges that publishers face in the context of publishing OA monographs; and 2) to identify main trends (including opportunities and challenges) and the knowledge of collaborative funding and infrastructure models in OA publishing in Social Science and the Humanities. This white paper updates and expands an earlier version published in 2021, which presented the preliminary analysis of the findings. Despite a small sample of presses meaning that no strong trends ought to be discussed, several insights were drawn and should be considered important directions for the future. Key findings in the report have been grouped into three main areas: collaboration, funding, and support. The report found that, although not opposed to the idea, a majority of presses do not engage in collaboration, specifically collaborative models for shared infrastructure, mainly due to the lack of knowledge and information, or perceived lack of need. This indicates that, for OA books, we are still at the early stage of the adoption curve for collaborative shared infrastructure. In terms of funding, most publishers perceive themselves to be somewhat sustainable. For institutional publishers, parent organisations are crucial as providers of financial or non-monetary support of OA. In addition, most publishers stress the need to have more resources and rely on more than one funding source, including grants and subsidies. The report found that awareness-raising and targeted support and training could be used to engage the presses but further incentivisation may be required to encourage publishers to collaborate more widely. We believe that the insights from this white paper may be interesting to a number of projects, such as DIAMAS, OPERAS-PLUS, and Palomera and have presented areas for further research and more specific actionable points for these projects.

Croatia has been participating in DARIAH since early preparatory phase by following and fostering its vision to enable excellent research in the arts and humanities, focusing not only on the local, but also on the regional and European perspectives. On the local level, main focus of the DARIAH-HR activities since 2014 has been the development of a cooperation between the scientific, GLAM and the IT sector, as well as the establishment of the cooperation between the Ministry of Science and Education and the Ministry of Culture on the planning and financing of national infrastructure for digital humanities. As a center of a DARIAH Western Balkan Hub, DARIAH-HR is also fostering cooperation in regional frameworks through different projects and organization of events. Finally, on the European level, DARIAH-HR efforts are focused on initiating the establishment of new working groups covering areas that are not sufficiently represented in DARIAH, such are WG on Ethics and Legality, WG Theatralia, and (likely) WG Art History and Technology through which we could plan more ambitious pan-European projects.

Research and development are facilitated by sharing knowledge bases, and the innovation process benefits from collaborative efforts that involve the collective utilization of data. Until now, most companies and organizations have produced and collected various types of data, and stored them in data silos that still have to be integrated with one another in order to enable knowledge creation. For this to happen, both public and private actors must adopt a flexible approach to achieve the necessary transition to break data silos and create collaborative data sharing between data producers and users. In this paper, we investigate several factors influencing cooperative data usage and explore the challenges posed by the participation in cross-organizational data ecosystems by performing an interview study among stakeholders from private and public organizations in the context of the project IDE@S, which aims at fostering the cooperation in data science in the Austrian federal state of Styria. We highlight technological and organizational requirements of data infrastructure, expertise, and practises towards collaborative data usage.

There is still a critical debate going on about what DH is and whether we can talk about a new discipline at all, or it is just about a collaboration of two different fields - humanities and computing. Keeping out of these discussions, scientists and experts from different fields joined their efforts in the development and exploitation of the benefits of IT trends and new technological opportunities to advance humanities research and education. The idea of creating a pan-European digital research infrastructure for digital arts and humanities, aiming to ensure long-term accessibility and access to cultural and scientific information along with the support to researchers at all stages of the research process, officially began in 2006. DARIAH was included that year in the first Roadmap of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI), and since 2014 has been established as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC). Guided by the principle “by researchers for researchers”, scientists themselves lead and supervise the development of their digital research environment. Today, DARIAH is the network of people, expertise, information, knowledge, content, methods, tools and technologies from its member countries with the mission to enhance and support digitally-enabled research and teaching across the arts and humanities. Croatia is one of the founding members and has been included in its development since the early preparatory phase (2007). The Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research in its role as a coordinating institution (since 2013) has under- taken many important activities. Among other things, it has positioned Croatia as a regional hub (DARIAH Western Balkan Hub) and the contact point for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Montenegro, so today it is fostering cooperation in regional framework through different projects and organization of events.

The CFW is a tool that enables digital humanities scholars as well as the wider research infrastructure community to quickly and easily obtain standardized consent forms that conform to the obligations and regulations of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). By answering a series of simple questions, scholars do not only learn about data privacy requirements, but are also provided with consent forms for their immediate use. The CFW supports you in collecting the consent of data subjects in three scenarios: gathering data from and/or about living people for research purposes ; communicating through mailing lists or other (digital) communication media ; collecting data and/or consent from participants as the host of an academic event.

This idea, at the heart of the Open Science movement, encompasses not only the idea of enabling democratic access to research results, but also a careful, responsible and transparent handling of the research process and the research objects themselves, especially when these objects are actually subjects (i.e. people). The ELDAH Consent Wizard project, co-funded through the DARIAH-EU Working Group funding scheme and the Austrian national CLARIAH-AT funding scheme, set out to develop a “consent form wizard” which enables digital scholars and the wider research infrastructure community to quickly and easily obtain a standardized, GDPR-compliant consent form that is legally valid in all of the European Union, and also sets a best practice for transparency and ethical conduct towards research (and hence data) subjects. Depending on the context for which consent is obtained (e.g. use of images of people, processing of information shared in surveys, collection/processing of personal data), wizard users receive a consent form tailored to their specific needs after answering a series of questions.
