For Anglican travellers in Italy, Rome had an ambiguous status. It was the seat both of high culture and of ‘superstitious’ Roman Catholic practices, including art and architecture. These extremes culminated in church buildings. This article studies the perception and reaction of English travellers in Rome towards architecture of the Roman Catholic Church and its influence on English church architecture. It will reveal the church building as an aesthetic object, in addition to possessing religious qualities, through the analysis of printed travelogues and engravings that circulated amongst the English Grand Tour travellers. By analysing the travelogue discourse — with particular attention to descriptions of specific church buildings and any intentional omissions in these descriptions — and examining the relationship between these discourses and contemporary English aesthetic theories, I will demonstrate how a certain appreciation for Roman Baroque church architecture was made acceptable and could even inspire the design of English church architecture. As will become clear, the process of travel included the separation of moral and artistic values in aesthetic appreciation. This separation made the cultural transfer between Italy and England possible in the 17th and early 18th centuries. ispartof: Architectural Histories vol:4 issue:1 pages:1-13 status: published

This is an infinite potential well defined on the positive half-axis. Each of the fundamental solutions for this conditionally integrable potential is written as an irreducible linear combination of two Hermite functions of a shifted and scaled argument. We present the general solution of the problem, derive the exact energy spectrum equation and construct a highly accurate approximation for the bound-state energy levels.

Today, it is a reliable joining technique used in automotive, HVAC and general steel constructions whilst still gaining interest. As it is not computationally feasible to include detailed sub models of these type of joints in FE simulations of real-life clinched assemblies, this paper proposes a methodology to represent these connections with simplified elements. In order to calibrate the parameters governing the equivalent model, a simple shear lap and pullout test is used. This methodology is applied to clinched configurations and validated using a modified Arcan test in which both shear and pull-out loads are considered. ispartof: Journal of Physics: Conference Series ispartof: NUMISHEET 2016: 10th International Conference and Workshop on Numerical Simulation of 3D Sheet Metal Forming Processes vol:734 issue:3 ispartof: Numisheet location:Bristol date:4 Sep - 9 Sep 2016 status: published

Their meaning has also considerably broadened to the extent that it is sometimes difficult to grasp their true sense. This causes one to forget that politics — and indeed the term “political” — had a specific meaning for Tudor political theorists: the Word “political” was closely associated to the definition of sovereignty. On the Elizabethan stage, the picture was quite different. Politicians were first and foremost opposed to the figure of the Christian king, they were often turned into scapegoats and caricatured. Gradually, however, the image of sovereignty changed, strong oppositions disappeared, as the sovereign became himself a “politician” and sought to withdraw his private person behind the official image of sacred kingship. Shakespeare's histores and tragedies reflect the presence of these absolutist tendencies but do not seem to allow them to become fully realized on stage. The theatre is prone to dissolve the abstract ideals of political theory and to question the aspirations of sovereigns.

Art and the State at the beginning of the Third Republic or, On the conditions for the impossibility of policy formation. There were major obstacles to achieving a policy on the arts at the beginning of the Third Republic: the hostility of the artists themselves, the unstable position of politicians and civil servants, and the lack of clear-cut administrative organization. In a process in which each of these three elements was both the cause and effect of the other two, the hesitation of government agents and institutional instability laid the foundation for what had produced them: the representation of an irreconcilable antagonism between art and the state built by artists. Much social activism went on in the Victorian period, and quite a few social reformers were women. These female social reformers were even fictionalized and satirized, as Mrs Jellyby in Bleak House (1854), Dickens’s obsessive philanthropist who focuses so much on Africa that she forgets to look after her house, children and husband. Florence Nightingale was one of these activists. The nurse who became famous for her involvement in the Crimean War was a highly significant Victorian public figu...

International audience; Fictive motion (e.g. ‘The highway runs along the coast’) is a pervasive phenomenon in language that can imply both a staticand a moving observer. In a corpus of alpine narratives, it is used in three types of spatial descriptions: conveying the actual motion of the observer, describing a vista and communicating encyclopaedic spatial knowledge. This study takes a knowledge-based approach to develop rules for automated extraction and classification of these types based on an annotated corpus of fictive motion instances. In particular, we identify the differences in the set of concepts involved into the production of the three types of descriptions, followed by their linguistic operationalization. Based on that, we build a set of rules that classify fictive motion with an overall precision of 0.87 and recall of 0.71. The article highlights the importance of examining spatially rich, naturally occurring corpora for the lines of work dealing with the automated interpretation of spatial information in texts, as well as, more broadly, investigation of spatial language involved into various types of spatial discourse.

While it is well accepted that Bantu languages spread from their homeland (Cameroon/Nigeria) approximately 5000 years ago (ya), there is no consensus about the timing and geographical routes underlying this expansion. Two main models of Bantu expansion have been suggested: The 'early-split' model claims that the most recent ancestor of Eastern languages expanded north of the rainforest towards the Great Lakes region approximately 4000 ya, while the 'late-split' model proposes that Eastern languages diversified from Western languages south of the rainforest approximately 2000 ya. Furthermore, it is unclear whether the language dispersal was coupled with the movement of people, raising the question of language shift versus demic diffusion. We use a novel approach taking into account both the spatial and temporal predictions of the two models and formally test these predictions with linguistic and genetic data. Our results show evidence for a demic diffusion in the genetic data, which is confirmed by the correlations between genetic and linguistic distances. While there is little support for the early-split model, the late-split model shows a relatively good fit to the data. Our analyses demonstrate that subsequent contact among languages/populations strongly affected the signal of the initial migration via isolation by distance. International audience

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2016 BelgiumPublisher:Open Library of the Humanities Authors: Morel, Anne-Francoise;Morel, Anne-Francoise;doi: 10.5334/ah.75
