Instead of the instability of the normal state with respect to the onset of pairing described by the Gorkov equation, a new equation is obtained which describes the onset of quartetting. Within a model calculation for symmetric nuclear matter, we find that below a critical density, the four-particle condensation (alpha-like quartetting) is favored over deuteron condensation (triplet pairing). This pairing-quartetting competition is expected to be a general feature of interacting fermion systems, such as the excition-biexciton system in excited semiconductors. Estuarine waters at the interface of marine and freshwater bodies are among the most volatile ecosystems, particularly for aquatic species, and will be strongly influenced by the temperature with extreme flooding events. This study aimed to quantify the acclimation capacity of coastal fish species to estuarine plume modifications. The thicklip mullet (Chelon labrosus) and European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were selected as representative species of estuarine ecological guilds. These fish were subjected to an experiment mimicking a brief freshwater intrusion (35–5). These experiments were conducted at two different temperatures that these two species would encounter during their incursion from the sea through estuarine waters to freshwater habitats. The experimental results confirmed the high capacity for acclimation of both species to changes in salinity and temperature. Interspecific differences were observed. For example, the salinity has a greater effect on the metabolism of the seabass than on that of the mullets. Meanwhile, the temperature has a greater effect on the mullets. These differences in metabolic responses to fluctuating salinities and temperatures may modify the use of estuarine waters by these species and should be considered when predicting future specific distribution areas in the context of global change

Intangibility of services and service-orientation fosters creation of flexible solutions by innovating business models, service processes and service products. Capabilities are perceived as measuring indicator of service orientation in enterprises and one requirement for business model innovation. This paper investigates how design of capabilities can help enterprises to offer novel services. To do so, we analyze the degree of innovation before and after applying the capability-driven development (CDD), which is a methodological and technological enterprise modelling approach. Based on observations from two industrial cases affected from the main forces that disturb the business terrain, the paper concludes that CDD helps enterprises to innovate their digital services by causing changes mainly on business model and service process levels.

In general, precious metal-based catalysts are employed for this effective transformation. In recent years, the use of earth abundant and cheap non-noble metal catalysts for this process attracted considerable attention in the scientific community. Here we show that the selective N-alkylation of amines with alcohols can be catalysed by defined PNP manganese pincer complexes. A variety of substituted anilines are monoalkylated with different (hetero)aromatic and aliphatic alcohols even in the presence of other sensitive reducible functional groups. As a special highlight, we report the chemoselective monomethylation of primary amines using methanol under mild conditions. Hydrogen borrowing is an attractive method for C-N bond formation - avoiding multiple alkylation products and reducing waste - but often is carried out with noble metals. Here the authors show that a manganese catalyst allows the selective N-alkylation of amines with alcohols.

AbstractStatistical profiling algorithms claiming to predict which jobseekers are at risk of becoming long‐term unemployed are spread unevenly across countries. However, the pathways and histories of these tools are understudied. Because the profiling path in France is a winding one, it is fruitful to study the production of profiling acceptability within the Public Employment Service (PES), and upstream of its reception by frontline advisers. Using a mix of interviews and written sources, we show that the production of profiling acceptability sits at the crossroads of two processes: technical and political transformations of the instrument itself and broader institutional and managerial transformations of the PES. On the basis of this case study, the paper enriches our understanding of the slow and incremental rationalization of public services that we have termed “professional rationalization.” We argue that, far from being a softened or moderated form of bureaucratic rationalization, it is powerful—perhaps even irreversible—precisely because it transforms its target (frontline advisers) before the rationalization instrument is even deployed.

Cet article se propose d’analyser les travaux de Pierre Deffontaines sur la montagne et la forêt faisant la part belle aux petites paysanneries méditerranéennes, les présentant sous un jour nouveau. Géographe de terrain, il eut l’occasion de parcourir longuement les montagnes méditerranéennes et d’en étudier les populations rurales. Outre ce goût personnel, cette petite paysannerie a une place importante dans sa conception de la géographie, elle forme le front de la colonisation et permet d’éclairer un concept clé de sa géographie : les petites gens. Cet article traite cet aspect parfois méconnu des productions de Deffontaines où l’étude de ces populations et des formes agropastorales qui leur sont liées est d’une grande importance. Ceci questionne à la fois la façon dont Deffontaines pense la petite paysannerie dans une perspective historique, géographique et ethnographique. Mais aussi la place accordée à cet auteur dans le cadre de la géographie française de l’époque classique dans une logique d’étude historique et épistémologique. Pierre Deffontaines en 1948 développe une géographie de la transparence laissant peu de place aux problématiques. L’exemple méditerranéen est particulièrement marquant dans son œuvre du fait qu’il soutient la thèse d’une fonction pionnière des Méditerranées dans le peuplement et la prise de contrôle de la terre par les humains. L’origine du monde est alors à ses yeux en partie dans les arrière-pays montagneux et forestiers méditerranéens. This article aims to analyse Pierre Deffontaines' work on mountains and forests, focusing on small Mediterranean farmers, presenting them in a new light. As a field geographer, he had the opportunity to travel extensively through the Mediterranean mountains and study their rural populations. In addition to this personal taste, this small peasantry has an important place in his conception of geography, it forms the front of colonization ; it makes it possible to clarify a key concept of his geography : the small people (petites gens). This article deals with some unknown aspect of Deffontaines' productions where the study of these populations and the agropastoral forms associated with them is of great importance. This questions both the way Deffontaines thinks small farmers from a historical, geographical and ethnographic perspective. But also the place given to this author in the context of French geography of the classical period in a logic of historical and epistemological study. Pierre Deffontaines in 1948 developed a geography of transparency that left little room for problems. The Mediterranean example is particularly striking in his work because it supports the thesis of a pioneering function of the Mediterranean in the settlement and control of the land by humans. In his opinion, the origin of the world is then partly in the mountainous hinterlands and Mediterranean woodlands.

As technical solutions to this conflict are limited and difficult to implement, this study aimed to identify fishing practices that could reduce odontocete depredation, with a focus on killer whales (Orcinus orca) interacting with Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) longliners off the Crozet islands. Data collected by fishery observers from 6013 longline sets between 2003 and 2013 allowed us to statistically detect the significant influence of five operational variables using GLMMs. The probability of interactions between vessels and killer whales was decreased by (i) the number of vessels operating simultaneously in the area: the limited number of depredating killer whales may induce a dilution effect with increased fleet size, and (ii) depth of longline sets: vessels operating in shallow waters may be more accessible to whales that are initially distributed on peri-insular shelves. The cpue was negatively influenced by (iii) length of longlines: longer sets may provide killer whales access to a greater proportion of hooked fish per set, and positively influenced by (iv) hauling speed: increased speed may shorten the time during which toothfish are accessible to whales during hauling. The time it takes for killer whales to reach vessels was positively correlated to (v) the distance travelled between longline sets with an estimated threshold of 100 km beyond which whales seem to temporarily lose track of vessels. These findings provide insightful guidelines about what fishing strategy to adopt given these variables to reduce killer whale depredation here and in similar situations elsewhere. To a greater extent, this study is illustrative of how collaborative work with fishermen in a fully controlled fishery framework may lead to the definition of cost-limited and easy-to-implement mitigation solutions when facing such human-wildlife conflict.

In spite of extensive studies, the complexity of hydrogen diffusion in solids remains a phenomenon that needs to be clarified. In this paper, we investigate the anisotropy of hydrogen diffusion in pure nickel single crystals using both an experimental approach and a thermodynamic development. As a first approximation, experimental data from electrochemical permeation and thermal desorption spectroscopy are described using the classical Fick’s laws and an apparent diffusion tensor. Within a thermodynamic framework, the diffusion equation can be derived from Fick’s laws with an apparent diffusion coefficient which contains an added solute content dependent term β. This term is due to the elastic strain field associated with the insertion of solute atoms. For nickel crystals, the dependence of β on the crystallographic orientation arises from the elastic anisotropy. Additionally, our results elucidate the discrepancies between the thermodynamic model and experimental observations of the effect of the solute concentration on the diffusion process. Moreover, this highlights the importance of the impact of hydrogen on vacancy formation and the subsequent consequences on the anisotropy of the apparent diffusion coefficient.

Most smartphones and mobile operating systems provide applications which are able to sense and gather several data from the environment of the device. Thanks to this collected data, it is possible to combine information from several probes. A very common use case is the collection of network scans with location to help the localisation feature of these devices. Nevertheless, most users are not aware of this spying. The collected data might represent infringements of privacy. One possible solution to keep gathering these data while maintaining privacy would consist in device-to-device communications in order to break the links between data and users. In this article we propose an approach to test the feasibility of such a system. We collected data from mobile users to combine location and network scans data. With this data, we test the accuracy level we can reach while using Wi-Fi localisation. We analyse how a new measure should be pushed and how many scans should be realised to provide location-based Wi-Fi. We analyse the minimal dataset to cover the set of locations covered by users and prove that a multiuser gathering system can benefit the users.

We assembled 40 experts to identify key questions in this field, focussing on marine megafauna, which include a broad range of birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish. Research on these taxa has both underpinned many of the recent technical developments and led to fundamental discoveries in the field. We show that the questions have broad applicability to other taxa, including terrestrial animals, flying insects, and swimming invertebrates, and, as such, this exercise provides a useful roadmap for targeted deployments and data syntheses that should advance the field of movement ecology. Instead of the instability of the normal state with respect to the onset of pairing described by the Gorkov equation, a new equation is obtained which describes the onset of quartetting. Within a model calculation for symmetric nuclear matter, we find that below a critical density, the four-particle condensation (alpha-like quartetting) is favored over deuteron condensation (triplet pairing). This pairing-quartetting competition is expected to be a general feature of interacting fermion systems, such as the excition-biexciton system in excited semiconductors. Estuarine waters at the interface of marine and freshwater bodies are among the most volatile ecosystems, particularly for aquatic species, and will be strongly influenced by the temperature with extreme flooding events. This study aimed to quantify the acclimation capacity of coastal fish species to estuarine plume modifications. The thicklip mullet (Chelon labrosus) and European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were selected as representative species of estuarine ecological guilds. These fish were subjected to an experiment mimicking a brief freshwater intrusion (35–5). These experiments were conducted at two different temperatures that these two species would encounter during their incursion from the sea through estuarine waters to freshwater habitats. The experimental results confirmed the high capacity for acclimation of both species to changes in salinity and temperature. Interspecific differences were observed. For example, the salinity has a greater effect on the metabolism of the seabass than on that of the mullets. Meanwhile, the temperature has a greater effect on the mullets. These differences in metabolic responses to fluctuating salinities and temperatures may modify the use of estuarine waters by these species and should be considered when predicting future specific distribution areas in the context of global change

Intangibility of services and service-orientation fosters creation of flexible solutions by innovating business models, service processes and service products. Capabilities are perceived as measuring indicator of service orientation in enterprises and one requirement for business model innovation. This paper investigates how design of capabilities can help enterprises to offer novel services. To do so, we analyze the degree of innovation before and after applying the capability-driven development (CDD), which is a methodological and technological enterprise modelling approach. Based on observations from two industrial cases affected from the main forces that disturb the business terrain, the paper concludes that CDD helps enterprises to innovate their digital services by causing changes mainly on business model and service process levels.

In general, precious metal-based catalysts are employed for this effective transformation. In recent years, the use of earth abundant and cheap non-noble metal catalysts for this process attracted considerable attention in the scientific community. Here we show that the selective N-alkylation of amines with alcohols can be catalysed by defined PNP manganese pincer complexes. A variety of substituted anilines are monoalkylated with different (hetero)aromatic and aliphatic alcohols even in the presence of other sensitive reducible functional groups. As a special highlight, we report the chemoselective monomethylation of primary amines using methanol under mild conditions. Hydrogen borrowing is an attractive method for C-N bond formation - avoiding multiple alkylation products and reducing waste - but often is carried out with noble metals. Here the authors show that a manganese catalyst allows the selective N-alkylation of amines with alcohols.

AbstractStatistical profiling algorithms claiming to predict which jobseekers are at risk of becoming long‐term unemployed are spread unevenly across countries. However, the pathways and histories of these tools are understudied. Because the profiling path in France is a winding one, it is fruitful to study the production of profiling acceptability within the Public Employment Service (PES), and upstream of its reception by frontline advisers. Using a mix of interviews and written sources, we show that the production of profiling acceptability sits at the crossroads of two processes: technical and political transformations of the instrument itself and broader institutional and managerial transformations of the PES. On the basis of this case study, the paper enriches our understanding of the slow and incremental rationalization of public services that we have termed “professional rationalization.” We argue that, far from being a softened or moderated form of bureaucratic rationalization, it is powerful—perhaps even irreversible—precisely because it transforms its target (frontline advisers) before the rationalization instrument is even deployed.

Outre ce goût personnel, cette petite paysannerie a une place importante dans sa conception de la géographie, elle forme le front de la colonisation et permet d’éclairer un concept clé de sa géographie : les petites gens. Cet article traite cet aspect parfois méconnu des productions de Deffontaines où l’étude de ces populations et des formes agropastorales qui leur sont liées est d’une grande importance. Ceci questionne à la fois la façon dont Deffontaines pense la petite paysannerie dans une perspective historique, géographique et ethnographique. Mais aussi la place accordée à cet auteur dans le cadre de la géographie française de l’époque classique dans une logique d’étude historique et épistémologique. Pierre Deffontaines en 1948 développe une géographie de la transparence laissant peu de place aux problématiques. L’exemple méditerranéen est particulièrement marquant dans son œuvre du fait qu’il soutient la thèse d’une fonction pionnière des Méditerranées dans le peuplement et la prise de contrôle de la terre par les humains. L’origine du monde est alors à ses yeux en partie dans les arrière-pays montagneux et forestiers méditerranéens. This article aims to analyse Pierre Deffontaines' work on mountains and forests, focusing on small Mediterranean farmers, presenting them in a new light. As a field geographer, he had the opportunity to travel extensively through the Mediterranean mountains and study their rural populations. In addition to this personal taste, this small peasantry has an important place in his conception of geography, it forms the front of colonization ; it makes it possible to clarify a key concept of his geography : the small people (petites gens). This article deals with some unknown aspect of Deffontaines' productions where the study of these populations and the agropastoral forms associated with them is of great importance. This questions both the way Deffontaines thinks small farmers from a historical, geographical and ethnographic perspective. But also the place given to this author in the context of French geography of the classical period in a logic of historical and epistemological study. Pierre Deffontaines in 1948 developed a geography of transparency that left little room for problems. The Mediterranean example is particularly striking in his work because it supports the thesis of a pioneering function of the Mediterranean in the settlement and control of the land by humans. In his opinion, the origin of the world is then partly in the mountainous hinterlands and Mediterranean woodlands.

As technical solutions to this conflict are limited and difficult to implement, this study aimed to identify fishing practices that could reduce odontocete depredation, with a focus on killer whales (Orcinus orca) interacting with Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) longliners off the Crozet islands. Data collected by fishery observers from 6013 longline sets between 2003 and 2013 allowed us to statistically detect the significant influence of five operational variables using GLMMs. The probability of interactions between vessels and killer whales was decreased by (i) the number of vessels operating simultaneously in the area: the limited number of depredating killer whales may induce a dilution effect with increased fleet size, and (ii) depth of longline sets: vessels operating in shallow waters may be more accessible to whales that are initially distributed on peri-insular shelves. The cpue was negatively influenced by (iii) length of longlines: longer sets may provide killer whales access to a greater proportion of hooked fish per set, and positively influenced by (iv) hauling speed: increased speed may shorten the time during which toothfish are accessible to whales during hauling. The time it takes for killer whales to reach vessels was positively correlated to (v) the distance travelled between longline sets with an estimated threshold of 100 km beyond which whales seem to temporarily lose track of vessels. These findings provide insightful guidelines about what fishing strategy to adopt given these variables to reduce killer whale depredation here and in similar situations elsewhere. To a greater extent, this study is illustrative of how collaborative work with fishermen in a fully controlled fishery framework may lead to the definition of cost-limited and easy-to-implement mitigation solutions when facing such human-wildlife conflict.

In spite of extensive studies, the complexity of hydrogen diffusion in solids remains a phenomenon that needs to be clarified. In this paper, we investigate the anisotropy of hydrogen diffusion in pure nickel single crystals using both an experimental approach and a thermodynamic development. As a first approximation, experimental data from electrochemical permeation and thermal desorption spectroscopy are described using the classical Fick’s laws and an apparent diffusion tensor. Within a thermodynamic framework, the diffusion equation can be derived from Fick’s laws with an apparent diffusion coefficient which contains an added solute content dependent term β. This term is due to the elastic strain field associated with the insertion of solute atoms. For nickel crystals, the dependence of β on the crystallographic orientation arises from the elastic anisotropy. Additionally, our results elucidate the discrepancies between the thermodynamic model and experimental observations of the effect of the solute concentration on the diffusion process. Moreover, this highlights the importance of the impact of hydrogen on vacancy formation and the subsequent consequences on the anisotropy of the apparent diffusion coefficient.

Most smartphones and mobile operating systems provide applications which are able to sense and gather several data from the environment of the device. Thanks to this collected data, it is possible to combine information from several probes. A very common use case is the collection of network scans with location to help the localisation feature of these devices. Nevertheless, most users are not aware of this spying. The collected data might represent infringements of privacy. One possible solution to keep gathering these data while maintaining privacy would consist in device-to-device communications in order to break the links between data and users. In this article we propose an approach to test the feasibility of such a system. We collected data from mobile users to combine location and network scans data. With this data, we test the accuracy level we can reach while using Wi-Fi localisation. We analyse how a new measure should be pushed and how many scans should be realised to provide location-based Wi-Fi. We analyse the minimal dataset to cover the set of locations covered by users and prove that a multiuser gathering system can benefit the users.

We assembled 40 experts to identify key questions in this field, focussing on marine megafauna, which include a broad range of birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish. Research on these taxa has both underpinned many of the recent technical developments and led to fundamental discoveries in the field. We show that the questions have broad applicability to other taxa, including terrestrial animals, flying insects, and swimming invertebrates, and, as such, this exercise provides a useful roadmap for targeted deployments and data syntheses that should advance the field of movement ecology.
