These objects are modeled by developable surfaces and are mathematically wellunderstood. They are difcult to minimally parameterize since the number of meaningful parameters is intrinsically dependent on the actual surface. We propose a quasi-minimal model which self-adapts its set of parameters to the actual surface. More precisly, a varying number of rules is used jointly with smoothness constraints to bend a at mesh, generating the sought-after surface. We propose an algorithm for tting this model to multiple images by minimizing the point-based reprojection error. Experimental results are reported, showing that our model ts real images accurately.

Do these frequency bands serve as a neural marker of linguistic prediction as well? We hypothesized that if pre-stimulus alpha and beta oscillations index language predictions, their power should monotonically relate to the degree of predictability of incoming words based on past context. We expected that the more predictable the last word of a sentence, the stronger the alpha and beta power modulation. To test this, we measured neural responses with magnetoencephalography of healthy individuals during exposure to a set of linguistically matched sentences featuring three levels of sentence context constraint (high, medium and low constraint). We observed fluctuations in alpha and beta power before last word onset, and modulations in M400 amplitude after last word onset. The M400 amplitude was monotonically related to the degree of context constraint, with a high constraining context resulting in the strongest amplitude decrease. In contrast, pre-stimulus alpha and beta power decreased more strongly for intermediate constraints, followed by high and low constraints. Therefore, unlike the M400, pre-stimulus alpha and beta dynamics were not indexing the degree of word predictability from sentence context. The two users, have the option to transmit at a higher rate (measured in bits/slot) separately, or to transmit simultaneously but at a lower rate because of the interference caused by concurrent transmissions. Source burstiness is considered by modeling random arrivals at the users, and the stability region in terms of bits/slot is derived. Further, we determine the condition under which the maximum stability region is achieved when both users transmit with probability 1 if they are backlogged; in this case, the stability region is shown to be coordinate convex. Then, under such condition for a convex stability region, we study the minimum delivery time problem where each user is given at the beginning some amount of data for the destination. For any initial queue size vector, we explicitly characterize the optimal rate allocation policy that empties the two users' queues within the shortest time.

Sediments produced by a slope failure of the toe of a landslide are assumed to prevent the spread of the failure. Thus, sediment removal is an emergency measure that must be done safely while the slope is observed. Observation must also be done safely without requiring workers to enter the failed slope to avoid secondary disasters. Generally, a non-prism type totalstation is useful to measure ground displacement under such circumstances, because this type of totalstation can be used without placing targets on the slope. However, the lack of prisms results in problems related to the objectivity of measurement data, collimation error of the totalstation, measurement at night, and so on. The authors have developed targets and a remote target placing method in order to resolve the above problems. As a result, we have established remote measurement technique for ground displacement on failed slopes at the toes of landslides. This paper describes the measurement technique that has been developed.

Absorption and metabolism of quercetin and isoquercitrin (quercetin 3-O-glucose) were investigated in rats after in situ perfusion of jejunum plus ileum (15 nmol/min) for 30 min and compared with those of phloretin and phloridzin (phloretin 2'-O-glucose). After perfusion of the glucosides, the corresponding aglycone forms and conjugated derivatives appeared in the lumen. The conjugated metabolites were similar to those recovered after intestinal perfusion of the aglycone forms. Regardless of the aglycone or glucoside perfused, only conjugated forms were present in the mesenteric vein blood draining the perfused segment showing the importance of intestinal conjugation. The hydrolysis of glucosides was a prerequisite step before their conjugation by intestinal enzymes and their transport towards the mucosal and serosal sides. In contrast to phloridzin, lactase phloridzin hydrolase activity did not seem to be an essential pathway for isoquercitrin hydrolysis. The 3-O-glucosylation of quercetin improved the net absorption of the aglycone (P < 0.05), whereas phloretin absorption decreased when present as 2'-O-glucoside (P < 0.05). Whatever the perfused compound, the efficiency of the absorption seemed to be linked to the intestinal conjugation process and to the luminal secretion of metabolites.

We have applied to these images an iterative multi-scale wavelet analysis and reconstruction technique, which allows to subtract stars and galaxies from the original images. We detect a zone of diffuse emission south west of the cluster center (DS1), and a second faint object (ComDif), within DS1. Another diffuse source (DS2) may be detected, at lower confidence level, north east of the center. These sources of diffuse light contribute to 10-15% of the total visible light in the cluster. Whether they are independent entities or are part of the very elliptical external envelope of the central galaxy remains unclear. VLT VIMOS integral field spectroscopy reveals a faint continuum at the positions of DS1 and ComDif but do not allow to compute a redshift. A hierarchical substructure detection method reveals the presence of several galaxy pairs and groups defining a similar direction as the one drawn by the DS1-central galaxy-DS2 axis. The analysis of archive XMM-Newton and Chandra observations shows X-ray emission elongated in the same direction. The X-ray temperature map shows the presence of a cool core, a broad cool zone stretching from north to south and hotter regions towards the north east, south west and north west. This possibly suggests shock fronts along these directions produced by infalling material. These various data are consistent with a picture in which diffuse sources are concentrations of tidal debris and harassed matter expelled from infalling galaxies by tidal stripping and undergoing an accretion process onto the central cluster galaxy; as such, they are expected to be found along the main infall directions. Roughly speaking this means that a membrane can be seen as the limit of rackets made of strings. For practical applications, we also show that the solutions of the discrete approximated problems (again on the one-dimensional networks) also converge to the solution of the two-dimensional Dirichlet problem.

In this model, regional convergence depends on policy treatment and regional economic structure, proxied by investment per capita and the demographic growth rate. The main originality of the model is its specification, dealing with temporal and spatial issues at the same time. Econometric estimations rely on a dataset of 143 EU14-NUTS1/NUTS2 regions observed over more than 25 years (from 1980 to 2005). Generalized Method of Moment estimation enables us to obtain consistent estimates of the beta-parameter along with estimates of the impact of regional policies and regional economic structure on regional growth. Our results suggest that Objective 1 programmes have a direct effect on regional GDP p.c. growth rates, whereas total structural funds do not. We interpret this result as an Objective 1 programme added-value, compared to total structural funds. However, these results do not mean that the non-Objective 1 structural funds have no impact on overall growth in the EU (e.g. through a technology diffusion effect) but they do not allow additional growth specifically in these regions, when we consider the spatial dependences. Moreover, consideration of the spatial dimension of the panel brings to light a still significant, but less important, impact of structural funds on convergence.
