description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Other literature type 2021 FrancePublisher:Elsevier BV Funded by:EC | JERICO-NEXTEC| JERICO-NEXTNicolas Dubosq; Sabine Schmidt; John P. Walsh; Antoine Grémare; Hervé Gillet; Pascal Lebleu; Dominique Poirier; Marie-Claire Perello; Bastien Lamarque; Bruno Deflandre;International audience; On the Bay of Biscay continental shelf, there are several mid-shelf mud patches including La Grande Vasière to the north, the West Gironde Mud Patch (WGMP) off the Gironde estuary and the Basque Mud Patch close to the Spanish border. In general, these deposits are several meters thick and cover coarser substrate. Questions remain about their storage capability for fine particles and carbon. This work investigates the sedimentation of the WGMP in order to develop a first estimate of organic carbon (OC) burial. Interface sediment cores were collected at nine stations along two cross-shelf transects in October-November 2016. X-radiograph imaging and grain-size analyses were used to characterize sedimentary structures. 210 Pb xs depth profiles were established to calculate sediment (SAR) and mass (MAR) accumulation rates. Sedimentary structures indicate episodic sandy inputs overlying older deposits at proximal sites, and relatively continuous sedimentation at seaward locations. On the outer-central portion of the northern transect, a maximum SAR (0.47 cm yr − 1) was observed, suggesting a depocenter. On the southern transect, excluding two stations where sedimentary inputs appear massive but sporadic, the SARs are lower (<0.3 cm yr − 1). Quantitative estimates of OC burial rates increase seaward with a maximum of 45 gC m − 2 yr − 1. To evaluate carbon loading independent of grain-size variability, OC values were normalized to surface area of sediments (SA). Interestingly, a qualitative comparison of OC burial efficiencies using the OC/SA ratio highlights three groups of sites (low, medium and relatively high OC burial efficiency) which are likely related both to different sedimentary environments and variable deposition conditions linked to local environmental conditions and depth. This work highlights the likely control of hydrodynamic intensity and sedimentary inputs on the amount of OC stored in the WGMP sediments.

Valenzuela; Bertrand Devouard; Jean-Pierre Lorand; César Arriagada; Pierre Rochette; Claudio Latorre; Pierre Beck;International audience; We describe extended occurrences of unusual silicate glass surface layers from the Atacama Desert (Chile). These glasses, found near the town of Pica at four localities separated by up to 70 km, are neither fulgurites, nor volcanic glasses, nor metallurgical slags related to anthropic activity, but show close similarities to other glasses that have been previously attributed to large airbursts created by meteoroids entering the Earth's atmosphere. The glasses are restricted to specific Late Pleistocene terrains: paleo-wetlands and soils rich in organic matter with SiO2-rich plant remains, salts and carbonates. 14C dating and paleomagnetic data indicate that the glasses were formed during at least two distinct periods. This rules out the hypothesis of a single large airburst as the cause of surface melting. Instead, burning of organic-rich soils in dried-out grassy wetlands during climate oscillations between wet and dry periods can account for the formation of the Pica glasses. Large oases did indeed form in the hyperarid Atacama Desert due to elevated groundwater tables and increased surface discharge during the Central Andean Pluvial Event (roughly coeval with the Mystery interval and Younger Dryas). Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for the other surface glasses previously attributed to extraterrestrial events.

García; +1 AuthorsJesica Murray; María Angélica Romero Orué; Emilce de las Mercedes López; Víctor H. García; Alicia Kirschbaum;Argentina is known for having one of the most extensive areas with high arsenic (As) concentration in groundwater in the world. These areas correspond to two main geological provinces, the Puna plateau and the Chaco-Pampean plain. In this large territory, there are some specific environments where the As concentration in groundwater is lower, and in some cases within the recommended limits for drinking water. In our study, we analyze and interpret the low arsenic concentrations reported for the Lerma valley, the easternmost intermontane basin of the Cordillera Oriental, located between the aforementioned high-arsenic geological provinces. The groundwater from this valley is used for the consumption of more than 600.000 inhabitants in the city of Salta and nearby towns. The incipient development of the valley since the late Miocene and the subsequent tectonic and climatic evolution favored low As concentrations with respect to the Puna and the Chaco-Pampean plain. The high-energy sedimentary environments thatcharacterized the area during Plio-Quaternary times and the composition of the sediments have controlled the characteristics of sediments the multilayered aquifer. Moreover, the absence of geogenic arsenic sources, climate, high rain infiltration rate, near neutralpH,redox conditions, and wells construction with screens settledincoarse productive layers favor groundwater of good quality. The geological and tectonic evolution of the Lerma valley could be extrapolated to other similar valleys in the NW of Argentinaand can be useful as tool for exploration of good quality groundwater. This is of high importance in Latin American territories with high As concentration in groundwater such as Argentina. Fil: Murray, Jesica María. In a volcanic area, sedimentation rates are directly affected by the history of the volcano and its eruptions. Here, we investigate the impact of Mt. Fuji Volcano (Japan) on Lake Motosu and its watershed. The lacustrine infill is studied by combining seismic reflection profiles and sediment cores. We show evidence of changes in sedimentation patterns during the depositional history of Lake Motosu. The frequency of large mass-transport deposits recorded within the lake decreases over the Holocene. Before ~ 8000 cal yr BP, large sublacustrine landslides and turbidites were filling the lacustrine depression. After 8000 cal yr BP, only one large sublacustrine landslide was recorded. The change in sedimentation pattern coincides with a change in sediment accumulation rate. Over the last 8000 cal yr BP, the sediment accumulation rate was not sufficient enough to produce large sublacustrine slope failures. Consequently, the frequency of large mass-transport deposits decreased and only turbidites resulting from surficial slope reworking occurred. These constitute the main sedimentary infill of the deep basin. We link the change in sediment accumulation rate with (i) climate and vegetation changes; and (ii) the Mt. Fuji eruptions which affected the Lake Motosu watershed by reducing its size and strongly modified its topography. Moreover, this study highlights that the deposition of turbidites in the deep basin of Lake Motosu is mainly controlled by the paleobathymetry of the lakefloor. Two large mass-transport deposits, occurring around ~ 8000 cal yr BP and ~ 2000 cal yr BP respectively, modified the paleobathymetry of the lakefloor and therefore changed the turbidite depositional pattern of Lake Motosu.

This paper presents, for the first time, the evolution of the local heterogeneous strain field around intra-granular cracking in polycrystalline ice, at the onset of tertiary creep. Owing to the high homologous temperature conditions and relatively low compressive stress applied, stress concentration at the crack tips is relaxed by plastic mechanisms associated with dynamic recrystallization. Strain field evolution followed by digital image correlation (DIC) directly shows the redistribution of strain during crack opening, but also the redistribution driven by crack tip plasticity mechanisms and recrystallization. Associated local changes in microstructure induce modifications of the local stress field evidenced by crack closure during deformation. At the ductile-to-brittle transition in ice, micro-cracking and dynamic recrystallization mechanisms can co-exist and interact, the later being efficient to relax stress concentration at the crack tips.

Nonetheless we still find high concentrations in measurements mainly in specific regions or cities. This dimensional shift, from EU-wide to hot-spot exceedances, calls for a novel approach to regional air quality management (to complement EU-wide existing policies). The SHERPA (Screening for High Emission Reduction Potentials on Air quality) modelling tool was developed in this context. It provides an additional tool to be used in support to regional/local decision makers responsible for the design of air quality plans. It is therefore important to evaluate the quality of the SHERPA model, and its behavior in the face of various kinds of uncertainty. Uncertainty and sensitivity analysis techniques can be used for this purpose. They both reveal the links between assumptions and forecasts, help in-model simplification and may highlight unexpected relationships between inputs and outputs. Thus, a policy steered SHERPA module - predicting air quality improvement linked to emission reduction scenarios - was evaluated by means of (1) uncertainty analysis (UA) to quantify uncertainty in the model output, and (2) by sensitivity analysis (SA) to identify the most influential input sources of this uncertainty. The results of this study provide relevant information about the key variables driving the SHERPA output uncertainty, and advise policy-makers and modellers where to place their efforts for an improved decision-making process.

How associations whose purpose is to defend human rights taken up the QPC? This question presupposes pertinent criteria to identify the associations concerned. Should we focus on all those whose QPCs have been reviewed by the Constitutional Council or should we make distinctions, in particular between actors acting for interests and those acting for causes? If so, on the ground of what criteria? Depending on the answers, the corpus to and the number of decisions taken into account is variable. This may explain some statistical discrepancies between different studies on this subject.

Gorostiaga; Aodren Le Gal; Laura Huguenin; Endika Quintano; Muriel Lissardy;Abstract Cystoseira baccata, a biological quality element for the implementation of the Water Framework and Marine Strategy EU Directives, is a dominant species in the subtidal rocky bottoms of the Basque coast. As part of this issue and given the need to better understand the functional character of benthic rocky ecosystems and use them as a reference to anthropogenic changes, two samplings campaigns were conducted in 2014 and 2017. Several population parameters (i.e. frond density, frond length frond-length/total frond-length ratio and taxonomic richness of epibionts) of C. baccata were studied from three sites monitored within the Water Directive Framework in relation to bathymetry during the two campaigns. The results showed a significant influence of bathymetry on frond density, frond length and the epibiotic load, and also an effect of sampling time for the seaweed and epibionts (epiflora and epifauna). The characterization of these functional population parameters for C. baccata under natural conditions are extremely valuable for its application to monitoring programs evaluating the ecological status of coastal waters in this region.

The fossil record of chondrichthyans (sharks, rays and chimaeroids) principally consists of isolated teeth, spines and dermal denticles, their cartilaginous skeleton being rarely preserved. Several Late Jurassic chondrichthyan assemblages have been studied in Europe based on large bulk samples, mainly in England, France, Germany and Spain. The first study of this kind in Switzerland is based on controlled excavations in Kimmeridgian deposits related to the construction of the A16 motorway in the Swiss Jura (Porrentruy, NW Switzerland). This study is based on more than 2000 isolated chondrichthyan remains (teeth, dental plates, spines and dermal denticles) and adds to our knowledge of the chondrichthyan distribution at a regional scale in Europe. We describe and identify this new fauna, define a new species of hybodont with crushing-type dentition (Asteracanthus udulfensis sp. nov.) and report for the first time the carcharhiniform Corysodon cirinensis in Switzerland. By the Late Jurassic, modern neoselachian sharks had overtaken hybodonts in European marine realms, the latter being gradually confined to brackish or freshwater environments. However, while the associated fauna of the Porrentruy platform indicates marine conditions, neoselachian sharks are surprisingly rare. The chondrichthyan assemblage is largely dominated by hybodonts, guitarfishes (rays) and chimaeroids that are all known to be euryhaline. This unexpected chondrichthyan faunal composition questions the presence of fresh to brackish water in the vicinity of the platform, and the occurrence of salinity fluctuations within a general context marine. This could explain the scarcity of neoselachian sharks and the extended success of hybodonts in the Porrentruy area as late as the Late Jurassic. Fil: Leuzinger, Léa Sylvia. It is admitted that initial colonization could have occurred during the Mesolithic period when glaciations would have shortened the open water travel distance from the continent. Meso-lithic sites in Corsica show relatively short and irregular occupation, and suggest discontinu-ous settling of very mobile groups probably traveling by boat. Previous genetic studies on Corsican populations showed internal differentiation and a relatively poor genetic relationship with continental populations, despite intense historical contacts, however local Meso-lithic-based genetic inheritance has never been properly estimated. The aim of this study was to explore the Corsican genetic profile of Y-chromosomes in order to trace the genetic signatures back to the first migrations to Corsica. This study included 321 samples from men throughout Corsica; samples from Provence and Tuscany were added to the cohort. All samples were typed for 92 Y-SNPs, and Y-STRs were also analyzed. Results revealed highly differentiated haplogroup patterns among Corsican populations. Haplogroup G had the highest frequency in Corsica, mostly displaying a unique Y-STR profile. When compared with Provence and Tuscany, Corsican populations displayed limited genetic proximity. Cor-sican populations present a remarkable Y-chromosome genetic mixture. Although the Cor-sican Y-chromosome profile shows similarities with both Provence and to a lesser extent Tuscany, it mainly displays its own specificity. This study confirms the high level of genetic diversity in Corsican populations and backs genetic contributions from prehistoric migrations associated with the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Metal Age eras, rather than from historical movements to Corsica, respectively attested by frequencies and TMRCA of haplogroups G2a-L91 and G2a-P15, J2a-M241 and J2-DYS445 = 6, R1b-U152 and R1b-U106. These results suggest that marine routes to reach the Corsican coast in many different points may have led to such a genetic heterogeneity.
