In general, this leads to a nonlinear, nonconvex optimization problem. We introduce an approach based on optimistic optimization to solve the resulting optimization problem. Optimistic optimization is based on recursive partitioning of the feasible set and is characterized by an efficient exploration strategy seeking for the optimal solution. The advantage of optimistic optimization is that one can guarantee bounds on the suboptimality with respect to the global optimum for a given computational budget. The 1-norm and ∞-norm objective functions often considered in model predictive control for continuous PWA systems are continuous PWA functions. We derive expressions for the core parameters required by optimistic optimization for the resulting optimization problem. By applying optimistic optimization, a sequence of control inputs is designed satisfying linear constraints. A bound on the suboptimality of the returned solution is also discussed. The performance of the proposed approach is illustrated with a case study on adaptive cruise control. Accepted Author Manuscript Team Bart De Schutter

It has been demonstrated that calcium alginate capsules can be used as an asphalt healing system by pre-placing rejuvenator (healing agent) into the asphalt mix and releasing the rejuvenator on demand (upon cracking). This healing mechanism relies on the properties of capsules which are determined by the capsule preparation process. In this study, to optimize the calcium alginate capsules, capsules are prepared using varying Alginate/Rejuvenator (A/R) ratios. Light microscope microscopy and Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) are employed to characterize the morphology and microstructure of these capsules. Thermal stability and mechanical property are investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and compressive tests. The testing results indicate that higher alginate content results in smaller diameter and lower thermal resistance, but higher compressive strength. The optimum A/R ratio of calcium alginate capsules is found to be 30/70. To prove the effectiveness of the optimized capsules, the capsules are embedded in asphalt mortar beams and a bending and healing program is carried out. The effect of capsule shell material on the mechanical response of asphalt mixture is evaluated through three-point bending on the mortar beams embedded with blank capsules (without the healing agent). Aged mortar beams containing alginate capsules encapsulating rejuvenator demonstrate a higher strength recovery after bending tests, which indicates effective healing due to the release of the rejuvenators from the capsules. The minimization problem of the cost function is equivalently transformed into a maximization problem of a reward function. The resulting optimal control problem is solved based on an optimistic planning algorithm. The control variables are the increments of system inputs and the action space is discretized as a finite set. Given a finite computational budget, a control sequence is returned by the optimistic planning algorithm. The first control action or a subsequence of the returned control sequence is applied to the system and then a receding-horizon scheme is adopted. The proposed optimistic planning approach allows us to limit the computational budget and also yields a characterization of the level of near-optimality of the resulting solution. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated with a numerical example. The results show that the optimistic planning approach results in a lower tracking error compared with a finite-horizon approach when a subsequence of the returned control sequence is applied. Major NCDs (cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, rheumatologic diseases and mental health) represent the predominant health problem of the Century. The prevention and control of NCDs are the priority of the World Health Organization 2008 Action Plan, the United Nations 2010 Resolution and the European Union 2010 Council. The novel trend for the management of NCDs is evolving towards integrative, holistic approaches. NCDs are intertwined with ageing. The European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA) has prioritised NCDs. To tackle them in their totality in order to reduce their burden and societal impact, it is proposed that NCDs should be considered as a single expression of disease with different risk factors and entities. An innovative integrated health system built around systems medicine and strategic partnerships is proposed to combat NCDs. It includes (i) understanding the social, economic, environmental, genetic determinants, as well as the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying NCDs; (ii) primary care and practice-based interprofessional collaboration; (iii) carefully phenotyped patients; (iv) development of unbiased and accurate biomarkers for comorbidities, severity and follow up of patients; (v) socio-economic science; (vi) development of guidelines; (vii) training; and (viii) policy decisions. The results could be applicable to all countries and adapted to local needs, economy and health systems. This paper reviews the complexity of NCDs intertwined with ageing. It gives an overview of the problem and proposes two practical examples of systems medicine (MeDALL) applied to allergy and to NCD co-morbidities (MACVIA-LR, Reference Site of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing).

Two systems designed for communicating availability status were empirically evaluated to understand what constitutes a successful way to achieve Visibility of people's communicative state. Some aspects of the Social Translucence constructs: Visibility, Awareness and Accountability were further operationalized into a questionnaire and tested relationships between these constructs through path modeling techniques. We found that to improve Visibility systems should support people in presenting their status in a contextualized yet abstract manner. Visibility was also found to have an impact on Awareness and Accountability but no significant relationship was seen between Awareness and Accountability. We argue that to design socially translucent systems it is insufficient to visualize people's availability status. It is also necessary to introduce mechanisms stimulating mutual Awareness that allow for maintaining shared, reciprocical knowledge about communicators' availability state, which then can encourage them to act in a socially responsible way.

An example of this framework is given with the construction and experimental validation of a dynamic mathematical model of the Ps/Pr promoters system of the TOL plasmid, which is used for the metabolism of m -xylene by Pseudomonas putida mt-2. Furthermore, the genetic circuit model is combined with the growth kinetics of the strain in batch cultures, demonstrating how the description of key genetic circuits can facilitate the improvement of existing growth kinetic models that fail to predict unusual growth patterns. Consequently, the dynamic model is combined with global sensitivity analysis, which is used to identify the presence of significant model parameters, constituting a model-based methodology for the formulation of genetic circuit optimization methods.

The code consists of two files: the file frkgcore.c contains the code necessary to obtain a solution to the problem prescribed in frkguser.c. The files Tables_N1-N2/arks_<N>_<a>_<b>.csv contain the coefficents for FRKG schemes at orders N=1...2 and, at each order, over a range of 18 Gegenbauer coefficient values running from 0 to 2N. The coefficients for each scheme is provided for up to Nx257 stages. The default problem is similar to the Brusselator presented by Hairer & Wanner (see (1.6) of Sect. IV.1): a stiff nonlinear diffusion-reaction problem describing chemical kinetics of a tri-molecular chemical reaction subject to periodic boundary conditions. Advection is added following Abdulle & Vilmart (2013). The problem is specified via three user defined functions: deriv() - populates f(W)=W_t; spec() - returns spectral radius; and Wexact(). User parameters are: RTOL - error tolerence; NE - number of grid points (including boundary) assuming a uniform square mesh; TEND; XMAX; XMIN. To apply the FRKG scheme to other problems it should only be necessary to supply a modified version of frkguser.c. Note that complex variables are used via complex.h internally to the time-marching function trystep(). Above trystep() no complex variables are visible. This concept enforces a new technological heap and lifecycle models to support smart connected products. The intelligence that smart, connected products embed paves the way for more sophisticated data gathering and analytics capabilities ushering in tandem a new era of smarter supply and production chains, smarter production processes, and even end-to-end connected manufacturing ecosystems. The main contribution of this paper is a smart shop-floor monitoring framework and underpinning technological solutions, which enables the proactive identification and resolution of shop-floor distributions. The proposed monitoring framework is based on the synergy between the novel concept of Manufacturing Blueprints and Complex Event Processing (CEP) technologies, while it encompasses a middleware layer that enables loose coupling and adaptation in practice. The framework provides the basis for actionable PSS and production “intelligence” and facilitates a shift toward more fact-based manufacturing decisions. Implementation and validation of the proposed framework is performed through a real-world case study which demonstrates its applicability, and assesses the usability and efficiency of the proposed solutions.

Pujol; Douglas Scott; Rafael Toledo-Moreo;In modern weak-lensing surveys, the common approach to correct for residual systematic biases in the shear is to calibrate shape measurement algorithms using simulations. These simulations must fully capture the complexity of the observations to avoid introducing any additional bias. In this paper we study the importance of faint galaxies below the observational detection limit of a survey. We simulate simplified Euclid VIS images including and excluding this faint population, and measure the shift in the multiplicative shear bias between the two sets of simulations. We measure the shear with three different algorithms: a moment-based approach, model fitting, and machine learning. We find that for all methods, a spatially uniform random distribution of faint galaxies introduces a shear multiplicative bias of the order of a few times $10^{-3}$. This value increases to the order of $10^{-2}$ when including the clustering of the faint galaxies, as measured in the Hubble Space Telescope Ultra-Deep Field. The magnification of the faint background galaxies due to the brighter galaxies along the line of sight is found to have a negligible impact on the multiplicative bias. We conclude that the undetected galaxies must be included in the calibration simulations with proper clustering properties down to magnitude 28 in order to reach a residual uncertainty on the multiplicative shear bias calibration of a few times $10^{-4}$, in line with the $2\times10^{-3}$ total accuracy budget required by the scientific objectives of the Euclid survey. In general, this leads to a nonlinear, nonconvex optimization problem. We introduce an approach based on optimistic optimization to solve the resulting optimization problem. Optimistic optimization is based on recursive partitioning of the feasible set and is characterized by an efficient exploration strategy seeking for the optimal solution. The advantage of optimistic optimization is that one can guarantee bounds on the suboptimality with respect to the global optimum for a given computational budget. The 1-norm and ∞-norm objective functions often considered in model predictive control for continuous PWA systems are continuous PWA functions. We derive expressions for the core parameters required by optimistic optimization for the resulting optimization problem. By applying optimistic optimization, a sequence of control inputs is designed satisfying linear constraints. A bound on the suboptimality of the returned solution is also discussed. It has been demonstrated that calcium alginate capsules can be used as an asphalt healing system by pre-placing rejuvenator (healing agent) into the asphalt mix and releasing the rejuvenator on demand (upon cracking). This healing mechanism relies on the properties of capsules which are determined by the capsule preparation process. In this study, to optimize the calcium alginate capsules, capsules are prepared using varying Alginate/Rejuvenator (A/R) ratios. Light microscope microscopy and Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) are employed to characterize the morphology and microstructure of these capsules. Thermal stability and mechanical property are investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and compressive tests. The testing results indicate that higher alginate content results in smaller diameter and lower thermal resistance, but higher compressive strength. The optimum A/R ratio of calcium alginate capsules is found to be 30/70. To prove the effectiveness of the optimized capsules, the capsules are embedded in asphalt mortar beams and a bending and healing program is carried out. The effect of capsule shell material on the mechanical response of asphalt mixture is evaluated through three-point bending on the mortar beams embedded with blank capsules (without the healing agent). Aged mortar beams containing alginate capsules encapsulating rejuvenator demonstrate a higher strength recovery after bending tests, which indicates effective healing due to the release of the rejuvenators from the capsules. The minimization problem of the cost function is equivalently transformed into a maximization problem of a reward function. The resulting optimal control problem is solved based on an optimistic planning algorithm. The control variables are the increments of system inputs and the action space is discretized as a finite set. Given a finite computational budget, a control sequence is returned by the optimistic planning algorithm. The first control action or a subsequence of the returned control sequence is applied to the system and then a receding-horizon scheme is adopted. The proposed optimistic planning approach allows us to limit the computational budget and also yields a characterization of the level of near-optimality of the resulting solution. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated with a numerical example. The results show that the optimistic planning approach results in a lower tracking error compared with a finite-horizon approach when a subsequence of the returned control sequence is applied. Major NCDs (cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, rheumatologic diseases and mental health) represent the predominant health problem of the Century. The prevention and control of NCDs are the priority of the World Health Organization 2008 Action Plan, the United Nations 2010 Resolution and the European Union 2010 Council. The novel trend for the management of NCDs is evolving towards integrative, holistic approaches. NCDs are intertwined with ageing. The European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA) has prioritised NCDs. To tackle them in their totality in order to reduce their burden and societal impact, it is proposed that NCDs should be considered as a single expression of disease with different risk factors and entities. An innovative integrated health system built around systems medicine and strategic partnerships is proposed to combat NCDs. It includes (i) understanding the social, economic, environmental, genetic determinants, as well as the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying NCDs; (ii) primary care and practice-based interprofessional collaboration; (iii) carefully phenotyped patients; (iv) development of unbiased and accurate biomarkers for comorbidities, severity and follow up of patients; (v) socio-economic science; (vi) development of guidelines; (vii) training; and (viii) policy decisions. The results could be applicable to all countries and adapted to local needs, economy and health systems. This paper reviews the complexity of NCDs intertwined with ageing. It gives an overview of the problem and proposes two practical examples of systems medicine (MeDALL) applied to allergy and to NCD co-morbidities (MACVIA-LR, Reference Site of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing).

Two systems designed for communicating availability status were empirically evaluated to understand what constitutes a successful way to achieve Visibility of people's communicative state. Some aspects of the Social Translucence constructs: Visibility, Awareness and Accountability were further operationalized into a questionnaire and tested relationships between these constructs through path modeling techniques. We found that to improve Visibility systems should support people in presenting their status in a contextualized yet abstract manner. Visibility was also found to have an impact on Awareness and Accountability but no significant relationship was seen between Awareness and Accountability. We argue that to design socially translucent systems it is insufficient to visualize people's availability status. It is also necessary to introduce mechanisms stimulating mutual Awareness that allow for maintaining shared, reciprocical knowledge about communicators' availability state, which then can encourage them to act in a socially responsible way.

An example of this framework is given with the construction and experimental validation of a dynamic mathematical model of the Ps/Pr promoters system of the TOL plasmid, which is used for the metabolism of m -xylene by Pseudomonas putida mt-2. Furthermore, the genetic circuit model is combined with the growth kinetics of the strain in batch cultures, demonstrating how the description of key genetic circuits can facilitate the improvement of existing growth kinetic models that fail to predict unusual growth patterns. Consequently, the dynamic model is combined with global sensitivity analysis, which is used to identify the presence of significant model parameters, constituting a model-based methodology for the formulation of genetic circuit optimization methods.

The code consists of two files: the file frkgcore.c contains the code necessary to obtain a solution to the problem prescribed in frkguser.c. The files Tables_N1-N2/arks_<N>_<a>_<b>.csv contain the coefficents for FRKG schemes at orders N=1...2 and, at each order, over a range of 18 Gegenbauer coefficient values running from 0 to 2N. The coefficients for each scheme is provided for up to Nx257 stages. The default problem is similar to the Brusselator presented by Hairer & Wanner (see (1.6) of Sect. IV.1): a stiff nonlinear diffusion-reaction problem describing chemical kinetics of a tri-molecular chemical reaction subject to periodic boundary conditions. Advection is added following Abdulle & Vilmart (2013). The problem is specified via three user defined functions: deriv() - populates f(W)=W_t; spec() - returns spectral radius; and Wexact(). User parameters are: RTOL - error tolerence; NE - number of grid points (including boundary) assuming a uniform square mesh; TEND; XMAX; XMIN. To apply the FRKG scheme to other problems it should only be necessary to supply a modified version of frkguser.c. This concept enforces a new technological heap and lifecycle models to support smart connected products. The intelligence that smart, connected products embed paves the way for more sophisticated data gathering and analytics capabilities ushering in tandem a new era of smarter supply and production chains, smarter production processes, and even end-to-end connected manufacturing ecosystems. The main contribution of this paper is a smart shop-floor monitoring framework and underpinning technological solutions, which enables the proactive identification and resolution of shop-floor distributions. The proposed monitoring framework is based on the synergy between the novel concept of Manufacturing Blueprints and Complex Event Processing (CEP) technologies, while it encompasses a middleware layer that enables loose coupling and adaptation in practice. The framework provides the basis for actionable PSS and production “intelligence” and facilitates a shift toward more fact-based manufacturing decisions. Implementation and validation of the proposed framework is performed through a real-world case study which demonstrates its applicability, and assesses the usability and efficiency of the proposed solutions.

Pujol; Douglas Scott; Rafael Toledo-Moreo;In modern weak-lensing surveys, the common approach to correct for residual systematic biases in the shear is to calibrate shape measurement algorithms using simulations. These simulations must fully capture the complexity of the observations to avoid introducing any additional bias. In this paper we study the importance of faint galaxies below the observational detection limit of a survey. We simulate simplified Euclid VIS images including and excluding this faint population, and measure the shift in the multiplicative shear bias between the two sets of simulations. We measure the shear with three different algorithms: a moment-based approach, model fitting, and machine learning. We find that for all methods, a spatially uniform random distribution of faint galaxies introduces a shear multiplicative bias of the order of a few times $10^{-3}$. This value increases to the order of $10^{-2}$ when including the clustering of the faint galaxies, as measured in the Hubble Space Telescope Ultra-Deep Field. The magnification of the faint background galaxies due to the brighter galaxies along the line of sight is found to have a negligible impact on the multiplicative bias. We conclude that the undetected galaxies must be included in the calibration simulations with proper clustering properties down to magnitude 28 in order to reach a residual uncertainty on the multiplicative shear bias calibration of a few times $10^{-4}$, in line with the $2\times10^{-3}$ total accuracy budget required by the scientific objectives of the Euclid survey. We propose two complementary methods for including faint galaxy clustering in the calibration simulations. Version published in A&A
