International audience; Terahertz pulsed imaging has attracted considerable interest for revealing the stratigraphy and hidden features of art paintings. The reconstruction of the stratigraphy is based on the precise extraction of THz echo parameters from the reflected signals. Several historical panel paintings and wall paintings have been well studied by THz reflective imaging, in which the detailed stratigraphy has been successfully revealed. To our knowledge, however, the stratigraphy of oil paintings has not been clearly uncovered by THz imaging, since the paint layers in an oil painting on canvas, especially for the 16 th and 17 th century art works, are usually very thin (~10 m) in the THz regime. Therefore, in order to improve the performance of THz imaging, advanced signal-processing techniques with higher depth-resolution are still needed. In this study, THz reflective imaging is employed to reveal for the first time the detailed stratigraphy of a 17th century Italian oil painting on canvas. The paint layers on the supporting canvas are very thin in the THz regime, as the THz echoes corresponding to the stratigraphy totally overlap in the first cycle of the reflected THz signal. THz sparse deconvolution based on an iterative shrinkage algorithm is utilized to resolve the overlapping echoes. Based on the deconvolved signals, the detailed stratigraphy of this oil painting on canvas, including the varnish, pictorial, underdrawing, and ground layers, is successfully revealed. The THz C-and B-scans based on the THz deconvolved signals also enable us to reveal the features of each layer. Our results thus enhance the capability of terahertz imaging to perform detailed analysis and diagnostics of historical oil paintings on canvas with foreseen applications for the study of the artist's technique and for authentication.

To examine the potentially competing influences of microzooplankton and calcite mineral ballast on organic matter remineralization, we incubated diatoms in darkness in rolling tanks with and without added calcite minerals (coccoliths) and microzooplankton (rotifers). Concentrations of particulate organic matter (POM in suspension or in aggregates), of dissolved organic matter (DOM), and of dissolved inorganic nutrients were monitored over 8 days. The presence of rotifers enhanced the remineralization of ammonium and phosphate, but not dissolved silicon, from the biogenic particulate matter, up to 40% of which became incorporated into aggregates early in the experiment. Added calcite resulted in rates of excretion of ammonium and phosphate by rotifers that were depressed by 67% and 36%, respectively, demonstrating the potential for minerals to inhibit the destruction of POM by zooplankton in the water column. Lastly, the presence of the rotifers and added calcite minerals resulted in a more rapid initial rate of aggregation, although not a greater overall amount of aggregation during the experiment.

The PhD thesis is a contribution to the definition of a new banking risk related to the economic impacts of climate change. The climate change will impact the clients of a corporate and investment bank and will have consequences on its strategy and the composition of its business portfolio. Nevertheless, uncertainties remain on the economic impacts of climate change and create a new risk for the banks: the carbon risk. The quantification of “GreenHouse Gases (GHG) emissions induced” by the businesses of the bank’s clients is a first step required for managing this new risk. After having studied the various models of carbon accounting, this PhD thesis proposes an analysis tool based on a new form of carbon accounting by allocating the GHG emissions to the economic agents in accordance with their ability to reduce it: “the accounting by issue”. This tool allows mapping sectorally and geographically of the “GHG emissions induced” by a financing and investment portfolio (in debt and equity capital).

Monograph derived from Union Symposia at the 2003 General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG); Although more and more robust evidence of whole mantle convection comes from seismic tomography and geoid modeling, the rare gases and other isotopic or trace element signatures of ridge and hotspot basalts indicate the presence of various isolated geochemic al reservoirs in the mantle. We discuss this discrepancy between the fluid dynamic views of mantle convection and the chemical observations. We compare the standard model of geodynamicists where the mantle behaves as a fluid mostly heated from within with the findings of seismic tomography. We suggest that a significant part of the subducted oceanic crust transformed into dense eclogitic assemblages, partially segregates to form a D'' layer growing with time. We show how a two component marble cake mantle filling the whole mantle except D'' can account for the variability of OIBs and MORBs in rare gases. We then present the state of the art in thermochemical convection of the mantle and emphasize the numerical and conceptual progress that must be made to quantitatively test the geochemical hypothesis.

SSM is linearly related to the radar backscattering coefficients (σ0) over sand. Linear relationships are commonly used for inverting SSM in semi-arid areas from SAR and scatterometer data. Recent studies demonstrated that SSM can also be inversed from radar altimetry backscattering. An inversion method combining radar altimetry σ0 and land surface model (LSM) outputs is proposed here.

By bringing together rigorous yet accessible contributions, it shows how, since the 2002 transition, Kenya has been striving for change through economic modernisation and political liberalisation. The planned transformations are coming to fruition, even if the legacies of the past and political habits are slowing down the process. The various chapters take us from developmental capitalism to extreme poverty and enduring inequalities, from reforms on paper to mixed results in multiple sectors: decentralised governance, natural resources, land, and education. They also explore Kenya’s ancient and colonial history and the diversity of its population. Thus, the book helps understand contemporary political, religious and community cleavages, the asymmetries between towns and the countryside, between Nairobi and the coast, in a country open to the world, as much through trade and finance as through art networks.

Technological revolutions have increased the world’s wealth to a level that was once unimaginable. They have done so unevenly, however, and in ways that have accelerated climate change. Technology Transfer and Innovation for Low-Carbon Development argues that most of the emissions reductions required to achieve the Paris Agreement goals can be reached through the global deployment of existing and commercially proven low-carbon technologies (LCTs). Deploying LCTs from high-income countries—which account for 80 percent of all LCT innovations and 70 percent of all LCT exports—to developing countries, where they are needed most, will not be easy; but the evidence is clear that it can be done. Transferring LCTs is not only necessary to meet the climate targets, but it is also an opportunity to achieve development goals. The policies needed to deploy LCTs to developing countries could raise output and employment while yielding welfare benefits, such as reduced air and water pollution. Moreover, adopting LCT offers an opportunity for countries to benefit from participation in global value chains and to become LCT producers and exporters.

Abstract The magnetic fabric of the Pliocene Kızılkaya ignimbrite in the Central Anatolian Volcanic Province has been investigated by anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) and isothermal remanent magnetization (AIRM). Seven sections were sampled at various stratigraphic heights within the devitrified portion of the ignimbrite. The magnetic mineralogy is complex: titanomagnetite occurs as magmatic grains, and as inclusions in other phenocryst and glass shards; an oxidized phase and hematite occur in deposit levels affected by alteration processes. The disturbance produced by lithic and pumice clasts has been reduced by discarding the specimens that deviate more than ±1σ from the site mean value of the density. The AMS fabric varies along each individual section. Neither the AMS magnetic lineation nor the magnetic foliation plunge clearly define a common area as the vent location. The AIRM fabric of low-coercivity minerals, mainly represented by free titanomagnetite grains of magmatic origin, is consistent between sites and the inferred flow directions converge on a region near Derinkuyu, in the Nevsehir plateau, previously reported as the Kızılkaya ignimbrite source area. This study shows that systematic use of the remanent fabric improves the results given by AMS and aids the identification of the primary magnetic fabric related to the ignimbrite emplacement dynamics.
