description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object 2014 NetherlandsPublisher:IEEE Authors: Bosse, T.; Mogles, N.;Bosse, T.; Mogles, N.;This paper compares population-based and agent-based simulation of the dynamics of group Situation Awareness. The question how Situation Awareness spreads among a team of agents is important for numerous applications. In this paper, a population-based and an agent-based model of this process are proposed, and applied to a case study in aviation. A number of relevant simulations of the models are performed, to investigate whether the behaviour of the population-based model can approximate the pattern produced by the agent-based model. It was demonstrated that, especially for larger populations, the dynamics of the agent-based simulations can be approximated by population-based simulations, since both models demonstrate a similar pattern.

Although widely studied in the literature, the concept is difficult to be analyzed in a systematic manner, due to 1) the abundance of factors that can be related to Shared SA, and 2) the lack of a commonly agreed, formal definition. This paper proposes Agent-Based Social Simulation as a scientific method to study questions related to Shared SA. Founded in theories from Social Science, an agent-based framework is presented, which allows users to explore a variety of hypothetical scenarios in an automated manner. The resulting global patterns are illustrated by discussing a number of simulation results for different parameter settings. These simulations show that, although preliminary, the presented framework has potential as an analytical tool for researchers and policy makers.

This paper presents a family of empirical studies about the applicability and usefulness of an approach for modeling evolving requirements. The empirical studies involved different categories of users (researchers, master students and domain experts) who have applied the approach to a real industrial evolutionary scenario drawn from the Air Traffic Management (ATM) domain. The results from the studies demonstrated the usefulness of the approach for requirements evolution in complex industrial settings such as the ones in the ATM domain. Furthermore, the validation provided us useful insights about the problem of requirements evolution faced in different industrial contexts.

Nevertheless, complete private provision without governmental control is only rarely considered. A main consideration against private roads would be that operators would be primarily interested in maximizing profits, which - given the market power they will have - will typically not lead to welfare-maximizing tolls and capacities. An important question is whether these discrepancies can be mitigated by a proper design of auctions for concessions of private roads. This paper therefore analyses capacity choice and toll setting by private investors in a competitive bidding framework organized by the government. We develop a two-link network simulation model with an untolled alternative to determine relative efficiency effects, and analyze rules for the government to organize the bidding process such that a more desired (welfare optimal) outcome is achieved. Our results show that, depending on the design of the auction, its outcomes may vary strongly, and may approach the maximum possible (second-best) welfare gains. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. When a traffic hotspot happens, however, there is a delay before measures such as heavy replication of content can be applied. This paper investigates the potential for predicting hotspots sufficiently far, albeit shortly, in advance, so that preventive action can be taken before the hotpot takes place. Performing accurate load predictions appears to be a daunting challenge at first glance, but this paper shows that, when applied to Web-server page-request traffic, even elementary prediction techniques can have a surprising forecasting power. We first argue this predictability from principles, and then confirm it by the analysis of empirical data, which reveals that large server overloads can often be seen well in advance. This allows steps to be taken to reduce substantially the degradation of service quality.

Specifically, the authors explore the activities and behaviors of employees with customer contact (i.e. boundary-spanning employees (BSEs)) to deepen and broaden their knowledge about customers for the development of innovations. - Design/methodology/approach – Qualitative research based on multiple semi-structured interviews with BSEs of six logistics service providers was conducted to explore the deepening and broadening of customer knowledge during innovation development. Data were analyzed for similarities and differences in BSEs’ knowledge acquisition and their interactions with customers across six innovations. - Findings – Results show that BSEs engage sequentially in deepening and broadening customer knowledge throughout the logistics innovation development process. Yet, the specific sequence depends on the type of innovation developed (customized vs standardized). Customer knowledge tends to be deepened in one-on-one interactions, while knowledge tends to be broadened in interactions with numerous and diverse customer firm members. - Research limitations/implications – In general, this paper contributes to the understanding of the individuals’ behaviors underlying organization-level phenomena, such as logistics service providers’ customer knowledge acquisition. - Practical implications – Findings illustrate that BSEs are well advised to concentrate on either deepening or broadening their customer knowledge in a single stage of the logistics innovation development process but switch between these two knowledge acquisition approaches from stage-to-stage to leverage customer interaction. - Originality/value – By investigating firms’ customer knowledge acquisition at the individual level, this paper addresses the calls in the literature for more research into the microfoundations of organizational phenomena. This problem is usually studied in a perfectly competitive framework, which essentially predicts that when the imbalance is sufficiently large, the freight price of transport from low demand regions to high demand regions, the so-called backhaul price, drops to zero. This result is inconsistent with empirical observations. In this paper, we develop a matching model to address this inconsistency. We argue that market friction, through search imperfections due to lack of information by carriers on the (future) demand for transport by customers, may play an important role in the determination of backhaul prices. We demonstrate that carriers are at least compensated for the time they search for customers, so the backhaul price is in general positive. The matching model is numerically applied to the inland navigation shipping market in the Rhine river area in Western-Europe. We also analyse the effects of increases in transport costs on transport flows and backhaul prices, e.g. due to climate changes.

Will automated driving help or hurt our efforts to remedy climate change? The overall impact of transportation and mobility on the global ecosystem is clear: changes to that system can greatly affect climate outcomes. The design of mobility and automotive systems will influence key factors such as driving style, fuel choice, ride sharing, traffic patterns, and total mileage. However, to date, there are few research efforts that explicitly focus on these overlapping themes (automated driving & climate changes) within the HCI and AutomotiveUI communities. Our intention is to grow this community and awareness of the related problems. Specifically, in this workshop, we invite designers, researchers, and practitioners from the sustainable HCI, persuasive design, AutomotiveUI, and mobility communities to collaborate in finding ways to make future mobility more sustainable. Using embodied design improvisation and design fiction methods, we will explore the ways that systems affect behavior which then affect the environment.

The model is motivated by the fact that in real life, users can not exactly plan the time at which they depart from home, nor the delay they experience before they join the congestion bottleneck under investigation. We show that the arrival density advocated by the Nash equilibrium in Vickrey's model, is not a user equilibrium in the model with random uncertainty. We then investigate the existence of a user equilibrium for the latter and show that in general such an equilibrium can neither be a pure Nash equilibrium, nor a mixed equilibrium with a continuous density. Our results imply that when random distortions influence user decisions, the dynamics of standard bottleneck models are inadequate to describe such more complex situations. We illustrate with numerical analysis how the mechanics of a bottleneck with delayed arrivals are unstable for any continuous arrival strategy, thus shedding more light on the non-existence result.

The question how Situation Awareness spreads among a team of agents is important for numerous applications. In this paper, a population-based and an agent-based model of this process are proposed, and applied to a case study in aviation. A number of relevant simulations of the models are performed, to investigate whether the behaviour of the population-based model can approximate the pattern produced by the agent-based model. It was demonstrated that, especially for larger populations, the dynamics of the agent-based simulations can be approximated by population-based simulations, since both models demonstrate a similar pattern.

Although widely studied in the literature, the concept is difficult to be analyzed in a systematic manner, due to 1) the abundance of factors that can be related to Shared SA, and 2) the lack of a commonly agreed, formal definition. This paper proposes Agent-Based Social Simulation as a scientific method to study questions related to Shared SA. Founded in theories from Social Science, an agent-based framework is presented, which allows users to explore a variety of hypothetical scenarios in an automated manner. The resulting global patterns are illustrated by discussing a number of simulation results for different parameter settings. These simulations show that, although preliminary, the presented framework has potential as an analytical tool for researchers and policy makers.

This paper presents a family of empirical studies about the applicability and usefulness of an approach for modeling evolving requirements. The empirical studies involved different categories of users (researchers, master students and domain experts) who have applied the approach to a real industrial evolutionary scenario drawn from the Air Traffic Management (ATM) domain. The results from the studies demonstrated the usefulness of the approach for requirements evolution in complex industrial settings such as the ones in the ATM domain. Furthermore, the validation provided us useful insights about the problem of requirements evolution faced in different industrial contexts.

Nevertheless, complete private provision without governmental control is only rarely considered. A main consideration against private roads would be that operators would be primarily interested in maximizing profits, which - given the market power they will have - will typically not lead to welfare-maximizing tolls and capacities. An important question is whether these discrepancies can be mitigated by a proper design of auctions for concessions of private roads. This paper therefore analyses capacity choice and toll setting by private investors in a competitive bidding framework organized by the government. We develop a two-link network simulation model with an untolled alternative to determine relative efficiency effects, and analyze rules for the government to organize the bidding process such that a more desired (welfare optimal) outcome is achieved. Our results show that, depending on the design of the auction, its outcomes may vary strongly, and may approach the maximum possible (second-best) welfare gains. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. When a traffic hotspot happens, however, there is a delay before measures such as heavy replication of content can be applied. This paper investigates the potential for predicting hotspots sufficiently far, albeit shortly, in advance, so that preventive action can be taken before the hotpot takes place. Performing accurate load predictions appears to be a daunting challenge at first glance, but this paper shows that, when applied to Web-server page-request traffic, even elementary prediction techniques can have a surprising forecasting power. We first argue this predictability from principles, and then confirm it by the analysis of empirical data, which reveals that large server overloads can often be seen well in advance. This allows steps to be taken to reduce substantially the degradation of service quality.

Specifically, the authors explore the activities and behaviors of employees with customer contact (i.e. boundary-spanning employees (BSEs)) to deepen and broaden their knowledge about customers for the development of innovations. - Design/methodology/approach – Qualitative research based on multiple semi-structured interviews with BSEs of six logistics service providers was conducted to explore the deepening and broadening of customer knowledge during innovation development. Data were analyzed for similarities and differences in BSEs’ knowledge acquisition and their interactions with customers across six innovations. - Findings – Results show that BSEs engage sequentially in deepening and broadening customer knowledge throughout the logistics innovation development process. Yet, the specific sequence depends on the type of innovation developed (customized vs standardized). Customer knowledge tends to be deepened in one-on-one interactions, while knowledge tends to be broadened in interactions with numerous and diverse customer firm members. - Research limitations/implications – In general, this paper contributes to the understanding of the individuals’ behaviors underlying organization-level phenomena, such as logistics service providers’ customer knowledge acquisition. - Practical implications – Findings illustrate that BSEs are well advised to concentrate on either deepening or broadening their customer knowledge in a single stage of the logistics innovation development process but switch between these two knowledge acquisition approaches from stage-to-stage to leverage customer interaction. - Originality/value – By investigating firms’ customer knowledge acquisition at the individual level, this paper addresses the calls in the literature for more research into the microfoundations of organizational phenomena. This problem is usually studied in a perfectly competitive framework, which essentially predicts that when the imbalance is sufficiently large, the freight price of transport from low demand regions to high demand regions, the so-called backhaul price, drops to zero. This result is inconsistent with empirical observations. In this paper, we develop a matching model to address this inconsistency. We argue that market friction, through search imperfections due to lack of information by carriers on the (future) demand for transport by customers, may play an important role in the determination of backhaul prices. We demonstrate that carriers are at least compensated for the time they search for customers, so the backhaul price is in general positive. The matching model is numerically applied to the inland navigation shipping market in the Rhine river area in Western-Europe. We also analyse the effects of increases in transport costs on transport flows and backhaul prices, e.g. due to climate changes.

Will automated driving help or hurt our efforts to remedy climate change? The overall impact of transportation and mobility on the global ecosystem is clear: changes to that system can greatly affect climate outcomes. The design of mobility and automotive systems will influence key factors such as driving style, fuel choice, ride sharing, traffic patterns, and total mileage. However, to date, there are few research efforts that explicitly focus on these overlapping themes (automated driving & climate changes) within the HCI and AutomotiveUI communities. Our intention is to grow this community and awareness of the related problems. Specifically, in this workshop, we invite designers, researchers, and practitioners from the sustainable HCI, persuasive design, AutomotiveUI, and mobility communities to collaborate in finding ways to make future mobility more sustainable. Using embodied design improvisation and design fiction methods, we will explore the ways that systems affect behavior which then affect the environment.

The model is motivated by the fact that in real life, users can not exactly plan the time at which they depart from home, nor the delay they experience before they join the congestion bottleneck under investigation. We show that the arrival density advocated by the Nash equilibrium in Vickrey's model, is not a user equilibrium in the model with random uncertainty. We then investigate the existence of a user equilibrium for the latter and show that in general such an equilibrium can neither be a pure Nash equilibrium, nor a mixed equilibrium with a continuous density. Our results imply that when random distortions influence user decisions, the dynamics of standard bottleneck models are inadequate to describe such more complex situations. We illustrate with numerical analysis how the mechanics of a bottleneck with delayed arrivals are unstable for any continuous arrival strategy, thus shedding more light on the non-existence result.
