    We compare the performance of the Boston Immediate Acceptance (IA) and Gale–Shapley Deferred Acceptance (DA) mechanisms in a laboratory setting where we increase the number of participants per match. In our experiment, we first increase the number of students per match from 4 to 40; when we do so, participant truth-telling increases under DA but decreases under IA, leading to a decrease in efficiency under both mechanisms. Furthermore, we find that DA remains more stable than IA, regardless of scale. We then further increase the number of participants per match to 4,000 through the introduction of robots. When robots report their preferences truthfully, we find that scale has no effect on human best response behavior. By contrast, when we program the robots to draw their strategies from the distribution of empirical human strategies, we find that our increase in scale increases human ex-post best responses under both mechanisms. CogSci 2011 Proceedings : ISBN 978-0-9768318-7-7; International audience; This article presents a computational model of the visual strategies involved in processing textual material. An experiment is presented in which participants performed different tasks on a multi-paragraph page (searching a target word, searching the most relevant paragraph according to a goal, memorizing paragraphs). The proposed model predicts eye movements based on 5 parameters. The weighting of parameters is determined for each task by means of a multidimensional comparison of participant and artificial scanpaths.

    Authors: Paviot, Y.;

    Les technologies actuelles permettent l'intégration de systèmes de plus en plus complexes sur une seule puce. L'augmentation de la complexité induit un accroissement du temps de conception alors que paradoxalement, le concurrence économique impose des temps de mise sur le marché de plus en plus courts. Pour tenter de limiter ce décalage et d'accroître la productivité, l'industrie fait de plus en plus appel à la réutilisation de composants logiciels et matériels pour concevoir leurs systèmes.L'un des problèmes de ce type de conception est celui de la réalisation de la communication entre composants. Cette thèse traite de la communication entre processeurs réalisée par des interfaces mixtes logicielles/matérielles. Leur difficulté de conception et l'impact du choix de partitionnement entre parties logicielles et matérielles nécessitent le développement de méthodes de génération automatique d'interfaces logicielles/matérielles pour l'exploration du partitionnement des services de communication.La contribution de cette thèse consiste en une formalisation des problèmes liés à l'implémentation mixte logicielle/matérielle des services de communication et une proposition de flot pour la génération automatique d'interfaces. Des expériences de réalisations de primitives MPI ont permis d'appréhender le problème et de proposer un flot de génération automatique. Current technologies enable the integration of more and more complex systems on a single chip. The increase in complexity leads to an increase of design time whereas economical competition demands to ever shorter time to market. In order to try to fill this gap and to increase productivity, reuse of HW and SW components to design systems is used more and more by industrial firms.One problem of these design methodologies is about communication between components. The topic of this thesis is hardware/software interface implementation for communication between processors. Interface design difficulties and impact of hardware/software partitioning require automatic interfaces generation in order to enable exploration of partitioning solutions.The contributions of this thesis are formalization of problems with regard to communication services implementation by hardware/software interface, and a suggestion of an automatic interfaces generation flow. Two experiences with MPI implementations led to understanding of the partitioning problematics and to an automatic generation flow.

    Abstract In budding yeast, loss of topoisomerase III, encoded by the TOP3 gene, leads to a genomic instability phenotype that includes slow growth, hyper-sensitivity to genotoxic agents, mitotic hyper-recombination, increased chromosome missegregation, and meiotic failure. Slow growth and other defects of top3 mutants are suppressed by mutation of SGS1, which encodes the only RecQ helicase in S. cerevisiae. sgs1 is epistatic to top3, suggesting that the two proteins act in the same pathway. To identify other factors that function in the Sgs1-Top3 pathway, we undertook a genetic screen for non-sgs1 suppressors of top3 defects. We found that slow growth and DNA damage sensitivity of top3 mutants are suppressed by mutations in RAD51, RAD54, RAD55, and RAD57. In contrast, top3 mutants show extreme synergistic growth defects with mutations in RAD50, MRE11, XRS2, RDH54, and RAD1. We also analyzed recombination at the SUP4-o region, showing that in a rad51, rad54, rad55, or rad57 background top3Δ does not increase recombination to the same degree as in a wild-type strain. These results suggest that the presence of the Rad51 homologous recombination complex in a top3 background facilitates creation of detrimental intermediates by Sgs1. We present a model wherein Rad51 helps recruit Sgs1-Top3 to sites of replicative damage.

    The highly complex structure of the human brain is strongly shaped by genetic influences. Subcortical brain regions form circuits with cortical areas to coordinate movement, learning, memory and motivation, and altered circuits can lead to abnormal behaviour and disease. To investigate how common genetic variants affect the structure of these brain regions, here we conduct genome-wide association studies of the volumes of seven subcortical regions and the intracranial volume derived from magnetic resonance images of 30,717 individuals from 50 cohorts. We identify five novel genetic variants influencing the volumes of the putamen and caudate nucleus. We also find stronger evidence for three loci with previously established influences on hippocampal volume and intracranial volume. These variants show specific volumetric effects on brain structures rather than global effects across structures. The strongest effects were found for the putamen, where a novel intergenic locus with replicable influence on volume (rs945270; P = 1.08 x 10(-33); 0.52% variance explained) showed evidence of altering the expression of the KTN1 gene in both brain and blood tissue. Variants influencing putamen volume clustered near developmental genes that regulate apoptosis, axon guidance and vesicle transport. Identification of these genetic variants provides insight into the causes of variability in human brain development, and may help to determine mechanisms of neuropsychiatric dysfunction. AbstractNow that evasion of carbon dioxide (CO2) from inland waters is accounted for in global carbon models, it is crucial to quantify how these fluxes have changed in the past and forecast how they may alter in the future in response to local and global change. Here we developed a sediment proxy for the concentration of summer surface dissolved CO2 concentration and used it to reconstruct changes over the past 150 years for three large lakes that have been affected by climate warming, changes in nutrient load, and detrital terrigenous supplies. Initially CO2 neutral to the atmosphere, all three lakes subsequently fluctuated between near equilibrium and supersaturation. Although catchment inputs have supplied CO2 to the lakes, internal processes and reallocation have ultimately regulated decadal changes in lake surface CO2 concentration. Nutrient concentration has been the dominant driver of CO2 variability for a century although the reproducible, nonmonotonic relationship of CO2 to nutrient concentration suggests an interplay between metabolic and chemical processes. Yet for two of these lakes, climatic control of CO2 concentrations has been important over the last 30 years, promoting higher surface CO2 concentrations, likely by decreasing hypolimnetic carbon storage. This new approach offers the unique opportunity to scale, a posteriori, the long‐term impact of human activities on lake CO2.

    The interplay between charged particles and turbulent magnetic fields is crucial to understanding how cosmic rays propagate through space. A key parameter which controls this interplay is the ratio of the particle gyroradius to the correlation length of the magnetic turbulence. For the vast majority of cosmic rays detected at the Earth, this parameter is small, and the particles are well confined by the Galactic magnetic field. But for cosmic rays more energetic than about 30 EeV, this parameter is large. These highest energy particles are not confined to the Milky Way and are presumed to be extragalactic in origin. Identifying their sources requires understanding how they are deflected by the intergalactic magnetic field, which appears to be weak, turbulent with an unknown correlation length, and possibly spatially intermittent. This is particularly relevant given the recent detection by the Pierre Auger Observatory of a significant dipole anisotropy in the arrival directions of cosmic rays of energy above 8 EeV. Here we report measurements of energetic-particle propagation through a random magnetic field in a laser-produced plasma. We characterize the diffusive transport of these particles and recover experimentally pitch-angle scattering measurements and extrapolate to find their mean free path and the associated diffusion coefficient, which show scaling-relations consistent with theoretical studies. This experiment validates these theoretical tools for analyzing the propagation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays through the intergalactic medium.

    Objectives: Cardiac arrest is a catastrophic event that may arise during the management of convulsive status epilepticus. We aimed to report the clinical characteristics, outcomes, and early predictors of convulsive status epilepticus–related cardiac arrest. Design: Retrospective multicenter study. Setting: Seventeen university or university affiliated participating ICUs in France and Belgium. Patients: Consecutive patients admitted to the participating ICUs for management of successfully resuscitated out-of-hospital cardiac arrest complicating the initial management of convulsive status epilepticus between 2000 and 2015. Patients were compared with controls without cardiac arrest identified in a single-center registry of convulsive status epilepticus patients, regarding characteristics, management, and outcome. Interventions: None. Measurements and Main Results: We included 49 cases with convulsive status epilepticus–cardiac arrest and 235 controls. In the cases, median time from medical team arrival to cardiac arrest was 25 minutes (interquartile range, 5–85 min). First recorded rhythm was asystole in 25 patients (51%) and pulseless electrical activity in 13 patients (27%). A significantly larger proportion of patients had a favorable 1-year outcome (Glasgow Outcome Scale score of 5) among controls (90/235; 38%) than among cases (10/49; 21%; p = 0.02). By multivariate analysis, independent predictors of cardiac arrest were pulse oximetry less than 97% on scene (odds ratio, 2.66; 95% CI, 1.03–7.26; p = 0.04), drug poisoning as the cause of convulsive status epilepticus (odds ratio, 4.13; 95% CI, 1.27–13.53; p = 0.02), and complications during early management (odds ratio, 11.98; 95% CI, 4.67–34.69; p < 0.0001). Having at least one comorbidity among cardiac, respiratory, and neurologic (other than epilepsy) conditions predicted absence of cardiac arrest (odds ratio, 0.28; 95% CI, 0.10–0.80; p = 0.02). Conclusions: In patients managed for convulsive status epilepticus, relative hypoxemia, on-scene management complications, and drug poisoning as the cause of convulsive status epilepticus were strong early predictors of cardiac arrest, suggesting areas for improvement.

    We study the geometry of the Thurston metric on the Teichm\"uller space $\mathcal{T}(S)$ of hyperbolic structures on a surface $S$. Some of our results on the coarse geometry of this metric apply to arbitrary surfaces $S$ of finite type; however, we focus particular attention on the case where the surface is a once-punctured torus, $S_{1,1}$. In that case, our results provide a detailed picture of the infinitesimal, local, and global behavior of the geodesics of the Thurston metric, as well as an analogue of Royden's theorem. Comment: 50 pages, 14 figures. v6: Minor change in introduction. v5: Remark 5.5 adds info about Figure 0. v4: Minor correction in Thm 3.10. v3: Revised according to referee report. v2: Minor corrections

    Authors: Paviot, Y.;
