Freeze–thaw cycles can cause frost heaving pressure in the rock matrix and result in micro cracking, which influences its physical and mechanical properties. A series of physical and mechanical tests are performed on red sandstone to investigate the fracture behavior and mechanical properties induced by freeze–thaw cycles. The testing results show that after being treated by freeze–thaw cycles, the mass, density, and P-wave velocity of rocks decrease, while the volume of rocks increases. The peak stress and elastic modulus decrease with the increase in freeze–thaw cycles, while peak strain and Poisson’s rate increase. When 30 MPa confining pressure is applied, the peak stress and elastic modulus of untreated samples reach the maximum values of 92.49 MPa and 12.84 GPa, respectively. However, after being treated by 30 freeze–thaw cycles, the peak strain and Poisson’s rate reach the maximum values of 0.631 % and 0.18, respectively. The development of micro-cracks and the growth of pores induced by frost heaving stress are the main reasons for the deterioration of the mechanical properties of rocks. Confining pressure and freeze–thaw cycles can transfer the rock’s failure mode from tensile to shear and make red sandstone show more ductility features.

Bigotte; Adelino Ferreira; Alvin Mejia; Emma Ferranti;Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has affected human mobility via lockdowns, social distancing rules, home quarantines, and the full or partial suspension of transportation. Evidence-based policy recommendations are urgently needed to ensure that transport systems have resilience to future pandemic outbreaks, particularly within Global South megacities where demand for public transport is high and reduced access can exacerbate socio-economic inequalities. This study focuses on Metro Manila – a characteristic megacity that experienced one of the most stringent lockdowns worldwide. It analyzes aggregated cell phone and GPS data from Google and Apple that provide a comprehensive representation of mobility behavior before and during the lockdown. While significant decreases are observed for all transport modes, public transport experienced the largest drop (−74.5 %, on average). The study demonstrates that: (i) those most reliant on public transport were disproportionately affected by lockdowns; (ii) public transport was unable to fulfil its role as public service; and, (iii) this drove a paradigm shift towards active mobility. Moving forwards, in the short-term policymakers must promote active mobility and prioritize public transport to reduce unequal access to transport. Longer-term, policymakers must leverage the increased active transport to encourage modal shift via infrastructure investment, and better utilize big data to support decision-making.

This article explores the potential of community-led housing (CLH) in combatting loneliness, and represents a mixed-methods research project carried out from just before the beginning of the pandemic, through 2020. Methods comprised a nationwide quantitative online survey of members of CLH groups (N = 221 respondents from England and Wales), followed by five case studies of communities representing a range of different CLH models. This qualitative element comprised participant observation, and semi-structured interviews at each group. The article also considers data from a smaller research project carried out by the same team in July 2020, that aimed to capture the experience of the pandemic for CLH groups, and comprising an online questionnaire followed by 18 semi-structured interviews. We conclude that members of CLH projects are measurably less lonely than those with comparable levels of social connection in wider society, and that such benefits are achieved through combinations of multiple different elements that include physical design, social design and through social processes. Notably, not all aspects of communities that contribute positively are a result of explicit intentionality, albeit the concept is considered key to at least one of the models.

This paper examines OpenStreetMap data quality at different stages of a participatory mapping process in seven slums in Africa and Asia. Data were drawn from an OpenStreetMap-based participatory mapping process developed as part of a research project focusing on understanding inequalities in healthcare access of slum residents in the Global South. Descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis were employed to examine the following research question: What is the spatial data quality of collaborative remote mapping achieved by volunteer mappers in morphologically complex urban areas? Findings show that the completeness achieved by remote mapping largely depends on the morphology and characteristics of slums such as building density and rooftop architecture, varying from 84% in the best case, to zero in the most difficult site. The major scientific contribution of this study is to provide evidence on the spatial data quality of remotely mapped data through volunteer mapping efforts in morphologically complex urban areas such as slums the results could provide insights into how much fieldwork would be needed in what level of complexity and to what extent the involvement of local volunteers in these efforts is required.

Squid play a major role in the Southern Ocean food web. However, their age and growth remain poorly studied. Here, using upper and lower beaks of Moroteuthopsis longimana collected from the diet of Dissostichus mawsoni from Pacific and Atlantic sectors of the Southern Ocean, we studied: (1) Feasibility of using beaks collected from predators’ stomachs to study the age of Southern Ocean oceanic squid; and (2) Age estimation and growth patterns of M. longimana. The rostrum sagittal section (RSS) of both beaks had micro-increments, with the lower beak being the best to observe and count a readable sequence of increments to estimate the age. Assuming a daily deposition of increments, our results suggest that M. longimana can live up to 820 days and may hatch throughout the year. Studied individuals presented a consistent growth rate from hatching to death but with, at least, one period of faster growth. A novel pattern of regular cycles, composed of 7–10 lighter increments followed by a darker one, was found in the medium-anterior region of the RSS. Differences were found in the growth rate and size reached at the same age between individuals from the Pacific and Atlantic sectors, which might be related with different environmental conditions between both capture sites. This study shows that lower beaks from predators’ stomachs can be used to study the age of Southern Ocean squids and that M. longimana hatches in all seasons, being available year round to predators that feed of this species. Limited access to clean energy has long been an obstacle to livelihood improvement of populations mired in energy poverty. Cooking with traditional biomass contributes to high levels of indoor air pollution, thus imposing significant threats to public health. Due to the accessibility and affordability of clean fuels for rural residents, this study proposes that renewable solar energy be employed to supply power for induction cooking stoves (ICS) through solar home systems (SHS), and estimates both the costs and health benefits of upgrading to ICS and SHS in lower-middle-income countries (LMCs) in Southeast Asia. Disability-Adjusted Life Years and the value of a statistical life year were employed to estimate the health benefits of ICS-SHS. The results suggest that the health benefits brought by ICS-SHS alone can surpass the estimated minimum cost for an ICS-SHS in the six LMCs in Southeast Asia. This study provides a potential reference for getting other energy poverty regions involved with affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy, as well as simultaneously tackling indoor air pollution caused by cooking.

-(pyridine-2,6-diylbis (5-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3,1-diyl))diacetate (L), has been synthesised, and three coordination complexes, namely, [Zn(L)2](BF4)2 (1), [MnLCl2] (2) and [CdLCl2] (3) have been obtained. All ligands and complexes were characterised by IR, mass spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single crystal X-ray diffraction experiment revealed that the primary supramolecular building block of 1 is a hexagonal chair shaped 0D hydrogen bonded synthon (stabilised by C&ndash H∙∙∙Cl interactions, which are further self-assembled into a 3,4-c network structure, and 3 showed a 2D hydrogen bonded sheet structure. The supramolecular structural diversity in these complexes is due to the different conformations adopted by the ligands, which are mainly induced by different metal ions with coordination environments controlled by different anions. Hirshfeld surface analysis was explored for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the supramolecular interactions. H∙∙∙F interactions. Abstract This paper explores the effects of cooperation between rail and air infrastructures in setting per-passenger fees prior to competition among airlines and high-speed rail (HSR) in a transport network. It is shown that, for a sufficiently low degree of substitution, cooperation results in lower fees and greater HSR traffic than under competition. Besides, it leads to more connecting passengers. An empirical application allows for a quantitative assessment of cooperation. Gains to passengers and operators are sizeable when cooperation either involves all infrastructure managers or the rail and the hub airport managers. Welfare gains are in the range of 10.4–11.1%. Our contribution offers an ex-ante analysis about the benefits of intermodal cooperation at the upstream level.

Power grid parameter estimation involves the estimation of unknown parameters, such as the inertia and damping coefficients, from the observed dynamics. In this work, we present physics-informed machine learning algorithms for the power system parameter estimation problem. First, we propose a novel algorithm to solve the parameter estimation based on the Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy) approach, which uses sparse regression to infer the parameters that best describe the observed data. We then compare its performance against another benchmark algorithm, namely, the physics-informed neural networks (PINN) approach applied to parameter estimation. We perform extensive simulations on IEEE bus systems to examine the performance of the aforementioned algorithms. Our results show that the SINDy algorithm outperforms the PINN algorithm in estimating the power grid parameters over a wide range of system parameters (including high and low inertia systems) and power grid architectures. Particularly, in case of the slow dynamics system, the proposed SINDy algorithms outperforms the PINN algorithm, which struggles to accurately determine the parameters. Moreover, it is extremely efficient computationally and so takes significantly less time than the PINN algorithm, thus making it suitable for real-time parameter estimation. Furthermore, we present an extension of the SINDy algorithm to a scenario where the operator does not have the exact knowledge of the underlying system model. We also present a decentralised implementation of the SINDy algorithm which only requires limited information exchange between the neighbouring nodes of a power grid.

Freeze–thaw cycles can cause frost heaving pressure in the rock matrix and result in micro cracking, which influences its physical and mechanical properties. A series of physical and mechanical tests are performed on red sandstone to investigate the fracture behavior and mechanical properties induced by freeze–thaw cycles. The testing results show that after being treated by freeze–thaw cycles, the mass, density, and P-wave velocity of rocks decrease, while the volume of rocks increases. The peak stress and elastic modulus decrease with the increase in freeze–thaw cycles, while peak strain and Poisson’s rate increase. When 30 MPa confining pressure is applied, the peak stress and elastic modulus of untreated samples reach the maximum values of 92.49 MPa and 12.84 GPa, respectively. However, after being treated by 30 freeze–thaw cycles, the peak strain and Poisson’s rate reach the maximum values of 0.631 % and 0.18, respectively. The development of micro-cracks and the growth of pores induced by frost heaving stress are the main reasons for the deterioration of the mechanical properties of rocks. Confining pressure and freeze–thaw cycles can transfer the rock’s failure mode from tensile to shear and make red sandstone show more ductility features.

Bigotte; Adelino Ferreira; Alvin Mejia; Emma Ferranti;Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has affected human mobility via lockdowns, social distancing rules, home quarantines, and the full or partial suspension of transportation. Evidence-based policy recommendations are urgently needed to ensure that transport systems have resilience to future pandemic outbreaks, particularly within Global South megacities where demand for public transport is high and reduced access can exacerbate socio-economic inequalities. This study focuses on Metro Manila – a characteristic megacity that experienced one of the most stringent lockdowns worldwide. It analyzes aggregated cell phone and GPS data from Google and Apple that provide a comprehensive representation of mobility behavior before and during the lockdown. While significant decreases are observed for all transport modes, public transport experienced the largest drop (−74.5 %, on average). The study demonstrates that: (i) those most reliant on public transport were disproportionately affected by lockdowns; (ii) public transport was unable to fulfil its role as public service; and, (iii) this drove a paradigm shift towards active mobility. Moving forwards, in the short-term policymakers must promote active mobility and prioritize public transport to reduce unequal access to transport. Longer-term, policymakers must leverage the increased active transport to encourage modal shift via infrastructure investment, and better utilize big data to support decision-making.

This article explores the potential of community-led housing (CLH) in combatting loneliness, and represents a mixed-methods research project carried out from just before the beginning of the pandemic, through 2020. Methods comprised a nationwide quantitative online survey of members of CLH groups (N = 221 respondents from England and Wales), followed by five case studies of communities representing a range of different CLH models. This qualitative element comprised participant observation, and semi-structured interviews at each group. The article also considers data from a smaller research project carried out by the same team in July 2020, that aimed to capture the experience of the pandemic for CLH groups, and comprising an online questionnaire followed by 18 semi-structured interviews. We conclude that members of CLH projects are measurably less lonely than those with comparable levels of social connection in wider society, and that such benefits are achieved through combinations of multiple different elements that include physical design, social design and through social processes. Notably, not all aspects of communities that contribute positively are a result of explicit intentionality, albeit the concept is considered key to at least one of the models.

This paper examines OpenStreetMap data quality at different stages of a participatory mapping process in seven slums in Africa and Asia. Data were drawn from an OpenStreetMap-based participatory mapping process developed as part of a research project focusing on understanding inequalities in healthcare access of slum residents in the Global South. Descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis were employed to examine the following research question: What is the spatial data quality of collaborative remote mapping achieved by volunteer mappers in morphologically complex urban areas? Findings show that the completeness achieved by remote mapping largely depends on the morphology and characteristics of slums such as building density and rooftop architecture, varying from 84% in the best case, to zero in the most difficult site. The major scientific contribution of this study is to provide evidence on the spatial data quality of remotely mapped data through volunteer mapping efforts in morphologically complex urban areas such as slums the results could provide insights into how much fieldwork would be needed in what level of complexity and to what extent the involvement of local volunteers in these efforts is required.

Squid play a major role in the Southern Ocean food web. However, their age and growth remain poorly studied. Here, using upper and lower beaks of Moroteuthopsis longimana collected from the diet of Dissostichus mawsoni from Pacific and Atlantic sectors of the Southern Ocean, we studied: (1) Feasibility of using beaks collected from predators’ stomachs to study the age of Southern Ocean oceanic squid; and (2) Age estimation and growth patterns of M. longimana. The rostrum sagittal section (RSS) of both beaks had micro-increments, with the lower beak being the best to observe and count a readable sequence of increments to estimate the age. Assuming a daily deposition of increments, our results suggest that M. longimana can live up to 820 days and may hatch throughout the year. Studied individuals presented a consistent growth rate from hatching to death but with, at least, one period of faster growth. A novel pattern of regular cycles, composed of 7–10 lighter increments followed by a darker one, was found in the medium-anterior region of the RSS. Differences were found in the growth rate and size reached at the same age between individuals from the Pacific and Atlantic sectors, which might be related with different environmental conditions between both capture sites. This study shows that lower beaks from predators’ stomachs can be used to study the age of Southern Ocean squids and that M. longimana hatches in all seasons, being available year round to predators that feed of this species. Limited access to clean energy has long been an obstacle to livelihood improvement of populations mired in energy poverty. Cooking with traditional biomass contributes to high levels of indoor air pollution, thus imposing significant threats to public health. Due to the accessibility and affordability of clean fuels for rural residents, this study proposes that renewable solar energy be employed to supply power for induction cooking stoves (ICS) through solar home systems (SHS), and estimates both the costs and health benefits of upgrading to ICS and SHS in lower-middle-income countries (LMCs) in Southeast Asia. Disability-Adjusted Life Years and the value of a statistical life year were employed to estimate the health benefits of ICS-SHS. The results suggest that the health benefits brought by ICS-SHS alone can surpass the estimated minimum cost for an ICS-SHS in the six LMCs in Southeast Asia. This study provides a potential reference for getting other energy poverty regions involved with affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy, as well as simultaneously tackling indoor air pollution caused by cooking.

-(pyridine-2,6-diylbis (5-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3,1-diyl))diacetate (L), has been synthesised, and three coordination complexes, namely, [Zn(L)2](BF4)2 (1), [MnLCl2] (2) and [CdLCl2] (3) have been obtained. All ligands and complexes were characterised by IR, mass spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single crystal X-ray diffraction experiment revealed that the primary supramolecular building block of 1 is a hexagonal chair shaped 0D hydrogen bonded synthon (stabilised by C&ndash H∙∙∙Cl interactions, which are further self-assembled into a 3,4-c network structure, and 3 showed a 2D hydrogen bonded sheet structure. The supramolecular structural diversity in these complexes is due to the different conformations adopted by the ligands, which are mainly induced by different metal ions with coordination environments controlled by different anions. Hirshfeld surface analysis was explored for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the supramolecular interactions. H∙∙∙F interactions. Abstract This paper explores the effects of cooperation between rail and air infrastructures in setting per-passenger fees prior to competition among airlines and high-speed rail (HSR) in a transport network. It is shown that, for a sufficiently low degree of substitution, cooperation results in lower fees and greater HSR traffic than under competition. Besides, it leads to more connecting passengers. An empirical application allows for a quantitative assessment of cooperation. Gains to passengers and operators are sizeable when cooperation either involves all infrastructure managers or the rail and the hub airport managers. Welfare gains are in the range of 10.4–11.1%. Our contribution offers an ex-ante analysis about the benefits of intermodal cooperation at the upstream level.

Power grid parameter estimation involves the estimation of unknown parameters, such as the inertia and damping coefficients, from the observed dynamics. In this work, we present physics-informed machine learning algorithms for the power system parameter estimation problem. First, we propose a novel algorithm to solve the parameter estimation based on the Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy) approach, which uses sparse regression to infer the parameters that best describe the observed data. We then compare its performance against another benchmark algorithm, namely, the physics-informed neural networks (PINN) approach applied to parameter estimation. We perform extensive simulations on IEEE bus systems to examine the performance of the aforementioned algorithms. Our results show that the SINDy algorithm outperforms the PINN algorithm in estimating the power grid parameters over a wide range of system parameters (including high and low inertia systems) and power grid architectures. Particularly, in case of the slow dynamics system, the proposed SINDy algorithms outperforms the PINN algorithm, which struggles to accurately determine the parameters. Moreover, it is extremely efficient computationally and so takes significantly less time than the PINN algorithm, thus making it suitable for real-time parameter estimation. Furthermore, we present an extension of the SINDy algorithm to a scenario where the operator does not have the exact knowledge of the underlying system model. We also present a decentralised implementation of the SINDy algorithm which only requires limited information exchange between the neighbouring nodes of a power grid.
