    The diversity and distribution of polychaetes in the coastal area and the EEZ of the Republic of Cyprus is presented based on both the literature records and new data acquired in a wide range of environmental monitoring programmes and research projects. A total of 585 polychaete species belonging to 49 families were reported in Cyprus waters; among them, 205 species (34%) were recorded based on the literature only, 149 (26%) were new records based on our own data, and a total of 231 spp. (40%) were recorded from both the literature and new data. A total of 51 polychaete species were identified as non-indigenous; among them, 32 were confirmed as alien species, 4 were considered cryptogenic, and 15 were considered questionable as there were doubts about their identity. The Indo-Pacific Schistomeringos loveni was reported for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea, while four species already reported in the literature, namely, Bispira melanostigma, Fimbriosthenelais longipinnis Leonnates aylaoberi, and Rhodopsis pusilla, were added to the list of non-indigenous polychaetes in the Mediterranean Sea. The current work highlights the importance of implementing environmental monitoring programmes and carrying out research surveys targeting benthic macrofauna assemblages.

    In today’s digital age, mobile applications have become invaluable tools for enhancing accessibility and inclusivity, especially for individuals with disabilities. This study focuses on the landscape of accessibility apps designed to facilitate inclusivity for disabled individuals in buildings. By investigating current trends, strengths, weaknesses, and their impact on independence and quality of life, the research aims to shed light on the state of these apps and identify areas for future development. To achieve these objectives, a multi-faceted approach was employed, encompassing a literature review and app categorization. The study emphasizes the necessity for a common evaluation and certification framework to ensure consistency, reliability, and transparency in assessing the effectiveness of accessibility apps in the built environment. Such a framework would instill user trust, support informed decision-making, and stimulate innovation in this field. The findings of this research contribute to the advancement of inclusive design practices, serving as a valuable resource for developers, policymakers, and disabled individuals seeking effective tools to enhance accessibility. By fostering an inclusive society where disabled individuals can fully navigate and participate, this study aligns with the broader goal of creating a more inclusive and equitable world.

    Authors: León Gaixas, Sergio;

    Con un número cada vez mayor de dispositivos y aplicaciones distribuidas, se está volviendo evidente que el servicio best-effort ofrecido por la actual Internet TCP/IP no satisface los requisitos de calidad de servicio (QoS) de las aplicaciones. No solo eso, sino que el alcance global de la capa de IP se convierte en la causa de grandes problemas de escalabilidad, requiriendo costes cada vez más altos para ser resueltos. Desde la implantación de TCP/IP, han aparecido múltiples soluciones que tienen como objetivo superar las limitaciones del modelo (BGP, NAT, LISP, etc.). Aun así, todas estas soluciones terminan restringidas por el mismo modelo de red que intentan mejorar. Dado esto, la mayoría de las soluciones terminan simplemente rompiendo y parcheando la pila misma de TCP/IP. Con el objetivo de resolver esos problemas, la Recursive InterNetwork Architecture (RINA) propone una nueva arquitectura de Internet que vuelve a las raíces de la comunicación en red. En lugar de parchear la pila actual de TCP/IP, RINA propone una pila de red recursiva con enfoque en la comunicación entre procesos, donde cada capa, llamada Distributed IPC Facility (DIF), realiza el mismo conjunto de tareas. Mientras realizan las mismas tareas, las DIF de RINA son completamente configurables por medio de políticas programables, definiciones de cómo realizar tales tareas. Además, RINA brinda soporte completo para servicios de QoS por medio de los Cubos QoS, o clases de QoS que definen las capacidades de cada DIF. Con el uso de los Cubos QoS, RINA es capaz de proporcionar una forma estandarizada de expresar las capacidades de cada capa. Además, dada esa información, RINA también permite que las aplicaciones y los procesos de capas superiores expresen sus requisitos de QoS en términos de latencia aceptada, pérdidas, uso promedio, etc. Las contribuciones en esta tesis sacan provecho de la pila recursiva de RINA y el uso de políticas para proponer y analizar soluciones, antiguas y nuevas, para QoS y escalabilidad, que no serán compatibles con la Internet TCP/IP actual. En términos de mejoras de los servicios de QoS, el trabajo en esta tesis aprovecha la información sobre los requisitos de flujo, proporcionados por las propias aplicaciones, para mejorar las garantías de QoS proporcionadas por la red. Propone el uso de políticas basadas en △Q, proporcionando garantías de QoS mejoradas, que coinciden mejor con los requisitos de los flujos. A diferencia de las soluciones de diferenciación de QoS más simples, donde los servicios de QoS se proporcionan en orden de prioridad, △Q pretende proporcionar un servicio “suficientemente bueno" para todos los flujos en la red, lo que resulta en una repartición de recursos más apropiada. En este trabajo, estas políticas se han probado en redes tipo backbone, que muestran mejoras interesantes con respecto a las soluciones comunes de diferenciación de QoS, como las VPN basadas en MPLS. Además del uso de las políticas de △Q en el núcleo de la red, esta tesis también considera el suministro de servicios de QoS a los usuarios finales, siendo ese el objetivo final de las redes. Para permitir eso, se requiere imponer algunos límites a lo que los usuarios finales pueden enviar a la red, con el fin de limitar la cantidad de tráfico prioritario que usuarios codiciosos puedan enviar. En ese sentido, aunque imponer límites de velocidad estrictos por QoS sería trivial en RINA, también se explora una nueva política de limitación de tasas basada en △Q que pretende limitar la cantidad de tráfico prioritario de una manera más beneficiosa para los usuarios. En términos de escalabilidad, esta tesis también considera diferentes medidas para mejorar el reenvío y el enrutamiento dentro de redes de gran escala. Primero, en cuanto al uso de políticas que podrán beneficiarse de topologías de red específicas, se propone una nueva política de forwarding que combina reglas topológicas, es decir decisiones basadas en la ubicación de nodos, y excepciones, es decir entradas que sobrescriben reglas en caso de error. Con esta política, las costosas búsquedas en tablas grandes se reemplazan con reglas de rápidas y simples basadas en la ubicación de los nodos y su vecindad. Dadas las topologías específicas más comúnmente utilizadas en los grandes centros de datos hoy en día, se encuentra que el uso de la política propuesta es la combinación perfecta para esos escenarios. Pruebas en varias topologías comunes para centros de datos mostraron mejoras claras, que requieren solo una pequeña fracción de toda la información sobre la red, a pesar del gran tamaño de dichas redes, dependiendo esta de la cantidad de fallas concurrentes en la red y no del tamaño de la misma. Además, esta tesis también considera el uso de políticas de enrutamiento topológico para poblar tales excepciones en caso de fallas. El uso de soluciones de enrutamiento topológico dio como resultado la reducción de la complejidad en el cálculo de rutas, junto con un menor número de mensajes de enrutamiento. Además de las soluciones topológicas, también se investiga el uso de otra solución de enrutamiento, no adecuada para el entorno de IP. Específicamente, se muestra como una solución de enrutamiento Landmark, una solución de enrutamiento de la familia de enrutamiento compacto, podría implementarse dentro de RINA. Finalmente, también se dedican esfuerzos a analizar la importancia de la selección de rutas para garantizar los requisitos de QoS y como no se requiere llegar a soluciones extremas, como el uso de conexiones, para proporcionar los servicios requeridos. With an increasing number of devices and heterogeneous distributed applications, it is becoming evident that service delivered by the current Internet fall short to supply the actual Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of applications. In addition, the global scope of the IP layer causes large scalability problems on the network. Multiple solutions aim to overcome the limitations of the model (BGP, NAT, etc.), but all end being constrained by the same networking model that they try to improve, ending simply breaking and patching the stack itself of TCP/IP. In contrast, RINA proposes a new clean-slate Internet architecture based on a recursive networking stack with focus on inter process communication, where each layer, or DIF, performs the same set of tasks. DIFs are fully configurable by mean of programmable policies, and provide complete support for QoS services. RINA is capable to provide a standardized way to express the capabilities of each layer, the QoS Cubes. With those, RINA allows for applications and upper processes to express their requirements in terms of latency, losses, etc. The contributions in this thesis take profit from the recursive stack of RINA and the use of policies to propose and analyse old and new solutions which would not be compatible with the current TCP/IP Internet. Improving the QoS services, this work takes profit from the information on requirements provided by the applications themselves to improve the assurance of QoS. With the use of Q-based scheduling policies, improved QoS assurances are provided, aiming to provide “good enough” service for all flows in the network, resulting in a more appropriate sharing of resources. These policies have been tested in backbone-like networks, showing interesting improvements with respect to commonly used solutions like MPLS-based VPNs. In addition the provisioning of QoS services to end-users is also considered. In order to allow that, it is required to impose some limits on what end-users can send to the network, limiting the amount of priority traffic that potentially greedy users can send. In that regard, while enforcing strict rate-limits per QoS would be trivial in RINA, a new △Q-based rate-limiting policy that aims to limit the amount of priority traffic in a more user-friendly way is also explored. In terms of scalability, this work also considers different measures to improve forwarding and routing within large-scale networks. As for the use of policies that could profit from specific network topologies, a new forwarding policy, that mix both topological rules and exceptions, is proposed. With this policy, forwarding table lookups in large tables are replaced with fast and simple forwarding rules based on the location of nodes and their neighbourhood. Given the common topologies used in large data centres, the proposed policy is found to be a perfect match for those scenarios. Test for different data centre topology showed clear improvements, requiring only a small fraction of all forwarding information despite the large size of such networks, depending that in the number of concurrent failures in the network rather than on the size of it. In addition, this work also considers the use of topological routing policies to populate exceptions upon failures. The use of topological routing solutions resulted in reduced complexity for computing paths and less routing messages. In addition to topological solutions, the use other routing solution, not well suited for the IP environment are also investigated. Specifically, it is shown how a Landmark routing solution could be implemented within RINA. Finally, efforts are also devoted to analyse the importance of path selection for ensuring QoS requirements and how it is not required to reach extremes solutions, like the use of connections, to provide the required services.

    Simple Summary Questions on how features of aquatic invertebrates (e.g., size, feeding style, respiration mode) evolve along a gradient of flow velocity, turbidity and elevation are rarely addressed. Furthermore, another outstanding question is what is the environmental condition in which an abrupt change occurs in terms of the compositions and abundance of these organisms' features. To answer the previous questions, we collected macroinvertebrates and measured the flow velocity, turbidity and elevation in the streams of the Guayas basin (Ecuador); subsequently, we analyzed the data. We observed that the abundance of most organisms' features increased with increasing flow velocity, while they decreased with increasing turbidity. Furthermore, there was a substantial drop in the abundance of tegument-respiring invertebrates beyond the turbidity of 5 NTU and an abrupt decline in the diversity of the organisms' features below 22 m above sea level, implying the need to focus water management in these altitudinal regions. Our results suggest that there is a need to implement measures that minimize erosion to alleviate turbidity that affects these organisms. The findings of our study provide a basis to determine critical targets for aquatic ecosystem management. Although the trait concept is increasingly used in research, quantitative relations that can support in determining ecological tipping points and serve as a basis for environmental standards are lacking. This study determines changes in trait abundance along a gradient of flow velocity, turbidity and elevation, and develops trait-response curves, which facilitate the identification of ecological tipping points. Aquatic macroinvertebrates and abiotic conditions were determined at 88 different locations in the streams of the Guayas basin. After trait information collection, a set of trait diversity metrics were calculated. Negative binomial regression and linear regression were applied to relate the abundance of each trait and trait diversity metrics, respectively, to flow velocity, turbidity and elevation. Tipping points for each environmental variable in relation to traits were identified using the segmented regression method. The abundance of most traits increased with increasing velocity, while they decreased with increasing turbidity. The negative binomial regression models revealed that from a flow velocity higher than 0.5 m/s, a substantial increase in abundance occurs for several traits, and this is even more substantially noticed at values higher than 1 m/s. Furthermore, significant tipping points were also identified for elevation, wherein an abrupt decline in trait richness was observed below 22 m a.s.l., implying the need to focus water management in these altitudinal regions. Turbidity is potentially caused by erosion; thus, measures that can reduce or limit erosion within the basin should be implemented. Our findings suggest that measures mitigating the issues related to turbidity and flow velocity may lead to better aquatic ecosystem functioning. This quantitative information related to flow velocity might serve as a good basis to determine ecological flow requirements and illustrates the major impacts that hydropower dams can have in fast-running river systems. These quantitative relations between invertebrate traits and environmental conditions, as well as related tipping points, provide a basis to determine critical targets for aquatic ecosystem management, achieve improved ecosystem functioning and warrant trait diversity. This research was performed in the context of the VLIR Ecuador Biodiversity Network project. This project was funded by the Vlaamse Interuniversitaire Raad—Universitaire Ontwikkel-ingssamenwerking (VLIR-UOS), which supports partnerships between universities and university colleges in Flanders and the South.

    AbstractThermokarst lagoons represent the transition state from a freshwater lacustrine to a marine environment, and receive little attention regarding their role for greenhouse gas production and release in Arctic permafrost landscapes. We studied the fate of methane (CH4) in sediments of a thermokarst lagoon in comparison to two thermokarst lakes on the Bykovsky Peninsula in northeastern Siberia through the analysis of sediment CH4 concentrations and isotopic signature, methane‐cycling microbial taxa, sediment geochemistry, lipid biomarkers, and network analysis. We assessed how differences in geochemistry between thermokarst lakes and thermokarst lagoons, caused by the infiltration of sulfate‐rich marine water, altered the microbial methane‐cycling community. Anaerobic sulfate‐reducing ANME‐2a/2b methanotrophs dominated the sulfate‐rich sediments of the lagoon despite its known seasonal alternation between brackish and freshwater inflow and low sulfate concentrations compared to the usual marine ANME habitat. Non‐competitive methylotrophic methanogens dominated the methanogenic community of the lakes and the lagoon, independent of differences in porewater chemistry and depth. This potentially contributed to the high CH4 concentrations observed in all sulfate‐poor sediments. CH4 concentrations in the freshwater‐influenced sediments averaged 1.34 ± 0.98 μmol g−1, with highly depleted δ13C‐CH4 values ranging from −89‰ to −70‰. In contrast, the sulfate‐affected upper 300 cm of the lagoon exhibited low average CH4 concentrations of 0.011 ± 0.005 μmol g−1 with comparatively enriched δ13C‐CH4 values of −54‰ to −37‰ pointing to substantial methane oxidation. Our study shows that lagoon formation specifically supports methane oxidizers and methane oxidation through changes in pore water chemistry, especially sulfate, while methanogens are similar to lake conditions.

    AbstractMutations in the mitochondrial or nuclear genomes are associated with a diverse group of human disorders characterized by impaired mitochondrial respiration. Within this group, an increasing number of mutations have been identified in nuclear genes involved in mitochondrial RNA biology. The TEFM gene encodes the mitochondrial transcription elongation factor responsible for enhancing the processivity of mitochondrial RNA polymerase, POLRMT. We report for the first time that TEFM variants are associated with mitochondrial respiratory chain deficiency and a wide range of clinical presentations including mitochondrial myopathy with a treatable neuromuscular transmission defect. Mechanistically, we show muscle and primary fibroblasts from the affected individuals have reduced levels of promoter distal mitochondrial RNA transcripts. Finally, tefm knockdown in zebrafish embryos resulted in neuromuscular junction abnormalities and abnormal mitochondrial function, strengthening the genotype-phenotype correlation. Our study highlights that TEFM regulates mitochondrial transcription elongation and its defect results in variable, tissue-specific neurological and neuromuscular symptoms. T.C. was funded by the Czech Science Foundation (GA17-07378 S). Open Access funding enabled and organized by Projekt DEAL. [Aim]: Theoretical, experimental and observational studies have shown that biodiversity–ecosystem functioning (BEF) relationships are influenced by functional community structure through two mutually non-exclusive mechanisms: (1) the dominance effect (which relates to the traits of the dominant species); and (2) the niche partitioning effect [which relates to functional diversity (FD)]. Although both mechanisms have been studied in plant communities and experiments at small spatial extents, it remains unclear whether evidence from small-extent case studies translates into a generalizable macroecological pattern. Here, we evaluate dominance and niche partitioning effects simultaneously in grassland systems world-wide. [Location]: Two thousand nine hundred and forty-one grassland plots globally. [Time period]: 2000–2014. Major taxa studied. Vascular plants. [Methods]: We obtained plot-based data on functional community structure from the global vegetation plot database “sPlot”, which combines species composition with plant trait data from the “TRY” database. We used data on the community-weighted mean (CWM) and FD for 18 ecologically relevant plant traits. As an indicator of primary productivity, we extracted the satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from MODIS. Using generalized additive models and deviation partitioning, we estimated the contributions of trait CWM and FD to the variation in annual maximum NDVI, while controlling for climatic variables and spatial structure. [Results]: Grassland communities dominated by relatively tall species with acquisitive traits had higher NDVI values, suggesting the prevalence of dominance effects for BEF relationships. We found no support for niche partitioning for the functional traits analysed, because NDVI remained unaffected by FD. Most of the predictive power of traits was shared by climatic predictors and spatial coordinates. This highlights the importance of community assembly processes for BEF relationships in natural communities. Main conclusions Our analysis provides empirical evidence that plant functional community structure and global patterns in primary productivity are linked through the resource economics and size traits of the dominant species. This is an important test of the hypotheses underlying BEF relationships at the global scale.

    CONTEXT: Digital technologies nowadays play a major role in innovation within the agri-food domain. The evolution of IT systems has currently arrived at a level that involves complex systems integration and business ecosystems in which many stakeholders in different roles are involved. A new paradigm for digital innovation is needed that copes with this increased complexity. OBJECTIVE: This paper presents an empirically informed framework for analysing and designing viable, sustainable digital innovation ecosystems in the agri-food domain. METHODS: The research is based on a series of European large-scale public-private innovation projects from 2011 to 2021 with a total budget of 73 M€. They involved hundreds of stakeholders that were developing a large number of digital solutions through which a digital innovation ecosystem for agri-food was formed. In a longitudinal study, a conceptual framework was used to analyse these projects and describe how the digital innovation ecosystem has developed. Lessons learnt are translated into a number of design principles and an organizational approach to foster digital innovation ecosystems in agri-food. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The conceptual framework consists of 6 key concepts: (i) innovation strategy, (ii) innovation organization, (iii) innovation network that contains (iv) the innovation process and (v) the innovation object and finally (vi) an innovation infrastructure. Along these 6 concepts, lessons learnt and in total 21 design principles are derived from analysing the projects forming a basis for the organizational framework. At the core of this framework is a lean multi-actor approach to trials and use case development interacting with a set of multidisciplinary activities: (i) developing a common technical collaboration infrastructure, (ii) identifying value streams with user engagement, (iii) engaging the right partners and stakeholders at the right time supported by strategic project planning and dynamic management. The most important conclusion is that effective, successful and quick use of appropriate IT in agri-food requires that actors should not be analysed in isolation from both their technological and business environment. Another consequence is that a ‘minimal viable ecosystem’ only emerges after considerable time, resources and ingenuity is invested and may require outside (government) intervention. SIGNIFICANCE: Results from this paper can be used both by public and private stakeholders to diagnose and improve digital innovation projects and develop viable, sustainable digital innovation ecosystems in agri-food.

    Aim: Theoretical, experimental and observational studies have shown that biodiversity–ecosystem functioning (BEF) relationships are influenced by functional community structure through two mutually non-exclusive mechanisms: (1) the dominance effect (which relates to the traits of the dominant species); and (2) the niche partitioning effect [which relates to functional diversity (FD)]. Location: Two thousand nine hundred and forty-one grassland plots globally. Time period: 2000–2014. Major taxa studied: Vascular plants. Methods: We obtained plot-based data on functional community structure from the global vegetation plot database “sPlot”, which combines species composition with plant trait data from the “TRY” database. Results: Grassland communities dominated by relatively tall species with acquisitive traits had higher NDVI values, suggesting the prevalence of dominance effects for BEF relationships. We found no support for niche partitioning for the functional traits analysed, because NDVI remained unaffected by FD. Most of the predictive power of traits was shared by climatic predictors and spatial coordinates. This highlights the importance of community assembly processes for BEF relationships in natural communities. Main conclusions: Our analysis provides empirical evidence that plant functional community structure and global patterns in primary productivity are linked through the resource economics and size traits of the dominant species. This is an important test of the hypotheses underlying BEF relationships at the global scale.

    International audience; Climate change has repeatedly been shown to impact the demography and survival ofmarine top predators. However, most evidence comes from single populations of widely distributed species, limited mainly to polar and subpolar environments. Here, we aimed to evaluate the influence of environmental conditions on the survival of a tropical and migratory seabird over the course of its annual cycle.We used capture-mark-recapture data fromthree populations of Bulwer's petrel (Bulweria bulwerii) spread across the NE Atlantic Ocean, from the Azores, Canary, and Cabo Verde Islands (including temperate to tropical zones). We also inferred how the survival of this seabird might be affected under different climatic scenarios, defined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Among the environmental variables whose effect we evaluated (North Atlantic Oscillation index, Southern Oscillation Index, Sea Surface Temperature [SST] and wind speed), SST estimated for the breeding area and season was the variable with the greatest influence on adult survival. Negative effects of SST increase emerged across the three populations,most likely through indirect trophicweb interactions. Unfortunately, our study also shows that the survival of Bulwer's petrel will be profoundly affected by the different scenarios of climate change, even with the most optimistic trajectory involving the lowest greenhouse gas emission. Furthermore, for the first time, our study predicts stronger impacts of climate change on tropical populations than on subtropical and temperate ones. This result highlights the devastating effect that climate changemay also have on tropical areas, and the importance of considering multi-population approaches when evaluating its impacts which may differ across species distributions.

    Authors: León Gaixas, Sergio;
