description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Conference object 2022 FrancePublisher:OpenEdition Funded by:EC | Locus LudiEC| Locus LudiAuthors: Alexandra Attia;Alexandra Attia;La céramique attique à figures rouges offre un large répertoire de scènes impliquant des jeunes gens attachés à différentes activités. Attic red-figure vases present a wide range of generic scenes involving young people engaged in various activities. The evocative presence of numerous elements, handled or placed in the field of the image, contributes to the elaboration of an allusive, metaphorical or symbolic discourse. The meanings of these representations, shared by the painters and their addressees, are intrinsically linked to the iconographical context, to the vase shape and to the functions attached to these craft-productions. This paper proposes to re-examine the enigmatic presence of a cruciform element depicted on about a hundred vases, mainly Attic red-figure vases produced between 500 and 420 BC. Associated with different types of scenes (e.g. school scenes, palestra, discussion between young men, musical or domestic scenes), often placed in the background as an accessory element, it is handled on very rare occasions by figures, without distinction of gender. We will have a look at the various hypotheses previously put forward concerning this equivocal iconographic sign, which seems to be able PALLAS, 119, 2022, pp. 511-526 to embody the polysemy of visual language in Classical Athens, by questioning its playful implication in a preferential manner

This article explores the relationship between ovoo construction and the parallel political recognition of Buryat refugees in Hulun Buir (Inner Mongolia). More precisely, it analyses how these sacred cairns and their annual rituals have served as symbols of Buryat territorial appropriation throughout the 20th century. Considering the ovoo as a support for local history, the article illustrates the way ovoo construction links territory, politics and identity in this multi-ethnic area.

The new attempts to implement green transformations of the economy aimed at sustainability coexist with the passage from the Fordist to the post-Fordist era, contributing to create profound territorial transformations throughout the world. Although the current economic crisis is slowing the process of energy transition at the global level, the definition of the future economic structure of territories will be strictly connected to the spatial effects of energy transitions and their intensive land use processes, given the low-power nature of renewable energy sources. Urban centres are the places where these changes are reflected most quickly and clearly, being the centres of major economic activities. In this regard, urban areas experiencing progressive economic marginalisation with consequent depopulation, face sustainability issues regarding energy use and maintenance of the existing infrastructure. With the aim of clarifying the role of shrinking cities within these transformations, a theoretical contribution is presented considering different approaches to co-production of energy transition processes in them.

Although one of the founders of a school of diplomats, which lasted until his death, d’Hauterive remains remarkably understudied in historiography. His diplomatic academy maintained an ambiguous relation with the law of nations. Despite numerous efforts and proposed projects, thediplomatic profession never fully professionalized during the thirty years of the academy’s existence. A biographical case-study of three former students of this school, all of whom eventually rose to the presidency of the Litigation committee of the French Foreign Office, will be used to analyse the Juridification of international relations.

This book examines, through a series of essays moving from the philosophy of the Enlightenment to the contemporary period, the problem of materialism in the history of philosophy and history of science. The themes range from classic subjects such as mind-body relationships, the status of the brain, the question of atheism, to the less traditional such as dreams, laughter, embodiment and emergence of a ‘New Materialism’. It is intended for historians of philosophy, literature and science as well as contemporary philosophers (of the mind, biology, science).

The term meykkīrtti - a hybrid term made from the Tamil word mey, meaning “truth, reality,” and the Sanskrit word kīrti, meaning “fame” - means “true fame.” It is a literary genre, attested epigraphically mostly, and it consists in the Tamil versified praise of a king. Stricto sensu, the genre of meykkīrtti was current under the Cōḻa (10th‑13th centuries) and late Pāṇḍya (13th‑14th centuries) dynasties in the Tamil area (present‑day Tamil Nadu) and beyond, in cases of incursions and conquests by the Cōḻas. Whatever the truthfulness of the content of meykkīrttis, these have, beyond their panegyric purport, helped to establish dynastic history. More recent approaches acknowledge the literary and political nature of meykkīrttis and exploit them as witnesses of a regional, literary and political culture.

Since 2007, in Algeria the Association Cinéma et mémoire in Bejaia has organised workshops for adults on documentary films. The objective is to to promote the training and artistic and civic expression of young Algerians through the use of audiovisual tools. This educational action, involving cinema professionals and socio-cultural counsellors, aims to create and maintain a film training centre. It involves a cross-border partnership, with Kaina Cinéma, an association based in Paris that promotes exchanges in the audiovisual field between Algeria and the countries of the Mediterranean Basin, as well as Les Ateliers Varan, a Parisian structure that has been promoting the establishment of workshops in foreign countries for thirty-five years.Bejaia Doc, following the Ateliers Varan, is a continuation of direct and anthropologically inspired cinema. The films exhibit a critical link to reality, questioning its staging through choices of film direction. Bejaia Doc's participatory principle allows us to see the reality of an environment from the point of view of "locals". In this way, we see from one film to the next distinct and related aspects of the Algerian reality : on the one hand, a painful attachment to an environment that was enclosed in the past, and on the other hand a feeling of despair that pushes them to leave. Undoubtedly it was the prospect of their distribution beyond Algerian borders, through Kaina Cinéma, that pushed the participants to capture a glance of uncompromising melancholy.

International audience; In research on the history and archaeology of games, dice are typically auxiliary finds that provide some, but often incomplete, information about which games were played, or how people played them. Cubic dice first appear in the archaeological record in the third millennium BCE, and even though they spread quickly to other parts of the world 1 , the information that has been gleaned from their presence has, to date, been minimal. This state of affairs may be partly explained by the abstract nature of the numeral signs and the regular shape of cubic dice that reveal little in terms of culturally or site-specific human behavior. Alternatively, it may be the lack of systematic studies on cubic dice that prohibits detection of patterns over time and/or space. Yet, a few notable studies have already demonstrated that dice can reveal important historical and culturally specific information. Below, we highlight attributes of dice to illustrate their potential in archaeological analyses. Die Attributes Defined The significance of dice for the understanding of gaming history, archaeological site chronology, and human behavior in general has largely been predicated on the identification of relevant die attributes. These attributes have been used in comparative studies that included historical and/or contemporary dice collections as well as in experimental studies of dice production. In these studies, "configuration" is the arrangement of numbers on a die with respect to one another. Two configurations have shown to be historically significant 2. For example, the dominant configuration today is where opposite sides add to seven (1 opposite 6, 2 opposite 5, and 3 opposite 4).

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Conference object 2022 FrancePublisher:OpenEdition Funded by:EC | Locus LudiEC| Locus LudiAuthors: Alexandra Attia;Alexandra Attia;La céramique attique à figures rouges offre un large répertoire de scènes impliquant des jeunes gens attachés à différentes activités.

IVe s. ap. The inventory of cult epithets derived from karpos , in a wide Greek world (Eastern Med iterranean, 5th century BCE 4th century CE), allows to define a set of deities designated as competent in the field of crops and agricultural production, in which Demeter, Dionysos, Zeus and Ge are pre-eminent. Such a distribution is quite instructive ab out ancient Greek polytheism and its dynamics in time and space.
