Three subregions can be distinguished based on differences in the physical climate: the tropical Angolan and the northern and southern Benguela upwelling systems (tAUS, nBUS, sBUS). The tAUS, which is remotely forced via equatorial and coastal trapped waves, can be characterized as a mixing-driven system, where the wind forcing plays only a secondary role. The nBUS and sBUS are both forced by alongshore winds and offshore cyclonic wind stress curl. While the nBUS is a permanent upwelling system, the sBUS is impacted by the seasonal cycle of alongshore winds. Interannual variability in the region is dominated by Benguela Niños and Niñas that are warm and cold events observed every few years in the tAUS and nBUS. Decadal and multidecadal variations are reported for sea surface temperature and salinity, stratification and subsurface oxygen. Future climate warming is likely associated with a southward shift of the South Atlantic wind system. While the mixing-driven tAUS will most likely be affected by warming and increasing stratification, the nBUS and sBUS will be mostly affected by wind changes with increasing winds in the sBUS and weakening winds in the northern nBUS.

This approximate model provides an interesting simple description of the interplay between waves and random forcing ensuing either from the wind or coming as the feedback of the ocean on the atmosphere and leading in a very fast way to the selection of some wavelength. This interwoven, yet simple, mechanism explains the emergence of typical wavelength associated to near inertial waves. Ensemble-mean waves that are not in phase with the random forcing are damped at an exponential rate, whose magnitude depends on the random forcing variance. Geostrophic adjustment is also interpreted as a statistical homogenization process in which, in order to conserve potential vorticity, the small-scale component tends to align to the velocity fields to form a statistically homogeneous random field. Mostafa; Papaioannou, Eva A.;AbstractAlthough considerable progress has been made in the management and planning of the marine environment, important gaps still exist in streamlining policies across governance levels, maritime sectors, and between different countries. This can hinder effective Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) and prevent harmonious cross-sectoral cooperation, and importantly, cross-border or trans-boundary collaboration. These may in turn have serious implications for overall ocean governance and ultimately, marine sustainability. The North Atlantic presents an ideal case-study region for reviewing these issues: North Atlantic countries have different governance structures, and as such, different approaches to marine policy. Therefore, for an effective marine management, cross-sectoral and cross-border MSP in the region, there is a need to review marine and maritime policies in order to identify differences and commonalities among countries. This chapter reviews major policies for the marine environment in the North Atlantic and assesses where differences between countries exist and at which governance level they are being created. Key research questions include: (i) Are there significant differences in marine policy between North Atlantic countries? Moreover, are there any substantial geographical/political differences? (ii) Are there differences in implementation of key policies? Such an analysis requires a sound framework for comparison among countries. To that end, the use of “horrendograms”, a tool increasingly being used by the marine research and planning community to assess such issues, is adopted. Results indicate that key differences between countries are created primarily at a national level of marine governance. Although differences between countries exist, overall strategic targets are similar. For instance, whilst the political systems of certain North Atlantic countries may differ substantially, key objectives for major sectors, such as fisheries and conservation, are similar – even when such objectives are implemented at different levels. Findings from the study can enable targeted policy intervention and, as such, assist the development of future outlooks of ocean governance in the region. Results can also aid the development of future visions and scenarios for MSP in the Atlantic region.

To date, transdisciplinarity research is a growing field in academia, but still there is no uniform definition. In this book chapter, we explore how the term ‘transdisciplinarity’ is used in marine research including different fields like quantitative ecology and modeling, marine social science or marine conservation. We used a quantitative full-text analysis of peer-reviewed journal publications from 1992 to 2021, ensuring to include most recent contributions to the analysis. A total of over 6000 publications could be identified, about 500 of these focusing on marine realm. We applied an agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis (program R) to consider relative frequencies of significant conceptual words within the transdisciplinary landscape. Multiple research clusters have been identified and further divided regarding the study background (e.g., meta-analysis, case study, theory).

Ships became primarily responsible for intercontinental connections as well as for the circulation and transport of people and animals, raw materials and goods, knowledge and technology, diseases, pathogens, and healing practices. Long-distance travels shortened distances, brought people and places closer together, made ports and port cities privileged spaces of contact, exchange, and miscegenation. In Europe, the location and the hybrid nature of these spaces made them prone to entry and spread of new diseases, requiring local governments to create and implement prophylactic and health control measures. In the 18th century, reflecting an increasing globalization process, these concerns went far beyond the European universe. Colonial territories have become spaces for experimentation of control and prevention measures.These procedures have been consolidated, participating in a process of construction of medical knowledge and practices that benefited both from the development of European medical and pharmaceutical science, as well as from the incorporation of non-European knowledge and practices, made possible by contacts between geographically and culturally different peoples. In the Portuguese Empire, the coastal areas emerged as privileged spaces for observation and study of the building of this process. In there it was possible to regard identification and knowledge of diseases and local healing practices, resulting from the interaction with the native populations, or regarding the imposition of biomedical practices related to the European pharmacopoeia. The peculiar situation of these sea-land interface areas allowed a better insight into how the interaction between different knowledge and practices was stimulated in the different geographies of the Empire leading to define specific procedures to prevent and/or control spread of diseases, especially in the case of epidemics. Thus the sea also become a vehicle for circulation of agents (human and non-human) that, in certain situations, were central, as in the case of pathologies eradication program, enabling thinking about the various aspects of human/non-human interaction in the social construction of diseases. If recognizing a disease can be a quick process, finding causes and antidotes can be time-consuming and costly, in a space-time marked by advances, setbacks and disparate realities that even compromise the effectiveness of the solutions found, as evidenced by efforts and measures to contain the current COVID-19 pandemic. From this perspective, the true history of diseases in their relationship with coastal areas also calls for a discussion about the “health” of seas, rivers, and oceans that have not only determined and nurtured their existence, but have also contributed to generate new landscapes, and new relationships between human and non-human communities within them, and to demonstrate the link between marine and coastal ecosystems and human populations health.

A statistical description of reanalysed pressure fields identifies these recurring patterns with clusters in state-space, also called “regimes”. Recently, these weather regimes have been described through instantaneous, local indicators of dimension and persistence, borrowed from dynamical systems theory and extreme value theory. Using similar indicators and going further, we focus here on weather regime transitions. We use 60 years of winter-time sea-level pressure reanalysis data centered on the North-Atlantic ocean and western Europe. These experiments reveal regime-dependent behaviours of dimension and persistence near transitions, although in average one observes an increase of dimension and a decrease of persistence near transitions. The effect of transition on persistence is stronger and lasts longer than on dimension. These findings confirm the relevance of such dynamical indicators for the study of large-scale weather regimes, and reveal their potential to be used for both the understanding and detection of weather regime transitions.

Far from their sources, emerging surface waves have low steepness characteristics, with very slow amplitude variations. Swell propagation then closely follows principles of geometrical optics, i.e. the eikonal approximation to the wave equation, with a constant wave period along geodesics, when following a wave packet at its group velocity. The phase averaged evolution of quasi-linear wave fields is then dominated by interactions with underlying current and/or topography changes (Phillips, 1977). Comparable to the propagation of light in a slowly varying medium, over many wavelengths, cumulative effects can lead to refraction, i.e. change of the direction of propagation of a given wave packet, so that it departs from its initial ray-propagation direction. This opens the possibility of using surface swell systems as probes to estimate turbulence along their propagating path.

In this chapter, the authors provide an overview of the main groups of aquatic photoautotrophs, exploring their complex evolutionary histories, and the diversity and limitations of genome and transcriptome data from cultured species for understanding algal biology. They consider how metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data generated by the Tara Oceans expeditions has unveiled patterns of algal biogeography and mechanisms of adaptation and acclimation to the marine environment, changing our understanding of how the dominant groups of algae function in the open ocean. The authors also present the current phylogenetic and biogeographical diversity of available algal nuclear genomes and transcriptomes, based on the manually verified isolation sites of the source cultures sequenced

Marine microbes play fundamental roles in nutrient cycling and climate regulation at a planetary scale. The field of marine microbial ecology has experienced major breakthroughs following the application of high-throughput sequencing and cultureindependent methodologies that have pushed the exploration of the marine microbiome to an unprecedented scale. This chapter overviews how the advances in gene- and genome-centric approaches as well as in culturing and single cell physiological methodologies in conjunction with global oceanographic circumnavigation expeditions and long-term time series are fueling our understanding of the biogeography, temporal dynamics, functional diversity, and evolutionary processes of microbial populations. We discuss how the joint effort of all those integrative approaches will help to boost our knowledge of the marine microbiome to reach a predictive understanding of how it is going to evolve in future scenarios.

Three subregions can be distinguished based on differences in the physical climate: the tropical Angolan and the northern and southern Benguela upwelling systems (tAUS, nBUS, sBUS). The tAUS, which is remotely forced via equatorial and coastal trapped waves, can be characterized as a mixing-driven system, where the wind forcing plays only a secondary role. The nBUS and sBUS are both forced by alongshore winds and offshore cyclonic wind stress curl. While the nBUS is a permanent upwelling system, the sBUS is impacted by the seasonal cycle of alongshore winds. Interannual variability in the region is dominated by Benguela Niños and Niñas that are warm and cold events observed every few years in the tAUS and nBUS. Decadal and multidecadal variations are reported for sea surface temperature and salinity, stratification and subsurface oxygen. Future climate warming is likely associated with a southward shift of the South Atlantic wind system. While the mixing-driven tAUS will most likely be affected by warming and increasing stratification, the nBUS and sBUS will be mostly affected by wind changes with increasing winds in the sBUS and weakening winds in the northern nBUS.

This approximate model provides an interesting simple description of the interplay between waves and random forcing ensuing either from the wind or coming as the feedback of the ocean on the atmosphere and leading in a very fast way to the selection of some wavelength. This interwoven, yet simple, mechanism explains the emergence of typical wavelength associated to near inertial waves. Ensemble-mean waves that are not in phase with the random forcing are damped at an exponential rate, whose magnitude depends on the random forcing variance. Geostrophic adjustment is also interpreted as a statistical homogenization process in which, in order to conserve potential vorticity, the small-scale component tends to align to the velocity fields to form a statistically homogeneous random field. Mostafa; Papaioannou, Eva A.;AbstractAlthough considerable progress has been made in the management and planning of the marine environment, important gaps still exist in streamlining policies across governance levels, maritime sectors, and between different countries. This can hinder effective Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) and prevent harmonious cross-sectoral cooperation, and importantly, cross-border or trans-boundary collaboration. These may in turn have serious implications for overall ocean governance and ultimately, marine sustainability. The North Atlantic presents an ideal case-study region for reviewing these issues: North Atlantic countries have different governance structures, and as such, different approaches to marine policy. Therefore, for an effective marine management, cross-sectoral and cross-border MSP in the region, there is a need to review marine and maritime policies in order to identify differences and commonalities among countries. This chapter reviews major policies for the marine environment in the North Atlantic and assesses where differences between countries exist and at which governance level they are being created. Key research questions include: (i) Are there significant differences in marine policy between North Atlantic countries? Moreover, are there any substantial geographical/political differences? (ii) Are there differences in implementation of key policies? Such an analysis requires a sound framework for comparison among countries. To that end, the use of “horrendograms”, a tool increasingly being used by the marine research and planning community to assess such issues, is adopted. Results indicate that key differences between countries are created primarily at a national level of marine governance. Although differences between countries exist, overall strategic targets are similar. For instance, whilst the political systems of certain North Atlantic countries may differ substantially, key objectives for major sectors, such as fisheries and conservation, are similar – even when such objectives are implemented at different levels. Findings from the study can enable targeted policy intervention and, as such, assist the development of future outlooks of ocean governance in the region. Results can also aid the development of future visions and scenarios for MSP in the Atlantic region.

To date, transdisciplinarity research is a growing field in academia, but still there is no uniform definition. In this book chapter, we explore how the term ‘transdisciplinarity’ is used in marine research including different fields like quantitative ecology and modeling, marine social science or marine conservation. We used a quantitative full-text analysis of peer-reviewed journal publications from 1992 to 2021, ensuring to include most recent contributions to the analysis. A total of over 6000 publications could be identified, about 500 of these focusing on marine realm. We applied an agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis (program R) to consider relative frequencies of significant conceptual words within the transdisciplinary landscape. Multiple research clusters have been identified and further divided regarding the study background (e.g., meta-analysis, case study, theory).

Ships became primarily responsible for intercontinental connections as well as for the circulation and transport of people and animals, raw materials and goods, knowledge and technology, diseases, pathogens, and healing practices. Long-distance travels shortened distances, brought people and places closer together, made ports and port cities privileged spaces of contact, exchange, and miscegenation. In Europe, the location and the hybrid nature of these spaces made them prone to entry and spread of new diseases, requiring local governments to create and implement prophylactic and health control measures. In the 18th century, reflecting an increasing globalization process, these concerns went far beyond the European universe. Colonial territories have become spaces for experimentation of control and prevention measures.These procedures have been consolidated, participating in a process of construction of medical knowledge and practices that benefited both from the development of European medical and pharmaceutical science, as well as from the incorporation of non-European knowledge and practices, made possible by contacts between geographically and culturally different peoples. In the Portuguese Empire, the coastal areas emerged as privileged spaces for observation and study of the building of this process. In there it was possible to regard identification and knowledge of diseases and local healing practices, resulting from the interaction with the native populations, or regarding the imposition of biomedical practices related to the European pharmacopoeia. The peculiar situation of these sea-land interface areas allowed a better insight into how the interaction between different knowledge and practices was stimulated in the different geographies of the Empire leading to define specific procedures to prevent and/or control spread of diseases, especially in the case of epidemics. Thus the sea also become a vehicle for circulation of agents (human and non-human) that, in certain situations, were central, as in the case of pathologies eradication program, enabling thinking about the various aspects of human/non-human interaction in the social construction of diseases. If recognizing a disease can be a quick process, finding causes and antidotes can be time-consuming and costly, in a space-time marked by advances, setbacks and disparate realities that even compromise the effectiveness of the solutions found, as evidenced by efforts and measures to contain the current COVID-19 pandemic. From this perspective, the true history of diseases in their relationship with coastal areas also calls for a discussion about the “health” of seas, rivers, and oceans that have not only determined and nurtured their existence, but have also contributed to generate new landscapes, and new relationships between human and non-human communities within them, and to demonstrate the link between marine and coastal ecosystems and human populations health.

A statistical description of reanalysed pressure fields identifies these recurring patterns with clusters in state-space, also called “regimes”. Recently, these weather regimes have been described through instantaneous, local indicators of dimension and persistence, borrowed from dynamical systems theory and extreme value theory. Using similar indicators and going further, we focus here on weather regime transitions. We use 60 years of winter-time sea-level pressure reanalysis data centered on the North-Atlantic ocean and western Europe. These experiments reveal regime-dependent behaviours of dimension and persistence near transitions, although in average one observes an increase of dimension and a decrease of persistence near transitions. The effect of transition on persistence is stronger and lasts longer than on dimension. These findings confirm the relevance of such dynamical indicators for the study of large-scale weather regimes, and reveal their potential to be used for both the understanding and detection of weather regime transitions.

Far from their sources, emerging surface waves have low steepness characteristics, with very slow amplitude variations. Swell propagation then closely follows principles of geometrical optics, i.e. the eikonal approximation to the wave equation, with a constant wave period along geodesics, when following a wave packet at its group velocity. The phase averaged evolution of quasi-linear wave fields is then dominated by interactions with underlying current and/or topography changes (Phillips, 1977). Comparable to the propagation of light in a slowly varying medium, over many wavelengths, cumulative effects can lead to refraction, i.e. change of the direction of propagation of a given wave packet, so that it departs from its initial ray-propagation direction. This opens the possibility of using surface swell systems as probes to estimate turbulence along their propagating path.

In this chapter, the authors provide an overview of the main groups of aquatic photoautotrophs, exploring their complex evolutionary histories, and the diversity and limitations of genome and transcriptome data from cultured species for understanding algal biology. They consider how metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data generated by the Tara Oceans expeditions has unveiled patterns of algal biogeography and mechanisms of adaptation and acclimation to the marine environment, changing our understanding of how the dominant groups of algae function in the open ocean. Marine microbes play fundamental roles in nutrient cycling and climate regulation at a planetary scale. The field of marine microbial ecology has experienced major breakthroughs following the application of high-throughput sequencing and cultureindependent methodologies that have pushed the exploration of the marine microbiome to an unprecedented scale. This chapter overviews how the advances in gene- and genome-centric approaches as well as in culturing and single cell physiological methodologies in conjunction with global oceanographic circumnavigation expeditions and long-term time series are fueling our understanding of the biogeography, temporal dynamics, functional diversity, and evolutionary processes of microbial populations. We discuss how the joint effort of all those integrative approaches will help to boost our knowledge of the marine microbiome to reach a predictive understanding of how it is going to evolve in future scenarios.
