    The Drivers-Pressures-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) framework was employed to understand the land use policies developed to manage coastal sand dunes and their consequences in Oregon, United States of America, during two contrasting periods: from the 19th to the late 20th century and from there to the early 21st century. A combination of historical data and scientific literature was used for this study. Dune destabilization became a socio-economic issue as Euro-Americans settled in Oregon in the 19th century. Ammophila arenaria and Ammophila breviligulata were widely used for stabilization. This led to a paradigm shift regarding dunes, at a time when their management was becoming more complex due to socio-natural factors. As non-native beachgrasses turned invasive causing the loss of biodiversity and habitats, their removal became the focus to restore the active dunes to support the natural processes of the ecosystem. However, the removal of these beachgrasses, particularly, Ammophila arenaria, results in low dune heights, increasing the risk of coastal flooding by reducing their effectiveness as a natural defense against sea-level rise and extreme storm surges. The reason for the contrasting dune management policies in Oregon since the 1930 s is that the management response to environmental impacts due to human drivers creates new drivers, pressures, and corresponding impacts, as shown in the DPSIR analysis. Thus, land use policies for managing coastal dunes in Oregon and other places must balance efforts to restore the native biodiversity while minimizing coastal flooding in a context of accelerating and continuous sea-level rise in the 21st century.

    Societal Impact StatementMaize is the world's second most important agricultural crop. The cereal was unknown to Europeans before the end of the 15th century, but since its arrival in Europe, it has changed agriculture, food and landscapes. Terraces where maize was cultivated in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula contributed to the formation of local cultures and identities. The history of maize and maize landscape are mementos that help to recover traditional practices, fostering identities, and are crucial for the successful implementation of sustainable policies to provide prosperous futures.Summary Maize (Zea mays L.) in the Iberian Peninsula embodies a history of landscape changes where the concepts of ‘exotic’, ‘traditional’ and ‘hybrid’ help to understand the engagements between landscape, farmers, agronomists (since the 19th and 20th centuries) and seeds. Today, landscapes reveal biophysical and ecological changes that reflect a panoply of intentions. A multitude of agents, and their interactions, acted upon those territories over time. Using historical sources from the leading institutions dedicated to agricultural research in the Iberian Peninsula, this paper aims to (1) contribute to a better understanding of the maize landscape and culture in the Iberian Peninsula and (2) interrogate how landscape changes (and the landscape history of maize) can frame local or regional heritage and identities reflecting customs or ways of life. The analysis unveils networks of knowledge, agricultural technologies and seed exchange. Politicians, economists, engineers, agronomists, farmers, governmental officials and agricultural industries planned and transformed traditional rural practices into modern and industrialised ones. Experts and politicians, willing to improve agricultural practices and seeds, using hybrid seeds or building new irrigation systems, led to deep social and landscape changes, allowing maize to cover territories far away from its traditional domains. Moreover, despite farmers' resistance, hybrid maize substituted landraces, eroding agrobiodiversity. Nowadays, the south and east regions of the Iberian Peninsula are the main producers of maize (hybrid), whereas in the Northwest maize is an occasional crop, being replaced by vineyards for economic reasons.

    Background: Soils affected by salinity are a recurring problem that is continually increasing due to the impact of climate change on weather conditions and ineffective agricultural management practices. The use of plant growth promoting (PGP) Bacteria can alleviate its effects. In this regard, the genus Rhizobium has demonstrated excellent PGP capabilities through various plant growth promotion mechanisms and may therefore be a promising biofortifier under saline conditions. However, little is known about the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by bacteria of this genus and their effects on plant development. Here, we aim to characterize the volatilome (the set of volatile metabolites synthesized by an organism) of Rhizobium for the first time and to further investigate the direct and VOC-mediated interaction between a strain of this genus and lettuce, a crop severely affected by salinity, both under saline and non-saline conditions. Results: In this study, it was shown that the use of Rhizobium sp. GPTR29 was able to increase the production of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) under normal and saline conditions. We analyzed the Rhizobium volatilome under non-saline (0 mM NaCl) and saline (100 mM NaCl) conditions by HS-SPME-GC‒MS and found a differential composition in response to salinity. We detected 20 different compounds, where 3-methyl-1-butanol, 2-methyl-1-butanol, and α-pinene were the backbone of the Rhizobium volatilome. Exposure to these compounds in bicameral plates under salt stress resulted in increases in plant development of 17.1%, 16.0% and 33.1% in aerial part size, number of leaves and root length, respectively. Under greenhouse conditions and salinity, the inoculation of Rhizobium sp. GPTR29 resulted in an increase of 17.8% and 27.4% in shoot fresh and dry weight, respectively. Phenolic compounds were analyzed by HPLC–DAD-MS, revealing an increase in total flavonoid content under salinity conditions (100 mM NaCl) and apigenin derivative, luteolin 7-O-glucoside and quercetin 3-O-glucuronide individually. Conclusions: These results provide new avenues for the study of PGP mechanisms in this bacterial genus, such as VOCs and their effects on plant growth, which play an important role in mediating plant–microorganism interactions.     Nanopesticides (Npes) carry the potential of increased efficacy while reducing application rates, hence increasing agricultural productivity in a more sustainable way. However, given its novelty, the environmental risk assessment of these advanced materials is mostly absent. In the present study we investigated the ecotoxicity of a commercial insecticide, with reported nanofeatures, Karate Zeon®, and compared it to its active substance lambda-cyhalothrin. It is hypothesised that the use of the nanopesticide Karate Zeon® poses lower risk to enchytraeids than its active substance. The standard non-target soil invertebrate Enchytraeus crypticus was used, and exposure was done in LUFA 2.2 soil in 4 tests (endpoints: days): avoidance test [avoidance behaviour: 2 days], OECD standard reproduction test [survival, reproduction plus adults' size: 28 days] and its extension [total number organisms: 56 days], and Full Life Cycle (FLC) test [hatching and juveniles' size: 13 days; survival, reproduction and adults' size: 46 days]. Results showed that enchytraeids did not avoid Karate Zeon® nor its active substance lambda-cyhalothrin, which could be due to neurotoxicity. There was no indication of increased toxicity with prolonged exposure (46, 56d) compared to the standard (28d) for neither of the materials, being overall equally toxic in terms of hatching, survival, and reproduction. The FLCt results indicated that the juvenile stage was the most sensitive, resulting in higher toxicity for the adult animals when exposed from the cocoon stage. Although toxicity was similar between Karate Zeon and lambda-cyhalothrin, different patterns of uptake and elimination cannot be excluded. The benefits of using Karate Zeon will rely on reduced application rates. published

    Background Air quality deteriorates significantly during wildfire events, which poses a risk for the health of affected human populations. The Mediterranean Basin was strongly impacted by wildfires during the 2021 fire season, particularly in Greece. Aims This work aims at estimating the impact of the Greek wildfires of August 2021 on the air quality in Athens. Methods The numerical modelling system WRF-APIFLAME-CHIMERE, which comprises a meteorological model, a smoke emissions model and a chemical transport model, was employed in estimating the hourly three-dimensional distribution of particulate matter (PM), CO and O3 concentrations during the wildfires. The performance of the modelling system was evaluated by comparing modelled results with air quality observations and atmospheric optical depth measurements. Key results Good agreement between measured data and model results was found, with results obtained with a higher-resolution computational grid performing the best. Conclusions The calculated values indicate concerning hourly and daily levels of air pollution, above the limit values for human health protection, during the analysed days within and around Athens. Implications The results highlight the importance of implementing a strategy for human health protection during wildfire events affecting populated areas. This modelling approach could be a basis for a smoke forecasting system.

    Wildfires burn millions of hectares of forest worldwide every year, and this trend is expected to continue growing under current and future climate scenarios. As a result, accurate knowledge of fuel conditions and fuel type mapping are important for assessing fire hazards and predicting fire behavior. In this study, 499 plots in six different areas in Portugal were surveyed by ALS and multisource RS, and the data thus obtained were used to evaluate a nationwide fuel classification. Random Forest (RF) and CART models were used to evaluate fuel models based on ALS (5 and 10 pulse/m2), Sentinel Imagery (Multispectral Sentinel 2 (S2) and SAR (Synthetic Aperture RaDaR) data (C-band (Sentinel 1 (S1)) and Phased Array L-band data (PALSAR-2/ALOS-2 Satellite) metrics. The specific goals of the study were as follows: (1) to develop simple CART and RF models to classify the four main fuel types in Portugal in terms of horizontal and vertical structure based on field-acquired ALS data; (2) to analyze the effect of canopy cover on fuel type classification; (3) to investigate the use of different ALS pulse densities to classify the fuel types; (4) to map a more complex classification of fuel using a multi-sensor approach and the RF method. The results indicate that use of ALS metrics (only) was a powerful way of accurately classifying the main four fuel types, with OA = 0.68. In terms of canopy cover, the best results were estimated in sparse forest, with an OA = 0.84. The effect of ALS pulse density on fuel classification indicates that 10 points m−2 data yielded better results than 5 points m−2 data, with OA = 0.78 and 0.71, respectively. Finally, the multi-sensor approach with RF successfully classified 13 fuel models in Portugal, with moderate OA = 0.44. Fuel mapping studies could be improved by generating more homogenous fuel models (in terms of structure and composition), increasing the number of sample plots and also by increasing the representativeness of each fuel model.

    Background Traditional burning is a practice with social and ecological value used worldwide. However, given the often improper and negligent use of fire, this practice is often associated with rural fire ignitions. Aims Systematise experts’ understanding of traditional burning and identify its challenges in the Portuguese context. Methods Twenty-eight Portuguese experts from industry, academia, NGOs and public entities with in-depth involvement in fire and forest management were interviewed to create a mental model of traditional burning in Portugal. Key results Eight dimensions were identified: motivations behind traditional burning, alternative solutions, risks before a traditional burn, risks during a traditional burn, underlying causes of risk, exogenous elements and factors, potential impacts, and activities leading to a successful traditional burn. Conclusions This study provides a comprehensive understanding of traditional burn practice in the Portuguese context and offers a baseline to support stakeholders and policymakers in managing traditional burning’s social and environmental impacts in the future. Implications This research offers several implications across the eight dimensions identified, including the need to improve regulations on the use of fire and fuel reduction policies, promote fire use education and feasible and affordable alternatives to traditional burning, and increase communities’ commitment to mitigation actions.

    Due to the current energetic transition, new geological exploration technologies are needed to discover mineral deposits containing critical materials such as lithium (Li). The vast majority of European Li deposits are related to Li–Cs–Ta (LCT) pegmatites. A review of the literature indicates that conventional exploration campaigns are dominated by geochemical surveys and related exploration tools. However, other exploration techniques must be evaluated, namely, remote sensing (RS) and geophysics. This work presents the results of the INOVMINERAL4.0 project obtained through alternative approaches to traditional geochemistry that were gathered and integrated into a webGIS application. The specific objectives were to: (i) assess the potential of high-resolution elevation data; (ii) evaluate geophysical methods, particularly radiometry; (iii) establish a methodology for spectral data acquisition and build a spectral library; (iv) compare obtained spectra with Landsat 9 data for pegmatite identification; and (v) implement a user-friendly webGIS platform for data integration and visualization. Radiometric data acquisition using geophysical techniques effectively discriminated pegmatites from host rocks. The developed spectral library provides valuable insights for spacebased exploration. Landsat 9 data accurately identified known LCT pegmatite targets compared with Landsat 8. The user-friendly webGIS platform facilitates data integration, visualization, and sharing, supporting potential users in similar exploration approaches.     This research aims at presenting landscape management planning methods to help stakeholders select forest ecosystem management plans that may address concerns with wildfire risk and with the environmental impacts of clearcuts. Specifically, we develop mixed integer programming models for spatial optimization that incorporate a wildfire resistance index as well as constraints on the size of clearcut openings. The former is used to enforce a minimum level of resistance to wildfire while the latter limits the size of openings, in each period of the planning horizon. Timber volume even flow is another concern that is also taken into account. This research is applied to the Zonas de Intervenção Florestal (ZIF) de Paiva and de Entre-Douro e Sousa (ZIF_VS) which are located in northwestern Portugal.

    The Drivers-Pressures-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) framework was employed to understand the land use policies developed to manage coastal sand dunes and their consequences in Oregon, United States of America, during two contrasting periods: from the 19th to the late 20th century and from there to the early 21st century. A combination of historical data and scientific literature was used for this study. Dune destabilization became a socio-economic issue as Euro-Americans settled in Oregon in the 19th century. Ammophila arenaria and Ammophila breviligulata were widely used for stabilization. This led to a paradigm shift regarding dunes, at a time when their management was becoming more complex due to socio-natural factors. As non-native beachgrasses turned invasive causing the loss of biodiversity and habitats, their removal became the focus to restore the active dunes to support the natural processes of the ecosystem. However, the removal of these beachgrasses, particularly, Ammophila arenaria, results in low dune heights, increasing the risk of coastal flooding by reducing their effectiveness as a natural defense against sea-level rise and extreme storm surges. The reason for the contrasting dune management policies in Oregon since the 1930 s is that the management response to environmental impacts due to human drivers creates new drivers, pressures, and corresponding impacts, as shown in the DPSIR analysis. Thus, land use policies for managing coastal dunes in Oregon and other places must balance efforts to restore the native biodiversity while minimizing coastal flooding in a context of accelerating and continuous sea-level rise in the 21st century.

    Societal Impact StatementMaize is the world's second most important agricultural crop. The cereal was unknown to Europeans before the end of the 15th century, but since its arrival in Europe, it has changed agriculture, food and landscapes. Terraces where maize was cultivated in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula contributed to the formation of local cultures and identities. The history of maize and maize landscape are mementos that help to recover traditional practices, fostering identities, and are crucial for the successful implementation of sustainable policies to provide prosperous futures.Summary Maize (Zea mays L.) in the Iberian Peninsula embodies a history of landscape changes where the concepts of ‘exotic’, ‘traditional’ and ‘hybrid’ help to understand the engagements between landscape, farmers, agronomists (since the 19th and 20th centuries) and seeds. Today, landscapes reveal biophysical and ecological changes that reflect a panoply of intentions. A multitude of agents, and their interactions, acted upon those territories over time. Using historical sources from the leading institutions dedicated to agricultural research in the Iberian Peninsula, this paper aims to (1) contribute to a better understanding of the maize landscape and culture in the Iberian Peninsula and (2) interrogate how landscape changes (and the landscape history of maize) can frame local or regional heritage and identities reflecting customs or ways of life. The analysis unveils networks of knowledge, agricultural technologies and seed exchange. Politicians, economists, engineers, agronomists, farmers, governmental officials and agricultural industries planned and transformed traditional rural practices into modern and industrialised ones. Experts and politicians, willing to improve agricultural practices and seeds, using hybrid seeds or building new irrigation systems, led to deep social and landscape changes, allowing maize to cover territories far away from its traditional domains. Moreover, despite farmers' resistance, hybrid maize substituted landraces, eroding agrobiodiversity. Nowadays, the south and east regions of the Iberian Peninsula are the main producers of maize (hybrid), whereas in the Northwest maize is an occasional crop, being replaced by vineyards for economic reasons.

    Background: Soils affected by salinity are a recurring problem that is continually increasing due to the impact of climate change on weather conditions and ineffective agricultural management practices. The use of plant growth promoting (PGP) Bacteria can alleviate its effects. In this regard, the genus Rhizobium has demonstrated excellent PGP capabilities through various plant growth promotion mechanisms and may therefore be a promising biofortifier under saline conditions. However, little is known about the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by bacteria of this genus and their effects on plant development. Here, we aim to characterize the volatilome (the set of volatile metabolites synthesized by an organism) of Rhizobium for the first time and to further investigate the direct and VOC-mediated interaction between a strain of this genus and lettuce, a crop severely affected by salinity, both under saline and non-saline conditions. Results: In this study, it was shown that the use of Rhizobium sp. GPTR29 was able to increase the production of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) under normal and saline conditions. We analyzed the Rhizobium volatilome under non-saline (0 mM NaCl) and saline (100 mM NaCl) conditions by HS-SPME-GC‒MS and found a differential composition in response to salinity. We detected 20 different compounds, where 3-methyl-1-butanol, 2-methyl-1-butanol, and α-pinene were the backbone of the Rhizobium volatilome. Exposure to these compounds in bicameral plates under salt stress resulted in increases in plant development of 17.1%, 16.0% and 33.1% in aerial part size, number of leaves and root length, respectively. Under greenhouse conditions and salinity, the inoculation of Rhizobium sp. GPTR29 resulted in an increase of 17.8% and 27.4% in shoot fresh and dry weight, respectively. Phenolic compounds were analyzed by HPLC–DAD-MS, revealing an increase in total flavonoid content under salinity conditions (100 mM NaCl) and apigenin derivative, luteolin 7-O-glucoside and quercetin 3-O-glucuronide individually. Conclusions: These results provide new avenues for the study of PGP mechanisms in this bacterial genus, such as VOCs and their effects on plant growth, which play an important role in mediating plant–microorganism interactions.     Nanopesticides (Npes) carry the potential of increased efficacy while reducing application rates, hence increasing agricultural productivity in a more sustainable way. However, given its novelty, the environmental risk assessment of these advanced materials is mostly absent. In the present study we investigated the ecotoxicity of a commercial insecticide, with reported nanofeatures, Karate Zeon®, and compared it to its active substance lambda-cyhalothrin. It is hypothesised that the use of the nanopesticide Karate Zeon® poses lower risk to enchytraeids than its active substance. The standard non-target soil invertebrate Enchytraeus crypticus was used, and exposure was done in LUFA 2.2 soil in 4 tests (endpoints: days): avoidance test [avoidance behaviour: 2 days], OECD standard reproduction test [survival, reproduction plus adults' size: 28 days] and its extension [total number organisms: 56 days], and Full Life Cycle (FLC) test [hatching and juveniles' size: 13 days; survival, reproduction and adults' size: 46 days]. Results showed that enchytraeids did not avoid Karate Zeon® nor its active substance lambda-cyhalothrin, which could be due to neurotoxicity. There was no indication of increased toxicity with prolonged exposure (46, 56d) compared to the standard (28d) for neither of the materials, being overall equally toxic in terms of hatching, survival, and reproduction. The FLCt results indicated that the juvenile stage was the most sensitive, resulting in higher toxicity for the adult animals when exposed from the cocoon stage. Although toxicity was similar between Karate Zeon and lambda-cyhalothrin, different patterns of uptake and elimination cannot be excluded. The benefits of using Karate Zeon will rely on reduced application rates. published

    Background Air quality deteriorates significantly during wildfire events, which poses a risk for the health of affected human populations. The Mediterranean Basin was strongly impacted by wildfires during the 2021 fire season, particularly in Greece. Aims This work aims at estimating the impact of the Greek wildfires of August 2021 on the air quality in Athens. Methods The numerical modelling system WRF-APIFLAME-CHIMERE, which comprises a meteorological model, a smoke emissions model and a chemical transport model, was employed in estimating the hourly three-dimensional distribution of particulate matter (PM), CO and O3 concentrations during the wildfires. The performance of the modelling system was evaluated by comparing modelled results with air quality observations and atmospheric optical depth measurements. Key results Good agreement between measured data and model results was found, with results obtained with a higher-resolution computational grid performing the best. Conclusions The calculated values indicate concerning hourly and daily levels of air pollution, above the limit values for human health protection, during the analysed days within and around Athens. Implications The results highlight the importance of implementing a strategy for human health protection during wildfire events affecting populated areas. This modelling approach could be a basis for a smoke forecasting system.

    Wildfires burn millions of hectares of forest worldwide every year, and this trend is expected to continue growing under current and future climate scenarios. As a result, accurate knowledge of fuel conditions and fuel type mapping are important for assessing fire hazards and predicting fire behavior. In this study, 499 plots in six different areas in Portugal were surveyed by ALS and multisource RS, and the data thus obtained were used to evaluate a nationwide fuel classification. Random Forest (RF) and CART models were used to evaluate fuel models based on ALS (5 and 10 pulse/m2), Sentinel Imagery (Multispectral Sentinel 2 (S2) and SAR (Synthetic Aperture RaDaR) data (C-band (Sentinel 1 (S1)) and Phased Array L-band data (PALSAR-2/ALOS-2 Satellite) metrics. The specific goals of the study were as follows: (1) to develop simple CART and RF models to classify the four main fuel types in Portugal in terms of horizontal and vertical structure based on field-acquired ALS data; (2) to analyze the effect of canopy cover on fuel type classification; (3) to investigate the use of different ALS pulse densities to classify the fuel types; (4) to map a more complex classification of fuel using a multi-sensor approach and the RF method. The results indicate that use of ALS metrics (only) was a powerful way of accurately classifying the main four fuel types, with OA = 0.68. In terms of canopy cover, the best results were estimated in sparse forest, with an OA = 0.84. The effect of ALS pulse density on fuel classification indicates that 10 points m−2 data yielded better results than 5 points m−2 data, with OA = 0.78 and 0.71, respectively. Finally, the multi-sensor approach with RF successfully classified 13 fuel models in Portugal, with moderate OA = 0.44. Fuel mapping studies could be improved by generating more homogenous fuel models (in terms of structure and composition), increasing the number of sample plots and also by increasing the representativeness of each fuel model.

    Background Traditional burning is a practice with social and ecological value used worldwide. However, given the often improper and negligent use of fire, this practice is often associated with rural fire ignitions. Aims Systematise experts’ understanding of traditional burning and identify its challenges in the Portuguese context. Methods Twenty-eight Portuguese experts from industry, academia, NGOs and public entities with in-depth involvement in fire and forest management were interviewed to create a mental model of traditional burning in Portugal. Key results Eight dimensions were identified: motivations behind traditional burning, alternative solutions, risks before a traditional burn, risks during a traditional burn, underlying causes of risk, exogenous elements and factors, potential impacts, and activities leading to a successful traditional burn. Conclusions This study provides a comprehensive understanding of traditional burn practice in the Portuguese context and offers a baseline to support stakeholders and policymakers in managing traditional burning’s social and environmental impacts in the future. Implications This research offers several implications across the eight dimensions identified, including the need to improve regulations on the use of fire and fuel reduction policies, promote fire use education and feasible and affordable alternatives to traditional burning, and increase communities’ commitment to mitigation actions.

    Due to the current energetic transition, new geological exploration technologies are needed to discover mineral deposits containing critical materials such as lithium (Li). The vast majority of European Li deposits are related to Li–Cs–Ta (LCT) pegmatites. A review of the literature indicates that conventional exploration campaigns are dominated by geochemical surveys and related exploration tools. However, other exploration techniques must be evaluated, namely, remote sensing (RS) and geophysics. This work presents the results of the INOVMINERAL4.0 project obtained through alternative approaches to traditional geochemistry that were gathered and integrated into a webGIS application. The specific objectives were to: (i) assess the potential of high-resolution elevation data; (ii) evaluate geophysical methods, particularly radiometry; (iii) establish a methodology for spectral data acquisition and build a spectral library; (iv) compare obtained spectra with Landsat 9 data for pegmatite identification; and (v) implement a user-friendly webGIS platform for data integration and visualization. Radiometric data acquisition using geophysical techniques effectively discriminated pegmatites from host rocks. The developed spectral library provides valuable insights for spacebased exploration. Landsat 9 data accurately identified known LCT pegmatite targets compared with Landsat 8. The user-friendly webGIS platform facilitates data integration, visualization, and sharing, supporting potential users in similar exploration approaches.     This research aims at presenting landscape management planning methods to help stakeholders select forest ecosystem management plans that may address concerns with wildfire risk and with the environmental impacts of clearcuts. Specifically, we develop mixed integer programming models for spatial optimization that incorporate a wildfire resistance index as well as constraints on the size of clearcut openings. The former is used to enforce a minimum level of resistance to wildfire while the latter limits the size of openings, in each period of the planning horizon. Timber volume even flow is another concern that is also taken into account. This research is applied to the Zonas de Intervenção Florestal (ZIF) de Paiva and de Entre-Douro e Sousa (ZIF_VS) which are located in northwestern Portugal.
