    Erosion of permafrost coasts due to climate warming releases large quantities of organic carbon (OC) into the Arctic Ocean. While burial of permafrost OC in marine sediments potentially limits degradation, resuspension of sediments in the nearshore zone potentially enhances degradation and greenhouse gas production, adding to the “permafrost carbon feedback.” Recent studies, focusing on bulk sediments, suggest that permafrost OC derived from coastal erosion is predominantly deposited close to shore. However, bulk approaches disregard sorting processes in the coastal zone, which strongly influence the OC distribution and fate. We studied soils and sediments along a transect from the fast-eroding shoreline of Herschel Island—Qikiqtaruk (Yukon, Canada) to a depositional basin offshore. Sample material was fractionated by density (1.8 g cm−3) and size (63 μm), separating loose OC from mineral-associated OC. Each fraction was analyzed for element content (TOC, TN), carbon isotopes (δ13C, Δ14C), molecular biomarkers (n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids, lignin phenols, cutin acids), and mineral surface area. The OC partitioning between fractions changes considerably along the transect, highlighting the importance of hydrodynamic sorting in the nearshore zone. Additionally, OC and biomarker loadings decrease along the land-ocean transect, indicating significant loss of OC during transport. However, molecular proxies for degradation show contrasting trends, suggesting that OC losses are not always well reflected in its degradation state. This study, using fraction partitioning that crosses land-ocean boundaries in a way not done before, aids to disentangle sorting processes from degradation patterns, and provides quantitative insight into losses of thawed and eroded permafrost OC.     The concept of sustainable intensification in agriculture necessitates the implementation of management practices that prioritize sustainability without compromising productivity. However, the effects of such practices are known to depend on environmental conditions, and are therefore expected to change as a result of a changing climate. We study the impact of crop diversification on productivity in the context of climate change. We leverage heterogeneous Earth Observation data and contribute a data-driven approach based on causal machine learning for understanding how crop diversification impacts may change in the future. We apply this method to the country of Cyprus throughout a 4-year period. We find that, on average, crop diversification significantly benefited the net primary productivity of crops, increasing it by 2.8%. The effect generally synergized well with higher maximum temperatures and lower soil moistures. In a warmer and more drought-prone climate, we conclude that crop diversification exhibits promising adaptation potential and is thus a sensible policy choice with regards to agricultural productivity for present and future.     This chapter addresses the current developments in the taxation of the digital economy including the current unilateral, multilateral, and EU proposals including objectives, challenges, and problems arising when implementing these proposals. The chapter also provides some elements of analysis regarding the evolution from e-commerce to the digital economy, as well as addresses the concerns regarding the requirement of local presence that may constitute a barrier to trade and investment. The diversity of the proposals reveals that there is no clarity on the best way to deal with highly digitalised business, with the multilateral approaches facing similar scrutiny, especially by developing countries. Therefore, as in trade and investment, multilateral approaches will need to do more to gain legitimacy vis-à-vis developing countries. The chapter concludes with some recommendations regarding the steps that can be taken to address this topic by governments, as well as policymakers at the national, EU, and international levels.

    LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology's precision in data collection has gained immense traction in the field of remote sensing, particularly in Precision Agriculture using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). To fulfill the pressing need for public UAV LiDAR datasets in the domain of Agricultural Sciences, especially for woody crops such as vineyards, this study presents an extensive dataset of LiDAR data collected from vineyards in northern Spain. The DJI M300 multi-rotor platform, equipped with a DJI Zenmuse L1 LiDAR sensor, conducted UAV flights at 20, 30, and 50 meters above ground level (AGL) across two vineyards during three development stages in 2021 and 2022. This dataset is composed of ten high-density 3D LiDAR point clouds stored in .laz format with embedded RGB information in each point. It provides insights into vineyard morphology and development, thereby aiding in the optimization of vineyard management strategies. Furthermore, it serves as a valuable tool for agricultural robotics, offering comprehensive terrain information for developing efficient flight paths and navigation algorithms. Finally, it serves as a reliable “ground truth” dataset to validate satellite-derived models, facilitating the creation of highly accurate digital elevation models (DEMs) and other derived models.

    Aim: to understand how wildfire risk policies are designed to mitigate11 The goal of the analysis here is not to promote wildfire exclusion, but to reduce the likelihood of fire ignition and manage the growth and intensity of wildfire events. the impacts of wildfires. Wildfires are a growing threat in many parts of the world, posing significant risks to human life, and the environment. In recent years, wildfires have increased, driven largely by climate change, human activity, and changes in land-use patterns. Wildfire risk adaptation and mitigation measures vary widely between countries and regions around the world. Therefore, it is essential to develop a comprehensive policy approach to mitigate wildfire risks and promote sustainable forest and land management practices. This article aims to provide insight into wildfire policies, implementation actions, and their effectiveness by describing wildfire policies centered mainly on exclusion and wildfire risk mitigation. Methodology: the article examines existing wildfire-related policies and relevant literature based on 10 systematic factors. Further exploring how these policies can be enhanced to meet the challenges of the coming years for six European countries (Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, UK) as well as Australia, Canada, USA, and South Africa. Results: The status quo, perceived strengths, weaknesses, and recommendations from key-informants were presented to enhance wildfire policies in each country. Conclusions: The article analyses current wildfire policies in fire-prone countries, highlighting regional variations and the need for an integrated management strategy. It offers country-specific recommendations based on the participants viewpoints, for coordinated efforts to mitigate wildfire risks and promote sustainable forest management.

    Assessing crop diseases at an early stage allows farmers to apply chemicals at the most efficient moment to control the pest and focus on the plants with the highest risk of developing the disease. Moreover, the earlier the assessment the lower the consequences, such as yield reduction, which is crucial to feed the increasing world population. BBR is the first open-source software based on physical and phenological crop parameters that grant the early assessment of botrytis bunch rot disease, caused by Botrytis cinerea, in vineyards using UAV images. This software has been released to improve the current procedure for early botrytis bunch rot assessment, which consists of laborious and time-consuming field inspections. In addition, BBR is easily modifiable by users to implement the workflow in their fields. For future work, the software can be extended to other crops and/or other fungal diseases.

    Land-based mitigation technologies and practices (LMTs) reduce GHG emissions associated with land use and/or enhance terrestrial GHG sinks. This article investigates capacity gaps to successfully facilitate LMT adoption and/or scaling in the regions of Latin America, Europe, North America, sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. We look at LMTs such as agricultural land management, agroforestry, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), biochar, forest management, and peat/wetland management. We used a triangulation method based on literature review, an online survey, and semi-structured interviews with experts from Academia, Industry, NGOs, Local Communities and Government, to capture and analyze the most prominent capacity gaps by LMT and according to regional contexts. This approach identified ‘understanding’, ‘awareness’ and ‘economic/finance’ as the most important capacity gaps when it comes to LMT adoption and scaling across the aforementioned regions. A recommended first step for increased LMT adoption would be to address the knowledge and understanding capacity gaps, which, in turn, could help make LMTs more attractive to stakeholders. Policymakers in cooperation with other stakeholders might reflect on dedicated support policies and regulatory frameworks that level the playing field for LMTs (as compared to mitigation technologies and practices in energy and other sectors). Other good practice examples include market building for LMTs, using emerging carbon markets, designing bottom-up implementation plans in cooperation with local and Indigenous Peoples, increased ecosystems services payments and taking into consideration local and traditional knowledge for successful LMT adoption and scaling.     To investigate changes in culinary practices associated with the arrival of farming, we analysed the organic residues of over 1,000 pottery vessels from hunter-gatherer-fisher and early agricultural sites across Northern Europe from the Lower Rhine Basin to the Northeastern Baltic. Here, pottery was widely used by hunter-gatherer-fishers prior to the introduction of domesticated animals and plants. Overall, there was surprising continuity in the way that hunter-gatherer-fishers and farmers used pottery. Both aquatic products and wild plants remained prevalent, a pattern repeated consistently across the study area. We argue that the rapid adaptation of farming communities to exploit coastal and lagoonal resources facilitated their northerly expansion, and in some cases, hunting, gathering, and fishing became the most dominant subsistence strategy. Nevertheless, dairy products frequently appear in pottery associated with the earliest farming groups often mixed with wild plants and fish. Interestingly, we also find compelling evidence of dairy products in hunter-gatherer-fisher Ertebølle pottery, which predates the arrival of domesticated animals. We propose that Ertebølle hunter-gatherer-fishers frequently acquired dairy products through exchange with adjacent farming communities prior to the transition. The continuity observed in pottery use across the transition to farming contrasts with the analysis of human remains which shows substantial demographic change through ancient DNA and, in some cases, a reduction in marine consumption through stable isotope analysis. We postulate that farmers acquired the knowledge and skills they needed to succeed from local hunter-gatherer-fishers but without substantial admixture.

    SHERPA has created rural Science-Society-Policy interfaces to engage citizens, stakeholders, policy-makers and scientists in the joint development of strategic thinking and practical recommendations for the formulation of modern rural policies. SHERPA captured and used results of ongoing and past research projects and created spaces and channels for meaningful interaction. SHERPA Multi-Actor Platforms (MAPs) were the main fora for co-learning and co-creation of knowledge between actors at European and regional levels. During the four-year project period, 40 regional MAPs and one EU-level MAP were set out to explore and test possibilities for improved policy stimulation and multi-actor and multi-level governance of rural development. The purpose was to tune local activities, policies and research to foster rural development policy by engaging citizens, rural stakeholders, researchers and policy makers. The assessment of existing knowledge to identify research gaps and the evaluation of the practical role and effectiveness of implemented policy in regional development was the basis for co-constructing recommendations for future rural development policies. A specific endeavour was put into inspiring and skill-building MAPs' capacities such that they continue after the end of the project.

    Abstract: Only recently there has been a strong focus on the impacts of microplastics on terrestrial crop plants. This study aims to examine and compare the effects of microplastics on two monocotyledonous (barley, Hordeum vulgare and wheat, Triticum aestivum), and two dicotyledonous (carrot, Daucus carota and lettuce, Lactuca sativa) plant species through two complimentary experiments. First, we investigated the effects of low, medium, and high (103, 105, 107 particles per mL) concentrations of 500 nm polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on seed germination and early development. We found species-dependent effects on the early development, with microplastics only significantly affecting lettuce and carrot. When acutely exposed during germination, PS-MPs significantly delayed the germination of lettuce by 24%, as well as promoted the shoot growth of carrot by 71% and decreased its biomass by 26%. No effect was recorded on monocot species. Secondly, we performed a chronic (21 d) hydroponic experiment on lettuce and wheat. We observed that PS-MPs significantly reduced the shoot growth of lettuce by up to 35% and increased its biomass by up to 64%, while no record was reported on wheat. In addition, stress level indicators and defence mechanisms were significantly up-regulated in both lettuce and wheat seedlings. Overall, this study shows that PS-MPs affect plant development: impacts were recorded on both germination and growth for dicots, and responses identified by biochemical markers of stress were increased in both lettuce and wheat. This highlights species-dependent effects as the four crops were grown under identical conditions to allow direct comparison. For future research, our study emphasizes the need to focus on crop specific effects, while also working towards knowledge of plastic-induced impacts at environmentally relevant conditions.

    Erosion of permafrost coasts due to climate warming releases large quantities of organic carbon (OC) into the Arctic Ocean. While burial of permafrost OC in marine sediments potentially limits degradation, resuspension of sediments in the nearshore zone potentially enhances degradation and greenhouse gas production, adding to the “permafrost carbon feedback.” Recent studies, focusing on bulk sediments, suggest that permafrost OC derived from coastal erosion is predominantly deposited close to shore. However, bulk approaches disregard sorting processes in the coastal zone, which strongly influence the OC distribution and fate. We studied soils and sediments along a transect from the fast-eroding shoreline of Herschel Island—Qikiqtaruk (Yukon, Canada) to a depositional basin offshore. Sample material was fractionated by density (1.8 g cm−3) and size (63 μm), separating loose OC from mineral-associated OC. Each fraction was analyzed for element content (TOC, TN), carbon isotopes (δ13C, Δ14C), molecular biomarkers (n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids, lignin phenols, cutin acids), and mineral surface area. The OC partitioning between fractions changes considerably along the transect, highlighting the importance of hydrodynamic sorting in the nearshore zone. Additionally, OC and biomarker loadings decrease along the land-ocean transect, indicating significant loss of OC during transport. However, molecular proxies for degradation show contrasting trends, suggesting that OC losses are not always well reflected in its degradation state. This study, using fraction partitioning that crosses land-ocean boundaries in a way not done before, aids to disentangle sorting processes from degradation patterns, and provides quantitative insight into losses of thawed and eroded permafrost OC.     The concept of sustainable intensification in agriculture necessitates the implementation of management practices that prioritize sustainability without compromising productivity. However, the effects of such practices are known to depend on environmental conditions, and are therefore expected to change as a result of a changing climate. We study the impact of crop diversification on productivity in the context of climate change. We leverage heterogeneous Earth Observation data and contribute a data-driven approach based on causal machine learning for understanding how crop diversification impacts may change in the future. We apply this method to the country of Cyprus throughout a 4-year period. We find that, on average, crop diversification significantly benefited the net primary productivity of crops, increasing it by 2.8%. The effect generally synergized well with higher maximum temperatures and lower soil moistures. In a warmer and more drought-prone climate, we conclude that crop diversification exhibits promising adaptation potential and is thus a sensible policy choice with regards to agricultural productivity for present and future.     This chapter addresses the current developments in the taxation of the digital economy including the current unilateral, multilateral, and EU proposals including objectives, challenges, and problems arising when implementing these proposals. The chapter also provides some elements of analysis regarding the evolution from e-commerce to the digital economy, as well as addresses the concerns regarding the requirement of local presence that may constitute a barrier to trade and investment. The diversity of the proposals reveals that there is no clarity on the best way to deal with highly digitalised business, with the multilateral approaches facing similar scrutiny, especially by developing countries. Therefore, as in trade and investment, multilateral approaches will need to do more to gain legitimacy vis-à-vis developing countries. The chapter concludes with some recommendations regarding the steps that can be taken to address this topic by governments, as well as policymakers at the national, EU, and international levels.

    LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology's precision in data collection has gained immense traction in the field of remote sensing, particularly in Precision Agriculture using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). To fulfill the pressing need for public UAV LiDAR datasets in the domain of Agricultural Sciences, especially for woody crops such as vineyards, this study presents an extensive dataset of LiDAR data collected from vineyards in northern Spain. The DJI M300 multi-rotor platform, equipped with a DJI Zenmuse L1 LiDAR sensor, conducted UAV flights at 20, 30, and 50 meters above ground level (AGL) across two vineyards during three development stages in 2021 and 2022. This dataset is composed of ten high-density 3D LiDAR point clouds stored in .laz format with embedded RGB information in each point. It provides insights into vineyard morphology and development, thereby aiding in the optimization of vineyard management strategies. Furthermore, it serves as a valuable tool for agricultural robotics, offering comprehensive terrain information for developing efficient flight paths and navigation algorithms. Finally, it serves as a reliable “ground truth” dataset to validate satellite-derived models, facilitating the creation of highly accurate digital elevation models (DEMs) and other derived models.

    Aim: to understand how wildfire risk policies are designed to mitigate11 The goal of the analysis here is not to promote wildfire exclusion, but to reduce the likelihood of fire ignition and manage the growth and intensity of wildfire events. the impacts of wildfires. Wildfires are a growing threat in many parts of the world, posing significant risks to human life, and the environment. In recent years, wildfires have increased, driven largely by climate change, human activity, and changes in land-use patterns. Wildfire risk adaptation and mitigation measures vary widely between countries and regions around the world. Therefore, it is essential to develop a comprehensive policy approach to mitigate wildfire risks and promote sustainable forest and land management practices. This article aims to provide insight into wildfire policies, implementation actions, and their effectiveness by describing wildfire policies centered mainly on exclusion and wildfire risk mitigation. Methodology: the article examines existing wildfire-related policies and relevant literature based on 10 systematic factors. Further exploring how these policies can be enhanced to meet the challenges of the coming years for six European countries (Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, UK) as well as Australia, Canada, USA, and South Africa. Results: The status quo, perceived strengths, weaknesses, and recommendations from key-informants were presented to enhance wildfire policies in each country. Conclusions: The article analyses current wildfire policies in fire-prone countries, highlighting regional variations and the need for an integrated management strategy. It offers country-specific recommendations based on the participants viewpoints, for coordinated efforts to mitigate wildfire risks and promote sustainable forest management.

    Assessing crop diseases at an early stage allows farmers to apply chemicals at the most efficient moment to control the pest and focus on the plants with the highest risk of developing the disease. Moreover, the earlier the assessment the lower the consequences, such as yield reduction, which is crucial to feed the increasing world population. BBR is the first open-source software based on physical and phenological crop parameters that grant the early assessment of botrytis bunch rot disease, caused by Botrytis cinerea, in vineyards using UAV images. This software has been released to improve the current procedure for early botrytis bunch rot assessment, which consists of laborious and time-consuming field inspections. In addition, BBR is easily modifiable by users to implement the workflow in their fields. For future work, the software can be extended to other crops and/or other fungal diseases.

    Land-based mitigation technologies and practices (LMTs) reduce GHG emissions associated with land use and/or enhance terrestrial GHG sinks. This article investigates capacity gaps to successfully facilitate LMT adoption and/or scaling in the regions of Latin America, Europe, North America, sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. We look at LMTs such as agricultural land management, agroforestry, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), biochar, forest management, and peat/wetland management. We used a triangulation method based on literature review, an online survey, and semi-structured interviews with experts from Academia, Industry, NGOs, Local Communities and Government, to capture and analyze the most prominent capacity gaps by LMT and according to regional contexts. This approach identified ‘understanding’, ‘awareness’ and ‘economic/finance’ as the most important capacity gaps when it comes to LMT adoption and scaling across the aforementioned regions. A recommended first step for increased LMT adoption would be to address the knowledge and understanding capacity gaps, which, in turn, could help make LMTs more attractive to stakeholders. Policymakers in cooperation with other stakeholders might reflect on dedicated support policies and regulatory frameworks that level the playing field for LMTs (as compared to mitigation technologies and practices in energy and other sectors). Other good practice examples include market building for LMTs, using emerging carbon markets, designing bottom-up implementation plans in cooperation with local and Indigenous Peoples, increased ecosystems services payments and taking into consideration local and traditional knowledge for successful LMT adoption and scaling.     To investigate changes in culinary practices associated with the arrival of farming, we analysed the organic residues of over 1,000 pottery vessels from hunter-gatherer-fisher and early agricultural sites across Northern Europe from the Lower Rhine Basin to the Northeastern Baltic. Here, pottery was widely used by hunter-gatherer-fishers prior to the introduction of domesticated animals and plants. Overall, there was surprising continuity in the way that hunter-gatherer-fishers and farmers used pottery. Both aquatic products and wild plants remained prevalent, a pattern repeated consistently across the study area. We argue that the rapid adaptation of farming communities to exploit coastal and lagoonal resources facilitated their northerly expansion, and in some cases, hunting, gathering, and fishing became the most dominant subsistence strategy. Nevertheless, dairy products frequently appear in pottery associated with the earliest farming groups often mixed with wild plants and fish. Interestingly, we also find compelling evidence of dairy products in hunter-gatherer-fisher Ertebølle pottery, which predates the arrival of domesticated animals. We propose that Ertebølle hunter-gatherer-fishers frequently acquired dairy products through exchange with adjacent farming communities prior to the transition. The continuity observed in pottery use across the transition to farming contrasts with the analysis of human remains which shows substantial demographic change through ancient DNA and, in some cases, a reduction in marine consumption through stable isotope analysis. We postulate that farmers acquired the knowledge and skills they needed to succeed from local hunter-gatherer-fishers but without substantial admixture.

    SHERPA has created rural Science-Society-Policy interfaces to engage citizens, stakeholders, policy-makers and scientists in the joint development of strategic thinking and practical recommendations for the formulation of modern rural policies. SHERPA captured and used results of ongoing and past research projects and created spaces and channels for meaningful interaction. SHERPA Multi-Actor Platforms (MAPs) were the main fora for co-learning and co-creation of knowledge between actors at European and regional levels. During the four-year project period, 40 regional MAPs and one EU-level MAP were set out to explore and test possibilities for improved policy stimulation and multi-actor and multi-level governance of rural development. The purpose was to tune local activities, policies and research to foster rural development policy by engaging citizens, rural stakeholders, researchers and policy makers. The assessment of existing knowledge to identify research gaps and the evaluation of the practical role and effectiveness of implemented policy in regional development was the basis for co-constructing recommendations for future rural development policies.     Abstract: Only recently there has been a strong focus on the impacts of microplastics on terrestrial crop plants. This study aims to examine and compare the effects of microplastics on two monocotyledonous (barley, Hordeum vulgare and wheat, Triticum aestivum), and two dicotyledonous (carrot, Daucus carota and lettuce, Lactuca sativa) plant species through two complimentary experiments. First, we investigated the effects of low, medium, and high (103, 105, 107 particles per mL) concentrations of 500 nm polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on seed germination and early development. We found species-dependent effects on the early development, with microplastics only significantly affecting lettuce and carrot. When acutely exposed during germination, PS-MPs significantly delayed the germination of lettuce by 24%, as well as promoted the shoot growth of carrot by 71% and decreased its biomass by 26%. No effect was recorded on monocot species. Secondly, we performed a chronic (21 d) hydroponic experiment on lettuce and wheat. We observed that PS-MPs significantly reduced the shoot growth of lettuce by up to 35% and increased its biomass by up to 64%, while no record was reported on wheat. In addition, stress level indicators and defence mechanisms were significantly up-regulated in both lettuce and wheat seedlings. Overall, this study shows that PS-MPs affect plant development: impacts were recorded on both germination and growth for dicots, and responses identified by biochemical markers of stress were increased in both lettuce and wheat. This highlights species-dependent effects as the four crops were grown under identical conditions to allow direct comparison. For future research, our study emphasizes the need to focus on crop specific effects, while also working towards knowledge of plastic-induced impacts at environmentally relevant conditions.
