AbstractThe development of novel techniques to record wide-field brain activity enables estimation of data-driven models from thousands of recording channels and hence across large regions of cortex. These in turn improve our understanding of the modulation of brain states and the richness of traveling waves dynamics. Here, we infer data-driven models from high-resolution in-vivo recordings of mouse brain obtained from wide-field calcium imaging. We then assimilate experimental and simulated data through the characterization of the spatio-temporal features of cortical waves in experimental recordings. Inference is built in two steps: an inner loop that optimizes a mean-field model by likelihood maximization, and an outer loop that optimizes a periodic neuro-modulation via direct comparison of observables that characterize cortical slow waves. The model reproduces most of the features of the non-stationary and non-linear dynamics present in the high-resolution in-vivo recordings of the mouse brain. The proposed approach offers new methods of characterizing and understanding cortical waves for experimental and computational neuroscientists.

In the last years, the characterization of brain-heart interactions (BHIs) in epilepsy has gained great interest. For some specific seizures there is still a lack of information about the mechanisms occurring during or close to ictal events between the central nervous system (CNS) and the autonomic nervous system (ANS). This is the case for neonatal seizures, one of the most common neurological emergencies in the first days of life. This paper evaluates possible differences in BHIs between newborns with seizures and seizure-free ones. We applied convergent cross mapping approaches to a cohort of 52 newborns from a public dataset. Preliminary results show that newborns with seizures have a lower degree of interaction between the CNS and the ANS than seizure-free ones (Mann-Whitney test: p-value0.05). These results are of clinical relevance for future BHI-based approaches to better understand the neural mechanisms behind neonatal seizures. Clinical Relevance- The study of BHIs in newborns with seizures might be helpful to better characterize the disorder or the aetiologies behind ictal events. Moreover, BHI approaches may confirm the involvement of the ANS during or close to a neonatal seizure event.

Several EEG-based Neonatal Seizure Detectors were proposed to support the clinical staff. However, less invasive and more easily interpretable methods than EEG are still missing. In this work, we investigated if Heart Rate Variability analysis and related measures as input features of supervised classifiers could be a valid support for discriminating between newborns with seizures and seizure-free ones. The proposed methods were validated on 52 subjects (33 with seizures and 19 seizure-free) of a public dataset collected at the Helsinki University Hospital. Encouraging results are achieved using a Linear Support Vector Machine, obtaining about 87% Area Under ROC Curve. This suggests that Heart Rate Variability analysis might be a non-invasive pre-screening tool to identify newborns with seizures.Clinical Relevance- Heart Rate Variability analysis for detecting newborns with seizures in NICUs could speed up the diagnosis process and appropriate treatments for a better neurodevelopmental outcome of the infant.

Due to the heterogeneity of etiologies and clinical characteristics, seizures recognition is tricky and time-consuming. Currently, the gold standard for seizure diagnosis is Electroencephalography (EEG), whose correct interpretation requires a highly specialized team. Thus, to speed up and facilitate the detection of ictal events, several EEG-based Neonatal Seizure Detectors (NSDs) have been proposed in the literature. Research is currently exploiting more simple and less invasive approaches, such as Electrocardiography (ECG). This work aims at developing an ECG-based NSD using a Generalized Linear Model with features extracted from Heart Rate Variability (HRV) measures as input. The method is validated on a public dataset of 52 subjects (33 with seizures and 19 seizure-free). Achieved encouraging results show 69% Concatenated Area Under the ROC Curve (AUCcc) for the automatic detection of windows with seizure events, confirming that HRV features can be useful to catch the cardio-regulatory system alterations due to neonatal seizure events, particularly those related to Hypoxic-Ischaemic Encephalopathies. Thus, results suggest the use of ECG-based NSDs in clinical practice, especially when a timely diagnosis is needed and EEG technologies are not readily available.Clinical Relevance- An ECG-based Neonatal Seizure Detector could be a valid support to speed up the diagnosis of neonatal seizures, especially when EEG technologies for infants' neurological assessment are not readily available.

AbstractAimFor 80 years, popular opinion has held that most of Madagascar's terrestrial vertebrates arrived from Africa by transoceanic dispersal (i.e. rafting or swimming). We reviewed this proposition, focussing on three ad hoc hypotheses proposed to render this unlikely scenario more feasible: (a) Could hibernation have helped mammals to reach Madagascar? (b) Could the aquatic abilities of hippopotamuses have enabled them to swim the Mozambique Channel? (c) How valid is the Ali‐Huber model predicting that eastward Palaeogene surface currents allowed rafts to reach Madagascar in 3–4 weeks? Finally, we explored the alternative hypothesis of geodispersal via short‐lived land bridges between Africa and Madagascar.LocationEast Africa, Madagascar, Mozambique Channel.TaxaFish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals.MethodsWe established colonization timeframes using molecular divergence dates estimated for Malagasy vertebrate lineages. We reviewed the likelihood of the “torpid waif” and “swimming hippopotamus” hypotheses, and re‐investigated Ali and Huber's model of Eocene jet‐like currents by tracking particle trajectories in currents simulated using the Institut Pierre‐Simon Laplace Earth System Model. Finally, we summarized recent geological findings from the Mozambique Channel, and used them to compile palaeosedimentological maps using PLACA4D.ResultsMadagascar's vertebrate fauna has complex origins. Hibernation is probably an adaptation to Madagascar's hypervariable climate, rather than a facilitator of mammal dispersal. Hippopotamus physiology precludes the ability to cross an oceanic channel deeper than 4 m and hundreds of km wide. The Ali‐Huber model of Palaeogene currents considerably underestimated the time required to cross the Mozambique Channel under simulated palaeogeographic conditions. New geological data indicate the existence of three short‐lived land bridges between Africa and Madagascar at 66–60 Ma, 36–30 Ma and 12–05 Ma.Main conclusionThe three Cenozoic land bridges afford a more grounded hypothesis for the dispersal of Madagascar's extant biota than transoceanic rafting or swimming, although vicariance, island hopping and limited rafting also played a role.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a widespread neurodegenerative disease caused by structural changes in the brain and leads to deterioration of cognitive functions. Patients usually experience diagnostic symptoms at later stages after irreversible neural damage occurs. Therefore, early detection of AD is crucial to start treatments to decelerate the progress of the disease and to maximize patients' quality of life. With the rapid advances in machine learning and scanning, early detection of AD may be possible via computer-assisted systems using neuroimaging data. Among all, deep learning utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become a prominent tool due to its capability to extract high-level features through local connectivity, weight sharing, and spatial invariance. This paper describes our investigation of the classification accuracy based on two publicly available data sets, namely, ADNI and OASIS, by building a 3D VGG variant convolutional network (CNN). We used 3D models to avoid information loss, which occurs during the process of slicing 3D MRI into 2D images and analyzing them by 2D convolutional filters. We also conducted a pre-processing of the data to enhance the effectiveness and classification performance of the model. The proposed model achieved 73.4% classification accuracy on ADNI and 69.9% on OASIS dataset with 5-fold cross-validation (CV), outperforming 2D network models.

However, EEG interpretation is time consuming and requires highly specialized staff. For this reason, in the last years there was a growing interest in the development of systems for automatic and fast detection of neonatal epileptic seizures. To this aim, we propose here hybrid systems that combines techniques related to the Stationary Wavelet Transform (SWT) as a support to deep-learning algorithms such as Convolutional Neural Networks and Fully Convolutional Networks. The proposed methods are validated on a public dataset of NICUs seizures recorded at the Helsinki University Hospital. Results are encouraging both in terms of Area Under the receiver-operating Curve, AUC (81%), Good Detection Rate, GDR (77%) and False Detection per hour, FD/h (1.6). Actually, the SWT step increases the performance of the proposed methods of about 5% for the AUC as compared to considering the raw EEG time-series only. These results, though preliminary, represent a significant step forward in solving the problem of neonatal seizure detection.

In this paper, we tackle the problem of action recognition using body skeletons extracted from video sequences. Our approach lies in the continuity of recent works representing video frames by Gramian matrices that describe a trajectory on the Riemannian manifold of positive-semidefinite matrices of fixed rank. In comparison with previous works, the manifold of fixed-rank positive-semidefinite matrices is here endowed with a different metric, and we resort to different algorithms for the curve fitting and temporal alignment steps. We evaluated our approach on three publicly available datasets (UTKinect-Action3D, KTH-Action and UAV-Gesture). The results of the proposed approach are competitive with respect to state-of-the-art methods, while only involving body skeletons. Updated version of the paper published in the workshop HBU2019. The differences with the published version are a few small corrections, mainly misleading notations for the distance function on p. 4, and missing square root in the expression for "d", in the Thm. on p. 4.

4, and missing square root in the expression for "d", in the Thm. on p. 4. Noticeable changes w. r. t. v1 and v2 on arxiv, please use this version instead
