The nautical traffic is very difficult to monitor since many vessels are not cooperative. VTSs (Vessel Traffic Systems) use several sources of information for estimating ships’ Position Navigation and Velocity, such as AIS (Automatic Identification System) and RADAR (RAdio Detection And Ranging); nevertheless, VTS areas do not cover the entire costal area of a country. In many cases the classification and identification of small non-AIS vessels could provide an important to the safety of navigation.Indeed, especially during the summer, the nautical tourism has a great impact on the maritime traffic congestion. The issue involves many institutions such as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and local maritime authorities which are not able to monitor the high volume of nautical traffic. This work introduces an optical system designed to monitor the traffic in small coastal areas based on images acquired by a single camera. The reliability and accuracy of the system is conditioned by the size of the pixel on the sea surface (Ground Sample Distance-GSD) and by the camera footprint area as well. More in detail, this work focuses on the detection of the best camera placement on the coast for optimizing the GSD size and obtaining the shape of camera footprint. The inspection was conducted on a target area of the MPA “Punta Campanella” located on the Sorrento coast.

Activities described in this paper concern the development of a newly urban transport solution which involves the revamping of electric bus and related fast-charge pantograph infrastructure. The sizing of the vehicle storage system in based on recorder mission profile and consumption acquired during real word testing, both in the real application scenarios and simulation environments. Optimal design relay on 5 Degree of Freedom vehicle model, for the purpose of estimating average consumption. These in formations are also useful to establish the size for the power and energy of the recharge infrastructures, which is equipped with flywheel inertial accumulators. Results show the accuracy of the developed model by comparing real and estimated energy consumption for several drive cycles, also concerning the effective route for the investigate bus line in the urban transport context.

The COVID-19 pandemic required the implementation of restrictions in the transport sector, changing the movement habits of users and, at the same time, highlighting the importance of creating a flexible transport system aimed at guaranteeing an uninterrupted supply of goods and people in any event. In the last decade, the pace at which sustainable and resilient mobility strategies were developed grew significantly due to the spread of technologies (such as ITS systems) and digital platforms related to Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS). These strategies might improve the overall efficiency of the transport system and reduce dependence on private cars in urban area. Moreover, the development of the demand responsive transport (DRT) is one of the solutions for planning end-to-end travel according to the transport needs. Actually DRT, such as the other shared modes, appears more convenient and capable to turn private car superfluous, reducing traffic congestion and noise and atmospheric pollution levels. After a review of the state of the art in literature, this paper shows the results of a descriptive and a preliminary analysis of DRT services in Italy. In particular, in the studied areas, the authors detected the type of service given and its national displacement, the category of users, the kind of stops, the fleet of vehicles and the presence of shared mobility services. Finally, the authors assessed the possibility to include these services within the Maas platforms suggesting some possible strategies for optimizing the implementation of intelligent mobility systems at Italian national level.

This paper presents a fast and simple approach to model and characterize internal impedance of Li-ion battery. This is an important aspect because, measuring the impedance in a wide frequency range, it is possible to investigate on the modifications of the internal electrochemical cell process and evaluating its State of Health (SOH), that it is an important parameter for the automotive applications. The first part of the paper explains the concept of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and how Li-ion batteries can be represented through electrochemical or empirical models. EIS test consists of the excitation of the battery, or cell, with a sinusoidal current signal, and then measuring the cell voltage, while the frequency response of the system is computed. Then the paper describes a procedure to test the cell and extract the parameters necessary for the model, in particular, the dependence between the parameters of the model and the State of Charge (SOC). Finally the paper shows how the internal impedance of a Li-ion battery is a dynamic parameter that depends on different factors and illustrate how the EIS can be used to obtain an impedance model.

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is commonly used for the diagnosis of electrochemical energy accumulators, for example Li-Ion batteries in Electric and Hybrid Vehicles. Measuring the impedance in a wide frequency range, it is possible to investigate on the modifications of the internal electrochemical cell process, evaluating its current state of life. EIS test consists of the excitation of the battery, or cell, with a defined current signal, and then measuring the cell voltage, the frequency response of the system is computed. The classical EIS test, based on the excitation with a frequency controlled sine wave in input, requires expensive instruments and long time test procedures; therefore it has many problems on the integration on the embedded systems. In this paper, a pseudo random square signal, which shows a simply hardware implementation, is used as excitation signal input on the cell for the impedance evaluation. The effectiveness of the method has been validated based on simulation test, in order to obtain good results in terms of impedance estimation accuracy, minimizing time duration and energy consumption.

Abstract Aviation is steadily growing worldwide as well as in the European Union (EU). Overall, EU transports increased their GreenHouse Gas (GHG) Emissions since 1990, while the other energy sectors succeeded in achieving a constant reduction over the same period. In this context, air transport is the most critical area to decarbonize, given the limited number of options that can be implemented, such as optimization of flight routes, increase of jet engine energy efficiency, and few others. Switching to renewable or low carbon fuels is thus the main opportunity for aviation. Large scale deployment of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) is however a real challenge, as it requires large investments in new production facilities, strong reduction in production costs (over the entire value chain, i.e. including feedstock production, collection and delivery), and considerable investments in ASTM certification. The present work shortly reviews the perspectives of aviation fuel in terms of demand and GHG emission trends, possible routes to jet fuel production, and the status of ASTM certified routes to jet fuel as of today.

The continuous growth of vehicles on the road and the consequent traffic congestion, especially in suburban areas, is a source for major concern. It impacts negatively on the operating costs of infrastructures and on the social and economic life in the surrounding area. From an economic perspective, travel time for the displacement between two junctions of a network is one of the most significant factors to be taken into consideration. On this basis, the designer decides on the level of service and the type of infrastructure to be built and the traveller assesses the alternatives to the existing modes of transport and his willingness to face the associated cost. In Europe, United Kingdom (UK) was the first country to value travel time in the early 1960s. Moreover, until 2011, it contributed to the estimation of the monetary value of time for 60% of international studies within the EU. The UK Department for Transport (DfT) adopts the Transport Analysis Guidance (WebTAG) as useful transport planning and design tool. This paper discusses on the guidelines and software tools adopted for the economic evaluation of transport interventions in UK and Italy, highlighting particularly, the values and methods for estimating the value of time (VOT) in both countries. We propose a strong integration of the two models taking into account the numerous parameters examined in UK and at the same time the method’s easy applicability for countries with different development conditions and needs.

In recent years, the concept of transit-oriented development (TOD) is increasingly applied to urban development based on the principles of smart growth and sustainable development. The growing complexity of urban systems and metropolitan areas requires an integrated strategic vision. This means addressing the issues of mobility and accessibility and their impact on the urban environment. Catania metropolitan area is characterized by a highly urbanized settlement with high percentage of urban sprawl. The General Master Plan of the city, shaped in 1964 and finally endorsed in 1969, severely reduced the opportunity for new developments by allocating areas for new urban facilities. The process of urban sprawl is mainly characterized by residential settlements. This aspect together with an inadequate road network and an insufficient public transport service brought to the growth of private cars on the roads, generating serious traffic congestion and making Catania based on a car-oriented model. Lately these conditions are changing as a consequence of the development of the underground metro network that connects the main city’s service centers like the hospitals, the university (and soon also the Airport) to the city center. To achieve sustainable transportation and resolve the aforementioned problems, we have applied TOD criteria to some of the main city’s transport junctions (selected using the Multi Criteria Decision Aid methodology) in order to fulfills the principle of sustainable transportation.

Gas networks work with time-dependent flow demand and sometimes in emergency conditions or the presence of undesired situations. In this scenario, unsteady simulations are necessary to design, control and analyze gas network systems. The Gas Network Solver, developed by the authors, aims to simulate the behavior of gas transportation pipelines with large diameter and length as well as gas distribution networks with branching pipes. This paper focuses on the implementation of the pipe model that is the most significant component with dynamic characteristics. A finite difference method is used to solve 1-D equations of compressible viscous fluids. The gas in the pipes is considered in thermal equilibrium. Therefore, an isothermal approach is adopted. The unsteady model is tested through an application example of a looped gas network. The results, compared with numerical data of some studies in the literature, show good accuracy of the tool developed. The nautical traffic is very difficult to monitor since many vessels are not cooperative. VTSs (Vessel Traffic Systems) use several sources of information for estimating ships’ Position Navigation and Velocity, such as AIS (Automatic Identification System) and RADAR (RAdio Detection And Ranging); nevertheless, VTS areas do not cover the entire costal area of a country. In many cases the classification and identification of small non-AIS vessels could provide an important to the safety of navigation.Indeed, especially during the summer, the nautical tourism has a great impact on the maritime traffic congestion. The issue involves many institutions such as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and local maritime authorities which are not able to monitor the high volume of nautical traffic. This work introduces an optical system designed to monitor the traffic in small coastal areas based on images acquired by a single camera. The reliability and accuracy of the system is conditioned by the size of the pixel on the sea surface (Ground Sample Distance-GSD) and by the camera footprint area as well. More in detail, this work focuses on the detection of the best camera placement on the coast for optimizing the GSD size and obtaining the shape of camera footprint. The inspection was conducted on a target area of the MPA “Punta Campanella” located on the Sorrento coast.

Activities described in this paper concern the development of a newly urban transport solution which involves the revamping of electric bus and related fast-charge pantograph infrastructure. The sizing of the vehicle storage system in based on recorder mission profile and consumption acquired during real word testing, both in the real application scenarios and simulation environments. Optimal design relay on 5 Degree of Freedom vehicle model, for the purpose of estimating average consumption. These in formations are also useful to establish the size for the power and energy of the recharge infrastructures, which is equipped with flywheel inertial accumulators. Results show the accuracy of the developed model by comparing real and estimated energy consumption for several drive cycles, also concerning the effective route for the investigate bus line in the urban transport context.

The COVID-19 pandemic required the implementation of restrictions in the transport sector, changing the movement habits of users and, at the same time, highlighting the importance of creating a flexible transport system aimed at guaranteeing an uninterrupted supply of goods and people in any event. In the last decade, the pace at which sustainable and resilient mobility strategies were developed grew significantly due to the spread of technologies (such as ITS systems) and digital platforms related to Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS). These strategies might improve the overall efficiency of the transport system and reduce dependence on private cars in urban area. Moreover, the development of the demand responsive transport (DRT) is one of the solutions for planning end-to-end travel according to the transport needs. Actually DRT, such as the other shared modes, appears more convenient and capable to turn private car superfluous, reducing traffic congestion and noise and atmospheric pollution levels. After a review of the state of the art in literature, this paper shows the results of a descriptive and a preliminary analysis of DRT services in Italy. In particular, in the studied areas, the authors detected the type of service given and its national displacement, the category of users, the kind of stops, the fleet of vehicles and the presence of shared mobility services. Finally, the authors assessed the possibility to include these services within the Maas platforms suggesting some possible strategies for optimizing the implementation of intelligent mobility systems at Italian national level.

This paper presents a fast and simple approach to model and characterize internal impedance of Li-ion battery. This is an important aspect because, measuring the impedance in a wide frequency range, it is possible to investigate on the modifications of the internal electrochemical cell process and evaluating its State of Health (SOH), that it is an important parameter for the automotive applications. The first part of the paper explains the concept of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and how Li-ion batteries can be represented through electrochemical or empirical models. EIS test consists of the excitation of the battery, or cell, with a sinusoidal current signal, and then measuring the cell voltage, while the frequency response of the system is computed. Then the paper describes a procedure to test the cell and extract the parameters necessary for the model, in particular, the dependence between the parameters of the model and the State of Charge (SOC). Finally the paper shows how the internal impedance of a Li-ion battery is a dynamic parameter that depends on different factors and illustrate how the EIS can be used to obtain an impedance model.

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is commonly used for the diagnosis of electrochemical energy accumulators, for example Li-Ion batteries in Electric and Hybrid Vehicles. Measuring the impedance in a wide frequency range, it is possible to investigate on the modifications of the internal electrochemical cell process, evaluating its current state of life. EIS test consists of the excitation of the battery, or cell, with a defined current signal, and then measuring the cell voltage, the frequency response of the system is computed. The classical EIS test, based on the excitation with a frequency controlled sine wave in input, requires expensive instruments and long time test procedures; therefore it has many problems on the integration on the embedded systems. In this paper, a pseudo random square signal, which shows a simply hardware implementation, is used as excitation signal input on the cell for the impedance evaluation. The effectiveness of the method has been validated based on simulation test, in order to obtain good results in terms of impedance estimation accuracy, minimizing time duration and energy consumption.

Abstract Aviation is steadily growing worldwide as well as in the European Union (EU). Overall, EU transports increased their GreenHouse Gas (GHG) Emissions since 1990, while the other energy sectors succeeded in achieving a constant reduction over the same period. In this context, air transport is the most critical area to decarbonize, given the limited number of options that can be implemented, such as optimization of flight routes, increase of jet engine energy efficiency, and few others. Switching to renewable or low carbon fuels is thus the main opportunity for aviation. Large scale deployment of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) is however a real challenge, as it requires large investments in new production facilities, strong reduction in production costs (over the entire value chain, i.e. including feedstock production, collection and delivery), and considerable investments in ASTM certification. The present work shortly reviews the perspectives of aviation fuel in terms of demand and GHG emission trends, possible routes to jet fuel production, and the status of ASTM certified routes to jet fuel as of today.

The continuous growth of vehicles on the road and the consequent traffic congestion, especially in suburban areas, is a source for major concern. It impacts negatively on the operating costs of infrastructures and on the social and economic life in the surrounding area. From an economic perspective, travel time for the displacement between two junctions of a network is one of the most significant factors to be taken into consideration. On this basis, the designer decides on the level of service and the type of infrastructure to be built and the traveller assesses the alternatives to the existing modes of transport and his willingness to face the associated cost. In Europe, United Kingdom (UK) was the first country to value travel time in the early 1960s. Moreover, until 2011, it contributed to the estimation of the monetary value of time for 60% of international studies within the EU. The UK Department for Transport (DfT) adopts the Transport Analysis Guidance (WebTAG) as useful transport planning and design tool. This paper discusses on the guidelines and software tools adopted for the economic evaluation of transport interventions in UK and Italy, highlighting particularly, the values and methods for estimating the value of time (VOT) in both countries. We propose a strong integration of the two models taking into account the numerous parameters examined in UK and at the same time the method’s easy applicability for countries with different development conditions and needs.

In recent years, the concept of transit-oriented development (TOD) is increasingly applied to urban development based on the principles of smart growth and sustainable development. The growing complexity of urban systems and metropolitan areas requires an integrated strategic vision. This means addressing the issues of mobility and accessibility and their impact on the urban environment. Catania metropolitan area is characterized by a highly urbanized settlement with high percentage of urban sprawl. The General Master Plan of the city, shaped in 1964 and finally endorsed in 1969, severely reduced the opportunity for new developments by allocating areas for new urban facilities. The process of urban sprawl is mainly characterized by residential settlements. This aspect together with an inadequate road network and an insufficient public transport service brought to the growth of private cars on the roads, generating serious traffic congestion and making Catania based on a car-oriented model. Lately these conditions are changing as a consequence of the development of the underground metro network that connects the main city’s service centers like the hospitals, the university (and soon also the Airport) to the city center. To achieve sustainable transportation and resolve the aforementioned problems, we have applied TOD criteria to some of the main city’s transport junctions (selected using the Multi Criteria Decision Aid methodology) in order to fulfills the principle of sustainable transportation.

Gas networks work with time-dependent flow demand and sometimes in emergency conditions or the presence of undesired situations. In this scenario, unsteady simulations are necessary to design, control and analyze gas network systems. The Gas Network Solver, developed by the authors, aims to simulate the behavior of gas transportation pipelines with large diameter and length as well as gas distribution networks with branching pipes. This paper focuses on the implementation of the pipe model that is the most significant component with dynamic characteristics. A finite difference method is used to solve 1-D equations of compressible viscous fluids. The gas in the pipes is considered in thermal equilibrium. Therefore, an isothermal approach is adopted. The unsteady model is tested through an application example of a looped gas network. The results, compared with numerical data of some studies in the literature, show good accuracy of the tool developed.
