International audience; Nowadays, the sustainability of Greek dairy cattle farms is questionable due to low competitiveness and high GHG emissions. In this context, the BIOCIRCULAR project, funded by the EYDE ETAK, developed a series of alternative practices focusing on precision agriculture principles. However, the adoption of any practice from farmers is not a given, and depends on several determinants. Hence, the objective of this study is to examine farmers’ adoption decisions regarding precision-agricultural practices in Greek dairy production systems, as well as the economic and environmental impacts of this adoption. In order to achieve this, a bio-economic model was developed based on mathematical programming methods. The proposed model simulates a large number of dairy cattle farms with or without crop production, including different management strategies and their relevant costs, and provides an environmental assessment of the adopted practices based on GHG emissions. Moreover, in order to analyze farmers’ adoption decisions, different policy measures, linked to various environmental outcomes, were examined. The results highlighted that the adoption of precision-agricultural practices led to significantly better economic and environmental outcomes. Furthermore, it was found that different levels of incentives can be efficiently targeted to encourage the adoption of new feeds and, more broadly, to secure the sustainability of the sector.

In Delay-Tolerant Networks (DTNs), humans are the main carriers of mobile devices, signifying that human mobility can be exploited by extracting nodes’ interests, social behavior, and spatiotemporal features for the performance evaluation of DTNs protocols. This paper presents a new mobility model that describes students’ daily activities in a campus environment. Unlike the conventional random walk models, which use a free space environment, our model includes a collision-avoidance technique that generates an escape path upon encountering obstacles of different shapes and sizes that obstruct pedestrian movement. We evaluate the model’s usefulness by comparing the distributions of its synthetic traces with realistic traces in terms of spatial, temporal, and connectivity features of human mobility. Similarly, we analyze the concept of dynamic movement clusters observed on the location-based trajectories of the studied real traces. The model synthetically generates traces with the distribution of the intercluster travel distance, intracluster travel distance, direction of movement, contact duration, intercontact time, and pause time similar to the distribution of real traces.

The atmospheric CO2 growth rates would have been much larger if natural sinks in the land biosphere and ocean had not removed over half of this anthropogenic CO2. As these CO2 emissions grew, uptake by the ocean increased in response to increases in atmospheric CO2 partial pressure (pCO2). On land, gross primary production also increased, but the dynamics of other key aspects of the land carbon cycle varied regionally. Over the past three decades, CO2 uptake by intact tropical humid forests declined, but these changes are offset by increased uptake across mid‐ and high‐latitudes. While there have been substantial improvements in our ability to study the carbon cycle, measurement and modeling gaps still limit our understanding of the processes driving its evolution. Continued ship‐based observations combined with expanded deployments of autonomous platforms are needed to quantify ocean‐atmosphere fluxes and interior ocean carbon storage on policy‐relevant spatial and temporal scales. There is also an urgent need for more comprehensive measurements of stocks, fluxes and atmospheric CO2 in humid tropical forests and across the Arctic and boreal regions, which are experiencing rapid change. Here, we review our understanding of the atmosphere, ocean, and land carbon cycles and their interactions, identify emerging measurement and modeling capabilities and gaps and the need for a sustainable, operational framework to ensure a scientific basis for carbon management.

Due to the increase in demand for building materials and their high prices in most developing countries, many researchers are trying to recycle waste for use as secondary raw materials. The aim of this study is the optimization of a mixture of compressed earth blocks based on two sediments. These sediments were tested through the Vicat test to determine the proportion of each one and the optimal water content. The mixtures were treated by adding 10% of blast furnace slag and different proportions of dissolved glass in a NaOH solution. The results indicated that the mixture of 70% Oran sediments with 30% Sidi Lakhdar sediments treated with 4% glass waste produced a CEB (compressed earth block) with high compressive strength with low porosity. In addition, formulated CEBs have a very good resistance to water immersion.

International audience; Electric Vehicle (EV) bidirectional charger technology is growing in importance. It defines the fact of returning the electricity stored in the batteries of EV to Grid (V2G), to Home (V2H), to Load (V2L), or in one word V2X mode. The EV onboard charger is divided into two parts: AC-DC and DC-DC converters. The isolated bidirectional DC-DC LLC resonant converter is used to improve the charger efficiency within both battery power and voltage ranges. It is controlled by varying the switching frequency based on a small signal modeling approach using the gain transfer function inversion method. The dimensions of the DC-DC LLC converter directly affect the charger cost. Moreover, they cause an important control frequency saturation zone, especially in V2X mode, where the switching frequency is out of the feasibility zone. The new challenge in this paper is to design an optimization strategy to minimize the LLC converter cost and improve the control frequency feasibility zone, for a wide variation of battery voltage and converter power, in the charging (G2V) and discharging (V2X) modes simultaneously. For our best knowledge, this optimization problem, in the case of a bidirectional (G2V and V2X) charger, is not yet considered in the literature. An optimal design that considers the control stability equations in the optimization algorithm is elaborated. The obtained results show a significant converter cost decrease and important expansion of control frequency feasibility zones. A comparative study between initial and optimized values, in G2V and V2X modes, is generated according to the converter efficiency.

Humanity is using mineral resources at an unprecedented level and demand will 1 continue to grow over the next few decades before stabilizing by the end of the century, due to 2 the economic development of populated countries and the energy and digital transitions. The 3 demand for raw materials must be estimated with a bottom-up and regionalized approach, and 4 the supply capacity with approaches coupling long-term prices with energy and production costs 5 controlled by the quality of the resource and the rate of technological improvement that depends on 6 thermodynamic limits. Such modelling provides arguments in favour of two classically opposed 7 visions of the future of mineral resources: an unaffordable increase in costs and prices following the 8 depletion of high quality deposits or, on the contrary, a favourable compensation by technological 9 improvements. Both views are true, but not at the same time. After a period of energy and 10 production cost gains, we now appear to be entering a pivotal period of long-term production 11 cost increases as we approach the minimum practical energy and thermodynamic limits for many 12 metals.

International audience; To face the new challenges caused by modern industry, logistics operations managers need to focus more on integrating sustainability goals, adapt to unexpected disruptions and find new strategies and models for logistics management. The COVID-19 pandemic has proven that unforeseen fragilities, negatively affecting the supply chain performance, can arise rapidly, and logistics systems may confront unprecedented vulnerabilities regarding network structure disruption and high demand fluctuations. The existing studies on a resilient logistics network design did not sufficiently consider sustainability aspects. In fact, they mainly addressed the independent planning of decision-making problems with economic objectives. To fill this research gap, this paper concentrates on the design of resilient and sustainable logistics networks under epidemic disruption and demand uncertainty. A two-stage stochastic mixed integer programming model is proposed to integrate key decisions of location–allocation, inventory and routing planning. Moreover, epidemic disruptions and demand uncertainty are incorporated through plausible scenarios using a Monte Carlo simulation. In addition, two resiliency strategies, namely, capacity augmentation and logistics collaboration, are included into the basic model in order to improve the resilience and the sustainability of a logistics chain network. Finally, numerical examples are presented to validate the proposed approach, evaluate the performance of the different design models and provide managerial insights. The obtained results show that the integration of two design strategies improves resilience and sustainability.

International audience; Faceshield brackets were among highly relevant products manufactured in various workshops, including Sigma Clermont, during the outbreak of COVID-19 to tackle acute shortages of personal protective equipment. However, many of these products are yet to be checked for appropriateness in design, quality, safety, comfort, and overall sustainability performance which might lead to unknown damages to human health and the environment. Thus, the main objective of this study is to evaluate the sustainable performance of Faceshield bracket manufacturing. Appropriate data are collected from designers, machine operators, and supplementary data are utilized from experts’ opinions and literature. A total of 38 carefully selected indicator sets are utilized while applying multicriteria decision-making methodology (MCDM) of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to evaluate the sustainability performance of these manufacturing processes. Evaluation is performed to examine the processes’ sustainability performance and associated indicator contribution based on the three dimensions. Results disclosed that 3D printing (score = 0.108) showed better performance for the environment, and injection molding showed better economic and social performance, with scores of 0.1922 and 0.160, respectively. A detailed contribution of each subcriteria for each sustainability dimension and each of the three processes as well as major contributing indicators are identified and discussed. Finally, overall performance was assessed using the total sum approach, and Borda count methodology and injection molding showed better sustainability performance in the manufacturing of Faceshield brackets considered with scores of 43 and 87, respectively. The authors believe that indicator selection approaches and overall methodology followed for this study will be relevant for future sustainability evaluation of engineering products.

Invasion rates have increased in the past 100 y irrespective of international conventions. What characterizes a successful invasion event? And how does genetic diversity translate into invasion success? Employing a whole-genome perspective using one of the most successful marine invasive species world-wide as a model, we resolve temporal invasion dynamics during independent invasion events in Eurasia. We reveal complex regionally independent invasion histories including cases of recurrent translocations, time-limited translocations, and stepping-stone range expansions with severe bottlenecks within the same species. Irrespective of these different invasion dynamics, which lead to contrasting patterns of genetic diversity, all nonindigenous populations are similarly successful. This illustrates that genetic diversity, per se, is not necessarily the driving force behind invasion success. Other factors such as propagule pressure and repeated introductions are an important contribution to facilitate successful invasions. This calls into question the dominant paradigm of the genetic paradox of invasions, i.e., the successful establishment of nonindigenous populations with low levels of genetic diversity. Significance A central goal in invasion genomics is to identify and determine the mechanisms that underlie the successful colonization, establishment, and subsequent range expansion of invasive populations of nonindigenous species. Using a whole-genome approach, we evaluate the importance of genetic diversity for the successful establishment of nonindigenous species. Our study shows that genetic diversity per se is not the major factor driving invasions, since we observed all possible scenarios with invasive populations showing reduced, similar but also increased, genetic diversity relative to the native population. Using coalescent methods, we reconstruct the demographic history of the invasion and infer the source population of each invasion event, which shows that propagule pressure and multiple introductions play an important role in determining invasion success.

In this paper, the thermal behavior of large pieces of wood pyrolysis has been modeled. Two mathematical models coupling heat transfer equations to chemical kinetics were used to predict the pyrolytic degradation of a 25 mm radius wood sample, assumed to be dry in the first model and wet in the second, when heated to 973.15 K. The reactions involved in the pyrolysis process are assumed to be endothermic. The diffusion of bounded water during the process is taken into account in the second model, where the heat transfer equation has been coupled to that of the diffusion of moisture. This model, although simple, provides more information on the drying and pyrolysis processes during the heating of wood, which is its originality. It can therefore be advantageously used to calculate the temperature distribution in a pyrolysis bed. The equations of the two models, discretized by an explicit finite difference method, were solved numerically by a program written in Python. The validation of both models against experimental work in the literature is satisfactory. The two models allow examination of the temperature profile in the radial direction of wood samples and highlighting of the effect of temperature on some thermal, physical and physicochemical characteristics.

International audience; Nowadays, the sustainability of Greek dairy cattle farms is questionable due to low competitiveness and high GHG emissions. In this context, the BIOCIRCULAR project, funded by the EYDE ETAK, developed a series of alternative practices focusing on precision agriculture principles. However, the adoption of any practice from farmers is not a given, and depends on several determinants. Hence, the objective of this study is to examine farmers’ adoption decisions regarding precision-agricultural practices in Greek dairy production systems, as well as the economic and environmental impacts of this adoption. In order to achieve this, a bio-economic model was developed based on mathematical programming methods. The proposed model simulates a large number of dairy cattle farms with or without crop production, including different management strategies and their relevant costs, and provides an environmental assessment of the adopted practices based on GHG emissions. Moreover, in order to analyze farmers’ adoption decisions, different policy measures, linked to various environmental outcomes, were examined. The results highlighted that the adoption of precision-agricultural practices led to significantly better economic and environmental outcomes. Furthermore, it was found that different levels of incentives can be efficiently targeted to encourage the adoption of new feeds and, more broadly, to secure the sustainability of the sector.

In Delay-Tolerant Networks (DTNs), humans are the main carriers of mobile devices, signifying that human mobility can be exploited by extracting nodes’ interests, social behavior, and spatiotemporal features for the performance evaluation of DTNs protocols. This paper presents a new mobility model that describes students’ daily activities in a campus environment. Unlike the conventional random walk models, which use a free space environment, our model includes a collision-avoidance technique that generates an escape path upon encountering obstacles of different shapes and sizes that obstruct pedestrian movement. We evaluate the model’s usefulness by comparing the distributions of its synthetic traces with realistic traces in terms of spatial, temporal, and connectivity features of human mobility. Similarly, we analyze the concept of dynamic movement clusters observed on the location-based trajectories of the studied real traces. The model synthetically generates traces with the distribution of the intercluster travel distance, intracluster travel distance, direction of movement, contact duration, intercontact time, and pause time similar to the distribution of real traces.

The atmospheric CO2 growth rates would have been much larger if natural sinks in the land biosphere and ocean had not removed over half of this anthropogenic CO2. As these CO2 emissions grew, uptake by the ocean increased in response to increases in atmospheric CO2 partial pressure (pCO2). On land, gross primary production also increased, but the dynamics of other key aspects of the land carbon cycle varied regionally. Over the past three decades, CO2 uptake by intact tropical humid forests declined, but these changes are offset by increased uptake across mid‐ and high‐latitudes. While there have been substantial improvements in our ability to study the carbon cycle, measurement and modeling gaps still limit our understanding of the processes driving its evolution. Continued ship‐based observations combined with expanded deployments of autonomous platforms are needed to quantify ocean‐atmosphere fluxes and interior ocean carbon storage on policy‐relevant spatial and temporal scales. There is also an urgent need for more comprehensive measurements of stocks, fluxes and atmospheric CO2 in humid tropical forests and across the Arctic and boreal regions, which are experiencing rapid change. Here, we review our understanding of the atmosphere, ocean, and land carbon cycles and their interactions, identify emerging measurement and modeling capabilities and gaps and the need for a sustainable, operational framework to ensure a scientific basis for carbon management.

Due to the increase in demand for building materials and their high prices in most developing countries, many researchers are trying to recycle waste for use as secondary raw materials. The aim of this study is the optimization of a mixture of compressed earth blocks based on two sediments. These sediments were tested through the Vicat test to determine the proportion of each one and the optimal water content. The mixtures were treated by adding 10% of blast furnace slag and different proportions of dissolved glass in a NaOH solution. The results indicated that the mixture of 70% Oran sediments with 30% Sidi Lakhdar sediments treated with 4% glass waste produced a CEB (compressed earth block) with high compressive strength with low porosity. In addition, formulated CEBs have a very good resistance to water immersion.

International audience; Electric Vehicle (EV) bidirectional charger technology is growing in importance. It defines the fact of returning the electricity stored in the batteries of EV to Grid (V2G), to Home (V2H), to Load (V2L), or in one word V2X mode. The EV onboard charger is divided into two parts: AC-DC and DC-DC converters. The isolated bidirectional DC-DC LLC resonant converter is used to improve the charger efficiency within both battery power and voltage ranges. It is controlled by varying the switching frequency based on a small signal modeling approach using the gain transfer function inversion method. The dimensions of the DC-DC LLC converter directly affect the charger cost. Moreover, they cause an important control frequency saturation zone, especially in V2X mode, where the switching frequency is out of the feasibility zone. The new challenge in this paper is to design an optimization strategy to minimize the LLC converter cost and improve the control frequency feasibility zone, for a wide variation of battery voltage and converter power, in the charging (G2V) and discharging (V2X) modes simultaneously. For our best knowledge, this optimization problem, in the case of a bidirectional (G2V and V2X) charger, is not yet considered in the literature. An optimal design that considers the control stability equations in the optimization algorithm is elaborated. The obtained results show a significant converter cost decrease and important expansion of control frequency feasibility zones. A comparative study between initial and optimized values, in G2V and V2X modes, is generated according to the converter efficiency.

Humanity is using mineral resources at an unprecedented level and demand will 1 continue to grow over the next few decades before stabilizing by the end of the century, due to 2 the economic development of populated countries and the energy and digital transitions. The 3 demand for raw materials must be estimated with a bottom-up and regionalized approach, and 4 the supply capacity with approaches coupling long-term prices with energy and production costs 5 controlled by the quality of the resource and the rate of technological improvement that depends on 6 thermodynamic limits. Such modelling provides arguments in favour of two classically opposed 7 visions of the future of mineral resources: an unaffordable increase in costs and prices following the 8 depletion of high quality deposits or, on the contrary, a favourable compensation by technological 9 improvements. Both views are true, but not at the same time. After a period of energy and 10 production cost gains, we now appear to be entering a pivotal period of long-term production 11 cost increases as we approach the minimum practical energy and thermodynamic limits for many 12 metals.

International audience; To face the new challenges caused by modern industry, logistics operations managers need to focus more on integrating sustainability goals, adapt to unexpected disruptions and find new strategies and models for logistics management. The COVID-19 pandemic has proven that unforeseen fragilities, negatively affecting the supply chain performance, can arise rapidly, and logistics systems may confront unprecedented vulnerabilities regarding network structure disruption and high demand fluctuations. The existing studies on a resilient logistics network design did not sufficiently consider sustainability aspects. In fact, they mainly addressed the independent planning of decision-making problems with economic objectives. To fill this research gap, this paper concentrates on the design of resilient and sustainable logistics networks under epidemic disruption and demand uncertainty. A two-stage stochastic mixed integer programming model is proposed to integrate key decisions of location–allocation, inventory and routing planning. Moreover, epidemic disruptions and demand uncertainty are incorporated through plausible scenarios using a Monte Carlo simulation. In addition, two resiliency strategies, namely, capacity augmentation and logistics collaboration, are included into the basic model in order to improve the resilience and the sustainability of a logistics chain network. Finally, numerical examples are presented to validate the proposed approach, evaluate the performance of the different design models and provide managerial insights. The obtained results show that the integration of two design strategies improves resilience and sustainability.

International audience; Faceshield brackets were among highly relevant products manufactured in various workshops, including Sigma Clermont, during the outbreak of COVID-19 to tackle acute shortages of personal protective equipment. However, many of these products are yet to be checked for appropriateness in design, quality, safety, comfort, and overall sustainability performance which might lead to unknown damages to human health and the environment. Thus, the main objective of this study is to evaluate the sustainable performance of Faceshield bracket manufacturing. Appropriate data are collected from designers, machine operators, and supplementary data are utilized from experts’ opinions and literature. A total of 38 carefully selected indicator sets are utilized while applying multicriteria decision-making methodology (MCDM) of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to evaluate the sustainability performance of these manufacturing processes. Evaluation is performed to examine the processes’ sustainability performance and associated indicator contribution based on the three dimensions. Results disclosed that 3D printing (score = 0.108) showed better performance for the environment, and injection molding showed better economic and social performance, with scores of 0.1922 and 0.160, respectively. A detailed contribution of each subcriteria for each sustainability dimension and each of the three processes as well as major contributing indicators are identified and discussed. Finally, overall performance was assessed using the total sum approach, and Borda count methodology and injection molding showed better sustainability performance in the manufacturing of Faceshield brackets considered with scores of 43 and 87, respectively. The authors believe that indicator selection approaches and overall methodology followed for this study will be relevant for future sustainability evaluation of engineering products.

Invasion rates have increased in the past 100 y irrespective of international conventions. What characterizes a successful invasion event? And how does genetic diversity translate into invasion success? Employing a whole-genome perspective using one of the most successful marine invasive species world-wide as a model, we resolve temporal invasion dynamics during independent invasion events in Eurasia. We reveal complex regionally independent invasion histories including cases of recurrent translocations, time-limited translocations, and stepping-stone range expansions with severe bottlenecks within the same species. Irrespective of these different invasion dynamics, which lead to contrasting patterns of genetic diversity, all nonindigenous populations are similarly successful. This illustrates that genetic diversity, per se, is not necessarily the driving force behind invasion success. Other factors such as propagule pressure and repeated introductions are an important contribution to facilitate successful invasions. This calls into question the dominant paradigm of the genetic paradox of invasions, i.e., the successful establishment of nonindigenous populations with low levels of genetic diversity. Significance A central goal in invasion genomics is to identify and determine the mechanisms that underlie the successful colonization, establishment, and subsequent range expansion of invasive populations of nonindigenous species. Using a whole-genome approach, we evaluate the importance of genetic diversity for the successful establishment of nonindigenous species. Our study shows that genetic diversity per se is not the major factor driving invasions, since we observed all possible scenarios with invasive populations showing reduced, similar but also increased, genetic diversity relative to the native population. Using coalescent methods, we reconstruct the demographic history of the invasion and infer the source population of each invasion event, which shows that propagule pressure and multiple introductions play an important role in determining invasion success.

In this paper, the thermal behavior of large pieces of wood pyrolysis has been modeled. Two mathematical models coupling heat transfer equations to chemical kinetics were used to predict the pyrolytic degradation of a 25 mm radius wood sample, assumed to be dry in the first model and wet in the second, when heated to 973.15 K. The reactions involved in the pyrolysis process are assumed to be endothermic. The diffusion of bounded water during the process is taken into account in the second model, where the heat transfer equation has been coupled to that of the diffusion of moisture. This model, although simple, provides more information on the drying and pyrolysis processes during the heating of wood, which is its originality. It can therefore be advantageously used to calculate the temperature distribution in a pyrolysis bed. The equations of the two models, discretized by an explicit finite difference method, were solved numerically by a program written in Python. The validation of both models against experimental work in the literature is satisfactory. The two models allow examination of the temperature profile in the radial direction of wood samples and highlighting of the effect of temperature on some thermal, physical and physicochemical characteristics.
