    International audience; Maintenance plays a major role in air transport management. Airlines are looking to reduce aircraft unavailability. Optimizing maintenance is a perspective to increase the operational potential of aircraft and offers novel managerial implications. Maintenance tasks are traditionally organized in periodic blocks of activities. In the modern aviation, more and more maintenance jobs can be performed between two flights, which is called Line Maintenance Scheduling Problem (LMSP). The expected goal of our paper is to propose an operational schedule that can be directly executed by maintainers, i.e. assigning a start time to each elementary activity and a resource to perform it. This new problem is named Operational Aircraft Line Maintenance Scheduling Problem (OALMSP). A scheduling assistant could help airlines to reduce maintenance costs and resource management. Planners have to respect task deadlines imposed by regulations, precedence constraints between certain operations and also ensure the availability of resources in order to perform specific actions. This problem is an extension of a Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP). In this article, we propose an industrial application of an automatic aircraft line maintenance scheduler based on a Constraint Programming (CP) model. The flexibility of our approach means we can easily adapt to airline use cases without changing the properties of the model. The optimization problem is generally made up of several objectives ordered according to their importance. The objectives are respectively to plan as many tasks as possible according to their priority, then to minimize both the use of resources and the deviation time between scheduled dates and target dates of tasks. The lexicographical order enables the use of human reasoning and the management of business priorities. A constructive search strategy is designed to compute a satisfying schedule within an acceptable execution time for industry application. A practical use case based on real airline data is presented and the results are compared with those found by an industrial solver taken as a reference.

    International audience; The contradiction between air traffic capacity and demand exerts congestion and delay, resulting in airspace operating at or above its capacity. This paper proposes a performance comparison of two arrival route topologies in Terminal Maneuvering Area (TMA) with a tailored optimization algorithm, including Point Merge System (PMS) and trombone paradigms. We aim at enhancing the capacity of arrival topologies and efficiently landing more aircraft through identifying which topological route is better suitable for current traffic demands. The problem involves integrating and sequencing arrival operations into the TMA. A mathematical model is developed for which entry times, entry speeds and flight routes are regarded as decision variables. The operation constraints of this optimization modelling correspond to detection of potential conflicts between consecutive aircraft at merging waypoints and on the same link segments, based on the safety separation standards. The objective function is set to minimize the delay and speed deviation for all flights in the optimized system. Because of the highly combinatorial nature of this problem and the non-deterministic polynomial hard (NP-hard), a tailored selective simulated annealing algorithm is proposed to optimally make decisions for the arrival traffic flow. Finally, the validation of our approach has been performed for Ataturk Airport in Turkey, by using 11 different operation scenarios of arrival demands. For lower demands, all aircraft can be positively scheduled, while for more than 80% extra scenarios based on the regular traffic demand, there exist some remaining conflicts for the situations. The results illustrate that, compared with the trombone procedure, PMS paradigm could enhance the arrival capacity and has better performance throughout the arrival procedure. Additionally, more flexible sequence position shift is possible in PMS, and it has the ability to accommodate high-density flight operating environment.

    Various pro-cycling policies emerged around the world with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. France experimented with a €50 bike repair subsidy. Our questionnaire survey (n = 7343) focuses on beneficiaries’ sociological profiles. Despite its success in quantitative terms, the repair subsidy benefited more regular cyclists—who cycle daily—and people who are confident cycling in urban areas. Women were more likely to benefit than men, and people in low-income households more than those in high-income households. Because these populations are usually underrepresented among cyclists in France, the scheme may appear to have reduced inequities in cycling. However, the scheme could have reached out more to the low-income population who were largely unaware of it. This selectivity is partly explained by awareness of the subsidy, which is lower among the younger and the less educated part of the population. Our survey shows that the scheme is selective primarily because of its design. It would have been necessary to accompany it with measures specifically designed for vulnerable groups.     International audience; Railway traffic management requires a timely and accurate redefinition of routes and schedules in response to detected perturbations of the original timetable. To date, most of the (automated) solutions to this problem require a central authority to make decisions for all the trains in a given control area. An appealing alternative is to consider trains as intelligent agents able to self-organize and determine the best traffic management strategy. This could lead to more scalable and resilient approaches, that can also take into account the real-time mobility demand. In this paper, we formalize the concept of railway traffic self-organization and we present an original design that enables its real-world deployment. We detail the principles at the basis of the sub-processes brought forth by the trains in a decentralized way, explaining their sequence and interaction. Moreover, we propose a preliminary proof of concept based on a realistic setting representing traffic in a French control area. The results allow conjecturing that self-organizing railway traffic management may be a viable option, and foster further research in this direction.

    This study addresses the integration of the railway and airline scheduling problems, in order to offer passengers smooth transfers between rail and air. This paper focuses on optimizing the air and rail timetables at 18 major European airports including three hubs and their associated train stations. A multimodal passenger demand simulation, using constraint programming and based on real data, is proposed. Six days in December 2019 are analyzed, and ten simulations per day are performed. These instances are publicly released. The air-rail timetable synchronization is applied to these 60 simulated days. Three scenarios are tested in which each operator agrees to change its schedule or not. Results show that changing only 13% of European flights by 11 minutes on average could increase the number of suitable connections for passengers by 60%. In addition, if both airlines and railway operators adapt their schedules, passenger comfort is improved and operator costs are reduced, even more so than with unilateral changes.

    Paris-Lyon is the busiest High-Speed Line in Europe and has been open to open access competition since 18 December 2021. The purpose of this article is to explore the first effects on the price and frequency of competition between the Italian company Trenitalia and the French incumbent SNCF. The analysis is based on a large database (n = 971) collected from September 2019 to July 2022. The main challenge is to isolate the COVID-19 pandemic effect from the competition. A similar route without competition (Paris-Bordeaux) was selected to control the effects. The method relies on a descriptive analysis with an original dynamic timetable approach in the discussion. The results highlight an increase of frequency by 5% and a decrease in price by 10%. The prices charged by the newcomer are lower than those of the incumbent (-30% to -40%) though without enough volume to change the global equilibrium. Although far from a big bang, the comparison with the control route suggests a positive effect on price that moderates the economic catch-up effect following the COVID-19 pandemic in an inflationary context. More specifically, SNCF appears relatively insensitive to competitive pressure from Trenitalia.     International audience; Despite the skyrocketing growth in recent decades of environmental studies on ports and shipping, their local health impacts remain largely under-researched. This article tackles this gap in research by statistically analyzing data on global shipping flows across nearly 5000 ports in 35 OECD countries between 2001 and 2018. The different traffic types, from containers to bulk and passengers, are analyzed jointly with data on natural conditions, air pollution, socio-economic indicators, and public health. The principal results show that port regions pollute more than non-port regions on average, while health impacts vary according to the size and specialization of the port region. Three types of port regions are clearly differentiated: industrial, intermediate, and metropolitan port regions.

    International audience; District heating networks (DHNs) are critical infrastructures that ensure production and residents' living. Analyzing vulnerability characteristics of DHNs is of great significance in heating safety decision-making. In this study, we analyze the structure, function, operation, and failure characteristics of DHNs and propose vulnerability analysis methods. We develop failure simulation models under fully-controllable (FC) and uncontrollable (UC) conditions for six failure scenarios based on component importance. To verify the proposed methods' effectiveness, we applied them to a DHN in a Chinese city. Upon analyzing the appositeness of various vulnerability assessment indicators, we find that the heat source connectivity efficiency loss rate, established based on hydraulic distribution in DHNs, can effectively characterize both topological and functional vulnerability. Our analysis also reveals that controllable DHNs, which evenly distribute heat supply among connected users for fairness, can result in lower flow and greater functional vulnerability compared to UC DHNs. In particular, under large area failure (AF) scenarios, the average functional vulnerability of UC DHNs increases by 27.59% to 38.30% compared to small-AF scenarios, while that of controllable DHNs increases by 103.78% to 120.58%.     The use of Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) in segmenting flight phases is a compelling approach with significant implications for aviation and aerospace research. It leverages the temporal sequences of flight data to delineate various phases of an aircraft’s journey, making it a valuable tool for enhancing the anal- ysis of flight performance and safety. In this work, we implement a multivariate HMM to identify 6 flight phases: taxi, takeoff, climb, cruise, approach and rollout. We reach a median global accuracy of about 97% over a sample of several thousand flights with a very low number of decoded unlikely transitions. Regarding several performance metrics, our method is competitive with existing methods in the litera- ture, such as fuzzy logic. Additionally, it provides, for each point of the flight, a probability of belonging to each phase. Even in situations where there are missing values in the data, HMMs remain effective, ensuring that no critical information is lost during the segmentation process. We show that HMMs work seamlessly with the fine granularity of Flight Data Recorder (FDR) data. HMMs offer remarkable flex- ibility and adaptability, proving particularly effective when the number or order of phases is unknown or not predetermined, as is often the case with complex flight scenarios such as helicopter flights. This adaptability is crucial for handling the diverse range of flight operations that differ from one aircraft to another. An example is given with the segmentation of an Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) helicopter flight operated by the Swedish National Police.

    AbstractLarge explosive volcanic eruptions from island arcs pour pyroclastic currents into marine basins, impacting ecosystems and generating tsunamis that threaten coastal communities and infrastructures. Risk assessments require robust records of such highly hazardous events, which is challenging as most of the products lie buried under the sea. Here we report the discovery by IODP Expedition 398 of a giant rhyolitic pumice deposit emplaced 520 ± 10 ky ago at water depths of 200 to 1000 m during a high-intensity, shallow submarine eruption of ancestral Santorini Volcano. Pyroclastic currents discharged into the sea transformed into turbidity currents and slurries, forming a >89 ± 8 km3 volcaniclastic megaturbidite up to 150 m thick in the surrounding marine basins, while breaching of the sea surface by the eruption column laid down veneers of ignimbrite on three islands. The eruption is one of the largest recorded on the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, and highlights the hazards from submarine explosive eruptions.

    International audience; Maintenance plays a major role in air transport management. Airlines are looking to reduce aircraft unavailability. Optimizing maintenance is a perspective to increase the operational potential of aircraft and offers novel managerial implications. Maintenance tasks are traditionally organized in periodic blocks of activities. In the modern aviation, more and more maintenance jobs can be performed between two flights, which is called Line Maintenance Scheduling Problem (LMSP). The expected goal of our paper is to propose an operational schedule that can be directly executed by maintainers, i.e. assigning a start time to each elementary activity and a resource to perform it. This new problem is named Operational Aircraft Line Maintenance Scheduling Problem (OALMSP). A scheduling assistant could help airlines to reduce maintenance costs and resource management. Planners have to respect task deadlines imposed by regulations, precedence constraints between certain operations and also ensure the availability of resources in order to perform specific actions. This problem is an extension of a Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP). In this article, we propose an industrial application of an automatic aircraft line maintenance scheduler based on a Constraint Programming (CP) model. The flexibility of our approach means we can easily adapt to airline use cases without changing the properties of the model. The optimization problem is generally made up of several objectives ordered according to their importance. The objectives are respectively to plan as many tasks as possible according to their priority, then to minimize both the use of resources and the deviation time between scheduled dates and target dates of tasks. The lexicographical order enables the use of human reasoning and the management of business priorities. A constructive search strategy is designed to compute a satisfying schedule within an acceptable execution time for industry application. A practical use case based on real airline data is presented and the results are compared with those found by an industrial solver taken as a reference.

    International audience; The contradiction between air traffic capacity and demand exerts congestion and delay, resulting in airspace operating at or above its capacity. This paper proposes a performance comparison of two arrival route topologies in Terminal Maneuvering Area (TMA) with a tailored optimization algorithm, including Point Merge System (PMS) and trombone paradigms. We aim at enhancing the capacity of arrival topologies and efficiently landing more aircraft through identifying which topological route is better suitable for current traffic demands. The problem involves integrating and sequencing arrival operations into the TMA. A mathematical model is developed for which entry times, entry speeds and flight routes are regarded as decision variables. The operation constraints of this optimization modelling correspond to detection of potential conflicts between consecutive aircraft at merging waypoints and on the same link segments, based on the safety separation standards. The objective function is set to minimize the delay and speed deviation for all flights in the optimized system. Because of the highly combinatorial nature of this problem and the non-deterministic polynomial hard (NP-hard), a tailored selective simulated annealing algorithm is proposed to optimally make decisions for the arrival traffic flow. Finally, the validation of our approach has been performed for Ataturk Airport in Turkey, by using 11 different operation scenarios of arrival demands. For lower demands, all aircraft can be positively scheduled, while for more than 80% extra scenarios based on the regular traffic demand, there exist some remaining conflicts for the situations. The results illustrate that, compared with the trombone procedure, PMS paradigm could enhance the arrival capacity and has better performance throughout the arrival procedure. Additionally, more flexible sequence position shift is possible in PMS, and it has the ability to accommodate high-density flight operating environment.

    Various pro-cycling policies emerged around the world with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. France experimented with a €50 bike repair subsidy. Our questionnaire survey (n = 7343) focuses on beneficiaries’ sociological profiles. Despite its success in quantitative terms, the repair subsidy benefited more regular cyclists—who cycle daily—and people who are confident cycling in urban areas. Women were more likely to benefit than men, and people in low-income households more than those in high-income households. Because these populations are usually underrepresented among cyclists in France, the scheme may appear to have reduced inequities in cycling. However, the scheme could have reached out more to the low-income population who were largely unaware of it. This selectivity is partly explained by awareness of the subsidy, which is lower among the younger and the less educated part of the population. Our survey shows that the scheme is selective primarily because of its design. It would have been necessary to accompany it with measures specifically designed for vulnerable groups.     International audience; Railway traffic management requires a timely and accurate redefinition of routes and schedules in response to detected perturbations of the original timetable. To date, most of the (automated) solutions to this problem require a central authority to make decisions for all the trains in a given control area. An appealing alternative is to consider trains as intelligent agents able to self-organize and determine the best traffic management strategy. This could lead to more scalable and resilient approaches, that can also take into account the real-time mobility demand. In this paper, we formalize the concept of railway traffic self-organization and we present an original design that enables its real-world deployment. We detail the principles at the basis of the sub-processes brought forth by the trains in a decentralized way, explaining their sequence and interaction. Moreover, we propose a preliminary proof of concept based on a realistic setting representing traffic in a French control area. The results allow conjecturing that self-organizing railway traffic management may be a viable option, and foster further research in this direction.

    This study addresses the integration of the railway and airline scheduling problems, in order to offer passengers smooth transfers between rail and air. This paper focuses on optimizing the air and rail timetables at 18 major European airports including three hubs and their associated train stations. A multimodal passenger demand simulation, using constraint programming and based on real data, is proposed. Six days in December 2019 are analyzed, and ten simulations per day are performed. These instances are publicly released. The air-rail timetable synchronization is applied to these 60 simulated days. Three scenarios are tested in which each operator agrees to change its schedule or not. Results show that changing only 13% of European flights by 11 minutes on average could increase the number of suitable connections for passengers by 60%. In addition, if both airlines and railway operators adapt their schedules, passenger comfort is improved and operator costs are reduced, even more so than with unilateral changes.

    Paris-Lyon is the busiest High-Speed Line in Europe and has been open to open access competition since 18 December 2021. The purpose of this article is to explore the first effects on the price and frequency of competition between the Italian company Trenitalia and the French incumbent SNCF. The analysis is based on a large database (n = 971) collected from September 2019 to July 2022. The main challenge is to isolate the COVID-19 pandemic effect from the competition. A similar route without competition (Paris-Bordeaux) was selected to control the effects. The method relies on a descriptive analysis with an original dynamic timetable approach in the discussion. The results highlight an increase of frequency by 5% and a decrease in price by 10%. The prices charged by the newcomer are lower than those of the incumbent (-30% to -40%) though without enough volume to change the global equilibrium. Although far from a big bang, the comparison with the control route suggests a positive effect on price that moderates the economic catch-up effect following the COVID-19 pandemic in an inflationary context. More specifically, SNCF appears relatively insensitive to competitive pressure from Trenitalia.     International audience; Despite the skyrocketing growth in recent decades of environmental studies on ports and shipping, their local health impacts remain largely under-researched. This article tackles this gap in research by statistically analyzing data on global shipping flows across nearly 5000 ports in 35 OECD countries between 2001 and 2018. The different traffic types, from containers to bulk and passengers, are analyzed jointly with data on natural conditions, air pollution, socio-economic indicators, and public health. The principal results show that port regions pollute more than non-port regions on average, while health impacts vary according to the size and specialization of the port region. Three types of port regions are clearly differentiated: industrial, intermediate, and metropolitan port regions.

    International audience; District heating networks (DHNs) are critical infrastructures that ensure production and residents' living. Analyzing vulnerability characteristics of DHNs is of great significance in heating safety decision-making. In this study, we analyze the structure, function, operation, and failure characteristics of DHNs and propose vulnerability analysis methods. We develop failure simulation models under fully-controllable (FC) and uncontrollable (UC) conditions for six failure scenarios based on component importance. To verify the proposed methods' effectiveness, we applied them to a DHN in a Chinese city. Upon analyzing the appositeness of various vulnerability assessment indicators, we find that the heat source connectivity efficiency loss rate, established based on hydraulic distribution in DHNs, can effectively characterize both topological and functional vulnerability. Our analysis also reveals that controllable DHNs, which evenly distribute heat supply among connected users for fairness, can result in lower flow and greater functional vulnerability compared to UC DHNs. In particular, under large area failure (AF) scenarios, the average functional vulnerability of UC DHNs increases by 27.59% to 38.30% compared to small-AF scenarios, while that of controllable DHNs increases by 103.78% to 120.58%.     The use of Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) in segmenting flight phases is a compelling approach with significant implications for aviation and aerospace research. It leverages the temporal sequences of flight data to delineate various phases of an aircraft’s journey, making it a valuable tool for enhancing the anal- ysis of flight performance and safety. In this work, we implement a multivariate HMM to identify 6 flight phases: taxi, takeoff, climb, cruise, approach and rollout. We reach a median global accuracy of about 97% over a sample of several thousand flights with a very low number of decoded unlikely transitions. Regarding several performance metrics, our method is competitive with existing methods in the litera- ture, such as fuzzy logic. Additionally, it provides, for each point of the flight, a probability of belonging to each phase. Even in situations where there are missing values in the data, HMMs remain effective, ensuring that no critical information is lost during the segmentation process. We show that HMMs work seamlessly with the fine granularity of Flight Data Recorder (FDR) data. HMMs offer remarkable flex- ibility and adaptability, proving particularly effective when the number or order of phases is unknown or not predetermined, as is often the case with complex flight scenarios such as helicopter flights. This adaptability is crucial for handling the diverse range of flight operations that differ from one aircraft to another. An example is given with the segmentation of an Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) helicopter flight operated by the Swedish National Police.

    AbstractLarge explosive volcanic eruptions from island arcs pour pyroclastic currents into marine basins, impacting ecosystems and generating tsunamis that threaten coastal communities and infrastructures. Risk assessments require robust records of such highly hazardous events, which is challenging as most of the products lie buried under the sea. Here we report the discovery by IODP Expedition 398 of a giant rhyolitic pumice deposit emplaced 520 ± 10 ky ago at water depths of 200 to 1000 m during a high-intensity, shallow submarine eruption of ancestral Santorini Volcano. Pyroclastic currents discharged into the sea transformed into turbidity currents and slurries, forming a >89 ± 8 km3 volcaniclastic megaturbidite up to 150 m thick in the surrounding marine basins, while breaching of the sea surface by the eruption column laid down veneers of ignimbrite on three islands. The eruption is one of the largest recorded on the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, and highlights the hazards from submarine explosive eruptions.
