    Wind energy has achieved prominence in renewable energy production. There fore, it is necessary to develop a diagnosis system and fault-tolerant control to protect the system and to prevent unscheduled shutdowns. The presented study aims to provide an experimental analysis of a speed sensor fault by hybrid active fault-tolerant control (AFTC) for a wind energy conversion system (WECS) based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). The hybrid AFTC switches between a traditional controller based on proportional integral (PI) controllers under normal conditions and a robust backstepping controller system without a speed sensor to avoid any deterioration caused by the sensor fault. A sliding mode observer is used to estimate the PMSG rotor position. The proposed controller architecture can be designed for performance and robustness separately. Finally, the proposed methodwas successfully tested in an experimental set up using a dSPACE 1104 platform. In this experimental system, the wind turbine with a generator connection via a mechanical gear is emulated by a PMSM engine with controled speed through a voltage inverter. The obtained experimental results show clearly that the proposed method is able to guarantee service production continuity for the WECS in adequate transition.

    Abstract Unlike prior studies, this paper examines the nonlinear and distributional asymmetric effects of natural resources abundance on energy consumption in Pakistan controlling for the effects of economic growth, oil prices, exports diversification and economic complexity. Using quarterly data over the period 1972–2018, we employed several advanced econometric techniques such as quantile unit root test developed by Koenker and Xiao (2004) is used to check the stationarity of the variables at different quantiles. Afterwards, the quantile ARDL model is employed to account for the distributional asymmetry between energy consumption and its determinants. Lastly, we apply quantile causality test of Troster (2018) in order to examine causality at different quantiles. The empirical results show that speed of adjustment parameter is significantly negative at the low quantiles (0.05 to 0.30) ensuring thus the stability of ARDL model at these quantiles. Furthermore, natural resources have a positive contemporaneous effect on energy consumption and a negative one-period lagged effect, leading to a positive cumulative short-run effect of natural resources on energy consumption. Similarly, economic growth and oil prices add to energy consumption. Export diversification does not determine energy consumption in the short-run but economic complexity influences energy consumption contemporaneously and negatively at all quantiles but the extreme ones. The causality analysis reveals the presence of causal relation running from natural resources, economic growth and oil prices, to energy consumption at all quantiles except at the two highest quantiles (0.90 and 0.95). Energy consumption is cause of exports diversification and economic complexity. This empirical evidence opens new insights for policy makers to use natural resources as economic tool to maintain energy demand for long run economic growth.

    The restoration of contaminated sites is attracting increasing attention because of environmental considerations. Barrier walls using cement-based solidified soil are a popular and effective method for enclosing contaminated sites. However, the working environment of cement-based solidified soils is often complicated and results in concern about the durability of the walls. Hence, the deterioration behaviour of solidified soils under a working environment should be investigated. A type of marine soft clay deposited in the coastal Lianyungang region of east China was solidified by a cement–metakaolin composite; then, the specimens were cured under standard, saline solution and cycled freeze–thaw environments. When the specimens reached the designed curing periods, the unconfined compressive strength, mass loss, pH value and mesostructure were determined. The results show that (a) both saline soaking and cycled freeze–thaw environments unavoidably reduce the durability of cement-based solidified soils and (b) metakaolin incorporation can effectively resist the deterioration behaviour of solidified soils under such environments. In this case, the optimal incorporation ratio is approximately 3·0%, and (c) although strength enhancement by chloride (Cl−) ions was primarily inhibited by the water medium, metakaolin incorporation suppresses cracking on the surface and strengthens the integrity of the solidified soils.

    International audience; The novel stochastic model to produce voiced sounds proposed in this paper uses the source-filter Fant theory to generate voice signals and, consequently, it does not consider the coupling between the vocal tract and the vocal folds. Two novelties are proposed in the paper. The first one is the new model obtained from the unification of two other deterministic one mass-spring-damper models obtained from the literature and the second one is to build a stochastic model which can generate and control the level of jitter resulting even in hoarse voice signals or with pathological characteristics but using a simpler model than those ones discussed in the literature. An inverse stochastic problem is then solved for two cases, considering a normal voice and other obtained from a case of paralysis on the vocal folds. The parameters of the model are identified in the two cases allowing the validation of the model.

    This research aims to analyse land use conflicts mainly caused by infrastructural development projects in the developing countries. For this purpose, qualitative data is gathered which is frequently published on land use conflicts against the development related infrastructure projects in Brazil, China, India, Indonesia and Pakistan. It identifies and defines land use conflicts, their dynamic features and contestations. The results reveal as to how the conflicts have been germinated by the property and human right violators? Further, it also focuses on the governance roles and responsibilities, the institutional inconsistency towards justice, and the local population’s mistrust in the respective case study areas. The analysis concludes with an overview of the root causes and consequences of land use conflicts, by indicating as to how land use decisions for infrastructural settings have changed rural economy, and induced local population to displace and oppose the projects.     This paper is concerned with the design of a human-in-the-loop system for deployment on a smart pedelec (e-bike). From the control-theoretic perspective, the goal is not only to use the power assistance of the e-bike to reject disturbances along the route but also to manage the possibly competitive interactions between a human and the motor intervention. Managing the competitive/cooperative nature of the interactions is crucial for applications in which we wish to control physical aspects of the cycling behavior (e.g. heart rate and breathing rate). The basis of the control is a pitchfork bifurcation system, modeling the interactions, augmented using ideas from gain-scheduling. In vivo experiments have been conducted, showing the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. Comment: 7 figures

    As a class of context-aware systems, context-aware service recommendation aims to bind high-quality services to users while taking into account their context requirements, including invocation time, location, social profiles, connectivity, and so on. However, current CASR approaches are not scalable with the huge amount of service data (QoS and context information, users reviews and feedbacks). In addition, they lack a rich representation of contextual information as they adopt a simple matrix view. Moreover, current CASR approaches adopt the traditional user-service relation and they do not allow for multi-relational interactions between users and services in different contexts. To offer a scalable and context-sensitive service recommendation with great analysis and learning capabilities, we provide a rich and multi-relational representation of the CASR knowledge, based on the concept of knowledge graph. The constructed context-aware service knowledge graph (C-SKG) is, then, transformed into a low-dimentional vector space to facilitate its processing. For this purpose, we adopt Dilated Recurrent Neural Networks to propose a context-aware knowledge graph embedding, based on the principles of first-order and subgraph-aware proximity. Finally, a recommendation algorithm is defined to deliver the top-rated services according to the target user's context. Experiments have proved the accuracy and scalability of our CASR approach.

    The task of authorship verification consists in detecting whether two texts have been written by the same person. This paper describes the CLG Authorship Analytics software, which implements several individual methods as well as a stacked generalization system for authorship verification. The approach relies primarily on ensemble learning methods, i.e. repeatedly sampling the data in order to capture the invariant stylistic patterns. The approach is tested through a series of experiments designed to test the ability of the system to generalize, depending on various parameters.     Abstract We investigate inference of variable-length codes in other domains of computer science, such as noisy information transmission or information retrieval-storage: in such topics, traditionally mostly constant-length codewords act. The study is relied upon the two concepts of independent and closed sets: given an alphabet A and a binary relation τ ⊆ A ⁎ × A ⁎ , a set X ⊆ A ⁎ is τ-independent if τ ( X ) ∩ X = ∅ ; X is τ-closed if τ ( X ) ⊆ X . We focus to those word relations whose images are computed by applying some peculiar combinations of deletion, insertion, or substitution. In particular, characterizations of variable-length codes that are maximal in the families of τ-independent or τ-closed codes are provided.

    ABSTRACTSecondary cities are home to most of the world’s urban populations vulnerable to climate change, yet researchers and policymakers have devoted less attention to them than large and megacities. To help address this gap, this paper explores the relationship between incomplete decentralized governance, climate change, and urban resilience. It does through the case studies of secondary cities of Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. Secondary cities are of importance because they are the fastest growing cities in the Global South but also because they have weaker capacity to address climate risks. Through these case studies, the paper draws comparisons between the different cases to look at the linkages between decentralization and urban resilience in secondary cities. Overall, it argues that climate governance, due to the retention of power and resources by central bureaucrats along with fragmented governance structures, and misaligned incentive structures which prioritize economic growth over climate protection have undermined resilience building and contributed to the uneven distribution of climate risks in these cities.

    Wind energy has achieved prominence in renewable energy production. There fore, it is necessary to develop a diagnosis system and fault-tolerant control to protect the system and to prevent unscheduled shutdowns. The presented study aims to provide an experimental analysis of a speed sensor fault by hybrid active fault-tolerant control (AFTC) for a wind energy conversion system (WECS) based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). The hybrid AFTC switches between a traditional controller based on proportional integral (PI) controllers under normal conditions and a robust backstepping controller system without a speed sensor to avoid any deterioration caused by the sensor fault. A sliding mode observer is used to estimate the PMSG rotor position. The proposed controller architecture can be designed for performance and robustness separately. Finally, the proposed methodwas successfully tested in an experimental set up using a dSPACE 1104 platform. In this experimental system, the wind turbine with a generator connection via a mechanical gear is emulated by a PMSM engine with controled speed through a voltage inverter. The obtained experimental results show clearly that the proposed method is able to guarantee service production continuity for the WECS in adequate transition.

    Abstract Unlike prior studies, this paper examines the nonlinear and distributional asymmetric effects of natural resources abundance on energy consumption in Pakistan controlling for the effects of economic growth, oil prices, exports diversification and economic complexity. Using quarterly data over the period 1972–2018, we employed several advanced econometric techniques such as quantile unit root test developed by Koenker and Xiao (2004) is used to check the stationarity of the variables at different quantiles. Afterwards, the quantile ARDL model is employed to account for the distributional asymmetry between energy consumption and its determinants. Lastly, we apply quantile causality test of Troster (2018) in order to examine causality at different quantiles. The empirical results show that speed of adjustment parameter is significantly negative at the low quantiles (0.05 to 0.30) ensuring thus the stability of ARDL model at these quantiles. Furthermore, natural resources have a positive contemporaneous effect on energy consumption and a negative one-period lagged effect, leading to a positive cumulative short-run effect of natural resources on energy consumption. Similarly, economic growth and oil prices add to energy consumption. Export diversification does not determine energy consumption in the short-run but economic complexity influences energy consumption contemporaneously and negatively at all quantiles but the extreme ones. The causality analysis reveals the presence of causal relation running from natural resources, economic growth and oil prices, to energy consumption at all quantiles except at the two highest quantiles (0.90 and 0.95). Energy consumption is cause of exports diversification and economic complexity. This empirical evidence opens new insights for policy makers to use natural resources as economic tool to maintain energy demand for long run economic growth.

    The restoration of contaminated sites is attracting increasing attention because of environmental considerations. Barrier walls using cement-based solidified soil are a popular and effective method for enclosing contaminated sites. However, the working environment of cement-based solidified soils is often complicated and results in concern about the durability of the walls. Hence, the deterioration behaviour of solidified soils under a working environment should be investigated. A type of marine soft clay deposited in the coastal Lianyungang region of east China was solidified by a cement–metakaolin composite; then, the specimens were cured under standard, saline solution and cycled freeze–thaw environments. When the specimens reached the designed curing periods, the unconfined compressive strength, mass loss, pH value and mesostructure were determined. The results show that (a) both saline soaking and cycled freeze–thaw environments unavoidably reduce the durability of cement-based solidified soils and (b) metakaolin incorporation can effectively resist the deterioration behaviour of solidified soils under such environments. In this case, the optimal incorporation ratio is approximately 3·0%, and (c) although strength enhancement by chloride (Cl−) ions was primarily inhibited by the water medium, metakaolin incorporation suppresses cracking on the surface and strengthens the integrity of the solidified soils.

The first one is the new model obtained from the unification of two other deterministic one mass-spring-damper models obtained from the literature and the second one is to build a stochastic model which can generate and control the level of jitter resulting even in hoarse voice signals or with pathological characteristics but using a simpler model than those ones discussed in the literature. An inverse stochastic problem is then solved for two cases, considering a normal voice and other obtained from a case of paralysis on the vocal folds. The parameters of the model are identified in the two cases allowing the validation of the model.

    This research aims to analyse land use conflicts mainly caused by infrastructural development projects in the developing countries. For this purpose, qualitative data is gathered which is frequently published on land use conflicts against the development related infrastructure projects in Brazil, China, India, Indonesia and Pakistan. It identifies and defines land use conflicts, their dynamic features and contestations. The results reveal as to how the conflicts have been germinated by the property and human right violators? Further, it also focuses on the governance roles and responsibilities, the institutional inconsistency towards justice, and the local population’s mistrust in the respective case study areas. The analysis concludes with an overview of the root causes and consequences of land use conflicts, by indicating as to how land use decisions for infrastructural settings have changed rural economy, and induced local population to displace and oppose the projects.     This paper is concerned with the design of a human-in-the-loop system for deployment on a smart pedelec (e-bike). From the control-theoretic perspective, the goal is not only to use the power assistance of the e-bike to reject disturbances along the route but also to manage the possibly competitive interactions between a human and the motor intervention. Managing the competitive/cooperative nature of the interactions is crucial for applications in which we wish to control physical aspects of the cycling behavior (e.g. heart rate and breathing rate). The basis of the control is a pitchfork bifurcation system, modeling the interactions, augmented using ideas from gain-scheduling. In vivo experiments have been conducted, showing the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. Comment: 7 figures

    As a class of context-aware systems, context-aware service recommendation aims to bind high-quality services to users while taking into account their context requirements, including invocation time, location, social profiles, connectivity, and so on. However, current CASR approaches are not scalable with the huge amount of service data (QoS and context information, users reviews and feedbacks). In addition, they lack a rich representation of contextual information as they adopt a simple matrix view. Moreover, current CASR approaches adopt the traditional user-service relation and they do not allow for multi-relational interactions between users and services in different contexts. To offer a scalable and context-sensitive service recommendation with great analysis and learning capabilities, we provide a rich and multi-relational representation of the CASR knowledge, based on the concept of knowledge graph. The constructed context-aware service knowledge graph (C-SKG) is, then, transformed into a low-dimentional vector space to facilitate its processing. For this purpose, we adopt Dilated Recurrent Neural Networks to propose a context-aware knowledge graph embedding, based on the principles of first-order and subgraph-aware proximity. Finally, a recommendation algorithm is defined to deliver the top-rated services according to the target user's context. Experiments have proved the accuracy and scalability of our CASR approach.

    The task of authorship verification consists in detecting whether two texts have been written by the same person. This paper describes the CLG Authorship Analytics software, which implements several individual methods as well as a stacked generalization system for authorship verification. The approach relies primarily on ensemble learning methods, i.e. repeatedly sampling the data in order to capture the invariant stylistic patterns. The approach is tested through a series of experiments designed to test the ability of the system to generalize, depending on various parameters.     Abstract We investigate inference of variable-length codes in other domains of computer science, such as noisy information transmission or information retrieval-storage: in such topics, traditionally mostly constant-length codewords act. The study is relied upon the two concepts of independent and closed sets: given an alphabet A and a binary relation τ ⊆ A ⁎ × A ⁎ , a set X ⊆ A ⁎ is τ-independent if τ ( X ) ∩ X = ∅ ; X is τ-closed if τ ( X ) ⊆ X . We focus to those word relations whose images are computed by applying some peculiar combinations of deletion, insertion, or substitution. In particular, characterizations of variable-length codes that are maximal in the families of τ-independent or τ-closed codes are provided.

Secondary cities are of importance because they are the fastest growing cities in the Global South but also because they have weaker capacity to address climate risks. Through these case studies, the paper draws comparisons between the different cases to look at the linkages between decentralization and urban resilience in secondary cities. Overall, it argues that climate governance, due to the retention of power and resources by central bureaucrats along with fragmented governance structures, and misaligned incentive structures which prioritize economic growth over climate protection have undermined resilience building and contributed to the uneven distribution of climate risks in these cities.
