International audience; Leveraging a high resolution geological and structural dataset acquired over decades of fieldwork, we build the 3D structural model of a portion of the highly deformed core of the Alpine orogen, in the Northern Aosta Valley. The model represents tectonic contacts separating the tectono-metamorphic units outcropping along the section between Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa, and it covers an area of ca. 1500 km2. The input source data include original 1:10,000 geological surveys synthetised in a 1:75,000 tectonic map, and a dense database of structural stations. After a first orientation statistics study of the structural field database, our workflow develops through structural interpretation in vertical cross-sections that allow including in the modelling process structural drivers such as crosscutting relationships, interference patterns, kinematic constraints and fold morphology from detailed field studies. Three-dimensional interpolation on a tetrahedral mesh using the implicit Discrete Smooth Interpolator method follows, using also foliation and fold axes data as interpolation constraints. After describing the workflow and the model, we discuss the difficulties of modelling in polydeformed metamorphic complexes. In particular, we address the issue of modelling shear zones, refolded, isoclinal and/or recumbent folds and dense networks of faults, that characterise the geology of the Northern Aosta Valley.

International audience; Accurate and timely monitoring of forest canopy height is critical for assessing forest dynamics, biodiversity, carbon sequestration as well as forest degradation and deforestation. Recent advances in deep learning techniques, coupled with the vast amount of spaceborne remote sensing data offer an unprecedented opportunity to map canopy height at high spatial and temporal resolutions. Current techniques for wall-to-wall canopy height mapping correlate remotely sensed information from optical and radar sensors in the 2D space to the vertical structure of trees using lidar's 3D measurement abilities serving as height proxies. While studies making use of deep learning algorithms have shown promising performances for the accurate mapping of canopy height, they have limitations due to the type of architectures and loss functions employed. Moreover, mapping canopy height over tropical forests remains poorly studied, and the accurate height estimation of tall canopies is a challenge due to signal saturation from optical and radar sensors, persistent cloud cover, and sometimes limited penetration capabilities of lidar instruments. In this study, we map heights at 10 m resolution across the diverse landscape of Ghana with a new vision transformer (ViT) model, dubbed Hy-TeC, optimized concurrently with a classification (discrete) and a regression (continuous) loss function. This model achieves significantly higher accuracy than previously employed convolutional-based approaches (ConvNets) optimized with only a continuous loss function. Hy-TeC results show that our proposed discrete/continuous loss formulation significantly increases the sensitivity for very tall trees (i.e., > 35 m). Overall, Hy-TeC has significantly reduced bias (0.8 m) and higher accuracy (RMSE = 6.6 m) over tropical forests for which other approaches show poorer performance and oftentimes a saturation effect. The height maps generated by Hy-TeC also have better ground sampling distance and better sensitivity to sparse vegetation. Over these areas, Hy-TeC showed an RMSE of 3.1 m in comparison to a reference dataset while the baseline ConvNet model had an RMSE of 4.3 m. Hy-TeC, which was used to generate a height map of Ghana using free and open access remotely sensed data with Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-1 images as predictors and GEDI height measurements as calibration data, has the potential to be used globally.

International audience; While concentrations of most air pollutants have been decreasing in Europe over the last 20 years, O3 is showing variable trends, with increasing average and decreasing peak concentrations. The complexity of O3 chemistry adds to the difficulty of understanding both the trends observed and how concentrations can be mitigated. This paper tries to answer the following questions: which emission sectors should be targeted and what levels of reduction could be achieved? To address these reflections, an Atlas of O3 chemical regimes has been constructed. For this Atlas, 22 European cities were selected and the surrogate model Air Control Toolbox (ACT) was used to evaluate the simulated changes in several ozone metrics as a result of reductions in road transport and industrial emissions. O3 chemical regimes have been classified and put in perspective with meteorological and emission data at each city location and around. The O3 sensitivity to road transport and industrial emissions differ from one city to another, but also for the same city when considering different ozone metrics and seasons (e.g., annual means versus SOMO35 or summer peaks). Counterproductive impacts yielding O3 increase when emissions are reduced are mainly encountered in regions or periods where O3 concentration are relatively low. In terms of meteorological factors, O3 chemical regimes are mostly impacted by the amount of solar radiation received but wind speed also has a considerable impact. Most cases show a higher sensitivity to emission reductions from road transport or equal sensitivity to emission reductions from road transport and industry. Very few cases are more sensitive to emissions from the industrial sector. However, the response of annual or seasonal average O3 metrics to industrial and road transport emissions can be considered relatively low with a maximum reduction of 33% for a 100% reduction of both industrial and road transport emissions. This is because anthropogenic emission can only mitigate ozone above a substantial natural tropospheric background. It is precisely this incremental anthropogenic ozone, which should be targeted by efficient policies as we also demonstrate that none of the cities studied would exceed the European target value with a 100% reduction in emissions.

International audience; Although research dealing with the geological evidence of past tsunamis has increased significantly in the last two decades, studies of tsunami deposits emplaced during the backwash phases are still underrepresented. Here, we provide the first investigation of tsunami backwash deposits all around an island (Tutuila Island, American Samoa), in the southwest of the Pacific Ring of Fire. We decipher the sedimentary record preserved offshore an open bay (Fagafue) and within a sheltered bay (Masefau) on the north shore of Tutuila. Backwash deposits of three historic tsunamis, namely the 2009 South Pacific, 1960 Valdivia and 1917 Tonga Trench tsunamis, were identified in sediment cores, based on sedimentological, geochemical and chronological data. Deposits were characterized by a geochemical terrestrial signature (Ti/Ca and K), while the grain size characteristics differed, being finer offshore the open bay and coarser within the sheltered bay. The 2009 South Pacific and the 1960 Valdivia tsunamis are recorded on both the north (Masefau and off Fagafue bays) and south (Pago Pago Bay) shores of Tutuila, providing the first correlation of tsunami backwash deposits all around an island. Furthermore, the present study presents the first geological evidence of backwash associated with a large 15-16th century tsunami, which also affected many parts of the South Pacific, as well as that of an older event between the 11th and 14th century. Studies of tsunami backwash deposits provide means to extend the geological record of these high energy events, due to the generally good preservation potential of the deposits.

International audience; Despite the skyrocketing growth in recent decades of environmental studies on ports and shipping, their local health impacts remain largely under-researched. This article tackles this gap in research by statistically analyzing data on global shipping flows across nearly 5000 ports in 35 OECD countries between 2001 and 2018. The different traffic types, from containers to bulk and passengers, are analyzed jointly with data on natural conditions, air pollution, socio-economic indicators, and public health. The principal results show that port regions pollute more than non-port regions on average, while health impacts vary according to the size and specialization of the port region. Three types of port regions are clearly differentiated: industrial, intermediate, and metropolitan port regions.

International audience; A major global marine transgression occurred during the Callovian to Early Kimmeridgian, which was interrupted locally by a hiatus during the Late Callovian to Early Oxfordian. The transgression may have been a major driver for extensive coral buildup development in the Oxfordian. The depositional hiatus may be related to a combination of eustasy, local tectonic activity and hinterland movements, highlighting the potential influence of tectonism on sedimentary evolution in sedimentary basins. Whilst a regional Late Callovian-Early Oxfordian hiatus has been recorded extensively in the Tethys realm, this study has improved the biostratigraphic and sedimentary record from Morocco, and for the first time documents the Late Callovian-Early Oxfordian depositional hiatus in the Atlantic realm. Detailed sedimentary facies analysis of Callovian to Oxfordian carbonates and siliciclastics (Ouanamane Formation) demonstrates a major transgression from continental and coastal sediments, through oolitic mid-inner ramp deposits, brachiopod-rich middle ramp deposits, and ultimately to outer ramp marls, sharply overlain by Middle Oxfordian coral buildups across the basin. Repeated hard- and firmgrounds and bioturbated bed tops highlight transgressive surfaces traceable basinwide, which suggests low sedimentation rates in the upper Ouanamane Formation. Localized siliciclastic input is evidence for episodes of erosion in the same interval. Collection of new fossil specimens (ammonites, brachiopods, echinoderms, foraminifera) and revision of existing fossil material suggest this interval corresponds to a hiatus or condensed section in the Callovian-Oxfordian transition. The uppermost part of the Ouanamane Formation is of early Middle Oxfordian age and is directly overlain by Middle Oxfordian coral buildups. Onset of buildup construction is considered synchronous based on the new biostratigraphic data. Observations in Moroco compare with the sedimentary evolution around the Tethys, and in particular with the Arabian Plate. The Callovian-Oxfordian depositional hiatus corresponds to eustatic sea level changes, which were possibly driven by global cooling, and was likely overprinted by local tectonics.

International audience; To guarantee the blue skies for the 2022 Winter Olympics held in Beijing and Zhangjiakou from February 4 to 20, Beijing and its surrounding areas adopted a series of emission control measures. This provides an opportunity to determine the impacts of large-scale temporary control measures on the air quality in Beijing during this special period. Here, we applied the WRF-CMAQ model to quantify the contributions of emission reduction measures and meteorological conditions. Results show that meteorological conditions in 2022 decreased PM2.5 in Beijing by 6.9 and 11.8 μg/m3 relative to 2021 under the scenarios with and without emission reductions, respectively. Strict emission reduction measures implemented in Beijing and seven neighboring provinces resulted in an average decrease of 13.0 μg/m3 (-41.2%) in PM2.5 in Beijing. Over the entire period, local emission reductions contributed more to good air quality in Beijing than nonlocal emission reductions. Under the emission reduction scenario, local, controlled regions, other regions, and boundary conditions contributed 47.7%, 42.0%, 5.3%, and 5.0% to the PM2.5 concentrations in Beijing, respectively. The results indicate that during the cleaning period with the air masses from the northwest, the abatements of PM2.5 were mainly caused by local emission reductions. However, during the potential pollution period with the air masses from the east-northeast and west-southwest, the abatements of PM2.5 were caused by both local and nonlocal emission reductions almost equally. This implies that regional coordinated prevention and control strategies need to be arranged scientifically and rationally when heavy pollution events are forecasted.
