    National audience; Using data collected from one of the most popular ridesharing platforms, we illustrate how mobility has changed after the exit from the Covid-19 induced confinement. We measure the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak on the level of mobility and the price of ridesharing. Finally, we show that the pandemic has exacerbated ethnic discrimination. Our results suggest that a decision-maker encouraging the use of ridesharing during the pandemic should account for the impact of the perceived health risks on ridesharing prices and should find ways to ensure fair access.

    The paper explores the effect of competition on prices and frequencies for the Interurban rail market in Europe. Intramodal competition is assessed by the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI). Intermodal competition takes into account new types of service such as coach and carpooling services. The originality of the analysis stems from the method and database used. The results show that intra-modal competition has a significant impact on frequencies but not on economy class prices because of oligopolistic organizations (duopoly). In addition, the effects of intermodal competition are limited mainly because of considerable differences between services in terms of travel time, comfort and users' preferences.     Abstract An integrated dynamic model of natural gas pipeline networks is developed in this paper. Components for gas supply, e.g., pipelines, junctions, compressor stations, LNG terminals, regulation stations and gas storage facilities are included in the model. These components are firstly modeled with respect to their properties and functions and, then, integrated at the system level by Graph Theory. The model can be used for simulating the system response in different scenarios of operation, and evaluate the consequences from the perspectives of supply security and resilience. A case study is considered to evaluate the accuracy of the model by benchmarking its results against those from literature and the software Pipeline Studio. Finally, the model is applied on a relatively complex natural gas pipeline network and the results are analyzed in detail from the supply security and resilience points of view. The main contributions of the paper are: firstly, a novel model of a complex gas pipeline network is proposed as a dynamic state-space model at system level; a method, based on the dynamic model, is proposed to analyze the security and resilience of supply from a system perspective.

    This article analyses the relationship between the location of warehouses, the spatial scope of their activities and some of their operational characteristics. It uses the results of a French national survey providing detailed characteristics for 1,974 warehouses of more than 5,000 square metres. A typology of four spatial categories is built based on a population potential with different values of friction (?). Applying logistic regression, the four categories are related to survey data describing the spatial scope of the activities of warehouses, controlling for variations in other characteristics such as seasonality and vehicle movements. The results show a significant relationship between the location of warehouses and their spatial scope. As expected, warehouses with local origins are more frequent outside the core (inner Paris) and metropolitan location categories (outer Paris and other large urban areas). The findings suggest there may be significant differences in the spatial scope of warehouse activity even within the same urban area.

    International audience; The sustainable consumption and integration of digital solutions with respect to sustainable consumption have been encouraged by the new European circular economy action plan. Digital adoption has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic; companies have been challenged to rapidly adapt to the constant evolution of consumer needs and expectations, leading to valuable insights into the advancement of green business practices and a consequent rethinking of their business model. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the major shifts in sustainable consumer behavior on the Romanian retail market within the context of the Green European Deal, and retailers’ priorities in agilely adapting to these significant evolutions. Based on a comprehensive literature review on these major shifts and significant evolutions at the national and international levels, a quantitative study was carried out to evaluate the Romanian retail market and identify the major challenges faced by retailers in dealing with the new set of priorities. The data collection was conducted via a survey used in the retail environment, applied within a Romanian supermarket chain. The Romanian retail sector has a particular configuration, which may have an impact upon the study’s generalizability. Located in Central and Eastern Europe at the crossroads of the EU, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and the Middle East, Romania is a leading destination for foreign direct investment, and it is recognized for the similarities of its distribution and sales channels, the range of its retail outlets, and the local retail market dominance on the Big Box segment by reputed major retailers. A spectacular evolution is recorded in Romania’s e-commerce market, including from the point of view of the long-standing and memorable traditional relationship between Romania and China which was confirmed more recently by Romanian consumers who prefer to buy online from stores in China. Our consumer research provides retailers with deep consumer insights with regard to their priorities in their agile adaptation. According to our research, Romanian consumers are environmentally concerned consumers, displaying an increased awareness about the important role they play with respect to impacting sustainable production and consumption by adopting green purchase behavior. Our study also points to the fact that retailers, although faced with challenges in targeting consumers with customized messages to reinforce their brand perception on sustainability issues, do pay considerable attention to sustainability as a personal value embraced by consumers and are willing to focus on digitizing their business processes to enable new, sustainable business models.

    International audience; The aim of this research was to assess the effect of top management team gender diversity on firms’ effective commitment to climate change management from two new perspectives: a more detailed analysis of gender diversity in corporate management and an international analysis of the phenomenon. Broadening climate change management assessment through selected CDP qualitative metrics for governance, risk management and strategy provides a more in-depth view of climate change managerial practices. Even though a growing body of academic literature highlights the potential positive impact of gender diversity, this empirical research based on a sample of 836 firms from 16 developed countries provides mainly inconclusive results. These results may be explained first by a still insufficient and below critical mass, percentage of women within top management teams; and second, by a selection bias, as only the best performers disclose their climate change management data. This also calls for companies to improve their gender diversity among the top management team, and for regulators to further extend compulsory climate change management reporting.

    International audience; In addition to being a major threat to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, biological invasions also have profound impacts on economies and human wellbeing. However, the threats posed by invasive species often do not receive adequate attention and lack targeted management. In part, this may result from different or even ambivalent perceptions of invasive species which have a dual effect for stakeholders—being simultaneously a benefit and a burden. For these species, literature that synthesizes best practice is very limited, and analyses providing a comprehensive understanding of their economics are generally lacking. This has resulted in a critical gap in our understanding of the underlying trade-offs surrounding management efforts and approaches. Here, we explore qualitative trends in the literature for invasive species with dual effects, drawing from both the recently compiled InvaCost database and international case studies. The few invasive species with dual roles in InvaCost provide evidence for a temporal increase in reporting of costs, but with benefits relatively sporadically reported alongside costs. We discuss methods, management, assessment and policy frameworks dedicated to these species, along with lessons learned, complexities and persisting knowledge gaps. Our analysis points at the need to enhance scientific understanding of those species through inter- and cross-disciplinary efforts that can help advance their management.

    International audience; This research provides an exploration of the relationship between flexible work arrangements (FWA), CO2 emissions, and household travel allocation among dual-earner couples. Using data from the United Kingdom National Travel Survey for the period between 2002 and 2017, we develop a path analysis approach based on SEM that allows for a comprehensive study of travel behavior and trade-off effects. Results suggest that, although the partner who benefits from FWAs tends to carry out domestic provision and maintenance activities, the allocation of tasks within the household is still asymmetrical. Results also outline that the presence of children will intensely affect the allocation of activities and household arrangements, increasing gender inequalities.

    Abstract Analyzing spatial structures of transportation data at various scales can be of prime interest to transportation planning and governance. In recent years, multi-scale spatial analysis methods have been developed and used in fields like ecology and geography, but only a few studies have applied these methods to transportation data. However, such methods can provide an efficient exploratory tool for: identifying those scales at which transportation data vary spatially; modeling the spatial structures at each scale; and determining the processes at work that explain these spatial structures. This paper describes and demonstrates how a multi-scale spatial analysis method, namely distance-based Moran's eigenvector maps (dbMEM), can be applied to study the spatial layout of car ownership. For this analysis, we rely on aggregated census data for small statistical areas within France's Loire-Atlantique administrative region. At first, 176 spatial vectors representing spatial patterns with a positive autocorrelation are constructed. Among the 176 vectors, only 23 significant ones are retained after performing a regression with car ownership as the dependent variable. Next, we divide these spatial vectors into three sub-models representing three spatial scales: broad scale, medium scale, and fine scale. Lastly, we identify a set of sociodemographic factors capable of explaining the spatial variation at each scale, i.e.: the broad-scale variation is mainly explained by population density, couples with children and income variables; the medium scale by couples with children, share of individuals in the 25–54 year age range and income; and the fine scale by couples with children and income variables.

    International audience; Current environmental issues that have been made unavoidable by environmental regulations have become new constraints for industrial companies. In this paper, we consider a joint production-location problem for supply chains under a carbon tax policy on transport-related carbon emissions. We characterize the relationship that links the production level to the input quantities by considering a production function, namely, constant elasticity of substitution (CES) function. Our study focuses on the potential impact of increased transportation costs due to carbon taxation on the joint production-location decision. We find that the location-production configuration differs according to the degree of substitutability among the raw material quantities. More importantly, we observe that a higher carbon tax is more likely to cause a significant jump in firm location choice and a considerable change in production decisions when a firm has high flexibility in its ability to substitute among input quantities.

    National audience; Using data collected from one of the most popular ridesharing platforms, we illustrate how mobility has changed after the exit from the Covid-19 induced confinement. We measure the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak on the level of mobility and the price of ridesharing. Finally, we show that the pandemic has exacerbated ethnic discrimination. Our results suggest that a decision-maker encouraging the use of ridesharing during the pandemic should account for the impact of the perceived health risks on ridesharing prices and should find ways to ensure fair access.

    The paper explores the effect of competition on prices and frequencies for the Interurban rail market in Europe. Intramodal competition is assessed by the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI). Intermodal competition takes into account new types of service such as coach and carpooling services. The originality of the analysis stems from the method and database used. The results show that intra-modal competition has a significant impact on frequencies but not on economy class prices because of oligopolistic organizations (duopoly). In addition, the effects of intermodal competition are limited mainly because of considerable differences between services in terms of travel time, comfort and users' preferences.     Abstract An integrated dynamic model of natural gas pipeline networks is developed in this paper. Components for gas supply, e.g., pipelines, junctions, compressor stations, LNG terminals, regulation stations and gas storage facilities are included in the model. These components are firstly modeled with respect to their properties and functions and, then, integrated at the system level by Graph Theory. The model can be used for simulating the system response in different scenarios of operation, and evaluate the consequences from the perspectives of supply security and resilience. A case study is considered to evaluate the accuracy of the model by benchmarking its results against those from literature and the software Pipeline Studio. Finally, the model is applied on a relatively complex natural gas pipeline network and the results are analyzed in detail from the supply security and resilience points of view. The main contributions of the paper are: firstly, a novel model of a complex gas pipeline network is proposed as a dynamic state-space model at system level; a method, based on the dynamic model, is proposed to analyze the security and resilience of supply from a system perspective.

    This article analyses the relationship between the location of warehouses, the spatial scope of their activities and some of their operational characteristics. It uses the results of a French national survey providing detailed characteristics for 1,974 warehouses of more than 5,000 square metres. A typology of four spatial categories is built based on a population potential with different values of friction (?). Applying logistic regression, the four categories are related to survey data describing the spatial scope of the activities of warehouses, controlling for variations in other characteristics such as seasonality and vehicle movements. The results show a significant relationship between the location of warehouses and their spatial scope. As expected, warehouses with local origins are more frequent outside the core (inner Paris) and metropolitan location categories (outer Paris and other large urban areas). The findings suggest there may be significant differences in the spatial scope of warehouse activity even within the same urban area.

    International audience; The sustainable consumption and integration of digital solutions with respect to sustainable consumption have been encouraged by the new European circular economy action plan. Digital adoption has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic; companies have been challenged to rapidly adapt to the constant evolution of consumer needs and expectations, leading to valuable insights into the advancement of green business practices and a consequent rethinking of their business model. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the major shifts in sustainable consumer behavior on the Romanian retail market within the context of the Green European Deal, and retailers’ priorities in agilely adapting to these significant evolutions. Based on a comprehensive literature review on these major shifts and significant evolutions at the national and international levels, a quantitative study was carried out to evaluate the Romanian retail market and identify the major challenges faced by retailers in dealing with the new set of priorities. The data collection was conducted via a survey used in the retail environment, applied within a Romanian supermarket chain. The Romanian retail sector has a particular configuration, which may have an impact upon the study’s generalizability. Located in Central and Eastern Europe at the crossroads of the EU, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and the Middle East, Romania is a leading destination for foreign direct investment, and it is recognized for the similarities of its distribution and sales channels, the range of its retail outlets, and the local retail market dominance on the Big Box segment by reputed major retailers. A spectacular evolution is recorded in Romania’s e-commerce market, including from the point of view of the long-standing and memorable traditional relationship between Romania and China which was confirmed more recently by Romanian consumers who prefer to buy online from stores in China. Our consumer research provides retailers with deep consumer insights with regard to their priorities in their agile adaptation. According to our research, Romanian consumers are environmentally concerned consumers, displaying an increased awareness about the important role they play with respect to impacting sustainable production and consumption by adopting green purchase behavior. Our study also points to the fact that retailers, although faced with challenges in targeting consumers with customized messages to reinforce their brand perception on sustainability issues, do pay considerable attention to sustainability as a personal value embraced by consumers and are willing to focus on digitizing their business processes to enable new, sustainable business models.

    International audience; The aim of this research was to assess the effect of top management team gender diversity on firms’ effective commitment to climate change management from two new perspectives: a more detailed analysis of gender diversity in corporate management and an international analysis of the phenomenon. Broadening climate change management assessment through selected CDP qualitative metrics for governance, risk management and strategy provides a more in-depth view of climate change managerial practices. Even though a growing body of academic literature highlights the potential positive impact of gender diversity, this empirical research based on a sample of 836 firms from 16 developed countries provides mainly inconclusive results. These results may be explained first by a still insufficient and below critical mass, percentage of women within top management teams; and second, by a selection bias, as only the best performers disclose their climate change management data. This also calls for companies to improve their gender diversity among the top management team, and for regulators to further extend compulsory climate change management reporting.

    International audience; In addition to being a major threat to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, biological invasions also have profound impacts on economies and human wellbeing. However, the threats posed by invasive species often do not receive adequate attention and lack targeted management. In part, this may result from different or even ambivalent perceptions of invasive species which have a dual effect for stakeholders—being simultaneously a benefit and a burden. For these species, literature that synthesizes best practice is very limited, and analyses providing a comprehensive understanding of their economics are generally lacking. This has resulted in a critical gap in our understanding of the underlying trade-offs surrounding management efforts and approaches. Here, we explore qualitative trends in the literature for invasive species with dual effects, drawing from both the recently compiled InvaCost database and international case studies. The few invasive species with dual roles in InvaCost provide evidence for a temporal increase in reporting of costs, but with benefits relatively sporadically reported alongside costs. We discuss methods, management, assessment and policy frameworks dedicated to these species, along with lessons learned, complexities and persisting knowledge gaps. Our analysis points at the need to enhance scientific understanding of those species through inter- and cross-disciplinary efforts that can help advance their management.

    International audience; This research provides an exploration of the relationship between flexible work arrangements (FWA), CO2 emissions, and household travel allocation among dual-earner couples. Using data from the United Kingdom National Travel Survey for the period between 2002 and 2017, we develop a path analysis approach based on SEM that allows for a comprehensive study of travel behavior and trade-off effects. Results suggest that, although the partner who benefits from FWAs tends to carry out domestic provision and maintenance activities, the allocation of tasks within the household is still asymmetrical. Results also outline that the presence of children will intensely affect the allocation of activities and household arrangements, increasing gender inequalities.

    Abstract Analyzing spatial structures of transportation data at various scales can be of prime interest to transportation planning and governance. In recent years, multi-scale spatial analysis methods have been developed and used in fields like ecology and geography, but only a few studies have applied these methods to transportation data. However, such methods can provide an efficient exploratory tool for: identifying those scales at which transportation data vary spatially; modeling the spatial structures at each scale; and determining the processes at work that explain these spatial structures. This paper describes and demonstrates how a multi-scale spatial analysis method, namely distance-based Moran's eigenvector maps (dbMEM), can be applied to study the spatial layout of car ownership. For this analysis, we rely on aggregated census data for small statistical areas within France's Loire-Atlantique administrative region. At first, 176 spatial vectors representing spatial patterns with a positive autocorrelation are constructed. Among the 176 vectors, only 23 significant ones are retained after performing a regression with car ownership as the dependent variable. Next, we divide these spatial vectors into three sub-models representing three spatial scales: broad scale, medium scale, and fine scale. Lastly, we identify a set of sociodemographic factors capable of explaining the spatial variation at each scale, i.e.: the broad-scale variation is mainly explained by population density, couples with children and income variables; the medium scale by couples with children, share of individuals in the 25–54 year age range and income; and the fine scale by couples with children and income variables.

    International audience; Current environmental issues that have been made unavoidable by environmental regulations have become new constraints for industrial companies. In this paper, we consider a joint production-location problem for supply chains under a carbon tax policy on transport-related carbon emissions. We characterize the relationship that links the production level to the input quantities by considering a production function, namely, constant elasticity of substitution (CES) function. Our study focuses on the potential impact of increased transportation costs due to carbon taxation on the joint production-location decision. We find that the location-production configuration differs according to the degree of substitutability among the raw material quantities. More importantly, we observe that a higher carbon tax is more likely to cause a significant jump in firm location choice and a considerable change in production decisions when a firm has high flexibility in its ability to substitute among input quantities.
