For each pixel, our approach compares actual building density after smoothing to counterfactual smoothed building density computed after randomly redistributing buildings. We define as urban any area with statistically significant excess building density. Within urban areas, extensions to our approach allow us to distinguish ‘core’ urban pixels and detect centres and subcentres. Finally, we develop novel one- and two-sided tests that provide a statistical basis to compare maps with different delineations, which we use to assess the robustness of our approach and to document large differences between our preferred delineation and the corresponding official one. Mahmudul Alam; Brent Doberstein;The carbon footprint of households is a significant contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 24% of total emissions. As a result, it is critical to quantify a household’s carbon footprint in order to reduce it over time. One of the best ways to measure carbon emitted from various sectors of the economy, including household daily activities, is to calculate a country’s carbon footprint (CF). This study statistically examined the magnitude of households’ carbon footprints and their relationships with household daily activities and certain socio-economic demographic variables in Malaysia. Results revealed that the average household carbon footprint amounted to 11.76 t-CO2. The average also showed that the primary carbon footprint, 7.02 t-CO2 or 59.69% was higher compared to the secondary carbon footprint which was 4.73 t- CO2 or 40.22% and assessment revealed significant differences among household types. The largest carbon footprint was evident in a medium-high cost urban area, estimated at 20.14 t-CO2, while the carbon footprint found in a rural area was 9.58 t-CO2. In the latter, the primary carbon footprint was almost double the figure of 5.84 t-CO2 (61%) than the secondary carbon footprint of 3.73 t-CO2 (39%). The study reveals a higher carbon footprint in urban areas compared to rural ones depicting the effects of urbanisation and urban sprawl on household lifestyles and carbon footprints. Despite some limitations, the findings of this study will help policymakers design and implement stronger policies that enforce low-carbon activities and energy-saving goods and services in order to reduce urban Malaysia’s carbon footprint dramatically.

(2016) and subsequent developments by Boumezoued (2020), Boumezoued et al. (2020) and Boumezoued et al. (2019), it has been acknowledged that observations from censuses have led to major problems of reliability in estimates of general population mortality rates as implemented in practice. These issues led to mis-interpretation of some key mortality characteristics in the past decades, including ”false cohort effects”. To overcome these issues, the exposure estimates for a given country can be corrected by using monthly fertility records. However, in the absence of birth-by-month data, the recent developments are not applicable. Therefore, this paper explores new solutions regarding the construction of mortality tables in this context, based on machine learning techniques. As a main result, it is demonstrated that the new exposure models proposed in this paper allow to provide correction with high quality and to improve the fitting of stochastic mortality models without a cohort component, as it is the case for the existing correction method based on monthly fertility data.

Implementing adaptive water-efficient management practices is thus becoming necessary to maintain high levels of productivity while preserving the water resources. This paper investigates the ability of eucalypt farmers to modify their current silvicultural practices in order to adapt to drought in the near future. We ran a choice experiment in the state of Minas Gerais, among 80 eucalypt tree farmers, who were asked to choose from several management options associated with various financial supports. The results show that adaptation by reducing the length of the eucalypt rotation proves to be by far the preferred option, despite the associated costs. On the contrary, reducing density appears to be the least chosen option by the respondents, which may suggest that they underestimate the benefits of this strategy. We moreover find a clear and relevant segmentation of farmers' choice behavior, the general preference for reducing the length of the eucalypt rotation being driven by the most vulnerable farmers of the sample

We in particular analyze three features of cities commonly referred to as the "3 D's" (Cervero & Kockelman 1997): Density, Design and Diversity. Individual data allow us to identify the effects of urban form and the spatial sorting of households on emissions. We also use instrumental variables to control for other endogeneity issues. Our results suggest that, by choosing to live at the fringe of a metropolitan area instead of the city center, a representative household would consume approximately six extra tanks of fuel per year. More generally, doubling residential Density would result in an annual saving of approximately two tanks per household. However, larger gains would result from better urban Design (job-housing central-ization, improved rail/bus routes to central business districts, reduced pressure for road construction and a less fragmented built environment in urban areas) while improved Diversity (the concentration of various local amenities such as shops and public facilities) can also help lower fuel consumption. Another important finding is that the relationship between the metropolitan population and car emissions in France is bell-shaped, contrary to that in the US, suggesting that small cities do compensate for their lack of Density/Diversity by environmentally-friendly Design.

Dhows have a characteristic ogival-shaped wooden hull and a decorated superstructure at the stern. With a modest transport capacity ranging from 200 tons to more than 2,000 tons for the largest, dhows stay below the radars of academic research. Yet, compiled satellite pictures using Google-Earth allow a census to be conducted of dhows along coastlines and to measure their transport capacity and the extent of their network. The article starts with a short survey of the existing literature, and then presents the methodological framework of the study. It tests the spatial complementarity/duality of dhow networks with normal maritime networks (i.e. mainly containerized shipping lines), so as to understand the economic conditions of dhows’ survival. Next, it shows that the embeddedness of dhow ports in cities is also part of the explanation of surviving dhow trade. A concluding discussion tackles the necessity of normalization interfaces when a standardized transport network is interconnected with a local traditional transport network in a port. Cet article fournit la toute première évaluation de l'étendue du réseau des boutres et de leur capacité de transport autour de la Péninsule Arabique (dans le golfe Persique et la mer d’Arabie) ainsi que leur degré d'interconnexion avec les réseaux de transport maritime conteneurisés. Les boutres ont généralement une coque ogivale en bois surmontée à la poupe d’un château ornementé. Avec une modeste capacité de transport allant de 200 tonnes à plus de 2000 tonnes pour les plus gros, les boutres restent sous les radars de la recherche académique. Pourtant, des images satellites compilées par Google-Earth permettent de recenser les boutres le long des côtes et de mesurer leur capacité de transport et les interconnexions de leur réseau. L'article commence par une brève revue de la littérature existante, puis présente le cadre méthodologique de l'étude. Il teste ensuite la complémentarité / dualité spatiale des réseaux de boutres avec les réseaux maritimes standardisés (principalement celui des armateurs de lignes régulières conteneurisées), afin de comprendre les conditions de leur soutenabilité économique. Puis, il montre que l'encastrement des ports de boutres dans les villes participe de cette soutenabilité économique. Une discussion finale souligne la nécéssaire présence d’interfaces de normalisation lorsqu'un réseau de transport normalisé est interconnecté avec un réseau de transport traditionnel dans un port. Este artículo proporciona una primera evaluación en la capacidad de transporte de la red de los dhows y su grado de interconexión con las redes de transporte marítimo de carga estandarizada en la Península Arábiga (en el Golfo Pérsico y el Mar Arábigo). Los dhows corresponden a una embarcación con un velamen triangular y suelen tener un casco de madera ojival en la popa. Poseen una acotada capacidad de transporte que va de 200 a más de 2.000 toneladas para los más grandes y su estudio desde la academia ha sido acotado. Se utilizan imágenes de satélite de Google-Earth para identificar los dhows a lo largo de la costa y medir su capacidad de transporte e interconexiones. En su primera parte el artículo presenta una breve revisión de la literatura, para posteriormente encuadrar el marco metodológico del estudio. En un tercer momento se testea la complementariedad y dualidad de las redes de dhows con las del gran trasporte marítimo (principalmente con la infraestructura de carga en contenedores como grúas o carretilla pórtico) con la finalidad de comprender las condiciones para su sostenibilidad económica. Los resultados expresan que la integración de los puertos de dhow en las ciudades también contribuye a tal viabilidad económica. Finalmente se discute la necesidad de una presencia de interfaces estandarizadas cuando una red de transporte marítima estándar se interconecta a una red de transporte tradicional en el puerto.

International audience; ELECTRE TRI-nB is a method designed to sort alternatives evaluated on several attributes among ordered categories. It is an extension of ELEC-TRE TRI-B that uses several limiting profiles, instead of one, to delimit each category. In a companion paper we have characterized the partitions that can be obtained with ELECTRE TRI-nB, using a simple axiom called linearity. The simplicity of this characterization crucially depends on the possibility to use as many limiting profiles as we like to delimit a category. This is not completely realistic and there is a need to study models in which the number of limiting profiles delimiting each category is restricted. This note starts such a study. We investigate the case of ELECTRE TRI-nB models based on unanimity and using no more than two limiting profiles per category. Our results show that the constraints on the number of limiting profiles make the problem difficult.

This article illustrates how automated computational methods may be used in this context to scale up such empirical observations and increase their resolution and significance. We specifically apply a face and gender detection algorithm on a broad set of popular movies spanning more than three decades to carry out a large-scale appraisal of the on-screen presence of women and men. Beyond the confirmation of a strong under-representation of women, we exhibit a clear temporal trend towards a fairer representativeness. We further contrast our findings with respect to movie genre, budget, and various audience-related features such as movie gross and user ratings. We lastly propose a fine description of significant asymmetries in the mise-en-sc\`ene and mise-en-cadre of characters in relation to their gender and the spatial composition of a given frame. We investigate here co-evolutionary processes between land-use and transportation, at the scale of Mega-City Regions, by introducing a toy model of corresponding processes. In particular, our model is specifically tailored to include governance processes ruling the growth of transportation infrastructure. We show through stylised numerical simulations the potentialities of our model to reproduce a variety of dynamics when co-evolution is taken into account. We then apply the model to a case study, by calibrating it for the Pearl River Delta Mega-city Region (China, 1990-2010). To go beyond this first modelling step, we elaborate on the challenges to overcome to go further towards more complex models integrating co-evolution between transportation networks and territories in urban systems. This paper extends the empirical knowledge by providing and comparing quantitative estimates of these various effects on both commuting distance and mode choice in a European city spatial context, while using up-to-date and novel methodology. Eight indicators of built and social environment are identified in order to characterize clusters of residential locations, giving a rich view of spatial and social diversity of locations. To disentangle the causal effects of residential self selection and built environment, both sample selection and specific matching preprocessing ("coarsened exact matching", a novel approach in the field) are implemented. Regarding commuting distance, the true effect of built and social environment appears modest with an increase in the range of 10-20%. It comes behind individual socioeconomic characteristics such as car availability and qualification. Regarding commuting mode choice, again the true effect of built and social environment is modest, with a nearly 20%pt increase of car share and around 10%pt decrease or public transport share for the most prominent effects, and it comes behind car availability. These results suggest the primary importance of influencing directly car use, if not car ownership, in the European context, while trying to modify the built environment would provide only limited results. For each pixel, our approach compares actual building density after smoothing to counterfactual smoothed building density computed after randomly redistributing buildings. We define as urban any area with statistically significant excess building density. Within urban areas, extensions to our approach allow us to distinguish ‘core’ urban pixels and detect centres and subcentres. Finally, we develop novel one- and two-sided tests that provide a statistical basis to compare maps with different delineations, which we use to assess the robustness of our approach and to document large differences between our preferred delineation and the corresponding official one. Mahmudul Alam; Brent Doberstein;The carbon footprint of households is a significant contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 24% of total emissions. As a result, it is critical to quantify a household’s carbon footprint in order to reduce it over time. One of the best ways to measure carbon emitted from various sectors of the economy, including household daily activities, is to calculate a country’s carbon footprint (CF). This study statistically examined the magnitude of households’ carbon footprints and their relationships with household daily activities and certain socio-economic demographic variables in Malaysia. Results revealed that the average household carbon footprint amounted to 11.76 t-CO2. The average also showed that the primary carbon footprint, 7.02 t-CO2 or 59.69% was higher compared to the secondary carbon footprint which was 4.73 t- CO2 or 40.22% and assessment revealed significant differences among household types. The largest carbon footprint was evident in a medium-high cost urban area, estimated at 20.14 t-CO2, while the carbon footprint found in a rural area was 9.58 t-CO2. In the latter, the primary carbon footprint was almost double the figure of 5.84 t-CO2 (61%) than the secondary carbon footprint of 3.73 t-CO2 (39%). The study reveals a higher carbon footprint in urban areas compared to rural ones depicting the effects of urbanisation and urban sprawl on household lifestyles and carbon footprints. Despite some limitations, the findings of this study will help policymakers design and implement stronger policies that enforce low-carbon activities and energy-saving goods and services in order to reduce urban Malaysia’s carbon footprint dramatically.

(2016) and subsequent developments by Boumezoued (2020), Boumezoued et al. (2020) and Boumezoued et al. (2019), it has been acknowledged that observations from censuses have led to major problems of reliability in estimates of general population mortality rates as implemented in practice. These issues led to mis-interpretation of some key mortality characteristics in the past decades, including ”false cohort effects”. To overcome these issues, the exposure estimates for a given country can be corrected by using monthly fertility records. However, in the absence of birth-by-month data, the recent developments are not applicable. Therefore, this paper explores new solutions regarding the construction of mortality tables in this context, based on machine learning techniques. As a main result, it is demonstrated that the new exposure models proposed in this paper allow to provide correction with high quality and to improve the fitting of stochastic mortality models without a cohort component, as it is the case for the existing correction method based on monthly fertility data.

Implementing adaptive water-efficient management practices is thus becoming necessary to maintain high levels of productivity while preserving the water resources. This paper investigates the ability of eucalypt farmers to modify their current silvicultural practices in order to adapt to drought in the near future. We ran a choice experiment in the state of Minas Gerais, among 80 eucalypt tree farmers, who were asked to choose from several management options associated with various financial supports. The results show that adaptation by reducing the length of the eucalypt rotation proves to be by far the preferred option, despite the associated costs. On the contrary, reducing density appears to be the least chosen option by the respondents, which may suggest that they underestimate the benefits of this strategy. We moreover find a clear and relevant segmentation of farmers' choice behavior, the general preference for reducing the length of the eucalypt rotation being driven by the most vulnerable farmers of the sample

We in particular analyze three features of cities commonly referred to as the "3 D's" (Cervero & Kockelman 1997): Density, Design and Diversity. Individual data allow us to identify the effects of urban form and the spatial sorting of households on emissions. We also use instrumental variables to control for other endogeneity issues. Our results suggest that, by choosing to live at the fringe of a metropolitan area instead of the city center, a representative household would consume approximately six extra tanks of fuel per year. More generally, doubling residential Density would result in an annual saving of approximately two tanks per household. However, larger gains would result from better urban Design (job-housing central-ization, improved rail/bus routes to central business districts, reduced pressure for road construction and a less fragmented built environment in urban areas) while improved Diversity (the concentration of various local amenities such as shops and public facilities) can also help lower fuel consumption. Another important finding is that the relationship between the metropolitan population and car emissions in France is bell-shaped, contrary to that in the US, suggesting that small cities do compensate for their lack of Density/Diversity by environmentally-friendly Design.

Dhows have a characteristic ogival-shaped wooden hull and a decorated superstructure at the stern. With a modest transport capacity ranging from 200 tons to more than 2,000 tons for the largest, dhows stay below the radars of academic research. Yet, compiled satellite pictures using Google-Earth allow a census to be conducted of dhows along coastlines and to measure their transport capacity and the extent of their network. The article starts with a short survey of the existing literature, and then presents the methodological framework of the study. It tests the spatial complementarity/duality of dhow networks with normal maritime networks (i.e. mainly containerized shipping lines), so as to understand the economic conditions of dhows’ survival. Next, it shows that the embeddedness of dhow ports in cities is also part of the explanation of surviving dhow trade. A concluding discussion tackles the necessity of normalization interfaces when a standardized transport network is interconnected with a local traditional transport network in a port. Cet article fournit la toute première évaluation de l'étendue du réseau des boutres et de leur capacité de transport autour de la Péninsule Arabique (dans le golfe Persique et la mer d’Arabie) ainsi que leur degré d'interconnexion avec les réseaux de transport maritime conteneurisés. Les boutres ont généralement une coque ogivale en bois surmontée à la poupe d’un château ornementé. Avec une modeste capacité de transport allant de 200 tonnes à plus de 2000 tonnes pour les plus gros, les boutres restent sous les radars de la recherche académique. Pourtant, des images satellites compilées par Google-Earth permettent de recenser les boutres le long des côtes et de mesurer leur capacité de transport et les interconnexions de leur réseau. L'article commence par une brève revue de la littérature existante, puis présente le cadre méthodologique de l'étude. Il teste ensuite la complémentarité / dualité spatiale des réseaux de boutres avec les réseaux maritimes standardisés (principalement celui des armateurs de lignes régulières conteneurisées), afin de comprendre les conditions de leur soutenabilité économique. Puis, il montre que l'encastrement des ports de boutres dans les villes participe de cette soutenabilité économique. Une discussion finale souligne la nécéssaire présence d’interfaces de normalisation lorsqu'un réseau de transport normalisé est interconnecté avec un réseau de transport traditionnel dans un port. Este artículo proporciona una primera evaluación en la capacidad de transporte de la red de los dhows y su grado de interconexión con las redes de transporte marítimo de carga estandarizada en la Península Arábiga (en el Golfo Pérsico y el Mar Arábigo). Los dhows corresponden a una embarcación con un velamen triangular y suelen tener un casco de madera ojival en la popa. Poseen una acotada capacidad de transporte que va de 200 a más de 2.000 toneladas para los más grandes y su estudio desde la academia ha sido acotado. Se utilizan imágenes de satélite de Google-Earth para identificar los dhows a lo largo de la costa y medir su capacidad de transporte e interconexiones. En su primera parte el artículo presenta una breve revisión de la literatura, para posteriormente encuadrar el marco metodológico del estudio. En un tercer momento se testea la complementariedad y dualidad de las redes de dhows con las del gran trasporte marítimo (principalmente con la infraestructura de carga en contenedores como grúas o carretilla pórtico) con la finalidad de comprender las condiciones para su sostenibilidad económica. Los resultados expresan que la integración de los puertos de dhow en las ciudades también contribuye a tal viabilidad económica. Finalmente se discute la necesidad de una presencia de interfaces estandarizadas cuando una red de transporte marítima estándar se interconecta a una red de transporte tradicional en el puerto.

International audience; ELECTRE TRI-nB is a method designed to sort alternatives evaluated on several attributes among ordered categories. It is an extension of ELEC-TRE TRI-B that uses several limiting profiles, instead of one, to delimit each category. In a companion paper we have characterized the partitions that can be obtained with ELECTRE TRI-nB, using a simple axiom called linearity. The simplicity of this characterization crucially depends on the possibility to use as many limiting profiles as we like to delimit a category. This is not completely realistic and there is a need to study models in which the number of limiting profiles delimiting each category is restricted. This note starts such a study. We investigate the case of ELECTRE TRI-nB models based on unanimity and using no more than two limiting profiles per category. Our results show that the constraints on the number of limiting profiles make the problem difficult.

This article illustrates how automated computational methods may be used in this context to scale up such empirical observations and increase their resolution and significance. We specifically apply a face and gender detection algorithm on a broad set of popular movies spanning more than three decades to carry out a large-scale appraisal of the on-screen presence of women and men. Beyond the confirmation of a strong under-representation of women, we exhibit a clear temporal trend towards a fairer representativeness. We further contrast our findings with respect to movie genre, budget, and various audience-related features such as movie gross and user ratings. We lastly propose a fine description of significant asymmetries in the mise-en-sc\`ene and mise-en-cadre of characters in relation to their gender and the spatial composition of a given frame. We investigate here co-evolutionary processes between land-use and transportation, at the scale of Mega-City Regions, by introducing a toy model of corresponding processes. In particular, our model is specifically tailored to include governance processes ruling the growth of transportation infrastructure. We show through stylised numerical simulations the potentialities of our model to reproduce a variety of dynamics when co-evolution is taken into account. We then apply the model to a case study, by calibrating it for the Pearl River Delta Mega-city Region (China, 1990-2010). To go beyond this first modelling step, we elaborate on the challenges to overcome to go further towards more complex models integrating co-evolution between transportation networks and territories in urban systems. This paper extends the empirical knowledge by providing and comparing quantitative estimates of these various effects on both commuting distance and mode choice in a European city spatial context, while using up-to-date and novel methodology. Eight indicators of built and social environment are identified in order to characterize clusters of residential locations, giving a rich view of spatial and social diversity of locations. To disentangle the causal effects of residential self selection and built environment, both sample selection and specific matching preprocessing ("coarsened exact matching", a novel approach in the field) are implemented. Regarding commuting distance, the true effect of built and social environment appears modest with an increase in the range of 10-20%. It comes behind individual socioeconomic characteristics such as car availability and qualification. Regarding commuting mode choice, again the true effect of built and social environment is modest, with a nearly 20%pt increase of car share and around 10%pt decrease or public transport share for the most prominent effects, and it comes behind car availability. These results suggest the primary importance of influencing directly car use, if not car ownership, in the European context, while trying to modify the built environment would provide only limited results.
