In order to mitigate the potentially dramatic effects of natural hazards, risk management measures are critical. However, the lack of interdisciplinary indicators and adaptable governance frameworks highlights society's vulnerability in the particular context of global environmental and climate change. This interdisciplinary research aimed at identifying reliable risk indicators and societal responses regarding natural hazards and climate change impacts to provide a governance framework for disaster risk reduction. Different societies face diverse risks and do not necessarily have the same level of local awareness of these risk. To explore the diversity of risks, two sites were selected from the Mediterranean basin, one chosen from the south coast (north Morocco) and the other from the north coast (the Italian island of Sardinia). North Morocco, a region of multi-risks, is characterised by high demographic and economic pressures; west Sardinia has remarkable biodiversity of wetlands and is characterised by high environmental and agricultural pressures, which in both cases intensify the vulnerability of the coastal areas. Testing for the local population's preparedness for future financial protection allowed for discussing the importance of risk awareness sessions or activities as an indicator of risk management. The significance of risk awareness sessions is shown in a quantitative part of the study, and its importance is also discussed with local stakeholders in north Morocco in a qualitative part of the study. It is shown that, although risk awareness sessions are recognised as important in risk management, they are not necessarily implemented. Based on these findings, further ideas on a new series of less descriptive, more dynamic and more user-friendly indicators are suggested. How can risk sessions be a dynamic indicator of a resilient society? The obtained results could serve in future governance frameworks for the mitigation of natural hazards in the Mediterranean region and more widely. Finally, the urgent need for continuous work to overcome the communication gap between the scientific community, risk administrators, civil society and the general population is emphasised. This formation already yielded the snake Gigantophis Andrews, 1901, studied by our friend Jean-Claude Rage. The chelonian specimens consist of a large carapace and a shell fragment of Bothremydidae, a family of Gondwanan origin. A new genus and species, Sindhochelys ragei n. gen., n. sp. is identified from the first specimen and named in honor of Jean-Claude Rage. It is the first report of a Bothremydidae in Southern Pakistan. Its affinities with Cretaceous and Paleocene representatives of the family are discussed. The association of characters such as the shape of the shell, anterior plastral scute pattern and strongly marked decoration characterize the taxon and, despite some similarities, allows excluding close phylogenetic affinities with Taphrosphyini and Carteremys group; other well-documented bothremydids are also excluded. The shell fragment, also strongly decorated, is left undetermined. The discovery of two new littoral bothremydid specimens in the early Paleocene of Pakistan fills a geographic and stratigraphic gap in our knowledge of the family, which is known since the continental early Cretaceous of Africa, diversifying in the world up to the Miocene deposits of the Neotethys. A particular diversification during the Maastrichtian-Paleocene is recognized along the neotethyan coasts, and occasional dispersals across this ocean were possible. Sindhochelys ragei n. gen., n. sp. may have colonized the Indian subcontinent by this time, or may represent an older diversification before the Gondwana breakup.

Gillot; Eveline Volcke;International audience; Even though sulfur compounds and their transformations may strongly affect wastewater treatment processes,their importance in water resource recovery facilities (WRRF) operation remains quite unexplored, notablywhen it comes to full-scale and plant-wide characterization. This contribution presents afirst-of-a-kind, plant-wide quantification of total sulfur massflows for all water and sludge streams in a full-scale WRRF. Because ofits important impact on (post-treatment) process operation, the gaseous emission of sulfur as hydrogen sulfide(H2S) was also included, thus enabling a comprehensive evaluation of sulfurflows. Data availability and qualitywere optimized by experimental design and data reconciliation, which were applied for thefirst time to total sul-furflows. Total sulfurflows were successfully balanced over individual process treatment units as well as theplant-wide system with only minor variation to their original values, confirming that total sulfur is a conservativequantity. The two-stage anaerobic digestion with intermediate thermal hydrolysis led to a decreased sulfur con-tent of dewatered sludge (by 36%). Higher (gaseous) H2S emissions were observed in the second-stage digester(42% of total emission) than in thefirst one, suggesting an impact of thermal treatment on the production of H2S.While the majority of sulfur massflow from the influent left the plant through the treated effluent (> 95%), thesulfur discharge through dewatered sludge and gaseous emissions are critical. The latter are indeed responsiblefor odour nuisance, lower biogas quality, SO2emissions upon sludge combustion and corrosion effects.

Golovin; Elisabeth d'Eyrames;Abstract Deep, carbonate-rich melts are key constituents of kimberlites and are crucial for understanding the cycle of volatile elements in the mantle. On the Siberian craton, the Udachnaya-East kimberlite hosts extremely well-preserved nodules composed of chlorides + carbonates + sulfates, that do not present any relict sedimentary textures. These salty nodules display textures that are commonly observed in quenched liquids and may thus represent the very last stage liquid of the kimberlite. Alternatively, they could represent assimilated sedimentary material, or even post-magmatic hydrothermal alteration, because kimberlites are known to ascend through the lithosphere while assimilating material from their wall rocks. Here we focus specifically on those chloride-carbonate nodules, which are composed of 70% chloride + 30% alkali-carbonate and sulfate, and used two radiogenic systems (Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd) and the isotopic composition of sulfur, in addition to their major and trace element compositions (n = 3). We then compared the results with the same geochemical data on host kimberlites (n = 4), sedimentary cover (n = 3) and hydrothermal veins (n = 3). Taken together, our results show that the nodules are not the product of a contamination by the Cambrian sedimentary cover. Trace element patterns of the nodules display extreme enrichments in the same elements that are relatively depleted in the host kimberlite but also in kimberlites worldwide (K, Rb, Sr, Pb), suggesting that chloride-carbonate nodules are snapshots of the latest stage liquid present in the kimberlite system. Their isotopic compositions (Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd and δ34S) are consistent with a common magmatic source with their host kimberlite. We propose that chloride-carbonate nodules record a missing compositional endmember, which could explain the trend towards more radiogenic Sr isotope ratios at nearly constant Nd signatures observed in their host kimberlite, as well as in other kimberlites worldwide. This observed trend suggests the presence of a recycled component with high Rb/Sr (such as salts or terrigenous sediments) in the mantle sampled by some kimberlites, either in the lithosphere or the asthenosphere. This study highlights that the role of alkalies and halogens may have been underestimated in the genesis of kimberlites at depths where diamonds are stable, as well as in more evolved magmatic stages. Segregations of chlorides and carbonates occur specifically in sulfate-bearing kimberlites, which may thus sample a mantle domain in which sulfates with δ34S > 0‰ are dominant. The existence of such a reservoir could explain the apparent imbalance observed between the chondritic value (δ34S of 0‰) and the negative S isotopic compositions of mantle sulfides (MORB and peridotites).

The hosts of long duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are predominantly starburst galaxies at subsolar metallicity. At redshifts z < 1, this implies that most of them are low-mass galaxies similar to the populations of blue compact dwarfs and dwarf irregulars. What triggers the massive star-formation needed for producing a GRB progenitor is still largely unknown, as are the resolved gas properties and kinematics of these galaxies and their formation history. Here we present a sample of six spatially resolved GRB hosts at z < 0.3 observed with 3D spectroscopy at high spectral resolution (R = 8000-13 000) using FLAMES/VLT. We analyzed the resolved gas kinematics of the full sample and the abundances in a subsample with strong enough emission lines. Only two galaxies show a regular disk-like rotation field, another two are dispersion-dominated, and the remaining ones have two narrow emission components associated with different parts of the galaxy but no regular rotation field, which might indicate a recent merger. All galaxies show evidence for broad components underlying the main emission peak with σ of 50-110 km s-1. This broad component is more metal-rich than the narrow components, it is blueshifted in most cases, and it follows a different velocity structure. We find a weak correlation between the star-formation rate and the width of the broad component, its flux compared to the narrow component, and the maximum outflow velocity of the gas, but we do not find any correlation with the star-formation density, metallicity or stellar mass. We hence associate this broad component with a metal-rich outflow from star-forming regions in the host. The GRB is not located in the brightest region of the host, but is always associated with some star-forming region showing a clear wind component. Our study shows the great potential of 3D spectroscopy to study the star-formation processes and history in galaxies hosting extreme transients, the need for high signal-To-noise, and the perils using unresolved or only partially resolved data for these kinds of studies. © ESO 2021. We measure the flux of the light blended with the microlensed source to be K = 16.79 +/- 0.04 mag and J = 17.76 +/- 0.03 mag. Assuming that the blend is the lens star, we find that the host is a $0.73_{-0.29}^{+0.14}$ M_Sun star at a distance of $2.67_{-1.41}^{+0.77}$ kpc, where the relatively large uncertainty in angular Einstein radius measurement is the major source of uncertainty. With mass of $M_p = 3.68_{-1.44}^{+0.69}$ M_J, the planet is likely a "super Jupiter" at a projected separation of $r_{\perp} = 4.53_{-2.50}^{+1.49}$ AU, and a degenerate model yields a similar $M_p = 3.73_{-1.47}^{+0.73}$ M_J at a closer separation of $r_{\perp} = 2.56_{-1.41}^{+0.84}$ AU. Our estimates are consistent with the previous Bayesian analysis based on a Galactic model. OGLE-2014-BLG-0676Lb belongs to a sample of planets discovered in a "second-generation" planetary microlensing survey, and we attempt to systematically constrain host properties of this sample with high-resolution imaging to study the distribution of planets. Due to its position, connecting northern Europe and the Mediterranean basin, this corridor and the surrounding plateaus are of particular interest in the study of human cultural evolution, including the emergence of Middle Palaeolithic technology around 300,000 years ago and its variability over time, as well as the subsistence and mobility strategies of Neanderthals. In the last 20 years, several research projects undertaken in this region allowed to revise key Middle Palaeolithic sequences. This work aims at synthesising previous and new chronological data obtained by using uranium-series of speleothems and bones, infrared stimulated luminescence of feldspar and electron spin resonance of tooth enamel and quartz. We review previous ages obtained in the area and present 43 new ages that are discussed together to propose a reliable spatiotemporal framework for Neanderthal occupations. We focus on major sites in the region: Payre, Ranc-Pointu 2, Baume Flandin, Abri du Maras, Grotte des Barasses II, Abri des Pêcheurs, Grotte du Figuier and Grotte de Saint-Marcel. They all provided significant information related to the biological and behavioural evolution of Neanderthal populations on the right bank of the Rhône valley. We present here the updated chronology for the Middle Palaeolithic of this area, ranging from ca. 300,000 to 40,000 years ago.

They were followed, in the Neoarchean (2.75–2.73 Ga), by numerous stocks of granitoids similar to A-type granites (Vila Jussara Suite). Despite the compositional differences between these granitoids, epidote is a mineral phase common to all of them, with pistacite contents of 26–29 mol% in TTGs, 22–33 mol% in sanukitoids and 25–30 mol% in Neoarchean granitoids. The study of the dissolution kinetics of Archean epidotes of the Carajás Province reveals that the partial dissolution time of their crystals was ∼4–10 years, with corresponding magma ascent rates of 4–8 km/year. Magma viscosities at liquidus temperature were estimated at 105.3 Pa s for TTG magma and 102.5 Pa s for sanukitoid magma, whereas monzogranitic magmas of the Vila Jussara Suite exhibited a viscosity of 104.4 Pa s. In contrast, the viscosity of tonalitic magma of the Vila Jussara Suite was 103.5 Pa s. The preservation of magmatic epidote in Archean granitoids requires that the plutons grew in an incremental way, similar to their Phanerozoic counterparts, with the stacking of small sill-dykes of about 100 m thickness each intruded in a rather cold crust, allowing fast cooling rates so as to prevent complete dissolution of epidote at the final emplacement level.

The aim is to investigate the effect of two different microphysics schemes, the one-moment scheme ICE3 and the quasi two-moment scheme LIMA, on the WCB and the ridge building downstream. ICE3 and LIMA also differ in the processes of vapor deposition on hydrometeors in cold and mixed-phase clouds. Latent heating in ICE3 is found to be dominated by deposition on ice while the heating in LIMA is distributed among depositions on ice, snow, and graupel. ICE3 is the scheme leading to the largest number of WCB trajectories (30% more than LIMA) due to greater heating rates over larger areas. The consequence is that the size of the upper-level ridge grows more rapidly in ICE3 than LIMA, albeit with some exceptions in localized regions of the cyclonic branch of the WCB. A comparison with various observations (airborne remote sensing measurements, dropsondes, and satellite data) is then performed. Below the melting layer, the observed reflectivity is rather well reproduced by the model. Above the melting layer, in the middle of the troposphere, the reflectivity and retrieved ice water content are largely underestimated by both schemes while at upper levels, the ICE3 scheme performs much better than LIMA in agreement with a closer representation of the observed winds by ICE3. These results underline the strong sensitivity of upper-level dynamics to ice-related processes.

The atmospheric chemistry of halogenated species (Cl, Br, I) participates in the global chemical sink of tropospheric ozone and perturbs the oxidising capacity of the troposphere, notably by influencing the atmospheric lifetime of methane. Global chemistry-climate models are commonly used to assess the global budget of ozone and its sensitivity to emissions of its precursors, as well as to project its long-term evolution. Here, we report on the implementation of tropospheric sources and chemistry of halogens in the chemistry-climate model LMDZ-INCA (Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique general circulation model, LMDZ, and Interactions with Chemistry and Aerosols, INCA, version with Non-Methane HydroCarbon chemistry, vNMHC) and evaluate halogen effects on the tropospheric ozone budget. Overall, the results show that the model simulates satisfactorily the impact of halogens on the photo-oxidising system in the troposphere, in particular in the marine boundary layer. To quantify the effects of halogen chemistry in LMDZ-INCA, standard metrics representative of the behaviour of the tropospheric chemical system (Ox, HOx, NOx, CH4 and non-methane volatile organic compounds - NMVOCs) are computed with and without halogens. The addition of tropospheric halogens in the LMDZ-INCA model leads to a decrease of 22 % in the ozone burden, 8 % in OH and 33 % in NOx. Sensitivity simulations show for the first time that the inclusion of halogen chemistry makes ozone more sensitive to perturbations in CH4, NOx and NMVOCs. Consistent with other global model studies, the sensitivity of the tropospheric ozone burden to changes from pre-industrial to present-day emissions is found to be ∼20 % lower when tropospheric halogens are taken into account. In order to mitigate the potentially dramatic effects of natural hazards, risk management measures are critical. However, the lack of interdisciplinary indicators and adaptable governance frameworks highlights society's vulnerability in the particular context of global environmental and climate change. This interdisciplinary research aimed at identifying reliable risk indicators and societal responses regarding natural hazards and climate change impacts to provide a governance framework for disaster risk reduction. Different societies face diverse risks and do not necessarily have the same level of local awareness of these risk. To explore the diversity of risks, two sites were selected from the Mediterranean basin, one chosen from the south coast (north Morocco) and the other from the north coast (the Italian island of Sardinia). North Morocco, a region of multi-risks, is characterised by high demographic and economic pressures; west Sardinia has remarkable biodiversity of wetlands and is characterised by high environmental and agricultural pressures, which in both cases intensify the vulnerability of the coastal areas. Testing for the local population's preparedness for future financial protection allowed for discussing the importance of risk awareness sessions or activities as an indicator of risk management. The significance of risk awareness sessions is shown in a quantitative part of the study, and its importance is also discussed with local stakeholders in north Morocco in a qualitative part of the study. It is shown that, although risk awareness sessions are recognised as important in risk management, they are not necessarily implemented. Based on these findings, further ideas on a new series of less descriptive, more dynamic and more user-friendly indicators are suggested. How can risk sessions be a dynamic indicator of a resilient society? The obtained results could serve in future governance frameworks for the mitigation of natural hazards in the Mediterranean region and more widely. Finally, the urgent need for continuous work to overcome the communication gap between the scientific community, risk administrators, civil society and the general population is emphasised. This formation already yielded the snake Gigantophis Andrews, 1901, studied by our friend Jean-Claude Rage. The chelonian specimens consist of a large carapace and a shell fragment of Bothremydidae, a family of Gondwanan origin. A new genus and species, Sindhochelys ragei n. gen., n. sp. is identified from the first specimen and named in honor of Jean-Claude Rage. It is the first report of a Bothremydidae in Southern Pakistan. Its affinities with Cretaceous and Paleocene representatives of the family are discussed. The association of characters such as the shape of the shell, anterior plastral scute pattern and strongly marked decoration characterize the taxon and, despite some similarities, allows excluding close phylogenetic affinities with Taphrosphyini and Carteremys group; other well-documented bothremydids are also excluded. The shell fragment, also strongly decorated, is left undetermined. The discovery of two new littoral bothremydid specimens in the early Paleocene of Pakistan fills a geographic and stratigraphic gap in our knowledge of the family, which is known since the continental early Cretaceous of Africa, diversifying in the world up to the Miocene deposits of the Neotethys. A particular diversification during the Maastrichtian-Paleocene is recognized along the neotethyan coasts, and occasional dispersals across this ocean were possible. Sindhochelys ragei n. gen., n. sp. may have colonized the Indian subcontinent by this time, or may represent an older diversification before the Gondwana breakup.

This contribution presents afirst-of-a-kind, plant-wide quantification of total sulfur massflows for all water and sludge streams in a full-scale WRRF. Because ofits important impact on (post-treatment) process operation, the gaseous emission of sulfur as hydrogen sulfide(H2S) was also included, thus enabling a comprehensive evaluation of sulfurflows. Data availability and qualitywere optimized by experimental design and data reconciliation, which were applied for thefirst time to total sul-furflows. Total sulfurflows were successfully balanced over individual process treatment units as well as theplant-wide system with only minor variation to their original values, confirming that total sulfur is a conservativequantity. The two-stage anaerobic digestion with intermediate thermal hydrolysis led to a decreased sulfur con-tent of dewatered sludge (by 36%). Higher (gaseous) H2S emissions were observed in the second-stage digester(42% of total emission) than in thefirst one, suggesting an impact of thermal treatment on the production of H2S.While the majority of sulfur massflow from the influent left the plant through the treated effluent (> 95%), thesulfur discharge through dewatered sludge and gaseous emissions are critical. The latter are indeed responsiblefor odour nuisance, lower biogas quality, SO2emissions upon sludge combustion and corrosion effects.

Golovin; Elisabeth d'Eyrames;Abstract Deep, carbonate-rich melts are key constituents of kimberlites and are crucial for understanding the cycle of volatile elements in the mantle. On the Siberian craton, the Udachnaya-East kimberlite hosts extremely well-preserved nodules composed of chlorides + carbonates + sulfates, that do not present any relict sedimentary textures. These salty nodules display textures that are commonly observed in quenched liquids and may thus represent the very last stage liquid of the kimberlite. Alternatively, they could represent assimilated sedimentary material, or even post-magmatic hydrothermal alteration, because kimberlites are known to ascend through the lithosphere while assimilating material from their wall rocks. Here we focus specifically on those chloride-carbonate nodules, which are composed of 70% chloride + 30% alkali-carbonate and sulfate, and used two radiogenic systems (Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd) and the isotopic composition of sulfur, in addition to their major and trace element compositions (n = 3). We then compared the results with the same geochemical data on host kimberlites (n = 4), sedimentary cover (n = 3) and hydrothermal veins (n = 3). Taken together, our results show that the nodules are not the product of a contamination by the Cambrian sedimentary cover. Trace element patterns of the nodules display extreme enrichments in the same elements that are relatively depleted in the host kimberlite but also in kimberlites worldwide (K, Rb, Sr, Pb), suggesting that chloride-carbonate nodules are snapshots of the latest stage liquid present in the kimberlite system. Their isotopic compositions (Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd and δ34S) are consistent with a common magmatic source with their host kimberlite. We propose that chloride-carbonate nodules record a missing compositional endmember, which could explain the trend towards more radiogenic Sr isotope ratios at nearly constant Nd signatures observed in their host kimberlite, as well as in other kimberlites worldwide. This observed trend suggests the presence of a recycled component with high Rb/Sr (such as salts or terrigenous sediments) in the mantle sampled by some kimberlites, either in the lithosphere or the asthenosphere. This study highlights that the role of alkalies and halogens may have been underestimated in the genesis of kimberlites at depths where diamonds are stable, as well as in more evolved magmatic stages. Segregations of chlorides and carbonates occur specifically in sulfate-bearing kimberlites, which may thus sample a mantle domain in which sulfates with δ34S > 0‰ are dominant. The existence of such a reservoir could explain the apparent imbalance observed between the chondritic value (δ34S of 0‰) and the negative S isotopic compositions of mantle sulfides (MORB and peridotites).

The hosts of long duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are predominantly starburst galaxies at subsolar metallicity. At redshifts z < 1, this implies that most of them are low-mass galaxies similar to the populations of blue compact dwarfs and dwarf irregulars. What triggers the massive star-formation needed for producing a GRB progenitor is still largely unknown, as are the resolved gas properties and kinematics of these galaxies and their formation history. Here we present a sample of six spatially resolved GRB hosts at z < 0.3 observed with 3D spectroscopy at high spectral resolution (R = 8000-13 000) using FLAMES/VLT. We analyzed the resolved gas kinematics of the full sample and the abundances in a subsample with strong enough emission lines. Only two galaxies show a regular disk-like rotation field, another two are dispersion-dominated, and the remaining ones have two narrow emission components associated with different parts of the galaxy but no regular rotation field, which might indicate a recent merger. All galaxies show evidence for broad components underlying the main emission peak with σ of 50-110 km s-1. This broad component is more metal-rich than the narrow components, it is blueshifted in most cases, and it follows a different velocity structure. We find a weak correlation between the star-formation rate and the width of the broad component, its flux compared to the narrow component, and the maximum outflow velocity of the gas, but we do not find any correlation with the star-formation density, metallicity or stellar mass. We hence associate this broad component with a metal-rich outflow from star-forming regions in the host. The GRB is not located in the brightest region of the host, but is always associated with some star-forming region showing a clear wind component. Our study shows the great potential of 3D spectroscopy to study the star-formation processes and history in galaxies hosting extreme transients, the need for high signal-To-noise, and the perils using unresolved or only partially resolved data for these kinds of studies. © ESO 2021. We measure the flux of the light blended with the microlensed source to be K = 16.79 +/- 0.04 mag and J = 17.76 +/- 0.03 mag. Assuming that the blend is the lens star, we find that the host is a $0.73_{-0.29}^{+0.14}$ M_Sun star at a distance of $2.67_{-1.41}^{+0.77}$ kpc, where the relatively large uncertainty in angular Einstein radius measurement is the major source of uncertainty. With mass of $M_p = 3.68_{-1.44}^{+0.69}$ M_J, the planet is likely a "super Jupiter" at a projected separation of $r_{\perp} = 4.53_{-2.50}^{+1.49}$ AU, and a degenerate model yields a similar $M_p = 3.73_{-1.47}^{+0.73}$ M_J at a closer separation of $r_{\perp} = 2.56_{-1.41}^{+0.84}$ AU. Our estimates are consistent with the previous Bayesian analysis based on a Galactic model. OGLE-2014-BLG-0676Lb belongs to a sample of planets discovered in a "second-generation" planetary microlensing survey, and we attempt to systematically constrain host properties of this sample with high-resolution imaging to study the distribution of planets. Due to its position, connecting northern Europe and the Mediterranean basin, this corridor and the surrounding plateaus are of particular interest in the study of human cultural evolution, including the emergence of Middle Palaeolithic technology around 300,000 years ago and its variability over time, as well as the subsistence and mobility strategies of Neanderthals. In the last 20 years, several research projects undertaken in this region allowed to revise key Middle Palaeolithic sequences. This work aims at synthesising previous and new chronological data obtained by using uranium-series of speleothems and bones, infrared stimulated luminescence of feldspar and electron spin resonance of tooth enamel and quartz. We review previous ages obtained in the area and present 43 new ages that are discussed together to propose a reliable spatiotemporal framework for Neanderthal occupations. We focus on major sites in the region: Payre, Ranc-Pointu 2, Baume Flandin, Abri du Maras, Grotte des Barasses II, Abri des Pêcheurs, Grotte du Figuier and Grotte de Saint-Marcel. They all provided significant information related to the biological and behavioural evolution of Neanderthal populations on the right bank of the Rhône valley. We present here the updated chronology for the Middle Palaeolithic of this area, ranging from ca. 300,000 to 40,000 years ago.

They were followed, in the Neoarchean (2.75–2.73 Ga), by numerous stocks of granitoids similar to A-type granites (Vila Jussara Suite). Despite the compositional differences between these granitoids, epidote is a mineral phase common to all of them, with pistacite contents of 26–29 mol% in TTGs, 22–33 mol% in sanukitoids and 25–30 mol% in Neoarchean granitoids. The study of the dissolution kinetics of Archean epidotes of the Carajás Province reveals that the partial dissolution time of their crystals was ∼4–10 years, with corresponding magma ascent rates of 4–8 km/year. Magma viscosities at liquidus temperature were estimated at 105.3 Pa s for TTG magma and 102.5 Pa s for sanukitoid magma, whereas monzogranitic magmas of the Vila Jussara Suite exhibited a viscosity of 104.4 Pa s. In contrast, the viscosity of tonalitic magma of the Vila Jussara Suite was 103.5 Pa s. The preservation of magmatic epidote in Archean granitoids requires that the plutons grew in an incremental way, similar to their Phanerozoic counterparts, with the stacking of small sill-dykes of about 100 m thickness each intruded in a rather cold crust, allowing fast cooling rates so as to prevent complete dissolution of epidote at the final emplacement level.

The aim is to investigate the effect of two different microphysics schemes, the one-moment scheme ICE3 and the quasi two-moment scheme LIMA, on the WCB and the ridge building downstream. ICE3 and LIMA also differ in the processes of vapor deposition on hydrometeors in cold and mixed-phase clouds. Latent heating in ICE3 is found to be dominated by deposition on ice while the heating in LIMA is distributed among depositions on ice, snow, and graupel. ICE3 is the scheme leading to the largest number of WCB trajectories (30% more than LIMA) due to greater heating rates over larger areas. The consequence is that the size of the upper-level ridge grows more rapidly in ICE3 than LIMA, albeit with some exceptions in localized regions of the cyclonic branch of the WCB. A comparison with various observations (airborne remote sensing measurements, dropsondes, and satellite data) is then performed. Below the melting layer, the observed reflectivity is rather well reproduced by the model. Above the melting layer, in the middle of the troposphere, the reflectivity and retrieved ice water content are largely underestimated by both schemes while at upper levels, the ICE3 scheme performs much better than LIMA in agreement with a closer representation of the observed winds by ICE3. These results underline the strong sensitivity of upper-level dynamics to ice-related processes.

The atmospheric chemistry of halogenated species (Cl, Br, I) participates in the global chemical sink of tropospheric ozone and perturbs the oxidising capacity of the troposphere, notably by influencing the atmospheric lifetime of methane. Global chemistry-climate models are commonly used to assess the global budget of ozone and its sensitivity to emissions of its precursors, as well as to project its long-term evolution. Here, we report on the implementation of tropospheric sources and chemistry of halogens in the chemistry-climate model LMDZ-INCA (Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique general circulation model, LMDZ, and Interactions with Chemistry and Aerosols, INCA, version with Non-Methane HydroCarbon chemistry, vNMHC) and evaluate halogen effects on the tropospheric ozone budget. Overall, the results show that the model simulates satisfactorily the impact of halogens on the photo-oxidising system in the troposphere, in particular in the marine boundary layer. To quantify the effects of halogen chemistry in LMDZ-INCA, standard metrics representative of the behaviour of the tropospheric chemical system (Ox, HOx, NOx, CH4 and non-methane volatile organic compounds - NMVOCs) are computed with and without halogens. The addition of tropospheric halogens in the LMDZ-INCA model leads to a decrease of 22 % in the ozone burden, 8 % in OH and 33 % in NOx. Sensitivity simulations show for the first time that the inclusion of halogen chemistry makes ozone more sensitive to perturbations in CH4, NOx and NMVOCs. Consistent with other global model studies, the sensitivity of the tropospheric ozone burden to changes from pre-industrial to present-day emissions is found to be ∼20 % lower when tropospheric halogens are taken into account.
