Quelles surfaces ? Selon quelles méthodes ? Dans quel but ?

The Covid-19 pandemic is a major global event. A reflection on the first implications of this sanitary crisis for the world agricultural economy and the animal sectors of three geographical areas is proposed in this article. The agri-food systems have been strongly affected by this crisis, whose global economic impacts (a 3.5% drop in world gross domestic product and a 5.3% drop in international trade in goods between 2019 and 2020) are affecting the purchasing power of final consumers. However, they have resisted the crisis well, both in terms of supply (stability or slight growth in the volumes of meat and milk produced on a global scale) and trade. In 2021, the sharp rise in international prices for agricultural products and the rapid resumption of economic growth, particularly in the three zones more specifically studied here (China, the United States and the European Union), suggest that agriculture should remain under pressure from sustained world demand. More than Covid-19, the impact of African swine fever in China has had a major impact on international meat trade flows for several years. In addition, the growing Chinese appetite for dairy products is playing a central role in the development of international dairy markets, to the benefit of exporting areas including the EU and the US.

Connected objects arouse a significant interest in the area of occupational health. Massive data collection could be used to design and implement policies that promote well-being at work, safety and health of employees. The paper reports on the promotion of this idea and the existing technological offer, and then considers specifically the experimentation of a connected cube. It is tested within a wider innovation process that should help to design how to support workplace health policies of companies. The paper shows that, although only collecting data on the more or less comfortable character of work environment, its deployment is complicated. Technical and user reception barriers occur. Beyond that, it is especially the lack of awareness of the activity which is actually missing.

However, COVID-19 pandemic has recently pushed several microbusinesses (MBs) to hurriedly initiate digital transformation (DT) efforts and keep their businesses afloat (Mandviwalla & Flanagan, 2021). MBs comprise a class of small and medium enterprise category (SMEs) that typically have fewer than 10 employees and lesser resources (OECD, 2021). They represent about 93 percent of all businesses in the Europe (European Commission, 2019). Their economic significance is also shown through ha survey which predicted that by 2024 small businesses through their DT efforts have the potential to add over 2.3 trillion USD to the global GDP, which would be key for the post pandemic economic recovery (CISCO, 2020). Prior research has shown that DT effectiveness varies significantly with firm size (Mandviwalla & Flanagan, 2021). Following these, the aim of our study is to examine to identify the enablers and inhibitors of digital transformation within the MB sector in Ireland.

This paper analyses the influence of European farmers’ responsiveness to changes in agri-commodity prices on how they manage the trade-offs between agricultural expansion and forestland preservation. In so doing, we rely on a comprehensive dataset relating to European agricultural holdings over the period of 2008–2017, covering 128 regions, and use a recursive equation system that links commodity prices to economic output per area, and the latter to forestland privately owned by farmers. Controlling for farm characteristics, geographical spillovers as well as regressor endogeneity, we find results suggesting that there is indeed evidence of such a trade-off. Specifically, with increased prices, European agricultural holdings expand crop production (respectively agricultural land), which reversely conflicts with private forestland. Replicating the analysis on different subsamples confirms the robustness of these findings. Based on these results, we advocate for further incentive towards the preservation of forests privately owned by agricultural holdings.

In this article we present a simple theoretical setup to address this question and to evaluate some policy options. We study a model of strategic competition among farmers for the conversion of a natural forest to agricultural land. Unconverted forest land allows to conserve biodiversity, which contributes to reducing the volatility of agricultural production. Agents' utility is given in terms of a Kreps Porteus stochastic differential utility capable of disentangling risk aversion and aversion to fluctuations. We characterize the land used by each farmer and her welfare at the Nash equilibrium, we evaluate the overexploitation of the land and the agents' welfare loss compared to the socially optimal solution and we study the drivers of the inefficiencies of the decentralized equilibrium. After characterizing the value of biodiversity in the model, we use it to obtain a decomposition which helps to study the policy implications of the model by identifying in which cases the allocation of property rights is preferable to the introduction of a tax on land conversion. Our results suggest that enforcing property rights is more relevant in case of stagnant economies while taxing land conversion may be more suited for rapidly developing economies.

The little prince asked Saint-Exupéry to draw him a sheep, but what if he had asked him to be drawn Science? How could he have done it and what could we have learned from it? In this article, we address the question of ``drawing science'' by taking advantage of the massive digitization of scientific production, and focusing on its body of knowledge. We demonstrate how we can reconstruct, from the massive digital traces of science, a reasonably precise and concise approximation of its dynamical structures that can be grasped by the human mind and explored interactively. For this purpose, we formalize the notion of level and scale of knowledge dynamics as complex systems and we introduce a new formal definition for phylomemetic networks as dynamical reconstruction of knowledge dynamics. We propose a new reconstruction algorithm for phylomemetic networks that outperforms previous ones and demonstrate how this approach also makes it possible to define a new temporal clustering on dynamical graphs. Finally, we show in case studies that this approach produces representations of knowledge dynamics close to the ones that can be obtained by synthesizing the points of view of experts on a given domain.

I measure drought in a Differencesin-Differences (DID) framework, as an alternative to the standard approaches decomposing the effects from climate and yearly weather deviations on agricultural productivity and those using the growing degree days and harmful degree days. In the short-term and mediumterm, rural households adapt to the drought of 2010 by increasing the total area planted in crops and livestock, (increasing also the total gross agricultural productivity in value terms) and by working more on the farm. The droughts also increased the use of external sources of water in the farm and made rural households postpone non-housing investments in the farm. I find heterogeneous effects according to the long run mean of temperature in the municipality. Higher temperature affects positively gross agricultural productivity in low-temperature municipalities but negatively high-temperature municipalities. Cereals and coffee seem to benefit from higher temperatures, while vegetables and fruits are more affected.
