description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object , Article , Contribution for newspaper or weekly magazine 2023 Denmark, FrancePublisher:IOP Publishing Authors: Abraham, Aliza; Ramos-García, Néstor; Sørensen, Jens, Nørkær; Leweke, Thomas;Abraham, Aliza; Ramos-García, Néstor; Sørensen, Jens, Nørkær; Leweke, Thomas;Abstract Tip vortices in the wakes of wind turbines are known to have detrimental effects on downstream turbines such as reduced performance and increased fatigue loading. Rotor asymmetry is investigated as a passive method for mitigating these effects by triggering the helical vortex pairing instability. The study is conducted using MIRAS, a multi-fidelity vortex solver, to compare the wakes of the standard NREL 5MW turbine and a modified asymmetric version where one blade is extended radially relative to the other two. The asymmetric rotor is shown to successfully trigger the vortex instability, increasing the wake average velocity by a maximum of 3.5% and the power available to a downstream turbine by up to 11%. The turbulence in the wake of the asymmetric rotor is also modified, exhibiting enhanced mixing. Using the available power gains from the simulations and operational data from the Lillgrund wind farm, the total impact of rotor asymmetry on wind farm efficiency is estimated, showing increases > 2% under certain wind conditions. The findings of this study indicate that rotor asymmetry has strong potential as a wake control method and would benefit from further investigation to understand the effects of inflow turbulence and the impacts on rotor loading.

The major upgrades with respect to the Advanced Virgo configuration are the implementation of an additional recycling cavity, the Signal Recycling cavity (SRC), at the output of the interferometer to broaden the sensitivity band and the Frequency Dependent Squeezing (FDS) to reduce quantum noise at all frequencies. The main difference of the Advanced Virgo + detector with respect to the LIGO detectors is the presence of marginally stable recycling cavities, with respect to the stable recycling cavities present in the LIGO detectors, which increases the difficulties in controlling the interferometer in presence of defects (both thermal and cold defects). This work will focus on the interferometer commissioning, highlighting the control challenges to maintain the detector in the working point which maximizes the sensitivity and the duty cycle for scientific data taking.

The major upgrade will concern decreasing the thermal noise limit, which will imply using very large test masses and increased laser beam size. But this will not be the only upgrade to be implemented in the break between the O4 and O5 observation runs to increase the Virgo detector strain sensitivity. The paper will cover the challenges linked to this upgrade and implications on the detector’s reach and observational potential, reflecting the talk given at 12th Cosmic Ray International Seminar - CRIS 2022 held in September 2022 in Napoli.

A key feature of this method is exponential error reduction, which allows us to evaluate the density of states of a system over hundreds of thousands of orders of magnitude with a fixed level of relative accuracy. As a consequence of exponential error reduction, the LLR method provides a robust alternative to traditional Monte Carlo calculations in cases in which states suppressed by the Boltzmann weight play nevertheless a relevant role, e.g., as transition regions between dominant configuration sets. After reviewing the algorithm, we will show an application in U(1) Lattice Gauge Theory that has enabled us to obtain the most accurate estimate of the critical coupling with modest computational resources, defeating exponential tunneling times between metastable vacua. As a further showcase, we will then present an application of the LLR method to the decorrelation of the topological charge in SU(3) Lattice Gauge Theory near the continuum limit. Finally, we will review in general applications of the LLR algorithm to systems affected by a strong sign problem and discuss the case of the Bose gas at finite chemical potential. Our aim is to teach a pre-trained MT model to translate previously unseen words accurately, based on very few examples. We propose (i) an experimental setup allowing us to simulate novel vocabulary appearing in human-submitted translations, and (ii) corresponding evaluation metrics to compare our approaches. We extend a data augmentation approach using a pre-trained language model to create training examples with similar contexts for novel words. We compare different fine-tuning and data augmentation approaches and show that adaptation on the scale of one to five examples is possible. Combining data augmentation with randomly selected training sentences leads to the highest BLEU score and accuracy improvements. Impressively, with only 1 to 5 examples, our model reports better accuracy scores than a reference system trained with on average 313 parallel examples. 14 pages includince 3 of appendices

The neutron rich carbon isotope 15C is the only known case of an almost "pure" 2s1/2 single-neutron halo ground state configuration. At collision energies around the Coulomb barrier the reaction dynamics is expected to be dominated by single neutron transfer and breakup. To investigate these effects, we have measured the scattering of 15C with a 208Pb target at 65 MeV at the HIE-ISOLDE facility in CERN (Geneva, Switzerland). The preliminary data demonstrates the presence of a strong long-range absorption pattern in the angular distribution of the elastic cross section. The results are discussed in the framework of Optical Model calculations. J. D. Ovejas is grateful to CSIC (Spain) for the PhD fellowship BES2016-077059. Phase I of the OC6 project is focused on examining why offshore wind design tools underpredict the response (loads/motion) of the OC5-DeepCwind semisubmersible at its surge and pitch natural frequencies. Previous investigations showed that the underprediction was primarily related to nonlinear hydrodynamic loading, so two new validation campaigns were performed to separately examine the different hydrodynamic load components. In this paper, we validate a variety of tools against this new test data, focusing on the ability to accurately model the low-frequency loads on a semisubmersible floater when held fixed under wave excitation and when forced to oscillate in the surge direction. However, it is observed that models providing better load predictions in these two scenarios do not necessarily produce a more accurate motion response in a moored configuration.

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object , Article , Contribution for newspaper or weekly magazine 2023 Denmark, FrancePublisher:IOP Publishing Authors: Abraham, Aliza; Ramos-García, Néstor; Sørensen, Jens, Nørkær; Leweke, Thomas;Abraham, Aliza; Ramos-García, Néstor; Sørensen, Jens, Nørkær; Leweke, Thomas;Abstract Tip vortices in the wakes of wind turbines are known to have detrimental effects on downstream turbines such as reduced performance and increased fatigue loading.
