Nitrogen (N) is essential for plant growth and protein synthesis but global reactive N losses, mainly from food systems, induce strong environmental impacts.N losses after human excretion are often overlooked because, in Western societies, they partly occur as inert N2, following denitrification in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), and losses in waters are often small compared to diffuse agricultural emissions.Yet N from human excretions could be used for crop fertilization, potentially with very high recycling rates via source separation. In this study we use unique operational data from the ~20,000 French WWTPs to produce a N mass-balance of excretions in the French sanitation system.Even though 75% of WWTPs' sludge is spread on crops, only 10% of the excreted N is recycled and 50% of N is lost to the atmosphere, mainly through WWTP nitrification-denitrification.The remaining 40% ends up in water or in diffuse losses in the ground, of which about half is lost outside of the WWTPs' discharge system, through sewers storm water and individual autonomous systems. While WWTPs removal efficiency increased in the 2000s, it has been followed by a decade of stagnation, reaching 70% at the national level. This national average hides regional discrepancies, from 60 to 85% in the 6 French water agencies basins. These differences closely correlate with the classification as ''N sensitive areas'' and is mainly due to large WWTPs which handle most of the N load.Recycling all N in excretions could supply 10% of domestic protein consumption in the current French food system, and up to 30% if it is prioritized towards crop production for human consumption.Redesigning the food system (decrease of nutrient losses, more plant-based diets) could further increase this contribution Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2310.06461

We study the relation between supersymmetry and geometric flows driven by the Bianchi identity for the three-form flux $H$ in heterotic supergravity. We describe how the flow equations can be derived from a functional that appears in a rewriting of the bosonic action in terms of squares of supersymmetry operators. On a complex threefold, the resulting equations match what is known in the mathematics literature as "anomaly flow". We generalise this to seven- and eight-manifolds with G$_2$ or Spin(7) structures and discuss examples where the manifold is a torus fibration over a K3 surface. In the latter cases, the flow simplifies to a single scalar equation, with the existence of the supergravity solution implied by the long-time existence and convergence of the flow. We also comment on the $\alpha'$ expansion and highlight the importance of using the proper connection in the Bianchi identity to ensure that the flow's fixed points satisfy the supergravity equations of motion. Abstract. The motions of the liquid within the Earth's outer core lead to magnetic field variations together with mass distribution changes. As the core is not accessible for direct observation, our knowledge of the Earth’s liquid core dynamics only relies on indirect information sources. Mainly generated by the core dynamics, the surface geomagnetic field provides information about the variations of the fluid motion at the top of the core. The dynamic of the fluid core is also associated with mass distribution changes inside the core and produces gravitational field time fluctuations. By applying several statistical blind source separation methods to both the gravity and magnetic field time series, we investigate the common space–time variabilities. We report several robust interannual oscillations shared by the two observation sets. Among those, a common mode of around 7 years looks very significant. Whereas the nature of the driving mechanism of the coupled variability remains unclear, the spatial and temporal properties of the common signal are compatible with a core origin.

This paper reports the first measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions without pions in the final state using multiple detectors with correlated energy spectra at T2K. The data was collected on hydrocarbon targets using the off-axis T2K near detector (ND280) and the on-axis T2K near detector (INGRID) with neutrino energy spectra peaked at 0.6 GeV and 1.1 GeV respectively. The correlated neutrino flux presents an opportunity to reduce the impact of the flux uncertainty and to study the energy dependence of neutrino interactions. The extracted double-differential cross sections are compared to several Monte Carlo neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators showing the agreement between both detectors individually and with the correlated result. AbstractIncreasing extreme climate events driven by climate change raise the question of their impacts on the power production system, and implications for renewable versus fossil power supply. Here, using climate reanalysis data and daily electricity generation (2018–2023), we systematically quantify the impact of extreme climate events, specifically extreme cold events and extreme hot events on United States state-level carbon emissions and on the carbon intensity of electricity. We find that extreme climate events increase the carbon intensity of the energy production, increasing the reliance on fossil-based sources of energy and reducing the capacity of renewables. The states with more renewable electricity generation were also more affected by extreme temperatures. Our results reveal the extent to which the reliability and resilience of the current United States electricity system depends on fossil energy during extreme climate events, and suggest a need for adaptation measures as the country will transition to higher shares of renewable energy while extreme events will become more frequent.

Mineral dust produced by wind erosion of arid and semi-arid surfaces is a major component of atmospheric aerosol that affects climate, weather, ecosystems, and socio-economic sectors such as human health, transportation, solar energy, and air quality. Understanding these effects and ultimately improving the resilience of affected countries requires a reliable, dense, and diverse set of dust observations, fundamental for the development and the provision of skillful dust forecasts tailored products. The last decade has seen a notable improvement of dust observational capabilities in terms of considered parameters, geographical coverage, and delivery times, as well as of tailored products of interest to both the scientific community and the various end-users. Given this progress, here we review the current state of observational capabilities including in-situ, ground-based and satellite remote sensing observations, in Northern Africa, the Middle East and Europe for the provision of dust information considering the needs of various users. We also critically discuss observational gaps and related unresolved questions while providing suggestions for overcoming the current limitations. Our review aims to be a milestone for discussing dust observational gaps at a global level to address the needs of users, from research communities to nonscientific stakeholders "Article signat per 26 autors/es: Lucia Mona, Vassilis Amiridis, Emilio Cuevas, Antonis Gkikas, Serena Trippetta, Sophie Vandenbussche, Angela Benedetti, Pavla Dagsson-Waldhauserova, Paola Formenti, Alexander Haefele, Stelios Kazadzis, Peter Knippertz, Benoit Laurent, Fabio Madonna, Slobodan Nickovic, Nikolaos Papagiannopoulos, Gelsomina Pappalardo, Carlos Pérez García-Pando, Thomas Popp, Sergio Rodríguez, Andrea Sealy, Nobuo Sugimoto, Enric Terradellas, Ana Vukovic Vimic, Bernadette Weinzierl, and Sara Basart " Peer Reviewed

We study the motion of a gyroscope located far away from an isolated gravitational source in an asymptotically flat spacetime. As seen from a local frame tied to distant stars, the gyroscope precesses when gravitational waves cross its path, resulting in a net "orientation memory" that carries information on the wave profile. At leading order in the inverse distance to the source, the memory consists of two terms: the first is linear in the metric perturbation and coincides with the spin memory effect, while the second is quadratic and measures the net helicity of the wave burst. Both are closely related to symmetries of the gravitational radiative phase space at null infinity: spin memory probes superrotation charges, while helicity is the canonical generator of local electric-magnetic duality on the celestial sphere. 23 pages, 2 figures. V2: Added references and minor corrections. V3: Expanded section 4.2 on symmetries, and new section 5 (conclusion); more references added. To appear in JHEP

This study is supported by the RI-URBANS project (Research Infrastructures Services Reinforcing Air Quality Monitoring Capacities in European Urban & amp; Industrial Areas, European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, Green Deal, European Commission, contract 101036245). This study is also supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (42101470, 72242106) and in part by the Chunhui Project Foundation of the Education Department of China under Grant HZKY20220053. This study benefited from the Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure (ACTRIS), especially the so-called ACTRIS-2 H2020 research project (grant no 654109), and the authors would like to thank ACTRIS (The Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure), especially the ACTRIS in situ EBAS Data Centre (EBAS), for providing datasets to the study. This study is also partly funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Protection Research Unit in Environmental Exposures and Health, a partnership between UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and Imperial College London, and the UK Natural Environment Re-search Council, and the views expressed are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the NIHR, UKHSA or the Department of Health and Social Care. The research was also supported by the Hungarian Research, Development and Innovation Office (grant no. K132254). We thank also the support from "Agencia Estatal de Investigacion" from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, and FEDER funds under the projects CAIAC (PID2019-108990RB-I00); and the Generalitat de Catalunya (AGAUR 2017 SGR41) and the Direccio General de Territori. IMT Nord Europe and LOA acknowledge financial support from the Labex CaPPA project, funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR-11-LABX-0005-01), and the CLIMIBIO and ECRIN projects, both financed by the Regional Council "Hauts-de-France" and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). This study aims to picture the phenomenology of urban ambient total lung deposited surface area (LDSA) (including head/throat (HA), tracheobronchial (TB), and alveolar (ALV) regions) based on multiple path particle dosimetry (MPPD) model during 2017-2019 period collected from urban background (UB, n = 15), traffic (TR, n = 6), suburban background (SUB, n = 4), and regional background (RB, n = 1) monitoring sites in Europe (25) and USA (1). Briefly, the spatial-temporal distribution characteristics of the deposition of LDSA, including diel, weekly, and seasonal pat-terns, were analyzed. Then, the relationship between LDSA and other air quality metrics at each monitoring site was investigated. The result showed that the peak concentrations of LDSA at UB and TR sites are commonly observed in the morning (06:00-8:00 UTC) and late evening (19:00-22:00 UTC), coinciding with traffic rush hours, biomass burning, and atmospheric stagnation periods. The only LDSA night-time peaks are observed on weekends. Due to the variability of emission sources and meteorology, the seasonal variability of the LDSA concentration revealed sig-nificant differences (p = 0.01) between the four seasons at all monitoring sites. Meanwhile, the correlations of LDSA with other pollutant metrics suggested that Aitken and accumulation mode particles play a significant role in the total LDSA concentration. The results also indicated that the main proportion of total LDSA is attributed to the ALV fraction (50 %), followed by the TB (34 %) and HA (16 %). Overall, this study provides valuable information of LDSA as a predictor in epidemiological studies and for the first time presenting total LDSA in a variety of European urban environments. AbstractAlaska is located at the northernmost point of the interface between the Pacific plate and the North American continent. The subduction of the Pacific plate generates arc volcanoes along the Aleutian trench, which stops to the east at the Denali Volcanic Gap. This volcanic gap has been linked to the underthrusting of the Yakutat terrane, which might alter the thermal state of the mantle wedge and prevent melt formation. This implies that the limits of the volcanic activity should mirror the extent of the Yakutat subduction. However, the transition from the Pacific slab to the Yakutat terrane at depth is not fully understood. To investigate this issue, we processed a new composite seismic data set from six arrays deployed in the region from 2000 to 2018. We apply a multi‐mode 3D Kirchhoff migration to obtain high‐resolution 3D scattering images of the region. Our results highlight a sharp lateral boundary in the slab structure, with a 10 km Moho step, just offshore Anchorage, and a more gradual slab transition beneath the southern part of the Kenai peninsula. Our images from the Yakutat slab plunge down to 150 km depth are consistent with previous estimates of the Yakutat slab extent below the Alaska Range. Although the steeply dipping boundaries of the subducting Pacific lithospheres are not fully recovered, deep coherent signals from the Pacific slab are observed down to 150 km depth. These observations suggest that the crust is still partially uneclogitized at these depths in both slabs.

Reconciling top-down and bottom-up country-level greenhouse gas emission estimates remains a key challenge in the MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, Verification) paradigm. Here we propose to independently quantify cumulative emissions from a significant number of methane (CH 4) emitters at national level and derive robust constraints for the national inventory. Methane emissions in Cyprus, an insular country, stem primarily from waste and agricultural activities. We performed 24 intensive survey days of mobile measurements of CH 4 from October 2020 to September 2021 at emission 'hotspots' in Cyprus accounting together for about 28 % of national CH 4 emissions. The surveyed areas include a large active landfill (Koshi, 8 % of total emissions), a large closed landfill (Kotsiatis, 18 %), and a concentrated cattle farm area (Aradippou, 2 %). Emission rates for each site were estimated using repeated downwind transects and a Gaussian plume dispersion model. The calculated methane emissions from landfills of Koshi and Kotsiatis (25.9 ± 6.4 Gg yr − 1) and enteric fermentation of cattle (10.4 ± 4.4 Gg yr − 1) were about 129 % and 40 % larger, respectively than the bottom-up sectorial annual estimates used in the national UNFCCC inventory. The parametrization of the Gaussian plume model dominates the uncertainty in our method, with a typical 21 % uncertainty. Seasonal variations have little influence on the results. We show that using an ensemble of in situ measurements targeting representative methane emission hotspots with consistent temporal and spatial coverage can contribute to the monitoring and validation of national bottom-up emission inventories.
