Here we synthesize insights gained into overturning flows, interocean exchanges, and water mass distributions and pathways in the South Atlantic. The overturning circulation in the South Atlantic uniquely carries heat equatorward and exports freshwater poleward and consists of two strong overturning cells. Density and pressure gradients, winds, eddies, boundary currents, and interocean exchanges create an energetic circulation in the subtropical and tropical South Atlantic Ocean. The relative importance of these drivers varies with the observed latitude and time scale. AMOC, interocean exchanges, and climate changes drive ocean warming at all depths, upper ocean salinification, and freshening in the deep and abyssal ocean in the South Atlantic. Long-term sustained observations are critical to detect and understand these changes and their impacts.Chidichimo, M.P., Perez, R.C., Speich, S., Kersalé, M., Sprintall J., Dong, S.,Lamont, T., Sato, O., Chereskin T., Hummels, R., Schmid, C.: Energetic overturningflows, dynamic interocean exchanges, and ocean warming observed in the SouthAtlantic. Such improvement is mostly quantified via basic performance indicators, like wait or travel time. However, accessibility indicators, measuring the ease of reaching surrounding opportunities (e.g., jobs, schools, shops, ...), would be a more comprehensive indicator. To date, no method exists to quantify the accessibility of SMS based on empirical measurements. Indeed, accessibility is generally computed on graph representations of PT networks, but SMS are dynamic and do not follow a predefined network. We propose a spatial-temporal statistical method that takes as input observed trips of a SMS acting as a feeder for PT and summarized such trips in a graph. On such a graph, we compute classic accessibility indicators. We apply our method to a MATSim simulation study concerning DRT in Paris-Saclay.

Studies and experience have highlighted that users' range anxiety may be alleviated by intelligent technological solutions. In this work, a comprehensive investigation of several such solutions and their impact on overall trip time for long-distance journeys has been carried out. In particular, the impact of battery size, driving speed, energy consumption, as well as charging strategy (i.e., sequence of events and charging power) has been evaluated. The goal is to understand how to best influence driving operation (in terms of driving speed and charging strategy) for given physical design parameters (battery size, maximum charging power, etc.) and make long-distance trips feasible even with smaller battery capacities.

However, both these developments threaten to endanger power system stability, which may hinder their widespread adoption. Totackle these challenges, there is a need for joint modelling of electric vehicle traffic flows, together with their battery dynamics. We propose a macroscopic electromobility model, augmenting the LWR model, describing the traffic dynamics, with an inhomogeneous advection equation, describing the evolution of vehicles’ State of Charge (SoC). The Riemann problem for the joint model is solved for the case of triangular fundamental diagram, and the solutions are used to formulate a Godunov-like scheme for model discretization. Additionally, we propose an advection-based charging station model, discretize it, and link it with the rest of the traffic and SoC model. We demonstrate the capabilities and use of the full coupled model by proposing a pedagogic example where a simple control law regulates the average SoC of all vehicles on a ring road by controlling the traffic flow entering the charging station.

All this massive data comes from a pervasive smart camera network that constantly monitors activities in stations, trains, buses and other places of interest. In this work, we present the idea of this computer vision distributed subsystem , the state of the art of the techniques involved and the advanced functionalities that this intelligent surveillance system offers to the upper layers. Everything is developed following the privacy-by-design paradigm; namely, no real image is recorded or transmitted, but all the elaborations take place on the edge nodes of the system.

Effective data management plays a key role in oceanographic research as cruise-based data, collected from different laboratories and expeditions, are commonly compiled to investigate regional to global oceanographic processes. Here we describe new and updated best practice data standards for discrete chemical oceanographic observations, specifically those dealing with column header abbreviations, quality control flags, missing value indicators, and standardized calculation of certain properties. These data standards have been developed with the goals of improving the current practices of the scientific community and promoting their international usage. These guidelines are intended to standardize data files for data sharing and submission into permanent archives. They will facilitate future quality control and synthesis efforts and lead to better data interpretation. In turn, this will promote research in ocean biogeochemistry, such as studies of carbon cycling and ocean acidification, on regional to global scales. These best practice standards are not mandatory. Agencies, institutes, universities, or research vessels can continue using different data standards if it is important for them to maintain historical consistency. However, it is hoped that they will be adopted as widely as possible to facilitate consistency and to achieve the goals stated above. Funding for L-QJ and AK was from NOAA Ocean Acidification Program (OAP, Project ID: 21047) and NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) through NOAA grant NA19NES4320002 [Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS)] at the University of Maryland/ESSIC. This new way of configuring trucks changes the typical pressures pavements structures experience. For this reason, the research efforts of the pavement sector should be aligned with the automotive sector to propose road-friendly platoon configurations. This is one of the objectives of the European project ENSEMBLE. ENSEMBLE, as indicated by its acronym, works on ENabling SafE Multi-Brand pLatooning for Europe. In this context, the present study presents a real scale test done in the Applus IDIADA facilities to evaluate the fatigue behavior of a pavement structure subjected to individual and platoon truck configurations. The effects of parameters such as traffic distribution through the year and by time of day, percentage of platoons, truck loads, number of trucks in platoon configuration, lateral wandering, and inter-truck distances were evaluated. The study's findings revealed that the reduced rest times between trucks in the platoon configuration reduce the recovery time of the asphalt layers, increasing the fatigue damage to the pavement at high temperature conditions. This underlines the need for further research to allow the proper implementation of truck platoons. For example, research is needed to define strategies to make truck platoon configurations more pavementfriendly and analyze the costs associated with the changes in the required road maintenance/rehabilitation treatments, among others.

International audience; This paper aims at identifying the expectations of train drivers or other railway staff about Human-Machine Systems (HMS) in future cabins. The identification of the best technical solution needs surveying preferences and efficiencies of possible new information technology configurations of Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) considering human factors as input and output sensors. Technical recommendations about the train cabin of the future are provided. They consider results from a state-of-the-art on HMI in transport systems, from technology maturity issues, and from two large scale surveys realized during project. Recommendations are then proposed to train manufacturers for deeper investigation or for innovative driving cabin implementation.
