Federated learning has become a popular collaborative machine learning approach in which clients use their local data for training. This results in bandwidth savings since the training data does not have to be transferred to a central node, and also protects the privacy of these data. However, doing federated learning in tiny Internet of Things (IoT) devices is challenging due to the resource constraints of the devices and lack of experimental tools. In this paper, we develop a federated learning implementation that allows training of different machine learning models on embedded IoT devices. Our starting point is a library of neural network models which we have developed. We analyze the metadata to describe these models, design the interaction process between clients and server of a federated learning network, and implement the software. We validate the system by conducting experiments with our implementation deployed on real embedded boards. We observe in a non-IID experiment the capacity of federated learning to provide a trained model whose capacities go beyond those that the node could train by itself. Being heterogeneous data distribution a realistic scenario in distributed IoT devices, we believe that our implementation can be useful for the community as a tool to explore the training of neural networks on microcontrollers with the support of federated learning. This work has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 957258 — ASSIST-IoT, and was partially supported by the Spanish Government under contract PID2019-106774RB-C21, and the Generalitat de Catalunya as Consolidated Research Group 2021-SGR-01059. Buildings, as significant contributors to energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, require effective measures for energy optimization that can also be reached by predicting the usage of the building spaces. This paper introduces a data-driven approach combining Internet of Things sensors, Machine Learning, Edge computing, and Federated Learning to predict multi-occupancy in buildings. The proposed approach is used on real data from the ICAR-CNR IoT Laboratory in order to extract insights into occupancy patterns within a multi-occupant environment. Finally, a comparative analysis conducted by varying Federated Learning configurations demonstrates the robustness of the solution.

The agriculture and livestock sectors are facing several challenges with regard to achieving current EU environmental objectives (Greenhouse gas emissions reduction and nutrient loss). Farmers are continuously looking to adopt technologies and solutions that may ensure sustainable food production systems. Innovation adoption at the farm level based on a circular economy may improve resource efficiency, allow the reuse and recovery of nutrients, and reduce the negative effect of emissions on soil, water and air. However, there are different factors influencing adoption decisions with regard to sustainable agriculture technologies. Farmers’ adoption decisions, depends on different attributes related to the farm and agricultural producer, also attitudes and behaviors strongly influence their decision to adopt sustainableagricultural technologies Objectius de Desenvolupament Sostenible::12 - Producció i Consum Responsables Objectius de Desenvolupament Sostenible::13 - Acció per al Clima Pòster presentat al PhD Day at CBL el 2 de juny de 2023

Robotic cloth manipulation is an increasingly relevant area of research, challenging classic control algorithms due to the deformable nature of cloth. While it is possible to apply linear model predictive control to make the robot move the cloth according to a given reference, this approach suffers from a large dimensionality of the state-space representation of the cloth models. To address this issue, in this work we study the application of an input-output model predictive control strategy, based on quadratic dynamic matrix control, to robotic cloth manipulation. To account for uncertain disturbances on the cloth's motion, we further extend the algorithm with suitable chance constraints. In extensive simulated experiments, involving disturbances and obstacle avoidance, we show that quadratic dynamic matrix control can be successfully applied in different cloth manipulation scenarios, with significant gains in optimization speed compared to standard model predictive control strategies. The experiments further demonstrate that the closed-loop model used by quadratic dynamic matrix control can be beneficial to the tracking accuracy, leading to improvements over the standard predictive control strategy. Moreover, a preliminary experiment on a real robot shows that quadratic dynamic matrix control can indeed be employed in real settings. © 2023 IEEE. Personal use of this material is permitted. The development of humanoids with bimanual manipulator arms may facilitate assistive robots to perform physical therapy with older adults living at home. As we assume the human-human interaction to be the gold standard of physical therapy, we propose a kinematics analysis to derive guidelines for implementing physical therapy assisted by humanoids. Therefore, a pilot study was carried out involving three physical therapists and two participants acting as exemplary patients. The study analyzes the therapists' movement strategy, including the position and orientation of the therapists' bodies in relation to the participants and the placement of the therapists' hands on the upper limb segment of the participants, as well as the inter- and intravariability during the performance of a ROM (range of motion) assessment. The results demonstrate that while physical therapists exhibit variation in their interaction strategies, they still achieve a consistently low level of variability in their manipulation space.
