description Publication2021 CroatiaPublisher:Informa UK Limited Authors: Željka Tonković; Sven Marcelić; Krešimir Krolo;Željka Tonković; Sven Marcelić; Krešimir Krolo;Using data from a large survey (N = 2736) of high school students in six major cities of Adriatic Croatia, this paper examines the relationship between cultural consumption, values and parental cultural capital. In order to identify the main dimensions that structure the space of cultural practices and taste, multiple correspondence analysis was employed. We find that this space is primarily structured by a dimension differentiating between engagement and disengagement in contemporary global culture, while the second dimension describes a relation towards popular and traditional culture. By superimposing supplementary variables on this map, we show that both dimensions are strongly associated with parental cultural capital and students’ value orientations. Using hierarchical cluster analysis, five specific clusters of cultural consumers were identified: Folk Univors, Neo-Traditionalists, Eclectic Consumers, Modern Omnivores and Elite Alternatives. The obtained results point not only to the intergenerational transmission of taste, but also to new forms of distinction among Croatian youth.

Since the beheading of the French teacher Samuel Paty on 16 October 2020, the call for a fight against the so-called ‘Political Islam’ has been heard once again, not only in France, but all over Europe (EU). The politicization of Islam is held to be responsible for the increasing attacks by radical Islamic actors within European metropoles, and the EU states’ call for action and revenge in response to this ideology and its adherents, in order to guarantee public security and democratic values. Starting from the major terrorist attacks in France in the last few years, this paper seeks to compare the interlinking between domestic policy and religious radicalization and its impact on neighboring states. With regard to the attacks on 13 November 2015 in France, the attackers were traced back to radical networks in Belgium and Germany. Based on selected interviews that have been conducted by the author with female adherents of jihadist milieus within the years 2015 and 2016 in France and social media examples of Muslim reactions on the current French law enforcement, the tension between domestic policy and religious freedom related to Islam in France will be highlighted in this article. Among other reasons, the interview quotations and social media reactions can be seen as a result of a specific religious understanding and practice related to Islam by some actors. In addition, the ongoing othering of Muslims by France and other European societies can be seen to be in sum to be responsible for the increasing interest of young Muslims in radical Islamic thought that led to jihadist attacks within France in the not-so-distant past. With respect to the aforementioned development, this article will conceptualize the problematique of a (politically motivated) category formation related to one religion that is currently practiced in France, as seen from the perspective of a religious studies scholar.

Overview of Literature: The concept of neuromuscular scoliosis includes a wide variety of pathologies affecting the neuromuscular system. Complications are numerous and are often difficult to predict. Methods: A retrospective analysis of a single-center database was conducted from 2013 to 2017. Inclusion criteria were patients aged <25 years, diagnosis of neuromuscular scoliosis, and history of posterior fusion deformity surgery. A total of 64 patients (mean age, 15 years; 63% females) were included in this study. Clinical, radiological, and laboratory parameters in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative settings were analyzed. Univariate analysis was performed using Student t -test for continuous variables, and a chi-square test was used for noncontinuous variables. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify predictors of major, mechanical, and total complications. Results: Complications were found in 44% of patients, with 46.9% consisting of major complications, and 84.4% being early complications. Univariate analysis revealed that the presence of perinatal comorbidities, independent of other comorbidities, increased the risk for complications (p =0.029). Preoperative hypoglycemia, high number of instrumented levels, longer surgical time, use of an all-screw construct, lower preoperative pelvic obliquity, postoperative lower kyphosis, high thoracic spinopelvic angle (as measured by T9 spino-pelvic inclination), absence of deep drain, and use of superficial drain were associated with postoperative complications (all p <0.05). Logistic regression demonstrated that comorbidities, longer surgical time, hypoglycemia, and absence of deep drains are predictors of complications. Independent variables that predicted major complications were the number of levels fused, postoperative kyphosis (p =0.025; odds ratio [OR], 1.074), and high screw density (p =0.014; OR, 4.380).Conclusions: Complications in neuromuscular scoliosis are increased by comorbidities, long surgical time, and inadequate correction. Preventative measures to decrease these complications include appropriate preoperative patient preparation and surgical planning.

Therefore, it is obvious that there is a need to examine the constructs of new thinking, new ways of life, and new behavior, which will help people not only to overcome the pandemic but also to build a future after it. The words isolation, quarantine, social distancing, lockdown, masks, antibodies, and zoom meeting quickly became the keywords of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this article, which is based on an analysis of the scientific literature and interviews, we ask whether new behavioral patterns such as social distancing, mask-wearing, online communication, and others might become the “new normal”. However, what might be perceived as the “new normal” to some, may seem like social absurdity to others. Thus, with an open-minded approach, we analyze the “new normal” as a complex, controversial, and evolving concept.

A successful career in the state service would be impossible by just having some connections. A great example of this theory is Juozapatas Mykolas Karpis (1679–1739), who in the beginning of the career was able to enter the circle of the Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Karolis Stanislovas Radvila (1669–1719). Seemingly, K. S. Radvila and his circle had a big influence on the further career of J. M. Karpis. This assumption is based on a source found in the Sėla Museum of Biržai. This source is comprised of the letters from various people written to J. M. Karpis in 1720–1722, when he worked in the episcopate of Vilnius. Some letters are from the years prior to that. It is a new source for historiography, and the letters enrich the research on J. M. Karpis with new information. They reveal his work and, most importantly, the environment in which he acted. Many of the names were not mentioned in the research on J. M. Karpis earlier. So, the main aim is to identify the connections forged in the circle of the Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and their influence to J. M. Karpis’ career. Next in this research, after a short presentation of the direct influence of K. S. Radvila to J. M. Karpis’ career, the environment is explored in which J. M. Karpis was most active and a few important figures that helped him to reach higher positions are identified. It is important to mention that in this article we analyse two separate periods of J. M. Karpis’ life to show the lasting links between those two episodes. Hereby, the method of prosopography comes handy. It helps to find connections between J. M. Karpis, his patron K. S. Radvila and the people mentioned in the letters. This kind of analysis allows for the separation of the most important individuals in his circle and tracking the impact of K. S. Radvila to J. M. Karpis’ career. Keywords: the Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Karolis Stanislovas Radvila; Juozapatas Mykolas Karpis; the Bishop of Vilnius Konstanty Kazimierz Brzostowski; clients of the Radvilas, secretary of the Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania; Vilnius Diocese; the Bishop of Samogitia.

Verronen; J. M. Wissing; O. S. Yakovchuk;Precipitating auroral and radiation belt electrons are considered to play an important part in the natural forcing of the middle atmosphere with a possible impact on the climate system. Recent studies suggest that this forcing is underestimated in current chemistry‐climate models. The HEPPA III intercomparison experiment is a collective effort to address this point. In this study, we apply electron ionization rates from three data‐sets in four chemistry‐climate models during a geomagnetically active period in April 2010. Results are evaluated by comparison with observations of nitric oxide (NO) in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. Differences between the ionization rate data‐sets have been assessed in a companion study. In the lower thermosphere, NO densities differ by up to one order of magnitude between models using the same ionization rate data‐sets due to differences in the treatment of NO formation, model climatology, and model top height. However, a good agreement in the spatial and temporal variability of NO with observations lends confidence that the electron ionization is represented well above 80 km. In the mesosphere, the averages of model results from all chemistry‐climate models differ consistently with the differences in the ionization‐rate data‐sets, but are within the spread of the observations, so no clear assessment on their comparative validity can be provided. However, observed enhanced amounts of NO in the mid‐mesosphere below 70 km suggest a relevant contribution of the high‐energy tail of the electron distribution to the hemispheric NO budget during and after the geomagnetic storm on April 6. Key Points: Differences between multi‐model mean results at high latitudes are consistent with differences in the ionization rate data‐sets used. Electron precipitation above 80 km is well reproduced for all ionization rate data‐sets despite large differences between individual CCMs. Anisotropic precipitation from ≥300 keV electrons could provide up to 0.05–0.15 Gmol NO per hemisphere in storm main and recovery phase. Traffic has a direct impact on local and regional economies, on pollution levels and is also a major source of discomfort and frustration for the public who have to deal with congestion, accidents or detours due to road works or accidents. Congestion in urban areas is a common phenomenon nowadays, as the main arteries of cities become congested during peak hours or when there are additional constraints such as traffic accidents and road works that slow down traffic on road sections. When traffic increases, it is observed that some roads are predisposed to congestion, while others are not. It is evident that both congestion and urban traffic itself are influenced by several factors represented by complex geospatial data and the spatial relationships between them. In this paper were integrated mathematical models, real time traffic data with network analysis and simulation procedures in order to analyze the public transportation in Oradea and the impact on urban traffic. A mathematical model was also adapted to simulate the travel choices of the population of the city and of the surrounding villages. Based on the network analysis, traffic analysis and on the traveling simulation, the elements generating traffic congestion in the inner city can be easily determined. The results of the case study are emphasizing that diminishing the traffic and its effects can be obtained by improving either the public transport density or its accessibility.

description Publication2021 CroatiaPublisher:Informa UK Limited Authors: Željka Tonković; Sven Marcelić; Krešimir Krolo;Željka Tonković; Sven Marcelić; Krešimir Krolo;Using data from a large survey (N = 2736) of high school students in six major cities of Adriatic Croatia, this paper examines the relationship between cultural consumption, values and parental cultural capital.
