International audience; Foraging behaviour is crucial to the breeding success for marine predators, including seabirds. Yellow eyed penguins (Megadyptes antipodes) are central-place predominantly benthic foragers around mainland New Zealand. The mainland population of this iconic species is declining, with changes in the marine environment a suspected cause, in particular, warming water and poorer foraging success. Here, we undertook a detailed foraging study of the ancestral subantarctic population which is genetically separate from the northern population. Over two breeding seasons, we collected GPS logs from 94 deployments on 75 breeding yellow 1 -eyed penguins foraging from Enderby Island, AucklandIslands, New Zealand. Birds foraged up to 47 km from shore, more than twice as far as yellow-eyed penguins in many areas around mainland New Zealand. Foraging area size and maximum range (distance from shore) were larger in a year of greater breeding effort (2016), and also for females, and birds undertaking pelagic foraging trips. Differences in foraging behaviour are likely influenced by local bathymetry, environmental conditions, and individual preference. Despite comparable bathymetry in some areas, the southern population shows greater foraging plasticity than seen in the northern population, implying foraging conditions may be less restricted in the subantarctic. However, previous studies have shown breeding success at the Auckland Islands is inconsistent, and differing foraging behaviour between years indicates foraging conditions are likely variable. Prey availability and foraging success are also expected to be affected by warming water, with implications for future breeding success particularly from the effects of climate change and El Niño Southern Oscillations (ENSO).

By considering suitable parameter spaces for $m$-periodic sets, we can locally rigorously analyze the energy of point sets, within the family of periodic sets having the same point density. We derive a characterization of periodic point sets being $f_c$-critical for all $c$ in terms of weighted spherical $2$-designs contained in the set. Especially for $2$-periodic sets like the family $\mathsf{D}^+_n$ we obtain expressions for the hessian of the energy function, allowing to certify $f_c$-optimality in certain cases. For odd integers $n\geq 9$ we can hereby in particular show that $\mathsf{D}^+_n$ is locally $f_c$-optimal among periodic sets for all sufficiently large~$c$. 27 pages, 2 figures

Event extraction is an information extraction task that focuses on identifying event mentions from textual data. In the context of event-based health surveillance from digitized documents, several key issues remain challenging in spite of great efforts. First, image documents are indexed through their digitized version and thus, they may contain numerous errors, e.g. misspellings. Second, it is important to address international news, which would imply the inclusion of multilingual data. To clarify these important aspects of how to extract epidemic-related events, it remains necessary to maximize the use of digitized data. In this paper, we investigate the impact of working with digitized multilingual documents with dierent levels of synthetic noise over the performance of an event extraction system. This type of analysis, to our knowledge, has not been alleviated in previous research.

The Thiele/Small (TS) model provides a low frequency approximation, combining passive linear (multiphysical or electric-equivalent) components. This is commonly used by manufacturers as a reference to specify basic parameters and characteristic transfer functions. This paper presents more refined nonlinear models of electric, magnetic and mechanical phenomena, for which fundamental properties such as passivity and causality are guaranteed. More precisely, multiphysical models of the driver are formulated in the core class of port-Hamiltonian systems (PHS), which satisfies a power balance decomposed into conservative, dissipative and source parts. First, the TS model is reformulated as a linear PHS. Then, refinements are introduced, stepby-step, benefiting from the component-based approach allowed by the PHS formalism. Guaranteed-passive simulations are proposed, based on a numerical scheme that preserves the power balance. Numerical experiments that qualitatively comply with measured behaviors available in the literature are presented throughout the paper.

The approach is a follows. First, we derive a monolithic description of the fluid/structure interaction by extending the Navier-Stokes equations from the fluid domain to the solid (rotor) domain similarly to the fictitious-domain approach. Second, we build a ROM by a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of the resulting multi-phases flow. This method consists in (i) constructing an optimal albeit empirical spatial basis for a very small sub-space of the solution space, and (ii) projecting the governing equations on this reduced basis. Third, we cope with the reconstruction of the high-dimensional velocity field needed to evaluate the imposed velocity constraint by a POD of the solid membership function. Fourth, we use state of the art method to interpolate between available POD bases to build the proposed POD-ROM for a range of parameters values. The proposed method is applied to an academic configuration and proves efficient in the reconstruction of the velocity in both the fluid and solid domains while substantially reducing the computational cost.

Tracking spatio-temporal changes in inundation patterns of these wetlands remains a challenge for remote sensing. Water In Wetlands (WIW) was predicted using a dichotomous partitioning of reflectance values encoded based on ground-truth (n = 4038) and optical-space derived (n = 7016) data covering all land cover types (n = 17) found in the Rhône delta, southern France. The models were developed with spectral data from Sentinel 2, Landsat 7, and Landsat 8 sensors, hence providing a monitoring tool that covers a 35-year period (same sensor for Landsat 5 and 7). A single model combining the near infrared (NIR ≤ 0.1558 to 0.1804, depending on sensors) and short-wave infrared (SWIR2 ≤ 0.0871 to 0.1131) wavelengths was identified by three independent analyses, each one using a different satellite. Overall accuracy of water maps ranged from 89% to 94% for the training samples and from 90% to 94% for the validation samples, encompassing standard water indices that systematically underestimate flooding duration under vegetation cover. Sentinel 2 provided the highest performance with a kappa coefficient of 0.82 for both samples. Such tool will be most useful for monitoring the water dynamics of seasonal wetlands, which are particularly sensitive to climate change while providing multiple services to humankind. Considering the high temporal resolution of Sentinel 2 (every 5 days), cumulative water maps built with the WIW logical rule could further be used for mapping a wide range of wetlands which are either periodically or permanently flooded.

International audience; Foraging behaviour is crucial to the breeding success for marine predators, including seabirds. Yellow eyed penguins (Megadyptes antipodes) are central-place predominantly benthic foragers around mainland New Zealand. The mainland population of this iconic species is declining, with changes in the marine environment a suspected cause, in particular, warming water and poorer foraging success. Here, we undertook a detailed foraging study of the ancestral subantarctic population which is genetically separate from the northern population. Over two breeding seasons, we collected GPS logs from 94 deployments on 75 breeding yellow 1 -eyed penguins foraging from Enderby Island, AucklandIslands, New Zealand. Birds foraged up to 47 km from shore, more than twice as far as yellow-eyed penguins in many areas around mainland New Zealand. Foraging area size and maximum range (distance from shore) were larger in a year of greater breeding effort (2016), and also for females, and birds undertaking pelagic foraging trips. Differences in foraging behaviour are likely influenced by local bathymetry, environmental conditions, and individual preference. Despite comparable bathymetry in some areas, the southern population shows greater foraging plasticity than seen in the northern population, implying foraging conditions may be less restricted in the subantarctic. However, previous studies have shown breeding success at the Auckland Islands is inconsistent, and differing foraging behaviour between years indicates foraging conditions are likely variable. Prey availability and foraging success are also expected to be affected by warming water, with implications for future breeding success particularly from the effects of climate change and El Niño Southern Oscillations (ENSO).

By considering suitable parameter spaces for $m$-periodic sets, we can locally rigorously analyze the energy of point sets, within the family of periodic sets having the same point density. We derive a characterization of periodic point sets being $f_c$-critical for all $c$ in terms of weighted spherical $2$-designs contained in the set. Especially for $2$-periodic sets like the family $\mathsf{D}^+_n$ we obtain expressions for the hessian of the energy function, allowing to certify $f_c$-optimality in certain cases. For odd integers $n\geq 9$ we can hereby in particular show that $\mathsf{D}^+_n$ is locally $f_c$-optimal among periodic sets for all sufficiently large~$c$. 27 pages, 2 figures

Event extraction is an information extraction task that focuses on identifying event mentions from textual data. In the context of event-based health surveillance from digitized documents, several key issues remain challenging in spite of great efforts. First, image documents are indexed through their digitized version and thus, they may contain numerous errors, e.g. misspellings. Second, it is important to address international news, which would imply the inclusion of multilingual data. To clarify these important aspects of how to extract epidemic-related events, it remains necessary to maximize the use of digitized data. In this paper, we investigate the impact of working with digitized multilingual documents with dierent levels of synthetic noise over the performance of an event extraction system. This type of analysis, to our knowledge, has not been alleviated in previous research.

The Thiele/Small (TS) model provides a low frequency approximation, combining passive linear (multiphysical or electric-equivalent) components. This is commonly used by manufacturers as a reference to specify basic parameters and characteristic transfer functions. This paper presents more refined nonlinear models of electric, magnetic and mechanical phenomena, for which fundamental properties such as passivity and causality are guaranteed. More precisely, multiphysical models of the driver are formulated in the core class of port-Hamiltonian systems (PHS), which satisfies a power balance decomposed into conservative, dissipative and source parts. First, the TS model is reformulated as a linear PHS. Then, refinements are introduced, stepby-step, benefiting from the component-based approach allowed by the PHS formalism. Guaranteed-passive simulations are proposed, based on a numerical scheme that preserves the power balance. Numerical experiments that qualitatively comply with measured behaviors available in the literature are presented throughout the paper.

The approach is a follows. First, we derive a monolithic description of the fluid/structure interaction by extending the Navier-Stokes equations from the fluid domain to the solid (rotor) domain similarly to the fictitious-domain approach. Second, we build a ROM by a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of the resulting multi-phases flow. This method consists in (i) constructing an optimal albeit empirical spatial basis for a very small sub-space of the solution space, and (ii) projecting the governing equations on this reduced basis. Third, we cope with the reconstruction of the high-dimensional velocity field needed to evaluate the imposed velocity constraint by a POD of the solid membership function. Fourth, we use state of the art method to interpolate between available POD bases to build the proposed POD-ROM for a range of parameters values. The proposed method is applied to an academic configuration and proves efficient in the reconstruction of the velocity in both the fluid and solid domains while substantially reducing the computational cost.

Tracking spatio-temporal changes in inundation patterns of these wetlands remains a challenge for remote sensing. Water In Wetlands (WIW) was predicted using a dichotomous partitioning of reflectance values encoded based on ground-truth (n = 4038) and optical-space derived (n = 7016) data covering all land cover types (n = 17) found in the Rhône delta, southern France. The models were developed with spectral data from Sentinel 2, Landsat 7, and Landsat 8 sensors, hence providing a monitoring tool that covers a 35-year period (same sensor for Landsat 5 and 7). A single model combining the near infrared (NIR ≤ 0.1558 to 0.1804, depending on sensors) and short-wave infrared (SWIR2 ≤ 0.0871 to 0.1131) wavelengths was identified by three independent analyses, each one using a different satellite. Overall accuracy of water maps ranged from 89% to 94% for the training samples and from 90% to 94% for the validation samples, encompassing standard water indices that systematically underestimate flooding duration under vegetation cover. Sentinel 2 provided the highest performance with a kappa coefficient of 0.82 for both samples. Such tool will be most useful for monitoring the water dynamics of seasonal wetlands, which are particularly sensitive to climate change while providing multiple services to humankind. Considering the high temporal resolution of Sentinel 2 (every 5 days), cumulative water maps built with the WIW logical rule could further be used for mapping a wide range of wetlands which are either periodically or permanently flooded.
