    Authors: Frey Rébeillé-Borgella, Marie;

    The paper focuses on how the Latin liturgical prayers dealt with the different Latin biblical translations, Old Latin and Jerome’s translations and revisions, from the 5th up to the 12th century. Many studies on the spreading of Jerome’s translations have focused on Latin Bible manuscripts or fragments, the Latin Fathers’ quotations of the Bible, and the Latin lectionaries’ quotations of the Bible. The present study chooses to survey the liturgical books of prayers, specifically the Twelve Prophets’ translations; while the corpus is not a big one, it offers noteworthy results. First presented are quotations or mentions of a Latin verse where translation is identical in the Vetus Latina and the Vulgate. Then cases where Vulgate is used and cases where Old Latin is used are analyzed. It is not always easy to identify the translation used in the liturgical book, and one can sometimes only compare different assumptions on biblical-inspired liturgical texts to know whether its source is Old Latin or Vulgate. Moreover, translations of an Old Testament verse and a New Testament one are sometimes interfering. This happens mainly when the New Testament verse, while quoting the Old Testament one, retains the Old Latin translation, even in the Vulgate version. Samples of verses whose Old Latin survived Jerome’s translation are provided. The paper shows how one liturgical book can draw on both Old Latin and Vulgate, even within the same item, and stresses the need for a detailed analysis, liturgical book by liturgical book, to study the quotations from the Bible in the Latin liturgy. How was missionary knowledge received and interpreted by scholars and church historians in Europe and Russia? Many late nineteenth and early twentieth-century academics utilised knowledge production from Christian missions, notably by way of scholarly Orientalism. However, the history of this knowledge is also a history of representations: while missionary knowledge helped showcase the cultural and religious traditions of Eastern Christianity, what were the underlying motives and especially the consequences? This article examines the formulation and circulation of Eastern Christian knowledge on either side of the Mediterranean, especially on the basis of Catholic missionary archives and academic productions, the study of which is sometimes rooted in non-Anglophone academic traditions. The aim is to shed light on how knowledge relating to Eastern Christianity was assimilated in Europe, as well as the role missions played in this process, especially from the last third of the nineteenth century, when the institutions and instruments for the circulation of knowledge emerged. Another objective is to address the circulations and transformations of this knowledge on either side of the Mediterranean: collected and developed in major European libraries and universities, it was integrated by the governance structures of churches, but quite often also returned to the space it originated from, where it was reappropriated and gave rise to patrimonial processes, notably alongside the sometimes tragic experiences of certain communities during the end of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of new states. Christian missions, at the intersection of East and West, were at the heart of this dynamic . International audience

    Abstract. We present the content and scripting of an active tectonic lab session conceived for third-year undergraduate students studying Earth sciences at Observatoire des Sciences de l'Univers in Lyon. This session is based on a research project conducted on the submarine Roseau active fault in the Lesser Antilles. The fault morphology is particularly interesting to map as this structure in the deep ocean is preserved from weathering. Thus, high-resolution models computed from remotely operated vehicle (ROV) videos provide exceptional educational material to link fault morphology and coseismic displacement. This class includes mapping exercises on geographical information systems and virtual fieldwork to provide basic understanding of active tectonics and active fault morphology in particular. The work has been conducted either in a full remote configuration via 3D online models or in virtual reality (VR) in a dedicated room using the Minerve software. During the VR sessions, students were either alone in the VR environment or participated as a group that included the instructor (physically in the classroom or remotely from another location), which is to our knowledge one of the first attempts of this kind in France. We discuss the efficiency of virtual fieldwork using VR based on feedback from teachers and students. We conclude that VR is a promising tool to learn observational skills in Earth sciences, subject to certain improvements that should be possible in the years to come.

    International audience; This article analyses the famous cases of Nero and Sporus in an attempt to identify how these two men who experience the female body lived their gendered experiences in their bodies and in their imagination and how imperial and then alto-medieval societies represented them. This article highlights the epistemological difficulties that historians encounter when they try to approach ancient societies using terms and concepts unknown to these societies.; En analysant les célèbres cas de Néron et de Sporus, cet article veut essayer de cerner comment ces deux hommes qui expérimentent le corps de la femme ont vécu leurs expériences genrées dans leur corps et dans leur imaginaire et comment les sociétés impériale puis alto-médiévale se sont représentées celles-ci. Cet article souligne les difficultés épistémologiques que rencontre l’historien lorsqu’il veut aborder les sociétés antiques en usant de termes et de concepts qui leur sont inconnus.

    Authors: Joly, Hervé;

    L’industrie des textiles artificiels a employé pendant près d’un siècle jusqu’à plusieurs dizaines de milliers de personnes en France. La fabrication repose sur des fibres artificiellement produites à partir d’un traitement chimique de matières naturelles comme le coton ou la cellulose de bois. On a parlé de « soie artificielle » avant que la dénomination ne soit interdite par une loi de 1934 et remplacée par celle de « rayonne ». Après avoir retracé la multiplication spectaculaire des implantations, parfois rendues éphémères par la Grande Crise, de cette industrie en France dans les décennies 1900-1920, cet article étudie le recrutement largement féminin et migrant de la main-d’œuvre dans l’entre-deux-guerres à travers la population des cités ouvrières de deux usines. Les dures conditions sanitaires de travail dans ces entreprises sont notamment à l’origine de plusieurs mouvements de grèves importants, même si la conflictualité apparaît plutôt moins forte que dans l’ensemble de l’industrie textile. The artificial textile industry employed during almost one century up to several tens of thousands of workers in France. The production relies on artificial fibres produced through a chemical treatment of natural substances like cotton or wood cellulose. There was talk of “artificial silk” until the prohibition of this designation by a 1934 law and its replacement by the term “rayon”. After tracing the dramatic increase of production sites in France during the 1900’s-1920’s, sometimes ephemeral ones because of the Great Depression, this paper studies the largely feminine and migrant recruitment of the working force between the two wars through the population of working-class cities from two factories. The hard sanitary working conditions in those firms are notably at the origin of several important strikes, even if the level conflict appears to be rather weaker than in the whole textile industry. Dans un contexte de réorganisations politico-administratives, Pôle emploi a été créé en 2008 par la fusion des Assedic et de l’ANPE, respectivement chargées de l’indemnisation des chômeurs et de leur placement. Fondé sur deux enquêtes ethnographiques, cet article analyse les enjeux de la mise en œuvre d’une telle réorganisation, par-delà les mots d’ordre réformateurs initiaux. Il montre comment la fusion reconfigure les groupes professionnels, du double point du vue des pratiques de travail et des rapports hiérarchiques associés. La fusion complexifie le travail des agents de terrain, qui doivent assumer l’orientation coercitive de la réforme. Mais, certains groupes de cadres y voient une opportunité professionnelle : en promouvant leur conception managériale de la rationalisation bureaucratique, ils reconquièrent des marges de pouvoir institutionnel. Cette étude propose d’observer d’un point de vue genré l’un des univers ouvriers les plus emblématiques du XIX e siècle : la Fabrique lyonnaise des tissus en soie. L’organisation de l’industrie de la soie à Lyon permet d’étudier, d’une part, la division genrée du travail dans une multitude de métiers très spécialisés et, d’autre part, les hommes et les femmes au travail dans le même espace et effectuant des tâches semblables. Cette mixité professionnelle, peu fréquente dans bien des espaces de travail au milieu du XIX e siècle, est au cœur de ce travail. L’article dessine, tout d’abord, les contours de cet univers mixte dans un moment charnière de la transformation de la Fabrique lyonnaise, et de son expansion vers les pentes et le plateau de la Croix-Rousse. Il aborde ensuite une question peu étudiée dans la vaste historiographie qui s’est intéressée aux « canuts » : la diversité et l’hétérogénéité du groupe des chefs d’atelier. Pour cerner quelques traits marquants de cette diversité, il s’approche enfin de l’atelier familial en prenant le mariage comme moment fondateur de l’atelier et de resserrement des liens professionnels indispensables pour son fonctionnement.

    Authors: Dubrion, Benjamin;

    Si John R. Commons est souvent vu comme un économiste progressiste s'étant interrogé tout au long de sa carrière sur les voies d'émancipation de l'espèce humaine, il a parfois adopté des positionnements très ambigus sur l'unité de celle-ci, en particulier dans ses écrits sur la question raciale. L'objectif de cet article est de montrer en quoi Commons appara\ⁱt aujourd'hui comme un auteur raciste dans ses travaux sur l'immigration, ayant participé au développement du racisme scientifique au tournant du xxe siècle aux Etats-Unis. Ce travail permet d'une part d'enrichir les travaux francophones sur Commons, silencieux sur cette question, tout en alimentant des débats en histoire de la pensée économique sur le caractère raciste de l'auteur.     Authors: Frey Rébeillé-Borgella, Marie;

    Authors: Joly, Hervé;

    L’industrie des textiles artificiels a employé pendant près d’un siècle jusqu’à plusieurs dizaines de milliers de personnes en France. La fabrication repose sur des fibres artificiellement produites à partir d’un traitement chimique de matières naturelles comme le coton ou la cellulose de bois. On a parlé de « soie artificielle » avant que la dénomination ne soit interdite par une loi de 1934 et remplacée par celle de « rayonne ». Après avoir retracé la multiplication spectaculaire des implantations, parfois rendues éphémères par la Grande Crise, de cette industrie en France dans les décennies 1900-1920, cet article étudie le recrutement largement féminin et migrant de la main-d’œuvre dans l’entre-deux-guerres à travers la population des cités ouvrières de deux usines. Les dures conditions sanitaires de travail dans ces entreprises sont notamment à l’origine de plusieurs mouvements de grèves importants, même si la conflictualité apparaît plutôt moins forte que dans l’ensemble de l’industrie textile. The artificial textile industry employed during almost one century up to several tens of thousands of workers in France. The production relies on artificial fibres produced through a chemical treatment of natural substances like cotton or wood cellulose. There was talk of “artificial silk” until the prohibition of this designation by a 1934 law and its replacement by the term “rayon”. After tracing the dramatic increase of production sites in France during the 1900’s-1920’s, sometimes ephemeral ones because of the Great Depression, this paper studies the largely feminine and migrant recruitment of the working force between the two wars through the population of working-class cities from two factories. The hard sanitary working conditions in those firms are notably at the origin of several important strikes, even if the level conflict appears to be rather weaker than in the whole textile industry. Dans un contexte de réorganisations politico-administratives, Pôle emploi a été créé en 2008 par la fusion des Assedic et de l’ANPE, respectivement chargées de l’indemnisation des chômeurs et de leur placement. Fondé sur deux enquêtes ethnographiques, cet article analyse les enjeux de la mise en œuvre d’une telle réorganisation, par-delà les mots d’ordre réformateurs initiaux. Il montre comment la fusion reconfigure les groupes professionnels, du double point du vue des pratiques de travail et des rapports hiérarchiques associés. La fusion complexifie le travail des agents de terrain, qui doivent assumer l’orientation coercitive de la réforme. Mais, certains groupes de cadres y voient une opportunité professionnelle : en promouvant leur conception managériale de la rationalisation bureaucratique, ils reconquièrent des marges de pouvoir institutionnel. Cette étude propose d’observer d’un point de vue genré l’un des univers ouvriers les plus emblématiques du XIX e siècle : la Fabrique lyonnaise des tissus en soie. L’organisation de l’industrie de la soie à Lyon permet d’étudier, d’une part, la division genrée du travail dans une multitude de métiers très spécialisés et, d’autre part, les hommes et les femmes au travail dans le même espace et effectuant des tâches semblables. Cette mixité professionnelle, peu fréquente dans bien des espaces de travail au milieu du XIX e siècle, est au cœur de ce travail. L’article dessine, tout d’abord, les contours de cet univers mixte dans un moment charnière de la transformation de la Fabrique lyonnaise, et de son expansion vers les pentes et le plateau de la Croix-Rousse. Il aborde ensuite une question peu étudiée dans la vaste historiographie qui s’est intéressée aux « canuts » : la diversité et l’hétérogénéité du groupe des chefs d’atelier. Pour cerner quelques traits marquants de cette diversité, il s’approche enfin de l’atelier familial en prenant le mariage comme moment fondateur de l’atelier et de resserrement des liens professionnels indispensables pour son fonctionnement.

    Si John R. Commons est souvent vu comme un économiste progressiste s'étant interrogé tout au long de sa carrière sur les voies d'émancipation de l'espèce humaine, il a parfois adopté des positionnements très ambigus sur l'unité de celle-ci, en particulier dans ses écrits sur la question raciale. L'objectif de cet article est de montrer en quoi Commons appara\ⁱt aujourd'hui comme un auteur raciste dans ses travaux sur l'immigration, ayant participé au développement du racisme scientifique au tournant du xxe siècle aux Etats-Unis. Ce travail permet d'une part d'enrichir les travaux francophones sur Commons, silencieux sur cette question, tout en alimentant des débats en histoire de la pensée économique sur le caractère raciste de l'auteur.
