However, major impediments to large-scale application still arise on the materials side. Here, we review catalytic combustion on thin film catalysts in view of highlighting some interesting features. Catalytic films open the way for new designs of structured catalysts and the construction of catalysts for catalytic combustion. A special place is occupied by materials in the form of very thin films that reveal catalytic activity for various chemical reactions. In this review, we demonstrate the high catalytic activity of thin film catalysts in these oxidation reactions.

Assuming the plant dynamics is homogeneous, we first derive a scaling property of its solutions along rays provided the sequence of inputs is suitably modified. We then consider homogeneous cost functions and reveal how the optimal value function scales along rays. This result can be used to construct (near-)optimal inputs on the whole state space by only solving the original problem on a given compact manifold of a smaller dimension. Compared to the related works of the literature, we impose no conditions on the homogeneity degrees. We demonstrate the strength of this new result by presenting a new approximate scheme for value iteration, which is one of the pillars of dynamic programming. The new algorithm provides guaranteed lower and upper estimates of the true value function at any iteration and has several appealing features in terms of reduced computation. A numerical case study is provided to illustrate the proposed algorithm. Long version (with proofs) of CDC 2021 paper

Abstract An essential step in the safe design of systems is choosing the system configuration that will maximize the overall availability of the system and minimize its overall cost. The main objective of this paper is to propose an optimization method of multistate system availability in the presence of both aleatory and epistemic uncertainties, to choose the best configuration for the system in terms of availability, cost, and imprecision. The problem is formulated as follows: let us consider several configurations of a system, with each configuration consisting of components with different working states, and imprecise failure and repair rates provided in the form of intervals. The aim is to find the best configuration regarding the system's imprecise availability, cost, and imprecision. First, the imprecise steady availability of each configuration is computed by using an original method based on Markovian approaches combined with interval contraction techniques. Then an objective function incorporating cost, the lower and upper bounds of availability, and imprecision is defined and computed to provide the best configuration. To illustrate the proposed method, a use case is discussed.

International audience; The industrial hazardous waste (IHW) generation to meet consumption is steadily increasing, resulting in environmental, health, and social problems around the world. To address IHW at the source, it is critical to understand the generation characteristics and key drivers on industrial hazardous waste generation (IHWG). This study analysed the generation characteristics of IHW of South Korea from 2008 to 2018 by decoupling and index decomposition analysis using Log Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) model. South Korea presented unstable decoupling of IHWG from economic growth, so more effective waste management regulations are needed to support a stable decoupling. One most critical finding was that the factors of industrial output and industrial characteristic of IHWG-to-energy were major driving factors influencing the increase of IHWG, whereas those of industrial structure and energy efficiency affect to the decrease of IHWG in most industries. In addition, the result clearly confirmed that the contribution of driving factors affecting the IHWG differs by industry. These results provide significant policy insights that the South Korean government needs institutional improvement and refinement of customised IHW management according to the characteristics of IHWG.

Albeit luminescence enhancement factors of several orders of magnitude have been reported for quantum dots or molecules, in the case of bulk emitters the magnitude of the plasmonic enhancement is strongly hindered by the weak spatial overlap between the active medium and the electromagnetic modes of the nanoantenna. Here, we propose a solid-state ultraviolet emitter based on a thin film of zinc oxide (ZnO) coupled with an array of aluminum (Al) nanoparticles. The Al nanorod array is designed to sustain surface lattice resonances (SLRs) in the near ultraviolet, which are hybrid modes exhibiting a Fano-like lineshape with narrowed linewidth relatively to the non-hybridized plasmonic modes. By changing both the period of the array and the dimensions of the nanorods, the generated SLR is tuned either to the near band-edge (NBE) emission of ZnO or to the excitation wavelength. We experimentally demonstrate that NBE emission can be increased up to a factor of 3 compared to bare ZnO. The underlying PL enhancement mechanisms are experimentally investigated and compared with numerical simulations. We also demonstrate that SLRs are more efficient for the ZnO luminescence enhancement compared to localized surface plasmon resonances. 8 pages, 8 figures. Electricity production is a major problem for deep space exploration. The possibility of using radioisotope elements with a very long life as an energy source was investigated in the framework of an EU project “SpaceTRIPS”. For this, a two-stage system was tested, the first in which thermal energy is converted into mechanical energy by means of a thermoacoustic process, and the second where mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy by means of a magnetohydrodynamic generator (MHD). The aim of the present study is to develop an analytical model of the MHD generator. A one-dimensional model is developed and presented that allows us to evaluate the behavior of the device as regards both electromagnetic and fluid-dynamic aspects, and consequently to determine the characteristic values of efficiency and power.

Altamirano; Nabila Arfaoui; Camilo Benitez-Avila; Thomas Biffin; Javier Calatrava; Kieran Dartee; Ali Douai; Amandine Gnonlonfin; Cécile Herivaux; Roxane Marchal; David Moncoulon; Guillaume Piton;International audience; Economic narratives are largely put forward as an argument for the promotion of Nature Based Solutions (NBS). However, integrated economic evidence, taking into account direct and opportunity costs, avoided damages and the multiplicity of co-benefits generated by NBS are still needed to support this argument and convince decision makers to invest in these solutions. To address this gap, we develop a methodological framework for the economic assessment of NBS for water related risks and present its application to three European case studies. We find that the cost of implementation and maintenance is lower for NBS strategies than for grey solutions for the same level of risk reduction, thereby confirming the cost-effectiveness advantage of these solutions. Benefits in terms of avoided damages are however generally not sufficient to cover these costs. Co-benefits represent the major share of the monetary value generated by NBS strategies. Finally, the results of the cost-benefit analysis reveal context-specific results on the overall economic efficiency of NBS. These results urge decision makers to tailor funding strategies to the specificity of NBS economic value.
