    International audience; This paper employs MLP (Multi Level Perspective) applied to a study on the transition to SFSC (short food supply chain) innovation taking place in North-West Portugal. MLP allows capturing transition phenomena and analysing them from a perspective that posits intervening factors and events on a three-level scale. Emphasis is laid on the institutional actors and factors that influence these processes, namely the Three Interrelated Analytic Dimensions and Types of Anchoring. Methodologically, personal interviews were conducted with 34 farmers who either are carrying out SFSC initiatives, or have dropped out, or even have never considered participating in them. A process of anchoring the innovation to the local socio-technical regime has been identified, characterised by a low buy-in from institutions and stakeholders. The anchoring that has been found has the peculiarity of occurring only in some points of the intersection between niche and regime, in a process in which it survives bordering this threshold, thanks to the mobilisation of multiple innovations. This type of anchoring, not yet described in the literature, draws attention to a possible pathway that innovations can follow, and brings implications for projects and for policy proposals to support the agroecological transition.

    International audience; This paper deals with the problem of the average density estimation in large-scale traffic networks, without requiring to know the density of each individual road. This is achieved by the design of a reduced-order open-loop observer. In general, this type of observers requires some specific graph properties, but we show that it is possible to find a virtual representation of the network that satisfies these conditions, by diving each road into a number of cells of specific length. The virtual network is shown to provide close approximations to the average density of the real system for large enough networks. Algorithms to efficiently calculate the observer parameters are proposed. This approach is based on the assumption that traffic dynamics are linear, and is applied at first in free-flow regime. Using microscopic simulations and real data we evaluate the observer performance even when congestion is present in the network.

    Succession of cold glacials and warm interglacials during the Quaternary results from large global climate responses to variable orbital configurations, accompanied by fluctuating greenhouse gas concentrations. Despite the influences of sea ice and atmospheric and ocean circulations in the Southern Ocean on atmospheric CO2 concentrations and climate, past changes in this region remain poorly documented. Here, we present the 800 ka deuterium excess record from the East Antarctica EPICA Dome C ice core, tracking sea surface temperature in evaporative regions of the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean from which moisture precipitated in East Antarctica is derived. We find that low obliquity leads to surface warming in evaporative moisture source regions during each glacial inception, although this relative temperature increase is counterbalanced by global cooling during glacial maxima. Links between the two regions during interglacials depends on the existence of a temperature maximum at the interglacial onset. In its absence, temperature maxima in the evaporative moisture source regions and in East Antarctica were synchronous. For the other interglacials, temperature maxima in the source areas lag early local temperature maxima by several thousand years, probably because of a change in the position of the evaporative source areas. Interglacial temperature coupling between East Antarctica and the Southern Ocean was set by the position of moisture source regions, according to an 800,000-year-long deuterium-excess ice-core record from East Antarctica.

    International audience; Product labeling is a way to inform consumers and increase their awareness about sustainability attributes of products. It guarantees the use of specific production conditions, promotes market incentives and highlights environmental, social and/or ethical product attributes. This study provides a literature review of sustainability labels on olive oil including consumer attitudes and behavior towards this product. Results show that consumers have positive attitudes towards olive oil carrying sustainability labels and are willing to pay more for olive oil carrying those labels. However, the major drivers of this behavior are far from being related to sustainability. This insight jeopardizes the main objective of those labels and suggests more clarifications about the information delivered by them. More in-depth investigations are needed about the drivers of consumer behavior towards olive oil carrying sustainability labels.

    International audience; Assessing the N content of arc magmas and their mantle source remains a challenge because the volatile element composition of melts and gases can be modified during magma ascent, storage, and eruption. Given that melt inclusions (MIs) in Mg-rich olivine represent the best proxies for primary arc melts, we applied, for the first time, an in situ high-resolution secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) method to determine the N concentration in olivine-hosted MIs from Klyuchevskoy volcano in Kamchatka. To reverse the effects of post-entrapment modification processes (i.e., exsolution of volatiles into a fluid bubble), the MIs were partially to completely homogenized at high temperatures (1150-1400°C) and pressures ranging from 0.1 to 500 MPa under dry to H 2 O-saturated conditions at variable oxygen fugacities (CCO to QFM+3.3). After the experiments, N concentrations in water-rich MI glasses correlate positively with H 2 O and CO 2 contents as well as with N/CO 2 ratios, and negatively with the volume of the remaining fluid bubble. Glasses of completely homogenized (fluid bubble-free) MIs contain up to 25.7 ± 0.5 ppm N, whereas glasses of three unheated (natural, bubblebearing) MIs have significantly lower N concentrations of ~1 ± 0.3 ppm. The N-CO 2-Nb characteristics of completely homogenized MIs indicate that melts feeding Klyuchevskoy volcano have high absolute concentrations of both N and CO 2 , as well as large excess of these volatiles relative to Nb, compared to primary mid-ocean ridge melts. This implies that large amounts of N and CO 2 in Klyuchevskoy melts and their mantle source are derived from the subducting slab, and that these subducted volatiles are (partially) returned to the crust and atmosphere by arc-related magmatism.

    AbstractThe ongoing development of the Global Carbon Project (GCP) global methane (CH4) budget shows a continuation of increasing CH4 emissions and CH4 accumulation in the atmosphere during 2000–2017. Here, we decompose the global budget into 19 regions (18 land and 1 oceanic) and five key source sectors to spatially attribute the observed global trends. A comparison of top‐down (TD) (atmospheric and transport model‐based) and bottom‐up (BU) (inventory‐ and process model‐based) CH4 emission estimates demonstrates robust temporal trends with CH4 emissions increasing in 16 of the 19 regions. Five regions—China, Southeast Asia, USA, South Asia, and Brazil—account for >40% of the global total emissions (their anthropogenic and natural sources together totaling >270 Tg CH4 yr−1 in 2008–2017). Two of these regions, China and South Asia, emit predominantly anthropogenic emissions (>75%) and together emit more than 25% of global anthropogenic emissions. China and the Middle East show the largest increases in total emission rates over the 2000 to 2017 period with regional emissions increasing by >20%. In contrast, Europe and Korea and Japan show a steady decline in CH4 emission rates, with total emissions decreasing by ~10% between 2000 and 2017. Coal mining, waste (predominantly solid waste disposal) and livestock (especially enteric fermentation) are dominant drivers of observed emissions increases while declines appear driven by a combination of waste and fossil emission reductions. As such, together these sectors present the greatest risks of further increasing the atmospheric CH4 burden and the greatest opportunities for greenhouse gas abatement.

    International audience; "The objective of this study was to explore individual and contextual-level characteristics associated with active (walking and cycling) and public transport as main travel modes for both non-commuting and commuting purposes, in residents of five European urban regions. We also described participant-reported motivations for modal choice for each journey purpose. The study used multilevel models to investigate cross-sectional associations of individual (i.e. age, gender, educational level) and contextual (defined by a combination of residential neighbourhood characteristics in typologies) characteristics with the choice of active and public transport as outcome. Based on an online survey of 6037 residents of Ghent and suburbs (Belgium), Paris and inner suburbs (France), Budapest and suburbs (Hungary), the Randstad (including the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht in the Netherlands) and Greater London (United Kingdom), we observed associations with both individual and contextual characteristics.Results of the multilevel modelling show that the probability of using active or public transport as main mode varies depending on both individual and contextual characteristics. At individual level, relations with gender, age, education, weight status and having at least one child varied according to main transport mode and/or purpose. For example, overweight participants reported lower level of cycling for commuting and non-commuting travels than normal-weight participants. In the context of non-commuting travels, participants with one or more child reported less public transport use and more walking (vs participants without children). Among contextual-level variables, urban characteristics of the residential neighbourhood defined by four clusters (according to food environment, recreational facilities and active mobility opportunities) were associated with public transport and walking but not with cycling. For active transport the most important reasons were “I like to travel (on foot or by bike)” and “I want to be physically active” for both travel purposes. “Public transport facilities nearby” was indicated as the most important reason for public transport (for both trip purposes) – the second was “Journey time”.Our findings highlight the importance of exploring a combination of multiple correlates at individual and contextual level according to journey purposes and suggest that the role of health-related individual characteristics such as weight status need further exploration." International audience It is well-known by now that the Hashin-Shtrikman bounds imply that the two-point correlation functions are not in general sufficient to estimate accurately the response of composites, especially when their underlying phases exhibit infinite contrast, e.g., porous materials. Starting from this longstanding, albeit qualitative result, this work investigates quantitatively the relevance of using two-point correlations to model the effective elastic properties of specific isotropic porous materials with and without connectivity. To achieve this in an unambiguous manner, we propose three different microstructures that share almost identical two-point statistics by design but are rather different morphologically. The choice of these microstructures is driven by their wide use in several practical problems ranging from polymers to geomaterials. The first microstructure is obtained by a random sequential adsorption (RSA) of non-overlapping, polydisperse, spherical and ellipsoidal voids oriented randomly in a unit-cell. The second one, termed connected random sequential adsorption (CRSA), is obtained from the first one by adding controlled connectivity via cylindrical channels of circular cross-section. The porosity resulting from connectivity is compensated by reducing the size of the existing voids to have the same overall porosity. Interestingly, we find that connectivity does not affect the corresponding two-point statistics. Finally, using as an input the numerical one-and two-point correlations of the RSA, we reconstruct a thresholded Gaussian random field (TGRF) microstructure. Using FFT numerical simulations, we show that the resulting effective elastic properties are very different for the three generated microstructures, despite them sharing nearly the same two-point correlation functions. We show, further, that the introduction of connectivity, and in particular the partial volume fraction of the connected channels, even small, affects strongly the resulting effective elasticity of the composite.

    Context. In line with Sustainable Development Goals 3 “Good health and well-being” and 12 “Responsible Consumption and Production”, this paper is concerned with the fragile population of the less-than-3-years-old children. More specifically, it investigates how infant food safety is perceived at the household level and at the level of childhood and health professionals directly in contact with them. Objective. The paper aims to analyze consumer priorities and perceptions of hazards in infant foods qualitatively and quantitatively. Methodology. To do so, a survey was carried out in France on 1750 people representative of the general population. A hybrid method is proposed to analyze the results of the survey, mixing artificial intelligence and statistics. Main insights. Within the declared priorities when choosing infant food, health comes first, with a top ranking for the absence of harmful substances, followed closely by nutritional balance—far ahead of environment, ease of use and price. The results show that the rankings of the hazards that cause the most worry are globally homogeneous throughout the populations (families, professionals, etc.) and higher for chemical contaminants from agricultural practices and packaging. For health professionals, concerns are higher than in the general population for all categories of contaminants, and specific concerns such as risk related to environmental and unknown contaminants are much more prevalent. The perception of risk varies with the food considered. For infant formula in particular, users seem puzzled by somehow contradictory messages. Perspectives. The study is intended to be generalized to Europe.

    International audience; The fifth generation of mobile broadband is more than just an evolution to provide more mobile bandwidth, massive machine-type communications, and ultra-reliable and low-latency communications. It relies on a complex, dynamic and heterogeneous environment that implies addressing numerous testing and security challenges. In this paper we present 5Greplay, an open-source 5G network traffic fuzzer that enables the evaluation of 5G components by replaying and modifying 5G network traffic by creating and injecting network scenarios into a target that can be a 5G core service (e.g., AMF, SMF) or a RAN network (e.g., gNodeB). The tool provides the ability to alter network packets online or offline in both control and data planes in a very flexible manner. The experimental evaluation conducted against open-source based 5G platforms, showed that the target services accept traffic being altered by the tool, and that it can reach up to 9.56 Gbps using only 1 processor core to replay 5G traffic.

    Authors: Rodriguez-Vega, Martin; Canudas-de-Wit, Carlos; Fourati, Hassen;
