National University of Ireland Galway digitized the archive of the Abbey Theatre between 2012 and 2015. This was the largest theatre archive digitization project worldwide and it has had a major impact on the University and its Library. The scale of the digitization project presented a series of challenges, including fragile material, limited time, streamlined workflows, complex digital rights management and effective systems. The project was completed on time and on budget in 2015, using a ‘more product, less process’ approach. Access to the Abbey Theatre Digital Archive has delivered strong academic impact for the University, generating new research income and international connections as well as contributing to improved institutional ranking. The Digital Archive enables new types of research, including text and data mining, and has reshaped undergraduate curricula. It has also had a transformative effect on the Library as leader of the project. The role of the archivist has changed and partnerships with the academic community have strengthened. A growing emphasis on digital publication has been a catalyst for a function- rather than subject-based organizational structure which promotes participation in digital scholarship initiatives, with archives and special collections occupying a new position of prominence. peer-reviewed

This study tests the assertion that the online dissemination of theses has a positive impact on the research profile of the institution and sets out to gain a greater understanding of how digital theses fit into the scholarly resources landscape. The year-long study combined primary and secondary research and was undertaken with the London School of Economics, based on its programme of theses digitization. The paper outlines the types of metrics an institution may use to measure the impact of its corpus of digitized dissertations and examines how these metrics may be generated. Findings included: a higher volume of theses attracts more traffic; Google’s strong indexing capabilities make it the most frequentlyused tool for discovery of digital theses; primary conclusions are that there is little correlation between downloads and citations of digitized theses; having a digital thesis collection enhances the reputation of the institution; although they recognize that digital theses are a valuable research tool, postgraduates and academics widely believe that making them available affects future publication opportunities; building and maintaining a digital thesis collection makes considerable ‘hidden’ work for librarians in terms of training about copyright and permissions. Some conclusions: better statistics are needed, especially of citations; institutions need to promote digital thesis collections better; more work needs to be done on whether digitizing theses impairs authors’ chances of traditional publication and on how digital theses affect and are affected by the open access movement.

While archives across the UK are recognizing the potential of digitization to unlock their treasures, the realities of a large-scale digitization project can be daunting for any institution. This article will explore how partnerships between publishers and archives can help the latter face the challenges of getting content digitized. It will take a look behind the scenes of the longstanding partnership between Adam Matthew (AM; a specialist publisher of digital primary source collections), and The National Archives at Kew (TNA; the UK government's official archive). It will explore how this kind of relationship develops; how the production process works, and how products are brought through to market.

With some five million collections items comprising art, film, photographs, sound, new media, writings and objects, the possibilities which digitization opens up for the Imperial War Museums (IWM) are only limited by the imagination: new ways of reaching and engaging with audiences, slicker commercial activities, online access to superbly restored film and photographic images. But without the financial clout of a Google-style business, and where systems and standards are still very much in development, heritage institutions struggle to bridge the gulf between aspiration and reality. Hiding behind the term digitization lies a mass of activities and responsibilities, all critical to its success. With several years of experience of digitizing anything from posters to motion picture film, and of capturing high-quality digital images of a range of objects from medals to missiles, IWM has now learnt, often the hard way, most of the lessons.

Authors: Simon Bell;Simon Bell;Over the past three years the British Library has brokered mass digitization partnerships with Google, Brightsolid, Find my Past, Cengage Learning and others. This article explores some of the major challenges underlying digitization partnerships, particularly public-private, covering many of the important aspects to be considered such as ownership, access, control and standards. It also covers topics like term (length of time), the importance of flexibility, maximizing use/re-use of digitized material and market penetration. Legal and other aspects of such partnerships are also detailed, with sections on the type of partnership that needs to be entered into (non-exclusive) and the role of the commercial partner. Finally, there is sound advice about risk assessment and cover. These lessons learned from experience are itemized in a handy ten-point checklist for anyone considering entering into a digitization partnership, and recommendations are made based on a wealth of acquired knowledge.
