    Authors: Clivaz, Claire;

    Humanities is in all its tasks and activities a storytelling. In her 1958 essay The Modern Concept of History, Hannah Arendt was recognizing the first face-to-face meeting between history and poetics in a scene told by Homer: Ulysses, the witness, cries by listening the blind bard Demodocos narrating his own deeds during the war of Troy (Arendt, 1958). But Ulysses stops Demodocos’ storytelling as a “too perfect” song, liên kata kosmon (Hartog, 2003; Odysseus8.487-491). If Humanities has been since centuries written as storytelling, from literature to philosophy passing through history, this paper argues that research infrastructures are nowadays the necessary and unperfect witnesses that keep the Humanities storytelling anchoraged in the physical and real world. Research infrastructures (RIs) are anonymous Ulysses standing up and claiming attention, efforts and sweat, whereas scholars would like to just sing a brilliant storytelling. RIs are Humanities storytellers, as illustrated by the three following examples. The first one is the Sisyphus temptation for Humanist scholars to publish corpora on virtual research environments (VREs). As well argued (Pierazzo, 2015), the notion of printed edition is evolving towards digital collections, that remain open-ended but stop when time and/or resources are missing (Mombert, 2014). Leadings to the creation of collections, the VREs are deeply reshaping the established textual categories (Clivaz, 2016). Morevoer, VREs are producing Humanities stories often before the proper scholarly narration ((Strackpole, 2020), whereas in printed books, authors can and have to choose the starting point, the conclusion, and the intermediate steps. RIs are open-ended and efficient storytellers. Secondly, the knowledge hierarchies of the modern episteme are also largely reshaped by the VREs. Until the fifties at least, the study of Latin and Greek was mandatory even in the studies of medicine, a phenomenon entitled in French faire ses humanities (Berra, 2012). The spreading of research infrastructures has apparently sealed the reign of English, but this phenomenon also brings benefits. The beloved Latin and Greek heritage are now accessible to a non-elitist public, thanks to the web serendipity, or in crowd-sourcing projects. Moreover, other ancient languages, often let aside in Humanities, are raising up: forgotten words, rare languages can be read online. RIs are Open Science storytellers, as promoted by the EOSC-A spirit. Finally, big research infrastructures are reshaping Humanities storytelling by creating narrative human networks: the lonely work of the 19th century scholar at the desk is definitively over. DARIAH is in this regard a clear example of the emergence of Humanities communities: designed in summer 2013 around four Virtual Competence Centers (VCCs), – according to a repartition between “hardware” infrastructure (VCC1), teaching (VCC2), research (VCC3) and community (VCC4) –, DARIAH is evolving since the last years in plural living networks – the working groups (WGs). They all include elements from the 4 VCCs. Through its WGs, DARIAH demonstrates that RIs can reshape Humanities scholarship in storytelling communities. References of the abstract H. This article presents a study of the French-speaking digital humanities. It is based on the experience of two research engineers from the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) who have been studying these issues for the last ten years. They conducted a survey at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS-Paris) which enabled them to draw up an overview of the transformation of the profession of humanities and social sciences research engineers in the context of the digital humanities. The Digit_Hum initiative, which they run in parallel with their respective activities at the ENS, also provided information for this overview thanks to its role as a space for discussion about the digital humanities along with training and structuring of this field at the ENS and the Université Paris Sciences & Lettres (PSL). Cet article est une réflexion sur les humanités numériques en contexte francophone. Elle s’appuie sur l'expérience de deux ingénieures du Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique travaillant sur ces questions depuis une dizaine d'années. À travers l'enquête qu'elles ont menée à l'École normale supérieure (ENS-Paris), elles dressent un panorama de la transformation du métier d'ingénieur(e) en sciences humaines et sociales dans le contexte des humanités numériques. L'initiative Digit_Hum, qu'elles animent en parallèle de leurs activités respectives à l'École, nourrit également ce témoignage en constituant un espace de discussions, de formations et de structuration des humanités numériques au sein de l'ENS et de l’Université Paris Sciences & Lettres.

    This paper takes as an example the envisioned portal of the newly started Polifonia project that interlinks resources from very rich, old, established archives while making optimal use of the latest semantic web technologies. In the project, ten research pilots, spanning from historical bells and organ heritage, classification of polyphonic notated music, to the historical role of music in children's lives, form the driving force behind the development of the dedicated interface.Based on a mixture of participation and participatory observation, we describe and reflect on the processes involved in making the portal. In other words - exemplified with the case of Polifonia - we reflect on the role of interfaces (of various types, shapes, manifestations and/or durations) to organise knowledge in an interdisciplinary project. In particular, we focus on the role of data management within the project as a key component of research methodology and cross-disciplinary collaboration, rather than an administrative exercise. The knowledge generated by this part of the project serves at least three different purposes: (1) to envision new research questions (competence questions) guiding the engineering backbone processes; (2) to define the future elements of the portal both for experts, other researchers, wider public and specific parts of the wider public; and last but not least, (3) the documentation task needed to support reproducibility and FAIRness of all data processes. Figure 1 below illustrates how the three components, namely the sociotechnical roadmap of the portal, the ontology-based knowledge graphs created in the research pilots, and the data management plan form three complementary components of the Polifonia project, that ultimately all feed into the web portal.In this paper, we claim that behind any interface there is the need for a layer of interfaces that form the basis of the final interface visible to the public. These procedural, intermediary, interfaces take the form of meetings, shared notes, github presence - and will result in products of their own (Data Management Plan, knowledge graphs), as well as inform the decisions during the process of designing the portal.

    Abstract How can researchers identify suitable research data repositories for the deposit of their research data? Which repository matches best the technical and legal requirements of a specific research project? For this end and with a humanities perspective the Data Deposit Recommendation Service (DDRS) has been developed as a prototype. It not only serves as a functional service for selecting humanities research data repositories but it is particularly a technical demonstrator illustrating the potential of re-using an already existing infrastructure - in this case re3data - and the feasibility to set up this kind of service for other research disciplines. The documentation and the code of this project can be found in the DARIAH GitHub repository: https://dariah-eric.github.io/ddrs/. This report discusses the scholarly communication issues in Social Sciences and Humanities that are relevant to the future development and functioning of OPERAS. The outcomes collected here can be divided into two groups of innovations regarding 1) the operation of OPERAS, and 2) its activities. The “operational” issues include the ways in which an innovative research infrastructure should be governed (Chapter 1) as well as the business models for open access publications in Social Sciences and Humanities (Chapter 2). The other group of issues is dedicated to strategic areas where OPERAS and its services may play an instrumental role in providing, enabling, or unlocking innovation: FAIR data (Chapter 3), bibliodiversity and multilingualism in scholarly communication (Chapter 4), the future of scholarly writing (Chapter 5), and quality assessment (Chapter 6). Each chapter provides an overview of the main findings and challenges with emphasis on recommendations for OPERAS and other stakeholders like e- infrastructures, publishers, SSH researchers, research performing organisations, policy makers, and funders. Links to data and further publications stemming from work concerning particular tasks are located at the end of each chapter.

    This white paper primarily served as an internal working document for the DARIAH ERIC. We inspected current service policies and practices across ERIC’s with an emphasis on social sciences and humanities. We summarised earlier analysis of the DARIAH service portfolio. The ultimate purpose of the paper was to create a common ground of understanding what DARIAH services are and how to develop governance and management around them. Still, when writing this paper, we realised that others might encounter similar questions in their quest, and so could learn from our exploration.

    The Henri Poincaré correspondence is a corpus of letters sent and received by this mathematician. The edition of this correspondence is a long-term project begun during the 1990s. Since 1999, a website is devoted to publish online this correspondence with digitized letters. In 2017, it has been decided to reforge this website using Omeka S. This content management system offers useful services but some user needs have led to the development of an RDFS infrastructure associated to it. Approximate and explained searches are managed thanks to SPARQL query transformations. A prototype for efficient RDF annotation of this corpus (and similar corpora) has been designed and implemented. This article deals with these three research issues and how they are addressed. International audience

    Authors: Clivaz, Claire;

    Published in OA on RESSI (http://www.ressi.ch/) on the 15.02.22. We present here highlights from an enquiry on the innovations in scholarly writing in the Humanities and Social Sciences in the H2020 project OPERAS-P. This article explores the theme of Open Research Data and its role in the emergence of new models of scholarly writing. We examine more closely the obstacles and fostering conditions to the publication of research data, both from a social and a technical perspective. International audience
