    DARIAH Data Policy outlines the basic principles for managing and sharing research data within the DARIAH infrastructure and beyond. The policy targets both data producers and data providers, encourages the use of open formats and community standards, acknowledges the diversity of options for data publishing, and puts forward practical recommendations for publishing DARIAH-affiliated data in trustworthy repositories and making them discoverable through the OpenAIRE-Graph.

    Authors: GOICOECHEA DE JORGE, MARIA;

    Libraries worldwide are investing a significant portion of their resources in digitising their collections. Digitised formats are immensely valuable for researchers but may seem dry and unappealing to broader audiences, particularly when the original content was intended for children. This talk will present the preliminary research conducted on digitised formats of popular children's literature found in specialised libraries, focussing on the models provided by two institutions: the British Library's "Turning the Pages" software and the National Library of Spain's "Madgazine," used in the interactive editions of Don Quixote and Leonardo da Vinci’s Madrid Codex. The discussion will revolve around the specific workflow we tested for creating a digitally enhanced edition of a collection of stories entitled "Plage of Dragons," published in 1923 and based on the Spanish adaptations of Edith Nesbit’s tales. The slides and transcript available in this record were delivered in November 2023 as part of the DARIAH Friday Frontiers webinar series. The full synthesis, along with a video of the webinar, can be found at https://campus.dariah.eu/resource/posts/new-readers-for-old-texts-sharing-the-workflow-of-a-digitally-enriched-children-literature-edition

    This deliverable builds on and further extends the findings of D6.1 "Inventory of existing data sources and formats" surveying the landscape of literary corpora, as well as D8.1 "Tools for NLP" cataloguing the set of tools in the context of CLS. Focusing on the wealth of formats used when encoding and processing text, it offers a comprehensive overview of common formats for encoding textual data, beyond the "lingua franca", TEI, both in the domain of computational literary studies and computational linguistics, highlighting potential discrepancies in the approach between these two areas of research. The overview reveals a very heterogeneous landscape with a plethora of formats, devised for differing tasks, from philological encoding of historical text material, to computational annotation and processing of text. Considering interoperability an indispensable key to reusability, the deliverable explores the challenges and approaches converting between formats. This information compilation is considered input for further developing the Transformation Matrix, introduced in D6.1, which shall serve as a conceptual framework to consolidate existing solutions for format conversion in the Transformation Toolbox to be delivered by the end of the project (D6.2). The Transformation Matrix shall allow to capture information about specific data structures (features) present in datasets as well as data structures required or produced by tools. This requires a sufficiently expressive formalised description, which is proposed in the CLSCor data model.

    The distributed and polymorphic nature of DARIAH as a consortium, and its social and technical components as an infrastructure makes it pertinent to define its perimeter. This is especially true with respect to the various resources that are created and used in its environment. The term “DARIAH resource” does not indicate direct ownership or control by the DARIAH consortium over that resource but rather it being created and/or used within the broad DARIAH ecosystem, i.e. some actor (person or institution) related to DARIAH being involved in the creation or provision of that resource. A large majority of DARIAH resources are produced or offered byindividual institutions in the member countries and reported by their respective national consortia. Besides that, there are resources produced under DARIAH activities by DARIAH Working Groups, funded by DARIAH Theme or by DARIAH and affiliated entities within EU projects.

  • Authors: Koraljka Kuzman Šlogar; Anamarija Žugić Borić;

    Responsibility, ethics, inclusiveness, and the principles of Open Science are central to the advancement of scholarly research and publishing. By embracing these values, we can create a more transparent, collaborative, and accessible research ecosystem, as proposed by UNESCO (2022). However, there is a pressing need for effective tools that aid researchers in practising Open Science while addressing the specific requirements of disciplines such as the Humanities and Arts, especially in the context of the welldocumented prevalence of STEM disciplines over the Humanities in the development of Open Science and Open Access trends (Eve, 2014). The Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH-EU) consortium, formed by "researchers for researchers", is uniquely positioned to address this inequality while driving the development of an open ecosystem that naturally evolves from authentic community practices and needs (Tóth-Czifra, 2021). Croatia as a member country with its DARIAH-HR coordination office readily follows it in this endeavour by organising workshops, creating one-of-a-kind digital platforms and tools, etc.In this poster presentation we aim to introduce several digital tools designed or codesigned by DARIAH-HR for scholars in the fields of the Humanities and Arts (and broader): 1) a digital tool for the creation of thesauri, 2) a digital tool for creating registers, 3) a digital tool for generating GDPR-compliant forms for obtaining consent from data subjects and 4) a software for modelling, processing and representation of monumental heritage and culture of memory. While the first and second tools represent pioneering efforts to encompass the widest community of humanists and researchers in Croatia, the third and fourth tools provide in-depth solutions in their respective areas of focus, extending their reach to an international level and catering to a diverse audience that includes researchers as well as tourists.The digital thesaurus creation tool “tezaurus.hr” is designed to streamline the process of developing structured vocabularies relevant to the Humanities and Arts. The digital register development tool “DH Register” provides a user-friendly interface (currently in development) that enables researchers to create and curate registries, incorporating metadata standards while adhering to the requirements of the FAIR principles (as recommended in, e.g., Hahnel & Valen, 2020). The “Consent Form Wizard” (CFW) is a tool developed by the DARIAH-EU working group Ethics and Legality in Digital Arts and Humanities (ELDAH) to support humanities researchers within the European Union in obtaining valid consent for data processing in the context of their specific professional activity. “Monument Heritage Map” is a digital platform that allows the implementation of available data and methods for data collection, processing, multimodal visualisation and mapping of cultural monuments.When integrated into an Open Science framework, these tools provide researchers with efficient means to enhance knowledge organisation, resource sharing, and collaboration while upholding responsible research practices and promoting inclusivity within the academic community. Enabling researchers to create user-friendly thesauri and registers also facilitates the discoverability, interoperability, and accessibility of research outputs. Conclusively, it contributes to the development of a robust and interconnected research infrastructure.Through the presentation of these digital tools and their implications, this poster seeks to contribute to the discourse surrounding responsible and inclusive research in the context of the Humanities and Arts. It emphasises the significance of training, education, and capacity building for Open Science.

    What makes our idea effective, rewarding and useful? This was the question addressed during a workshop session Digital humanities, citizen science and the arts: synergies towards innovative formats at the COESO project conference entitled Connect. Collaborate.Create (18-21 October 2023 in Paris). The session was an opportunity to present the assumptions of the OPERAS Innovation Lab and the methods it wants to develop in the area of evaluating innovative projects.

    Authors: GOICOECHEA DE JORGE, MARIA;

  • Authors: Koraljka Kuzman Šlogar; Anamarija Žugić Borić;
